Sector Coupling Potential of Wind-based Hydrogen Production and Fuel Cell Train Operation in Regional Rail Transport in Berlin and Brandenburg

As the transport sector is ought to be decarbonized fuel-cell-powered trains are a viable zero-tailpipe technology alternative to the widely employed diesel multiple units in regional railway service on non-electrified tracks. Carbon-free hydrogen can be provided by water-electrolysis from renewable energies. In this study we introduce an approach to assess the potential of wind-based hydrogen for use in adjacent regional rail transport by applying a GIS approach in conjunction with a site-level cost model. In Brandenburg about 10.1 million train-km annually could be switched to fuel cell electric train operation. This relates to a diesel consumption of appr. 9.5 million liters today. If fuel cell trains would be employed that translated to 2198 annual tons hydrogen annually. At favorable sites hydrogen costs of approx. 6.40 €/kg - including costs of hydrogen refueling stations - could be achieved. Making excess hydrogen available for other consumers would further decrease hydrogen production costs.
Optimisation-based System Designs for Deep Offshore Wind Farms including Power to Gas Technologies

A large deployment of energy storage solutions will be required by the stochastic and non-controllable nature of most renewable energy sources when planning for higher penetration of renewable electricity into the energy mix. Various solutions have been suggested for dealing with medium- and long-term energy storage. Hydrogen and ammonia are two of the most frequently discussed as they are both carbon-free fuels. In this paper the authors analyse the energy and cost efficiency of hydrogen and ammonia-based pathways for the storage transportation and final use of excess electricity from an offshore wind farm. The problem is solved as a linear programming problem simultaneously optimising the size of each problem unit and the respective time-dependent operational conditions. As a case study we consider an offshore wind farm of 1.5 GW size located in a reference location North of Scotland. The energy efficiency and cost of the whole chain are evaluated and compared with competitive alternatives namely batteries and liquid hydrogen storage. The results show that hydrogen and ammonia storage can be part of the optimal solution. Moreover their use for long-term energy storage can provide a significant cost-effective contribution to an extensive penetration of renewable energy sources in national energy systems.
A Review of Recent Advances on the Effects of Microstructural Refinement and Nano-Catalytic Additives on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of Metal and Complex Hydrides

The recent advances on the effects of microstructural refinement and various nano-catalytic additives on the hydrogen storage properties of metal and complex hydrides obtained in the last few years in the allied laboratories at the University of Waterloo (Canada) and Military University of Technology (Warsaw Poland) are critically reviewed in this paper. The research results indicate that microstructural refinement (particle and grain size) induced by ball milling influences quite modestly the hydrogen storage properties of simple metal and complex metal hydrides. On the other hand the addition of nanometric elemental metals acting as potent catalysts and/or metal halide catalytic precursors brings about profound improvements in the hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics for simple metal and complex metal hydrides alike. In general catalytic precursors react with the hydride matrix forming a metal salt and free nanometric or amorphous elemental metals/intermetallics which in turn act catalytically. However these catalysts change only kinetic properties i.e. the hydrogen absorption/desorption rate but they do not change thermodynamics (e.g. enthalpy change of hydrogen sorption reactions). It is shown that a complex metal hydride LiAlH4 after high energy ball milling with a nanometric Ni metal catalyst and/or MnCl2 catalytic precursor is able to desorb relatively large quantities of hydrogen at RT 40 and 80 °C. This kind of behavior is very encouraging for the future development of solid state hydrogen systems.
Initial Assessment of a Fuel Cell—Gas Turbine Hybrid Propulsion Concept

A fuel cell—gas turbine hybrid propulsion concept is introduced and initially assessed. The concept uses the water mass flow produced by a hydrogen fuel cell in order to improve the efficiency and power output of the gas turbine engine through burner steam injection. Therefore the fuel cell product water is conditioned through a process of condensation pressurization and revaporization. The vaporization uses the waste heat of the gas turbine exhaust. The functional principles of the system concept are introduced and discussed and appropriate methodology for an initial concept evaluation is formulated. Essential technology fields are surveyed in brief. The impact of burner steam injection on gas turbine efficiency and sizing is parametrically modelled. Simplified parametric models of the fuel cell system and key components of the water treatment process are presented. Fuel cell stack efficiency and specific power levels are methodically derived from latest experimental studies at the laboratory scale. The overall concept is assessed for a liquid hydrogen fueled short-/medium range aircraft application. Block fuel savings of up to 7.1% are found for an optimum design case based on solid oxide fuel cell technology. The optimum design features a gas turbine water-to-air ratio of 6.1% in cruise and 62% reduced high-level NOx emissions.
Macroeconomic Implications of Switching to process-emission-free Iron and Steel Production in Europe

Climate change is one of the most serious threats to the human habitat. The required structural change to limit anthropogenic forcing is expected to fundamentally change daily social and economic life. The production of iron and steel is a special case of economic activities since it is not only associated with combustion but particularly with process emissions of greenhouse gases which have to be dealt with likewise. Traditional mitigation options of the sector like efficiency measures substitution with less emission-intensive materials or scrap-based production are bounded and thus insufficient for rapid decarbonization necessary for complying with long-term climate policy targets. Iron and steel products are basic materials at the core of modern socio-economic systems additionally being essential also for other mitigation options like hydro and wind power. Therefore a system-wide assessment of recent technological developments enabling almost complete decarbonization of the sector is substantially relevant. Deploying a recursive-dynamic multi-region multi-sector computable general equilibrium approach we investigate switches from coke-to hydrogen-based iron and steel technologies in a scenario framework where industry decisions (technological choice and timing) and climate policies are mis-aligned. Overall we find that the costs of industry transition are moderate but still ones that may represent a barrier for implementation because the generation deciding on low-carbon technologies and bearing (macro)economic costs might not be the generation benefitting from it. Our macroeconomic assessment further indicates that anticipated bottom-up estimates of required additional domestic renewable electricity tend to be overestimated. Relative price changes in the economy induce electricity substitution effects and trigger increased electricity imports. Sectoral carbon leakage is an imminent risk and calls for aligned course of action of private and public actors.
Charge Carrier Mapping for Z-scheme Photocatalytic Water-splitting Sheet via Categorization of Microscopic Time-resolved Image Sequences

Photocatalytic water splitting system using particulate semiconductor materials is a promising strategy for converting solar energy into hydrogen and oxygen. In particular visible-light-driven ‘Z-scheme’ printable photocatalyst sheets are cost-effective and scalable. However little is known about the fundamental photophysical processes which are key to explaining and promoting the photoactivity. Here we applied the pattern-illumination time-resolved phase microscopy for a photocatalyst sheet composed of Mo-doped BiVO4 and Rh-doped SrTiO3 with indium tin oxide as the electron mediator to investigate photo-generated charge carrier dynamics. Using this method we successfully observed the position- and structure-dependent charge carrier behavior and visualized the active/inactive sites in the sheets under the light irradiation via the time sequence images and the clustering analysis. This combination methodology could provide the material/synthesis optimization methods for the maximum performance of the photocatalyst sheets.
A Preliminary Assessment of the Potential of Low Percentage Green Hydrogen Blending in the Italian Natural Gas Network

The growing rate of electricity generation from renewables is leading to new operational and management issues on the power grid because the electricity generated exceeds local requirements and the transportation or storage capacities are inadequate. An interesting option that is under investigation by several years is the opportunity to use the renewable electricity surplus to power electrolyzers that split water into its component parts with the hydrogen being directly injected into natural gas pipelines for both storage and transportation. This innovative approach merges together the concepts of (i) renewable power-to-hydrogen (P2H) and of (ii) hydrogen blending into natural gas networks. The combination of renewable P2H and hydrogen blending into natural gas networks has a huge potential in terms of environmental and social benefits but it is still facing several barriers that are technological economic legislative. In the framework of the new hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe Member States should design a roadmap moving towards a hydrogen ecosystem by 2050. The blending of “green hydrogen” that is hydrogen produced by renewable sources in the natural gas network at a limited percentage is a key element to enable hydrogen production in a preliminary and transitional phase. Therefore it is urgent to evaluate at the same time (i) the potential of green hydrogen blending at low percentage (up to 10%) and (ii) the maximum P2H capacity compatible with low percentage blending. The paper aims to preliminary assess the green hydrogen blending potential into the Italian natural gas network as a tool for policy makers grid and networks managers and energy planners.
Blended Hydrogen: The UK Public’s Perspective

Hydrogen is increasingly being positioned as an important component of the UK’s Net Zero ambitions and commitments. In particular hydrogen could be an appropriate way to decarbonise the heat produced for domestic and industrial buildings. It is possible that hydrogen could replace natural gas in the UK gas network achieving key carbon emissions reduction targets while enabling homes to be heated to a similar level and standard as they currently are.<br/>In the interim small amounts of hydrogen will soon be blended into current natural gas supplies. The premise of this idea is to blend hydrogen into the existing gas network in small enough quantities to not require any adjustments to domestic cookers boilers and other gas-fired appliances but in large enough quantities to generate significant immediate reductions in carbon emissions. Three trials will take place between 2019 and 2022 as part of the HyDeploy project with the aim of demonstrating that hydrogen blending can occur at scale with no safety implications and no disruption to users.<br/>Public perceptions and acceptance of hydrogen will be pivotal in this scenario. At present there is very little indication of how acceptable hydrogen will be for heating homes and questions around safety cost and performance are only beginning to be understood and addressed.<br/>This report investigates public perceptions of blended hydrogen as a fuel for UK homes. In March 2019 we administered a survey to a sample (n=742) representative of the UK adult population in terms of age sex ethnicity and personal income. Our survey covered initial perceptions values and knowledge of hydrogen; the possibilities and pitfalls of hydrogen blending; public trust; and participants’ overall support for hydrogen. A New Model For Hydrogen-Induced Crack (HIC) Growth in Metal Alloy Pipelines Under Extreme Pressure

Pipeline failure caused by Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC) also known as Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) is a pressing issue for the oil and natural gas industry. Bursts in pipelines are devastating and extremely costly. The explosive force of a bursting pipe can inflict fatal injuries to workers while the combined loss of product and effort to repair are highly costly to producers. Further pipeline failures due to HIC have a long lasting impact on the surrounding environment. Safe use and operation of such pipelines depend on a good understanding of the underlying forces that cause HIC. Specifically a reliable way to predict the growth rate of hydrogen-induced cracks is needed to establish a safe duration of service for each length of pipeline. Pipes that have exceeded or are near the end of their service life can then be retired before the risk of HIC-related failures becomes too high. However little is known about the mechanisms that drive HIC. To date no model has been put forth that accurately predicts the growth rate of fractures due to HIC under extreme pressures such as in the context of natural gas and petroleum pipelines. Herein a mathematical model for the growth of fractures by HIC under extreme pressures is presented. This model is derived from first principles and the results are compared with other models. The implications of these findings are discussed and a description of future work based on these findings is presented.
Atomistic Modelling of Light-element Co-segregation at Structural Defects in Iron

Studying the behaviour of hydrogen in the vicinity of extended defects such as grain boundaries dislocations nanovoids and phase boundaries is critical in understanding the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement. A key complication in this context is the interplay between hydrogen and other segregating elements. Modelling the competition of H with other light elements requires an efficient description of the interactions of compositionally complex systems with the system sizes needed to appropriately describe extended defects often precluding the use of direct ab initio approaches. In this regard we have developed novel electronic structure approaches to understand the energetics and mutual interactions of light elements at representative structural features in high-strength ferritic steels. Using this approach we examine the co-segregation of hydrogen with carbon at chosen grain boundaries in α-iron. We find that the strain introduced by segregated carbon atoms at tilt grain boundaries increases the solubility of hydrogen close to the boundary plane giving a higher H concentration in the vicinity of the boundary than in a carbon-free case. Via simulated tensile tests we find that the simultaneous presence of carbon and hydrogen at grain boundaries leads to a significant decrease in the elongation to fracture compared with the carbon-free case.
Pressure Peaking Phenomena: Unignited Hydrogen Releases in Confined Spaces – Large-scale Experiments

The aim of this study was to validate a model for predicting overpressure arising from accidental hydrogen releases in areas with limited ventilation. Experiments were performed in a large-scale setup that included a steel-reinforced container of volume 14.9 m3 and variable ventilation areas and mass flow rates. The pressure peaking phenomenon characterized as transient overpressure with a characteristic peak in a vented enclosure was observed during all the experiments. The model description presented the relationship between the ventilation area mass flow rate enclosure volume and discharge coefficient. The experimental results were compared with two prediction models representing a perfect mix and the real mix. The perfect mix assumed that all the released hydrogen was well stirred inside the enclosure during the releases. The real mix prediction s used the hydrogen concentration and temperature data measured during experiments. The prediction results with both perfect mix and real mix showed possible hazards during unignited hydrogen releases.
Hydrogen Refueling Station Networks for Heavy-duty Vehicles in Future Power Systems

A potential solution to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector is to use alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFV). Heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) emit a large share of GHG emissions in the transport sector and are therefore the subject of growing attention from global regulators. Fuel cell and green hydrogen technologies are a promising option to decarbonize HDVs as their fast refuelling and long vehicle ranges are consistent with current logistic operational requirements. Moreover the application of green hydrogen in transport could enable more effective integration of renewable energies (RE) across different energy sectors. This paper explores the interplay between HDV Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) that produce hydrogen locally and the power system by combining an infrastructure location planning model and an electricity system optimization model that takes grid expansion options into account. Two scenarios – one sizing refuelling stations to support the power system and one sizing them independently of it – are assessed regarding their impacts on the total annual electricity system costs regional RE integration and the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). The impacts are calculated based on locational marginal pricing for 2050. Depending on the integration scenario we find average LCOH of between 4.83 euro/kg and 5.36 euro/kg for which nodal electricity prices are the main determining factor as well as a strong difference in LCOH between north and south Germany. Adding HDV-HRS incurs power transmission expansion as well as higher power supply costs as the total power demand increases. From a system perspective investing in HDV-HRS in symbiosis with the power system rather than independently promises cost savings of around seven billion euros per annum. We therefore conclude that the co-optimization of multiple energy sectors is important for investment planning and has the potential to exploit synergies.
Recent Progress Using Solid-State Materials for Hydrogen Storage: A Short Review

With the rapid growth in demand for effective and renewable energy the hydrogen era has begun. To meet commercial requirements efficient hydrogen storage techniques are required. So far four techniques have been suggested for hydrogen storage: compressed storage hydrogen liquefaction chemical absorption and physical adsorption. Currently high-pressure compressed tanks are used in the industry; however certain limitations such as high costs safety concerns undesirable amounts of occupied space and low storage capacities are still challenges. Physical hydrogen adsorption is one of the most promising techniques; it uses porous adsorbents which have material benefits such as low costs high storage densities and fast charging–discharging kinetics. During adsorption on material surfaces hydrogen molecules weakly adsorb at the surface of adsorbents via long-range dispersion forces. The largest challenge in the hydrogen era is the development of progressive materials for efficient hydrogen storage. In designing efficient adsorbents understanding interfacial interactions between hydrogen molecules and porous material surfaces is important. In this review we briefly summarize a hydrogen storage technique based on US DOE classifications and examine hydrogen storage targets for feasible commercialization. We also address recent trends in the development of hydrogen storage materials. Lastly we propose spillover mechanisms for efficient hydrogen storage using solid-state adsorbents.
On the Concept of Micro-fracture Map (MFM) and its Role in Structural Integrity Evaluations in Materials Science and Engineering: A Tribute to Jorge Manrique

This paper deals with the concept of micro-fracture map (MFM) and its role in structural integrity evaluations in materials science and engineering on the basis of previous research by the author on notch-induced fracture and hydrogen embrittlement of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels and 316L austenitic stainless steel. With regard to this some examples are provided of assembly of MFMs in particular situations.
An Overview of the Recent Advances of Additive‐Improved Mg(BH4)2 for Solid‐State Hydrogen Storage Material

Recently hydrogen (H2) has emerged as a superior energy carrier that has the potential to replace fossil fuel. However storing H2 under safe and operable conditions is still a challenging process due to the current commercial method i.e. H2 storage in a pressurised and liquified state which requires extremely high pressure and extremely low temperature. To solve this problem re‐ search on solid‐state H2 storage materials is being actively conducted. Among the solid‐state H2 storage materials borohydride is a potential candidate for H2 storage owing to its high gravimetric capacity (majority borohydride materials release >10 wt% of H2). Mg(BH4)2 which is included in the borohydride family shows promise as a good H2 storage material owing to its high gravimetric capacity (14.9 wt%). However its practical application is hindered by high thermal decomposition temperature (above 300 °C) slow sorption kinetics and poor reversibility. Currently the general research on the use of additives to enhance the H2 storage performance of Mg(BH4)2 is still under investigation. This article reviews the latest research on additive‐enhanced Mg(BH4)2 and its impact on the H2 storage performance. The future prospect and challenges in the development of additive‐ enhanced Mg(BH4)2 are also discussed in this review paper. To the best of our knowledge this is the first systematic review paper that focuses on the additive‐enhanced Mg(BH4)2 for solid‐state H2 storage.
Notch-induced Anisotropic Fracture of Cold Drawn Pearlitic Steels and the Associated Crack Path Deflection and Mixed-mode Stress State: A Tribute to Masaccio

This paper deals with notch-induced anisotropic fracture behavior of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels on the basis of their microstructural evolution during manufacturing by multi-step cold drawing that produces slenderizing and orientation of the pearlitic colonies together with densification and orientation of the Fe/Fe3C lamellae reviewing previous research by the author. Results of fracture test using notched specimens of cold drawn pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing (distinct levels of strain hardening) in air and hydrogen environment shows: (i) the key impact of the colonies and lamellae alignment and orientation on notch-induced fracture producing anisotropic fracture behavior with its related crack path deflection (or fracture path deviation); (ii) the necessity of both stress triaxiality (constraint) and microstructural orientation (colonies/lamellae) alignment to produce fracture path deflection; (iii) hydrogen presence (the circumstance) promotes crack path deviation in addition to the inherent microstructural anisotropy created by cold drawing; (iv) the anisotropic fracture path with a stepped profile in cold drawn pearlitic steel consisting of deflections and deviations from the initial transverse fracture path in mode I resembles Masaccio’s Tribute Money painting with its mountains at the background so that the present paper can be considered as a Tribute to Masaccio.
Application of the Incremental Step Loading Technique to Small Punch Tests on S420 Steel in Acid Environments

The Small Punch test has been recently used to estimate mechanical properties of steels in aggressive environments. This technique very interesting when there is shortage of material consists in using a small plane specimen and punch it until it fails. The type of tests normally used are under a constant load in an aggressive environment with the target to determine the threshold stress. However this is an inaccurate technique which takes time as the tests are quite slow. In this paper the Small Punch tests are combined with the step loading technique collected in the standard ASTM F1624 [1] to obtain the value of threshold stress of an S420 steel in a total time of approximately one week. The ASTM F1624 indicates how to apply constant load steps in hydrogen embrittlement environments increasing them subsequently and adapting their duration until the specimen fails. The environment is created by means of cathodic polarization of cylindrical tensile specimens in an acid electrolyte. A batch of standard tests are performed to validate the methodology.
HyDeploy Report: Exemption

Exemption is requested from the obligation set out in Regulation 8(1) of the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 (GSMR) to convey only natural gas that is compliant with the Interchangeability requirements of Part I of Schedule 3 of the GSMR within the G3 element of the Keele University gas distribution network (KU-GDN). The KU-GDN is owned and operated by Keele University. The proposed conveyance of non-compliant gas (hereafter called the “HyDeploy Field Trial”) will last for one year of injection and is part of a Network Innovation Competition Project “HyDeploy”. The project aims to demonstrate that natural gas containing hydrogen at a level above that normally permitted by Schedule 3 of the GSMR can be safely and efficiently conveyed and inform decisions on the feasibility and strategy for wider deployment of natural gas containing hydrogen in Great Britain’s (GB’s) gas transmission and gas distribution systems.<br/>Click the supplements tab for the other documents from this report.
Role of Hydrogen-Charging on Nucleation and Growth of Ductile Damage in Austenitic Stainless Steels

Hydrogen energy is a possible solution for storage in the future. The resistance of packaging materials such as stainless steels has to be guaranteed for a possible use of these materials as containers for highly pressurized hydrogen. The effect of hydrogen charging on the nucleation and growth of microdamage in two different austenitic stainless steels AISI316 and AISI316L was studied using in situ tensile tests in synchrotron X-ray tomography. Information about damage nucleation void growth and void shape were obtained. AISI316 was found to be more sensitive to hydrogen compared to AISI316L in terms of ductility loss. It was measured that void nucleation and growth are not affected by hydrogen charging. The effect of hydrogen was however found to change the morphology of nucleated voids from spherical cavities to micro-cracks being oriented perpendicular to the tensile axis.
Graded Grain Structure to Improve Hydrogen-Embrittlement Resistance of TWIP Steel

The high strength of twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels makes them vulnerable to the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) phenomenon thereby limiting their potential applications. This study suggests inducing a graded grain structure (GGS) in a Fe-17Mn-0.8C TWIP steel through shot peening and subsequent heat treatment to solve the problem. The microstructures and fracture surfaces of GGS TWIP steel were compared with those of conventionally manufactured TWIP steel possessing a uniform grain structure (UGS). Compared with the conventional UGS TWIP steel GGS steel showed similar tensile properties with a yield strength of 310 MPa tensile strength of 1060 MPa and elongation-to-failure of 135%. It also exhibited moderately enhanced low-cycle fatigue (LCF) resistance in terms of fatigue life (8196 cycles to failure) compared with the UGS steel (7201 cycles). Furthermore GGS TWIP steel exhibited a marked improvement in HE resistance both in the monotonic (by a slow-strain-rate test) and cyclic deformation modes (by the LCF test) in a hydrogen environment. A relatively fine-grained (d = 15.6 μm) surficial area enhanced the HE resistance by inhibiting hydrogen penetration and decreasing twin density while the coarse-grained (d = 74.6 μm) interior promoted the LCF resistance by suppressing crack growth
