Injecting Hydrogen into the Gas Network- A Literature Search

Hydrogen injection into the GB gas network is a likely consequence of using excess offshore wind generated electricity to power large-scale onshore electrolysis plants. Government and DECC in particular now have a keen interest in supporting technologies that can take advantage of the continued use of the gas networks. HSE can contribute to the government’s Growth and Green agendas by effectively regulating and safely enabling this technology.
This report will allow HSE to regulate effectively by pulling together scientific and engineering knowledge regarding the hazards of conveying hydrogen/methane mixtures in network pipes and its use in consumer appliances into a single ‘state-of-play’ report. It enables Energy Division to consider and assess submissions for ‘gas quality’ exemptions to the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 (GSMR).
In particular the report has examined the following hazards:

Seasonal Energy Storage for Zero-emissions Multi-energy Systems Via Underground Hydrogen Storage

The deployment of diverse energy storage technologies with the combination of daily weekly and seasonal storage dynamics allows for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per unit energy provided. In particular the production storage and re-utilization of hydrogen starting from renewable energy has proven to be one of the most promising solutions for offsetting seasonal mismatch between energy generation and consumption. A realistic possibility for large-scale hydrogen storage suitable for long-term storage dynamics is presented by salt caverns. In this contribution we provide a framework for modelling underground hydrogen storage with a focus on salt caverns and we evaluate its potential for reducing the CO2 emissions within an integrated energy systems context. To this end we develop a first-principle model which accounts for the transport phenomena within the rock and describes the dynamics of the stored energy when injecting and withdrawing hydrogen. Then we derive a linear reduced order model that can be used for mixed-integer linear program optimization while retaining an accurate description of the storage dynamics under a variety of operating conditions. Using this new framework we determine the minimum-emissions design and operation of a multi-energy system with H2 storage. Ultimately we assess the potential of hydrogen storage for reducing CO2 emissions when different capacities for renewable energy production and energy storage are available mapping emissions regions on a plane defined by storage capacity and renewable generation. We extend the analysis for solar- and wind-based energy generation and for different energy demands representing typical profiles of electrical and thermal demands and different CO2 emissions associated with the electric grid.
Fast Synthesis of TiNi by Mechanical Alloying and its Hydrogenation Properties

Mechanical alloying is widely used for the synthesis of hydrogen storage materials. However amorphization and contamination triggered by long-time milling are serious drawbacks for obtaining efficient hydrogen storage. In this work short-time ball milling synthesis is explored for a representative hydride forming compound: TiNi. Through structural morphological and chemical characterizations we evidence that formation of TiNi is complete in only 20 min with minor Fe contamination (0.2 wt%). Cross-sectional analysis of powder stuck on milling balls reveals that alloy formation occurs through the interdiffusion between thin layers of co-laminated pure elements. Hydrogenation thermodynamics and kinetics of short-time mechanically alloyed TiNi are similar to those of coarse-grained compounds obtained by classical high-temperature melting. Mechanical alloying is a suitable method for fast and energy-efficient synthesis of intermetallic compounds such as TiNi.
Isotopic Tracing of Hydrogen Transport and Trapping in Nuclear Materials

Some illustrations of the use of deuterium or tritium for isotopic tracing of hydrogen absorption transport and trapping in nuclear materials are presented. Isotopic tracing of hydrogen has been shown to be successful for the determination of the boundaries conditions for hydrogen desorption or absorption in a material exposed to a hydrogen source. Also the unique capabilities of isotopic tracing and related techniques to characterize H interactions with point defects and dislocations acting as moving traps has been demonstrated. Such transport mechanisms are considered to play a major role in some stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms.

Concepts for Improving Hydrogen Storage in Nanoporous Materials

Hydrogen storage in nanoporous materials has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years as high gravimetric H2 capacities exceeding 10 wt% in some cases can be achieved at 77 K using materials with particularly high surface areas. However volumetric capacities at low temperatures and both gravimetric and volumetric capacities at ambient temperature need to be improved before such adsorbents become practically viable. This article therefore discusses approaches to increasing the gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen storage capacities of nanoporous materials and maximizing the usable capacity of a material between the upper storage and delivery pressures. In addition recent advances in machine learning and data science provide an opportunity to apply this technology to the search for new materials for hydrogen storage. The large number of possible component combinations and substitutions in various porous materials including Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is ideally suited to a machine learning approach; so this is also discussed together with some new material types that could prove useful in the future for hydrogen storage applications.
Stress Corrosion Cracking of Gas Pipeline Steels of Different Strength

With the development of the natural gas industry gas transmission pipelines have been developed rapidly in terms of safety economy and efficiency. Our recent studies have shown that an important factor of main pipelines serviceability loss under their long-term service is the in-bulk metal degradation of the pipe wall. This leads to the loss of the initial mechanical properties primarily resistance to brittle fracture which were set in engineering calculations at the pipeline design stage. At the same time stress corrosion cracking has been identified as one of the predominant failures in pipeline steels in humid environments which causes rupture of high-pressure gas transmission pipes as well as serious economic losses and disasters.
In the present work the low-carbon pipeline steels with different strength levels from the point of view of their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in the as-received state and after in-laboratory accelerated degradation under environmental conditions similar to those of an acidic soil were investigated. The main objectives of this study were to determine whether the development of higher strength materials led to greater susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking and whether degraded pipeline steels became more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than in the as-received state. The procedure of accelerated degradation of pipeline steels was developed and introduced in laboratory under the combined action of axial loading and hydrogen charging. It proved to be reliable and useful to performed laboratory simulation of in-service degradation of pipeline steels with different strength. The in-laboratory degraded 17H1S and X60 pipeline steels tested in the NS4 solution saturated with CO2 under open circuit potential revealed the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking reflected in the degradation of mechanical properties and at the same time the degraded X60 steel showed higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking than the degraded 17H1S steel. Fractographic observation confirmed the pipeline steels hydrogen embrittlement caused by the permeated hydrogen.

In Situ Formed Ultrafine Metallic Ni from Nickel (II) Acetylacetonate Precursor to Realize an Exceptional Hydrogen Storage Performance of MgH2–Ni-EG Nanocomposite

It has been well known that doping nano-scale catalysts can significantly improve both the kinetics and reversible hydrogen storage capacity of MgH2. However so far it is still a challenge to directly synthesize ultrafine catalysts (e.g. < 5 nm) mainly because of the complicated chemical reaction processes. Here a facile one-step high-energy ball milling process is developed to in situ form ultrafine Ni nanoparticles from the nickel acetylacetonate precursor in the MgH2 matrix. With the combined action of ultrafine metallic Ni and expanded graphite (EG) the formed MgH2–Ni-EG nanocomposite with the optimized doping amounts of Ni and EG can still release 7.03 wt.% H2 within 8.5 min at 300 °C after 10 cycles. At a temperature close to room temperature (50 °C) it can also absorb 2.42 wt.% H2 within 1 h It can be confirmed from the microstructural characterization analysis that the in situ formed ultrafine metallic Ni is transformed into Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 in the subsequent hydrogen absorption and desorption cycles. It is calculated that the dehydrogenation activation energy of the MgH2–Ni-EG nanocomposite is also reduced obviously in comparison with the pure MgH2. Our work provides a methodology to significantly improve the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 by combining the in situ formed and uniformly dispersed ultrafine metallic catalyst from the precursor and EG.
Model of Local Hydrogen Permeability in Stainless Steel with Two Coexisting Structures

The dynamics of hydrogen in metals with mixed grain structure is not well understood at a microscopic scale. One of the biggest issues facing the hydrogen economy is “hydrogen embrittlement” of metal induced by hydrogen entering and diffusing into the material. Hydrogen diffusion in metallic materials is difficult to grasp owing to the non-uniform compositions and structures of metal. Here a time-resolved “operando hydrogen microscope” was used to interpret local diffusion behaviour of hydrogen in the microstructure of a stainless steel with austenite and martensite structures. The martensite/austenite ratios differed in each local region of the sample. The path of hydrogen permeation was inferred from the time evolution of hydrogen permeation in several regions. We proposed a model of hydrogen diffusion in a dual-structure material and verified the validity of the model by simulations that took into account the transfer of hydrogen at the interfaces.
Unconventional Pearlitic Pseudocolonies Affecting Macro-, Micro- and Nano-structural Integrity of Cold-drawn Pearlitic Steel Wires: Resembling van Gogh, Bernini, Mantegna and Picasso

Prestressing steel wires are manufactured by cold drawing during which a preferential orientation is achieved in the matter of pearlitic colonies and lamellae. In addition to this general trend special (unconventional) pearlitic pseudocolonies evolve during the heavy-drawing manufacture process affecting the posterior macro- micro- and nano-structural integrity of the material. This paper discusses the important role of such a special microstructural unit (the pearlitic pseudocolony) in the fracture process in air (inert) environment in the presence of crack-like defects as well as in the case of environmentally assisted cracking (stress corrosion cracking by localized anodic dissolution) or hydrogen embrittlement. Results clearly demonstrate the key role of pearlitic pseudocolonies in promoting crack deflection (and thus mixed-mode propagation) after a global mode I cracking especially in the case of fracture in air and stress corrosion cracking.
Fractographic Features of Long Term Operated Gas Pipeline Steels Fracture Under Impact Loading

Pipelines during their service life subjected to operational degradation i.e. their mechanical characteristics worsened with time. Pronounced texture of pipe steels associated with their manufacturing process revealed itself in an essential difference in impact toughness determined for specimens cut in mutually perpendicular directions with respect to the pipe axis. Higher KCV values for longitudinal specimens as compared with transverse ones were explained by the difference in a length of perlite grain strips separated by ferrite grains in specimens of different orientation. A role of hydrogen absorbed my metal during its operation in steel degradation was discussed.<br/>The main fractographic peculiarity for the operated steels comparing to the steels in the initial state is the appearance of delamination on the fracture surfaces which are oriented in the rolling direction. Correlation was found for the tested steels between fractographic sings of their embrittlement due to operational degradation and their loss of brittle fracture resistance. It is concluded that a decrease of impact toughness caused by long term operation of pipeline steels is definitely concerned with the amount of delamination on the fracture surfaces.
Stress Corrosion Behavior of AM50Gd Magnesium Alloy in Different Environments

A new type of high strength corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy was prepared by adding 1% rare earth Gd to AM50 and then treated with hot extrusion method. The stress corrosion properties of the new materials in air pure water 0.5 mol/L NaCl and 0.5 mol/L Na2SO4 solution were studied by the slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test in situ open circuit potential test Tafel curve test stereomicroscope SEM and EDS. The results showed the following. The stress corrosion sensitivity of the material in different environments was Na2SO4> NaCl > distilled water > air. According to the Tafel curves measured at 0 and 100 MPa the corrosion voltage decreased little and the corrosion current density increased rapidly under 100 Pa. This was because the film of the corrosion product ruptured to form a large cathode and a small anode which resulted in a large instantaneous corrosion current. The mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement and anodic dissolution together affected the stress corrosion behavior of the alloy. In distilled water hydrogen embrittlement played a major role while in NaCl and Na2SO4solution hydrogen embrittlement and anodic dissolution were both affected. The direct reason of the stress corrosion crack (SCC) samples’ failure was the cracks expanding rapidly at the bottom of pit which was caused by corrosion.
Blue Hydrogen as an Enabler of Green Hydrogen: The Case of Germany

In Germany decarbonization of the electricity sector by fostering renewables and now phasing out coal-fired power is on track to reach the 2050 de-carbonisation targets while decarbonising non-electric energy consumption is proving to be more difficult. The present discussion of a national hydrogen strategy has run into strong political opposition against carbon sequestration as a necessary element in the use of decarbonized natural gas (blue hydrogen) and is aiming at the use of green hydrogen only (from renewable electricity and electrolysis). This paper shows that as long as the power sector is not decarbonized – not likely before 2040 – only marginal volumes of renewable electricity will be available to produce green hydrogen. To meet the decarbonization target by 2050 blue hydrogen has to fill that gap paving the way for green hydrogen at a later stage. The paper discusses the elements needed for an expedient development of blue hydrogen. It also points at the need and instruments to decarbonize core industries like the steel and chemical industry so that they can become future proof in competition with the US which is more advanced with a decarbonization strategy for its industry based on carbon sequestration.
Absence of Spillover of Hydrogen Adsorbed on Small Palladium Clusters Anchored to Graphene Vacancies

Experimental evidence exists for the enhancement of the hydrogen storage capacity of porous carbons when these materials are doped with metal nanoparticles. One of the most studied dopants is palladium. Dissociation of the hydrogen molecules and spillover of the H atoms towards the carbon substrate has been advocated as the reason for the enhancement of the storage capacity. We have investigated this mechanism by performing ab initio density functional molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the deposition of molecular hydrogen on Pd6 clusters anchored on graphene vacancies. The clusters are initially near-saturated with atomic and molecular hydrogen. This condition would facilitate the occurrence of spillover since our energy calculations based on density functional theory indicate that migration of preadsorbed H atoms towards the graphene substrate becomes exothermic on Pd clusters with high hydrogen coverages. However AIMD simulations show that the H atoms prefer to intercalate and absorb within the Pd cluster rather than migrate to the carbon substrate. These results reveal that high activation barriers exist preventing the spillover of hydrogen from the anchored Pd clusters to the carbon substrate.
Brittle Fracture Manifestation in Gas Pipeline Steels after Long-term Operation

Gas pipelines are exposed to operational loads combined with corrosive environment action during their long-term service. Complicated service conditions lead to a worsening of steel properties a reduction of serviceability of the whole object therefore a risk of its premature failure rises. Aware of the importance of the existing problem the aim of this study is the analysis of various mechanical properties of steels after their long-term operation on gas pipelines and detecting and evaluating fractographic signs of this degradation.<br/>Mechanical properties of operated pipe steels characterizing their brittle fracture resistance were significantly decreased. Delamination areas as one of a feature of brittle fracture were identified on the fracture surfaces of specimens after SSRT of the operated steels in corrosive environment. Fracture was initiated from the outer surface of the specimens along the boundaries of ferrite and pearlite grains with significant secondary cracking.<br/>The obvious texture in the steels affects noticeably the results of the impact tests. Higher KCV values for the specimens cut in the longitudinal direction relative to the pipe axis comparing with the specimens of transversal orientation were obtained. This was explained by different length of narrow pearlite strips alternated by wide ferrite bands and interrupted by individual ferrite grains depending on the orientation of the specimen fracture surface relative to the pipe axis. Thus a proper direction of specimen cutting to achieve the maximum sensitivity of KCV parameter to operational degradation of steels is discussed. The effect of specimen orientation on the results of the Charpy testing becomes much more pronounced with steel operation. Defects accumulated in steels during their service are preferentially oriented in the pipe axial direction along the boundaries between ferrite and pearlite strips. Analyzing the fracture surfaces of the Charpy specimens after their impact testing certain signs of embrittlement were found for long term operated steels in the form of delaminations varying in size and shape and some cleavage fragments. Furthermore their percentage of total fracture surface (generally formed by dimples) correlates well with a drop in the impact toughness. The established relationship could be the basis for the introduction of fractographic criteria of the steel serviceability.
Green Synthesis of Olefin-linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Applications

Green synthesis of crystalline porous materials for energy-related applications is of great significance but very challenging. Here we create a green strategy to fabricate a highly crystalline olefin-linked pyrazine-based covalent organic framework (COF) with high robustness and porosity under solvent-free conditions. The abundant nitrogen sites high hydrophilicity and well-defined one-dimensional nanochannels make the resulting COF an ideal platform to confine and stabilize the H3PO4 network in the pores through hydrogen-bonding interactions. The resulting material exhibits low activation energy (Ea) of 0.06 eV and ultrahigh proton conductivity across a wide relative humidity (10–90 %) and temperature range (25–80 °C). A realistic proton exchange membrane fuel cell using the olefin-linked COF as the solid electrolyte achieve a maximum power of 135 mW cm−2 and a current density of 676 mA cm−2 which exceeds all reported COF materials.
Optimisation-based System Designs for Deep Offshore Wind Farms including Power to Gas Technologies

A large deployment of energy storage solutions will be required by the stochastic and non-controllable nature of most renewable energy sources when planning for higher penetration of renewable electricity into the energy mix. Various solutions have been suggested for dealing with medium- and long-term energy storage. Hydrogen and ammonia are two of the most frequently discussed as they are both carbon-free fuels. In this paper the authors analyse the energy and cost efficiency of hydrogen and ammonia-based pathways for the storage transportation and final use of excess electricity from an offshore wind farm. The problem is solved as a linear programming problem simultaneously optimising the size of each problem unit and the respective time-dependent operational conditions. As a case study we consider an offshore wind farm of 1.5 GW size located in a reference location North of Scotland. The energy efficiency and cost of the whole chain are evaluated and compared with competitive alternatives namely batteries and liquid hydrogen storage. The results show that hydrogen and ammonia storage can be part of the optimal solution. Moreover their use for long-term energy storage can provide a significant cost-effective contribution to an extensive penetration of renewable energy sources in national energy systems.
Analysis of Stress Corrosion Cracking in X80 Pipeline Steel: An Approach from the Theory of Critical Distances

This paper presents an analysis of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) based on the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD). The research is based on an experimental program composed of fracture specimens with notch radius varying from 0 mm (crack-like defect) up to 1 mm and tensile specimens. A pipeline steel was used in this work (X80). It has been analysed in one hydrogen embrittlement situation. The study has been completed with Finite Elements Simulation analysis. The capacity of the TCD to analyse SCC processes has been proven.
Failure Analysis of Cooling Duct of Top Engine Cowl Panel of Fighter Aircraft

Present work describes the failure analysis of cooling duct of a fighter aircraft. The analyzed chemical composition of cooling duct indicates that it is manufactured from Al-based alloy (AA 3003 or its equivalent). Microstructure of cooling duct displays the presence of two phases namely matrix and insoluble particles. The hardness values at different locations within damaged area of cooling duct reflect nearly same and consistent. The fracture surface of the cooling duct exhibits transgranular features and cracks with little branching. The analyzed hydrogen content in cooling duct is significantly higher (∼ 12 ppm) than the specified one (< 1 ppm). However the alloy used to fabricate cooling duct is not susceptible to typical hydrogen embrittlement. This shows hydrogen pick up during operation. The presence of cracks with branching does reflect features of hydrogen embrittlement. In addition striations indicative of fatigue features are also observed. It thus appears that the cooling duct has failed due to pick up of large amount of hydrogen as well as vibrational fatigue.
On the Concept of Micro-fracture Map (MFM) and its Role in Structural Integrity Evaluations in Materials Science and Engineering: A Tribute to Jorge Manrique

This paper deals with the concept of micro-fracture map (MFM) and its role in structural integrity evaluations in materials science and engineering on the basis of previous research by the author on notch-induced fracture and hydrogen embrittlement of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels and 316L austenitic stainless steel. With regard to this some examples are provided of assembly of MFMs in particular situations.
Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of an Autonomous Power System Based on Hydrocarbon Reforming and High Temperature Fuel Cell

The integration and control of energy systems for power generation consists of multiple heterogeneous subsystems such as chemical electrochemical and thermal and contains challenges that arise from the multi-way interactions due to complex dynamic responses among the involved subsystems. The main motivation of this work is to design the control system for an autonomous automated and sustainable system that meets a certain power demand profile. A systematic methodology for the integration and control of a hybrid system that converts liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to hydrogen which is subsequently used to generate electrical power in a high-temperature fuel cell that charges a Li-Ion battery unit is presented. An advanced nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework is implemented to achieve this goal. The operational objective is the satisfaction of power demand while maintaining operation within a safe region and ensuring thermal and chemical balance. The proposed NMPC framework based on experimentally validated models is evaluated through simulation for realistic operation scenarios that involve static and dynamic variations of the power load.
Assessment of Operational Degradation of Pipeline Steels

This paper summarizes a series of the authors’ research in the field of assessing the operational degradation of oil and gas transit pipeline steels. Both mechanical and electrochemical properties of steels are deteriorated after operation as is their resistance to environmentally-assisted cracking. The characteristics of resistance to brittle fracture and stress corrosion cracking decrease most intensively which is associated with a development of in-bulk dissipated microdamages of the material. The most sensitive indicators of changes in the material’s state caused by degradation are impact toughness and fracture toughness by the J-integral method. The degradation degree of pipeline steels can also be evaluated nondestructively based on in-service changes in their polarization resistance and potential of the fracture surface. Attention is drawn to hydrogenation of a pipe wall from inside as a result of the electrochemical interaction of pipe metal with condensed moisture which facilitates operational degradation of steel due to the combined action of operating stresses and hydrogen. The development of microdamages along steel texture was evidenced metallographically as a trend to the selective etching of boundaries between adjacent bands of ferrite and pearlite and fractographically by revealing brittle fracture elements on the fracture surfaces namely delamination and cleavage indicating the sites of cohesion weakening between ferrite and pearlite bands. The state of the X52 steel in its initial state and after use for 30 years was assessed based on the numerical simulation method.
Enhancing the Hydrogen Storage Properties of AxBy Intermetallic Compounds by Partial Substitution: A Short Review

Solid-state hydrogen storage covers a broad range of materials praised for their gravimetric volumetric and kinetic properties as well as for the safety they confer compared to gaseous or liquid hydrogen storage methods. Among them AxBy intermetallics show outstanding performances notably for stationary storage applications. Elemental substitution whether on the A or B site of these alloys allows the effective tailoring of key properties such as gravimetric density equilibrium pressure hysteresis and cyclic stability for instance. In this review we present a brief overview of partial substitution in several AxBy alloys from the long-established AB5 and AB2-types to the recently attractive and extensively studied AB and AB3 alloys including the largely documented solid-solution alloy systems. We not only present classical and pioneering investigations but also report recent developments for each AxBy category. Special care is brought to the influence of composition engineering on desorption equilibrium pressure and hydrogen storage capacity. A simple overview of the AxBy operating conditions is provided hence giving a sense of the range of possible applications whether for low- or high-pressure systems.
Australian Hydrogen Hubs Study

Arup have conducted interviews with targeted industry and government stakeholders to gather data and perspectives to support the development of this study. Arup have also utilised private and publicly available data sources building on recent work undertaken by Geoscience Australia and Deloitte and the comprehensive stakeholder engagement process to inform our research. This study considers the supply chain and infrastructure requirements to support the development of export and domestic hubs. The study aims to provide a succinct “Hydrogen Hubs” report for presentation to the hydrogen working group.
The hydrogen supply chain infrastructure required to produce hydrogen for export and domestic hubs was identified along with feedback from the stakeholder engagement process. These infrastructure requirements can be used to determine the factors for assessing export and domestic hub opportunities. Hydrogen production pathways transportation mechanisms and uses were also further evaluated to identify how hubs can be used to balance supply and demand of hydrogen.
A preliminary list of current or anticipated locations has been developed through desktop research Arup project knowledge and the stakeholder consultation process. Over 30 potential hydrogen export locations have been identified in Australia through desktop research and the stakeholder survey and consultation process. In addition to establishing export hubs the creation of domestic demand hubs will be essential to the development of an Australian hydrogen economy. It is for this reason that a list of criteria has been developed for stakeholders to consider in the siting and design of hydrogen hubs. The key considerations explored are based on demand supply chain infrastructure and investment and policy areas.
Based on these considerations a list of criteria were developed to assess the viability of export and domestic hydrogen hubs. Criteria relevant to assessing the suitability of export and domestic hubs include:

- Availability of or potential for water (recycled & desalinated);
- Opportunity for co-location with industrial ammonia production and future industrial opportunities;
- Interest (projects priority ports state development areas politics etc.);
- Shipping distance to target market (Japan & South Korea);
- Availability of demand-based infrastructure (i.e. refuelling stations).

Balancing Wind-power Fluctuation Via Onsite Storage Under Uncertainty Power-to-hydrogen-to-power Versus Lithium Battery

Imbalance costs caused by forecasting errors are considerable for grid-connected wind farms. In order to reduce such costs two onsite storage technologies i.e. power-to-hydrogen-to-power and lithium battery are investigated considering 14 uncertain technological and economic parameters. Probability density distributions of wind forecasting errors and power level are first considered to quantify the imbalance and excess wind power. Then robust optimal sizing of the onsite storage is performed under uncertainty to maximize wind-farm profit (the net present value). Global sensitivity analysis is further carried out for parameters prioritization to highlight the key influential parameters. The results show that the profit of power-to-hydrogen-to-power case is sensitive to the hydrogen price wind forecasting accuracy and hydrogen storage price. When hydrogen price ranges in (2 6) €/kg installing only electrolyzer can earn profits over 100 k€/MWWP in 9% scenarios with capacity below 250 kW/MWWP under high hydrogen price (over 4 €/kg); while installing only fuel cell can achieve such high profits only in 1.3% scenarios with capacity below 180 kW/MWWP. Installing both electrolyzer and fuel cell (only suggested in 22% scenarios) results in profits below 160 k€/MWWP and particularly 20% scenarios allow for a profit below 50 k€/MWWP due to the contradictory effects of wind forecasting error hydrogen and electricity price. For lithium battery investment cost is the single highly influential factor which should be reduced to 760 €/kWh. The battery capacity is limited to 88 kW h/MWWP. For profits over 100 k€/MWWP (in 3% scenarios) the battery should be with an investment cost below 510 €/kWh and a depth of discharge over 63%. The power-to-hydrogen-to-power case is more advantageous in terms of profitability reliability and utilization factor (full-load operating hours) while lithium battery is more helpful to reduce the lost wind and has less environmental impact considering current hydrogen market.
Thermoacoustic Instability Considerations for High Hydrogen Combustion in Lean Premixed Gas Turbine Combustors: A Review

Hydrogen is receiving increasing attention as a versatile energy vector to help accelerate the transition to a decarbonised energy future. Gas turbines will continue to play a critical role in providing grid stability and resilience in future low-carbon power systems; however it is recognised that this role is contingent upon achieving increased thermal efficiencies and the ability to operate on carbon-neutral fuels such as hydrogen. An important consideration in the development of gas turbine combustors capable of operating with pure hydrogen or hydrogen-enriched natural gas are the significant changes in thermoacoustic instability characteristics associated with burning these fuels. This article provides a review of the effects of burning hydrogen on combustion dynamics with focus on swirl-stabilised lean-premixed combustors. Experimental and numerical evidence suggests hydrogen can have either a stabilising or destabilising impact on the dynamic state of a combustor through its influence particularly on flame structure and flame position. Other operational considerations such as the effect of elevated pressure and piloting on combustion dynamics as well as recent developments in micromix burner technology for 100% hydrogen combustion have also been discussed. The insights provided in this review will aid the development of instability mitigation strategies for high hydrogen combustion.
Towards Non-Mechanical Hybrid Hydrogen Compression for Decentralized Hydrogen Facilities

The cost of the hydrogen value chain needs to be reduced to allow the widespread development of hydrogen applications. Mechanical compressors widely used for compressing hydrogen to date account for more than 50% of the CAPEX (capital expenditure) in a hydrogen refuelling station. Moreover mechanical compressors have several disadvantages such as the presence of many moving parts hydrogen embrittlement and high consumption of energy. Non-mechanical hydrogen compressors have proven to be a valid alternative to mechanical compressors. Among these electrochemical compressors allow isothermal and therefore highly efficient compression of hydrogen. On the other hand adsorption-desorption compressors allow hydrogen to be compressed through cooling/heating cycles using highly microporous materials as hydrogen adsorbents. A non-mechanical hybrid hydrogen compressor consisting of a first electrochemical stage followed by a second stage driven by adsorption-desorption of hydrogen on activated carbons allows hydrogen to be produced at 70 MPa a value currently required for the development of hydrogen automotive applications. This system has several advantages over mechanical compressors such as the absence of moving parts and high compactness. Comparison of Hydrogen Powertrains with the Battery Powered Electric Vehicle and Investigation of Small-Scale Local Hydrogen Production Using Renewable Energy

Climate change is one of the major problems that people face in this century with fossil fuel combustion engines being huge contributors. Currently the battery powered electric vehicle is considered the predecessor while hydrogen vehicles only have an insignificant market share. To evaluate if this is justified different hydrogen power train technologies are analyzed and compared to the battery powered electric vehicle. Even though most research focuses on the hydrogen fuel cells it is shown that despite the lower efficiency the often-neglected hydrogen combustion engine could be the right solution for transitioning away from fossil fuels. This is mainly due to the lower costs and possibility of the use of existing manufacturing infrastructure. To achieve a similar level of refueling comfort as with the battery powered electric vehicle the economic and technological aspects of the local small-scale hydrogen production are being investigated. Due to the low efficiency and high prices for the required components this domestically produced hydrogen cannot compete with hydrogen produced from fossil fuels on a larger scale
Evaluation of Blistered and Cold Deformed ULC Steel with Melt Extraction and Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy

Hydrogen characterization techniques like melt extraction and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) are useful tools in order to evaluate and understand the interaction between hydrogen and metals. These two techniques are used here on cold deformed ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel with and without hydrogen induced damage. The material is charged electrochemically in order to induce varying amounts of hydrogen and variable degrees of hydrogen induced damage. The aim of this work is to evaluate to which extent the hydrogen induced damage would manifest itself in melt extraction and TDS measurements.
Criticality and Life-Cycle Assessment of Materials Used in Fuel-Cell and Hydrogen Technologies

The purpose of this paper is to obtain relevant data on materials that are the most commonly used in fuel-cell and hydrogen technologies. The focus is on polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells solid-oxide fuel cells polymer-electrolyte-membrane water electrolysers and alkaline water electrolysers. An innovative methodological approach was developed for a preliminary material assessment of the four technologies. This methodological approach leads to a more rapid identification of the most influential or critical materials that substantially increase the environmental impact of fuel-cell and hydrogen technologies. The approach also assisted in amassing the life-cycle inventories—the emphasis here is on the solid-oxide fuel-cell technology because it is still in its early development stage and thus has a deficient materials’ database—that were used in a life-cycle assessment for an in-depth material-criticality analysis. All the listed materials—that either are or could potentially be used in these technologies—were analysed to give important information for the fuel-cell and hydrogen industries the recycling industry the hydrogen economy as well as policymakers. The main conclusion from the life-cycle assessment is that the polymer-electrolyte membrane water electrolysers have the highest environmental impacts; lower impacts are seen in polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells and solid-oxide fuel cells while the lowest impacts are observed in alkaline water electrolysers. The results of the material assessment are presented together for all the considered materials but also separately for each observed technology.
Critical Review of Models for H2-permeation Through Polymers with Focus on the Differential Pressure Method

To reduce loss of hydrogen in storage vessels with high energy-to-weight-ratio new materials especially polymers have to be developed as barrier materials. Very established methods for characterization of barrier materials with permeation measurements are the time-lag and flow rate method along with the differential pressure method which resembles the nature of hydrogen vessel systems very well. Long measurement durations are necessary to gain suitable measurement data for these evaluation methods and often restrictive conditions have to be fulfilled. For these reasons common models for hydrogen permeation through single-layer and multi-layer membranes as well as models for hydrogen gas properties were collected and reviewed. Using current computer power together with these models can reduce measurement time for characterization of the barrier properties of materials while additional information about the quality of the measurement results is obtained.
Controllable H2 Generation by Formic Acid Decomposition on a Novel Pd/Templated Carbon Catalyst

A novel Pd/templated carbon catalyst (Pd/TC) was developed characterized and tested in the dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) under mild conditions with the possibility to control the H2 generation rate in the absence or presence of HCOONa (SF) by adjusting the Pd:FA and/or FA:SF ratios. The characterization results of the templated carbon obtained by the chemical vapor deposition of acetylene on NaY zeolite revealed different structural and morphological properties compared to other C-based supports. Therefore it was expected to induce a different catalytic behavior for the Pd/TC catalyst. Indeed the TC-supported Pd catalyst exhibited superior activity in the decomposition of FA even at room temperature with turnover frequencies (TOFs) of up to 143.7 and 218.8 h−1 at 60 °C. The H2 generation rate increased with an increasing temperature while the H2 yield increased with a decreasing FA concentration. Constant generation of gaseous flow (H2 + CO2) was achieved for 11 days by the complete dehydrogenation of FA at room temperature using a 2 M FA solution and Pd:FA = 1:2100. The presence of SF in the reaction medium significantly enhanced the H2 generation rate (535 h−1 for FA:SF = 3:1 and 60 °C).
Hydrogen Embrittlement Evaluation of Micro Alloyed Steels by Means of J-Integral Curve

The aim of this work is the evaluation of the hydrogen effect on the J-integral parameter. It is well-known that the micro alloyed steels are affected by Hydrogen Embrittlement phenomena only when they are subjected at the same time to plastic deformation and hydrogen evolution at their surface. Previous works have pointed out the absence of Hydrogen Embrittlement effects on pipeline steels cathodically protected under static load conditions. On the contrary in slow strain rate tests it is possible to observe the effect of the imposed potential and the strain rate on the hydrogen embrittlement steel behavior only after the necking of the specimens. J vs. Δa curves were measured on different pipeline steels in air and in aerated NaCl 3.5 g/L solution at free corrosion potential or under cathodic polarization at −1.05 and −2 V vs. SCE. The area under the J vs. Δa curves and the maximum crack propagation rate were taken into account. These parameters were compared with the ratio between the reduction of area in environment and in air obtained by slow strain rate test in the same environmental conditions and used to rank the different steels.
Impact of Chemical Inhomogeneities on Local Material Properties and Hydrogen Environment Embrittlement in AISI 304L Steels

This study investigated the influence of segregations on hydrogen environment embrittlement (HEE) of AISI 304L type austenitic stainless steels. The microstructure of tensile specimens that were fabricated from commercially available AISI 304L steels and tested by means of small strain-rate tensile tests in air as well as hydrogen gas at room temperature was investigated by means of combined EDS and EBSD measurements. It was shown that two different austenitic stainless steels having the same nominal alloy composition can exhibit different susceptibilities to HEE due to segregation effects resulting from different production routes (continuous casting/electroslag remelting). Local segregation-related variations of the austenite stability were evaluated by thermodynamic and empirical calculations. The alloying element Ni exhibits pronounced segregation bands parallel to the rolling direction of the material which strongly influences the local austenite stability. The latter was revealed by generating and evaluating two-dimensional distribution maps for the austenite stability. The formation of deformation-induced martensite was shown to be restricted to segregation bands with a low Ni content. Furthermore it was shown that the formation of hydrogen induced surface cracks is strongly coupled with the existence of surface regions of low Ni content and accordingly low austenite stability. In addition the growth behavior of hydrogen-induced cracks was linked to the segregation-related local austenite stability.
Fuelling the Hydrogen Economy: Scale-up of an Integrated Formic Acid-to-power System

Transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable and green energy sources in mobile applications is a difficult challenge and demands sustained and highly multidisciplinary efforts in R&D. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) offer several advantages over more conventional energy storage solutions but have not been yet demonstrated at scale. Herein we describe the development of an integrated and compact 25 kW formic acid-to-power system by a team of BSc and MSc students. We highlight a number of key engineering challenges encountered during scale-up of the technology and discuss several aspects commonly overlooked by academic researchers. Conclusively we provide a critical outlook and suggest a number of developmental areas currently inhibiting further implementation of the technology.
Effect of Hydrogen on Fatigue Limit of SCM435 Low-Alloy Steel

The objective of this study is to gain a basic understanding of the effect of hydrogen on the fatigue limit. The material was a low-alloy steel modified to be sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement by heat treatment. A statistical fatigue test was carried out using smooth and deep-notched specimens at a loading frequency of 20 Hz. The environment was laboratory air and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas pressure was 0.1 MPa in gauge pressure. The fatigue limit of the smooth specimen was higher in the hydrogen gas than that in air although the material showed severe hydrogen embrittlement during the SSRT (Slow Strain Rate Test). The fatigue limit of the deep-notched specimen in the hydrogen gas was the same as that in air. For the smooth specimen the fatigue limit was determined by whether or not a crack was initiated. For the deep-notched specimen the fatigue limit was determined by whether or not a crack propagated. The results can be interpreted as that hydrogen has no significant effect on crack initiation in the high-cycle fatigue regime and affected the threshold of the crack propagation.
Scale-up of Milling in a 100 L Device for Processing of TiFeMn Alloy for Hydrogen Storage Applications: Procedure and characterization

In this work the mechanical milling of a FeTiMn alloy for hydrogen storage purposes was performed in an industrial milling device. The TiFe hydride is interesting from the technological standpoint because of the abundance and the low cost of its constituent elements Ti and Fe as well as its high volumetric hydrogen capacity. However TiFe is difficult to activate usually requiring a thermal treatment above 400 °C. A TiFeMn alloy milled for just 10 min in a 100 L industrial milling device showed excellent hydrogen storage properties without any thermal treatment. The as-milled TiFeMn alloy did not need any activation procedure and showed fast kinetic behavior and good cycling stability. Microstructural and morphological characterization of the as-received and as-milled TiFeMn alloys revealed that the material presents reduced particle and crystallite sizes even after such short time of milling. The refined microstructure of the as-milled TiFeMn is deemed to account for the improved hydrogen absorption-desorption properties.
H21- Leeds City Gate Project Report

The H21 Leeds City Gate project is a study with the aim of determining the feasibility from both a technical and economic viewpoint of converting the existing natural gas network in Leeds one of the largest UK cities to 100% hydrogen. The project has been designed to minimise disruption for existing customers and to deliver heat at the same cost as current natural gas to customers. The project has shown that:

Stress–Corrosion Cracking of AISI 316L Stainless Steel in Seawater Environments: Effect of Surface Machining

To understand the effect of surface machining on the resistance of AISI 316L to SCC (stress–corrosion cracking) in marine environments we tested nuts surface-machined by different methods in a seawater-spraying chamber. Two forms of cracks were observed: on the machined surface and underneath it. On the surface cracks connected with the pitting sites were observed to propagate perpendicular to the hoop-stress direction identifying them as stress–corrosion cracks. Under the surface catastrophic transgranular cracks developed likely driven by hydrogen embrittlement caused by the chloride-concentrating level of humidity in the testing environment. Under constant testing conditions significantly different SCC resistance was observed depending on how the nuts had been machined. Statistical evaluation of the nut surface-crack density indicates that machining by a “form” tool yields a crack density one order of magnitude lower than machining by a “single-point” tool. Microstructural analysis of form-tool-machined nuts revealed a homogeneous deformed subsurface zone with nanosized grains leading to enhanced surface hardness. Apparently the reduced grain size and/or the associated mechanical hardening improve resistance to SCC. The nanograin subsurface zone was not observed on nuts machined by a single-point tool. Surface roughness measurements indicate that single-point-tool-machined nuts have a rougher surface than form-tool machined nuts. Apparently surface roughness reduces SCC resistance by increasing the susceptibility to etch attack in Cl--rich solutions. The results of X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy diffractometry indicate that machining with either tool generates a small volume fraction (< 0.01) of strain-induced martensite. However considering the small volume fraction and absence of martensite in regions of cracking martensite is not primarily responsible for SCC in marine environments.
Seasonal Energy Storage in Aluminium for 100 Percent Solar Heat and Electricity Supply

In order to reduce anthropogenic global warming governments around the world have decided to reduce CO2 emissions from fossil fuels dramatically within the next decades. In moderate and cold climates large amounts of fossil fuels are used for space heating and domestic hot water production in winter. Although on an annual base solar energy is available in large quantities in these regions least of the solar resource is available in winter when most of the energy is needed. Therefore solutions are needed to store and transfer renewable energy from summer to winter. In this paper a seasonal energy storage based on the aluminium redox cycle (Al3+→Al→ Al3+) is proposed. For charging electricity from solar or other renewable sources is used to convert aluminium oxide or aluminium hydroxide to elementary aluminium (Al3+→Al). In the discharging process aluminium is oxidized (Al→Al3+) releasing hydrogen heat and aluminium hydroxide or aluminium oxide as a by-product. Hydrogen is used in a fuel cell to produce electricity. Heat produced from the aluminium oxidation process and by the fuel cell is used for domestic hot water production and space heating. The chemical reactions and energy balances are presented and simulation results are shown for a system that covers the entire energy demand for electricity space heating and domestic hot water of a new multi-family building with rooftop photovoltaic energy in combination with the seasonal Al energy storage cycle. It shows that 7–11 kWp of photovoltaic installations and 350–530 kg Al would be needed per apartment for different Swiss climates. Environmental life cycle data shows that the global warming potential and non-renewable primary energy consumption can be reduced significantly compared to today's common practice of heating with natural gas and using electricity from the ENTSO-E network. The presumptive cost were estimated and indicate a possible cost-competitiveness for this system in the near future.
A Hybrid Energy Storage System Using Compressed Air and Hydrogen as the Energy Carrier

In this paper an innovative concept of an energy storage system that combines the idea of energy storage through the use of compressed air and the idea of energy storage through the use of hydrogen (with its further conversion to synthetic natural gas) has been proposed. The thermal integration of two sub-systems allows for efficient storage of large amounts of energy based on the use of pressure tanks with limited volumes. A thermodynamic assessment of the integrated hybrid system was carried out. For the assumed operation parameters an energy storage efficiency value of 38.15% was obtained which means the technology is competitive with intensively developed pure hydrogen energy storage technologies. The results obtained for the hybrid system were compared to the results obtained for three reference systems each of which uses hydrogen generators. The first is a typical Power-to-H2-to-Power system which integrates hydrogen generators with a fuel cell system. The other two additionally use a compressed air energy storage installation. In the first case the compressed air energy storage system consists of a diabatic system. In the second case the compressed air energy storage system is adiabatic. The article has discussed the disadvantages and advantages of all the analyzed systems.
Structural Model of Power Grid Stabilization in the Green Hydrogen Supply Chain System—Conceptual Assumptions

The paper presents the conceptual assumptions of research concerning the design of a theoretical multi-criteria model of a system architecture to stabilize the operation of power distribution networks based on a hydrogen energy buffer taking into account the utility application of hydrogen. The basis of the research process was a systematic literature review using the technique of in-depth analysis of full-text articles and expert consultations. The structural model concept was described in two dimensions in which the identified variables were embedded. The first dimension includes the supply chain phases: procurement and production with warehousing and distribution. A Novel Emergency Gas-to-Power System Based on an Efficient and Long-Lasting Solid-State Hydride Storage System: Modeling and Experimental Validation

In this paper a gas-to-power (GtoP) system for power outages is digitally modeled and experimentally developed. The design includes a solid-state hydrogen storage system composed of TiFeMn as a hydride forming alloy (6.7 kg of alloy in five tanks) and an air-cooled fuel cell (maximum power: 1.6 kW). The hydrogen storage system is charged under room temperature and 40 bar of hydrogen pressure reaching about 110 g of hydrogen capacity. In an emergency use case of the system hydrogen is supplied to the fuel cell and the waste heat coming from the exhaust air of the fuel cell is used for the endothermic dehydrogenation reaction of the metal hydride. This GtoP system demonstrates fast stable and reliable responses providing from 149 W to 596 W under different constant as well as dynamic conditions. A comprehensive and novel simulation approach based on a network model is also applied. The developed model is validated under static and dynamic power load scenarios demonstrating excellent agreement with the experimental results.

Expectations for energy storage are high but large-scale underground hydrogen storage in porous media (UHSP) remains largely untested. This article identifies and discusses the scientific challenges of hydrogen storage in porous media for safe and efficient large-scale energy storage to enable a global hydrogen economy. To facilitate hydrogen supply on the scales required for a zero-carbon future it must be stored in porous geological formations such as saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. Large-scale UHSP offers the much-needed capacity to balance inter-seasonal discrepancies between demand and supply decouple energy generation from demand and decarbonise heating and transport supporting decarbonisation of the entire energy system. Despite the vast opportunity provided by UHSP the maturity is considered low and as such UHSP is associated with several uncertainties and challenges. Here the safety and economic impacts triggered by poorly understood key processes are identified such as the formation of corrosive hydrogen sulfide gas hydrogen loss due to the activity of microbes or permeability changes due to geochemical interactions impacting on the predictability of hydrogen flow through porous media. The wide range of scientific challenges facing UHSP are outlined to improve procedures and workflows for the hydrogen storage cycle from site selection to storage site operation. Multidisciplinary research including reservoir engineering chemistry geology and microbiology more complex than required for CH4 or CO2 storage is required in order to implement the safe efficient and much needed large-scale commercial deployment of UHSP.
Radiation Damage of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Studied by Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy—A Review

Safe and long term operation of nuclear reactors is one of the most discussed challenges in nuclear power engineering. The radiation degradation of nuclear design materials limits the operational lifetime of all nuclear installations or at least decreases its safety margin. This paper is a review of experimental PALS/PLEPS studies of different nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels investigated over last twenty years in our laboratories. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) via its characteristics (lifetimes of positrons and their intensities) provides useful information about type and density of radiation induced defects. The new results obtained on neutron-irradiated and hydrogen ions implanted German steels were compared to those from the previous studies with the aim to evaluate different processes (neutron flux/fluence thermal treatment or content of selected alloying elements) to the microstructural changes of neutron irradiated RPV steel specimens. The possibility of substitution of neutron treatment (connected to new defects creation) via hydrogen ions implantation was analyzed as well. The same materials exposed to comparable displacement damage (dpa) introduced by neutrons and accelerated hydrogen ions shown that in the results interpretation the effect of hydrogen as a vacancy-stabilizing gas must be considered too. This approach could contribute to future studies of nuclear fission/fusion design steels treated by high levels of neutron irradiation.
Irreproducibility in Hydrogen Storage Material Research

The storage of hydrogen in materials has received a significant amount of attention in recent years because this approach is widely thought to be one of the most promising solutions to the problem of storing hydrogen for use as an alternative energy carrier in a safe compact and affordable form. However there have been a number of high profile cases in which erroneous or irreproducible data have been published. Meanwhile the irreproducibility of research results in a wide range of disciplines has been the subject of an increasing amount of attention due to problems with some of the data in the literature. In this Perspective we provide a summary of the problems that have affected hydrogen storage material research. We also discuss the reasons behind them and possible ways of reducing the likelihood of further problems occurring in the future.
The Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2–Fe7S8 Composites

Nanostructured Fe7S8 was successfully synthesized and its catalytic effect on hydrogen absorption/desorption performance of MgH22 is systemically discussed. The MgH2 + 16.7 wt% Fe7S8 composite prepared by ball-milling method offers a striking catalytic activity for hydrogenation kinetics and also reduces the initial decomposition temperature for MgH22. The composite of MgH2–Fe7S8 can absorb 4.000 wt% of hydrogen within 1800 s at 473 K which is about twice that of pristine MgH2 (1.847 wt%) under the same conditions. The onset hydrogen release temperature of Fe7S8-modified MgH2 is 420 K which is 290 K lower than that of additive-free MgH2 (710 K). Meanwhile the doped sample could release 4.403 wt% of hydrogen within 1800 s at 623 K as compared to 2.479 wt% of hydrogen by MgH2. The activation energy for MgH2–Fe7S8 is about 130.0 kJ mol−1 approximately 36 kJ mol−1 lower than that of MgH2. The hydriding process of MgH2 + 16.7 wt% Fe7S8 follows the nucleation and growth mechanism. The prominent hydrogen storage performances are related to the reactions between MgH2 and Fe7S8. The newly formed MgS and Fe in the ball-milling process present a co-catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH22.
Influence of Thermal Treatment on SCC and HE Susceptibility of Supermartensitic Stainless Steel 16Cr5NiMo

A 16Cr5NiMo supermartensitic stainless steel was subjected to different tempering treatments and analyzed by means of permeation tests and slow strain rate tests to investigate the effect of different amounts of retained austenite on its hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility. The 16Cr5NiMo steel class is characterized by a very low carbon content. It is the new variant of 13Cr4Ni. These steels are used in many applications for example compressors for sour environments offshore piping naval propellers aircraft components and subsea applications. The typical microstructure is a soft-tempered martensite very close to a body-centered cubic with a retained austenite fraction and limited δ ferrite phase. Supermartensitic stainless steels have high mechanical properties together with good weldability and corrosion resistance. The amount of retained austenite is useful to increase low temperature toughness and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Experimental techniques allowed us to evaluate diffusion coefficients and the mechanical behaviour of metals in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) conditions.
Hydrogen Storage Using a Hot Pressure Swing Reactor

Our contribution demonstrates that hydrogen storage in stationary Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) systems becomes much simpler and significantly more efficient if both the LOHC hydrogenation and the LOHC dehydrogenation reaction are carried out in the same reactor using the same catalyst. The finding that the typical dehydrogenation catalyst for hydrogen release from perhydro dibenzyltoluene (H18-DBT) Pt on alumina turns into a highly active and very selective dibenzyltoluene hydrogenation catalyst at temperatures above 220 °C paves the way for our new hydrogen storage concept. Herein hydrogenation of H0-DBT and dehydrogenation of H18-DBT is carried out at the same elevated temperature between 290 and 310 °C with hydrogen pressure being the only variable for shifting the equilibrium between hydrogen loading and release. We demonstrate that the heat of hydrogenation can be provided at a temperature level suitable for effective dehydrogenation catalysis. Combined with a heat storage device of appropriate capacity or a high pressure steam system this heat could be used for dehydrogenation.
A Panoramic Analysis of Hydrogen Utilization Systems Using an Input-output Table for Next Generation Energy Systems

The objective of this study is to analyze a government proposal from a panoramic perspective concerning the economic and environmental effects associated with the construction and operation of hydrogen utilization systems by the year 2030. We focused on a marine transport system for hydrogen produced offshore hydrogen gas turbine power generation fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and hydrogen stations as well as residential fuel cell systems (RFCs). In this study using an Input-Output Table for Next Generation Energy Systems (IONGES) we evaluated the induced output labor and CO2 emissions from the construction and operation of these hydrogen technologies using a uniform approach. This may be helpful when considering future designs for the Japanese energy system. In terms of per 1 t-H2 of hydrogen use CO2 reductions from the use of FCVs are considerably higher than the additional CO2 emissions from foreign production and transportation of hydrogen. Because new construction of a hydrogen pipeline network is not considered to be realistic RFCs is assumed to consume hydrogen generated by refining town gas. In this case the CO2 reductions from using RFCs will decline under the electricity composition estimated for 2030 on the condition of a substantial expansion of electricity generation from renewable energy sources. However under the present composition of electricity production we can expect a certain amount of CO2 reductions from using RFCs. If hydrogen is directly supplied to RFCs CO2 reductions increase substantially. Thus we can reduce a significant amount of CO2 emissions if various unused energy sources dispersed around local areas or unharnessed renewable energies such as solar and wind power can be converted into hydrogen to be supplied to FCVs and RFCs.
Hydrogen Storage Behavior of Nanocrystalline and Amorphous Mg–Ni–Cu–La Alloys

Alloying and structural modification are two effective ways to enhance the hydrogen storage kinetics and decrease the thermal stability of Mg and Mg-based alloys. In order to enhance the characteristics of Mg2Ni-type alloys Cu and La were added to an Mg2Ni-type alloy and the sample alloys (Mg24Ni10Cu2)100−xLax (x = 0 5 10 15 20) were prepared by melt spinning. The influences of La content and spinning rate on the gaseous and electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of the sample alloys were explored in detail. The structural identification carried out by XRD and TEM indicates that the main phase of the alloys is Mg2Ni and the addition of La results in the formation of the secondary phases LaMg3 and La2Mg17. The as-spun alloys have amorphous and nanocrystalline structures and the addition of La promotes glass formation. The electrochemical properties examined by an automatic galvanostatic system show that the samples possess a good activation capability and achieve their maximal discharge capacities within three cycles. The discharge potential characteristics were vastly ameliorated by melt spinning and La addition. The discharge capacities of the samples achieve their maximal values as the La content changes and the discharge capacities always increase with increasing spinning rate. The addition of La leads to a decline in hydrogen absorption capacity but it can effectively enhance the rate of hydrogen absorption. The addition of La and melt spinning significantly increase the hydrogen desorption rate due to the reduced activation energy.
A Fully Renewable and Efficient Backup Power System with a Hydrogen-biodiesel-fueled IC Engine

Renewable energy is free abundant clean and could contribute towards a significant reduction of the global warming emissions. It is massively introduced as a source of electricity production across the globe and is expected to become the primary source of energy within the following decades. However despite the naturally replenished energy the supply is not always available. For this reason it is necessary at times of excess energy any surplus quantity to be sufficiently captured stored and later used when a deficit occurs. In this paper an overview of a backup power system operating with a hydrogen-biodiesel dual-fuel internal combustion engine is provided. The system is utilizing the organic chemical hydride method for safe hydrogen storage and transportation. The high energy content of hydrogen stored in the form of an organic hydride under ambient conditions makes it an ideal energy backup medium for large-scale and long-term applications. The research work focusses on the operation and emissions output of the dual-fuel internal combustion engine running on fully renewable fuels and the results are compared with the conventional petroleum-derived diesel engine. Biodiesel-hydrogen operation shows significant benefits in the reduction of carbon and soot emissions but deteriorates the NOx formation compared to the conventional diesel-powered engines. The operation of the engine at high loads can provide high exhaust thermal energy while alternative combustion strategies are necessary to be implemented at low load conditions for the optimum operation of the backup power system.
Critical Assessment of the Effect of Atmospheric Corrosion Induced Hydrogen on Mechanical Properties of Advanced High Strength Steel

Hydrogen absorption into steel during atmospheric corrosion has been of a strong concern during last decades. It is technically important to investigate if hydrogen absorbed under atmospheric exposure conditions can significantly affect mechanical properties of steels. The present work studies changes of mechanical properties of dual phase (DP) advanced high strength steel specimens with sodium chloride deposits during corrosion in humid air using Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT). Additional annealed specimens were used as reference in order to separate the possible effect of absorbed hydrogen from that of corrosion deterioration. Hydrogen entry was monitored in parallel experiments using hydrogen electric resistance sensor (HERS) and thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS). SSRT results showed a drop in elongation and tensile strength by 42% and 6% respectively in 27 days of atmospheric exposure. However this decrease cannot be attributed to the effect of absorbed hydrogen despite the increase in hydrogen content with time of exposure. Cross-cut analysis revealed considerable pitting which was suggested to be the main reason for the degradation of mechanical properties
Recent Advances on the Thermal Destabilization of Mg-based Hydrogen Storage Materials

Magnesium hydride and its compounds have a high hydrogen storage capacity and are inexpensive and thus have been considered as one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials for on-board applications. Nevertheless Mg/MgH2 systems suffer from great drawbacks in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics for hydrogen uptake/release. Over the past decades although significant progress has been achieved with respect to hydrogen sorption kinetics in Mg/MgH2 systems their high thermal stability remains the main drawback which hinders their practical applications. Accordingly herein we present a brief summary of the synthetic routes and a comprehensive overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the promising strategies to effectively tune the thermodynamics of Mg-based materials such as alloying nanostructuring metastable phase formation changing reaction pathway and nano Mg-based composites. Among them nanostructuring and metastable phase formation which have the superiority of changing the thermodynamics without affecting the hydrogen capacity have attracted increasing interest in this field. To further optimize the hydrogen storage performance we specially emphasize novel nanostructured materials which have the advantage of combining alloy engineering nanostructuring and the synergistic effect to change the thermodynamics of Mg/MgH2 to some extent. Furthermore the remaining challenges and the directions of further research on MgH2 including the fundamental mechanism of the Mg–H bond instability advanced synthetic routes stabilizing nanostructures and predicting novel composite materials are proposed.
Hydrogen Permeation Under High Pressure Conditions and the Destruction of Exposed Polyethylene-property of Polymeric Materials for High-pressure Hydrogen Devices (2)-

Aiming to elucidate physical property affecting to hydrogen gas permeability of polymer materials used for liner materials of storage tanks or hoses and sealants under high-pressure environment as model materials with different free volume fraction five types of polyethylene were evaluated using two methods. A convenient non-steady state measurement of thermal desorption analysis (TDA) and steady-state high-pressure hydrogen gas permeation test (HPHP) were used both under up to 90 MPa of practical pressure. The limit of TDA method of evaluation for the specimens suffering fracture during decompression process after hydrogen exposure was found. Permeability coefficient decreased with the decrease of diffusion coefficient under higher pressure condition. Specific volume and degree of crystallinity under hydrostatic environment were measured. The results showed that the shrinkage in free volume caused by hydrostatic effects of the applied hydrogen gas pressure decreases diffusion coefficient resulting in the decrease of permeability coefficient with the pressure rise.
Comparing Exergy Losses and Evaluating the Potential of Catalyst-filled Plate-fin and Spiral-wound Heat Exchangers in a Large-scale Claude Hydrogen Liquefaction Process

Detailed heat exchanger designs are determined by matching intermediate temperatures in a large-scale Claude refrigeration process for liquefaction of hydrogen with a capacity of 125 tons/day. A comparison is made of catalyst filled plate-fin and spiral-wound heat exchangers by use of a flexible and robust modelling framework for multi-stream heat exchangers that incorporates conversion of ortho-to para-hydrogen in the hydrogen feed stream accurate thermophysical models and a distributed resolution of all streams and wall temperatures. Maps of the local exergy destruction in the heat exchangers are presented which enable the identification of several avenues to improve their performances.<br/>The heat exchanger duties vary between 1 and 31 MW and their second law energy efficiencies vary between 72.3% and 96.6%. Due to geometrical constraints imposed by the heat exchanger manufacturers it is necessary to employ between one to four parallel plate-fin heat exchanger modules while it is possible to use single modules in series for the spiral-wound heat exchangers. Due to the lower surface density and heat transfer coefficients in the spiral-wound heat exchangers their weights are 2–14 times higher than those of the plate-fin heat exchangers.<br/>In the first heat exchanger hydrogen feed gas is cooled from ambient temperature to about 120 K by use of a single mixed refrigerant cycle. Here most of the exergy destruction occurs when the high-pressure mixed refrigerant enters the single-phase regime. A dual mixed refrigerant or a cascade process holds the potential to remove a large part of this exergy destruction and improve the efficiency. In many of the heat exchangers uneven local exergy destruction reveals a potential for further optimization of geometrical parameters in combination with process parameters and constraints.<br/>The framework presented makes it possible to compare different sources of exergy destruction on equal terms and enables a qualified specification on the maximum allowed pressure drops in the streams. The mole fraction of para-hydrogen is significantly closer to the equilibrium composition through the entire process for the spiral-wound heat exchangers due to the longer residence time. This reduces the exergy destruction from the conversion of ortho-hydrogen and results in a higher outlet mole fraction of para-hydrogen from the process.<br/>Because of the higher surface densities of the plate-fin heat exchangers they are the preferred technology for hydrogen liquefaction unless a higher conversion to heat exchange ratio is desired.
Synthesis of Spherical V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W High-Entropy Alloy Powder Using Hydrogen Embrittlement and Spheroidization by Thermal Plasma

V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W high-entropy alloy (HEA) one of the refractory HEAs is considered as a next-generation structural material for ultra-high temperature uses. Refractory HEAs have low castability and machinability due to their high melting temperature and low thermal conductivity. Thus powder metallurgy becomes a promising method for fabricating components with refractory HEAs. Therefore in this study we fabricated spherical V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W HEA powder using hydrogen embrittlement and spheroidization by thermal plasma. The HEA ingot was prepared by vacuum arc melting and revealed to have a single body-centered cubic phase. Hydrogen embrittlement which could be achieved by annealing in a hydrogen atmosphere was introduced to get the ingot pulverized easily to a fine powder having an angular shape. Then the powder was annealed in a vacuum atmosphere to eliminate the hydrogen from the hydrogenated HEA resulting in a decrease in the hydrogen concentration from 0.1033 wt% to 0.0003 wt%. The angular shape of the HEA powder was turned into a spherical one by inductively-coupled thermal plasma allowing to fabricate spherical V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W HEA powder with a d50 value of 28.0 μm.
Hydrogen Effects in Non-ferrous Alloys: Discussion

This is a transcript of the discussion session on the effects of hydrogen in the non-ferrous alloys of zirconium and titanium which are anisotropic hydride-forming metals. The four talks focus on the hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms that affect zirconium and titanium components which are respectively used in the nuclear and aerospace industries. Two specific mechanisms are delayed hydride cracking and stress corrosion cracking.

Paving the Way to the Fuel of the Future—Nanostructured Complex Hydrides

Hydrides have emerged as strong candidates for energy storage applications and their study has attracted wide interest in both the academic and industry sectors. With clear advantages due to the solid-state storage of hydrogen hydrides and in particular complex hydrides have the ability to tackle environmental pollution by offering the alternative of a clean energy source: hydrogen. However several drawbacks have detracted this material from going mainstream and some of these shortcomings have been addressed by nanostructuring/nanoconfinement strategies. With the enhancement of thermodynamic and/or kinetic behavior nanosized complex hydrides (borohydrides and alanates) have recently conquered new estate in the hydrogen storage field. The current review aims to present the most recent results many of which illustrate the feasibility of using complex hydrides for the generation of molecular hydrogen in conditions suitable for vehicular and stationary applications. Nanostructuring strategies either in the pristine or nanoconfined state coupled with a proper catalyst and the choice of host material can potentially yield a robust nanocomposite to reliably produce H2 in a reversible manner. The key element to tackle for current and future research efforts remains the reproducible means to store H2 which will build up towards a viable hydrogen economy goal. The most recent trends and future prospects will be presented herein.
Efficient Hydrogen Storage in Defective Graphene and its Mechanical Stability: A Combined Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

A combined density functional theory and molecular dynamics approach is employed to study modifications of graphene at atomistic level for better H2 storage. The study reveals H2 desorption from hydrogenated defective graphene structure V222 to be exothermic. H2 adsorption and desorption processes are found to be more reversible for V222 as compared to pristine graphene. Our study shows that V222 undergoes brittle fracture under tensile loading similar to the case of pristine graphene. The tensile strength of V222 shows slight reduction with respect to their pristine counterpart which is attributed to the transition of sp2 to sp3-like hybridization. The study also shows that the V222 structure is mechanically more stable than the defective graphene structure without chemically adsorbed hydrogen atoms. The current fundamental study thus reveals the efficient recovery mechanism of adsorbed hydrogen from V222 and paves the way for the engineering of structural defects in graphene for H2 storage.
Alloy Optimization for Reducing Delayed Fracture Sensitivity of 2000 MPa Press Hardening Steel

Press hardening steel (PHS) is widely applied in current automotive body design. The trend of using PHS grades with strengths above 1500 MPa raises concerns about sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement. This study investigates the hydrogen delayed fracture sensitivity of steel alloy 32MnB5 with a 2000 MPa tensile strength and that of several alloy variants involving molybdenum and niobium. It is shown that the delayed cracking resistance can be largely enhanced by using a combination of these alloying elements. The observed improvement appears to mainly originate from the obstruction of hydrogen-induced damage incubation mechanisms by the solutes as well as the precipitates of these alloying elements.
Cohesive Zone Modelling of Hydrogen Assisted Fatigue Crack Growth: The Role of Trapping

We investigate the influence of microstructural traps in hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth. To this end a new formulation combining multi-trap stress-assisted diffusion mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity and a hydrogen- and fatigue-dependent cohesive zone model is presented and numerically implemented. The results show that the ratio of loading frequency to effective diffusivity governs fatigue crack growth behaviour. Increasing the density of beneficial traps not involved in the fracture process results in lower fatigue crack growth rates. The combinations of loading frequency and carbide trap densities that minimise embrittlement susceptibility are identified providing the foundation for a rational design of hydrogen-resistant alloys.
The Microstructure Study of the Hydrogenated Titanium Specimens Tested at High Temperature Creep for Long-term Tensile Strength

Experimental tests of flat titanium samples at a temperature of 450 °C stretched with a constant force up to destruction were carried out. Titanium samples were hydrogenated in the Moscow Aviation Institute laboratory to a hydrogen content of 0.1 % 0.3 % and 0.6 % by weight of the specimen and then tested in the laboratory of Lomonosov Moscow State University. From the experiments the time to failure the localization time of the deformations and the stress distribution along the longitudinal coordinate of the sample over time were obtained. A metallographic study was conducted and the phase composition was investigated in Moscow Aviation Institute. The effect of hydrogen on long-term strength mechanical characteristics and phase composition has been elucidated.
Notch-induced Anisotropic Fracture of Cold Drawn Pearlitic Steels and the Associated Crack Path Deflection and Mixed-mode Stress State: A Tribute to Masaccio

This paper deals with notch-induced anisotropic fracture behavior of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels on the basis of their microstructural evolution during manufacturing by multi-step cold drawing that produces slenderizing and orientation of the pearlitic colonies together with densification and orientation of the Fe/Fe3C lamellae reviewing previous research by the author. Results of fracture test using notched specimens of cold drawn pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing (distinct levels of strain hardening) in air and hydrogen environment shows: (i) the key impact of the colonies and lamellae alignment and orientation on notch-induced fracture producing anisotropic fracture behavior with its related crack path deflection (or fracture path deviation); (ii) the necessity of both stress triaxiality (constraint) and microstructural orientation (colonies/lamellae) alignment to produce fracture path deflection; (iii) hydrogen presence (the circumstance) promotes crack path deviation in addition to the inherent microstructural anisotropy created by cold drawing; (iv) the anisotropic fracture path with a stepped profile in cold drawn pearlitic steel consisting of deflections and deviations from the initial transverse fracture path in mode I resembles Masaccio’s Tribute Money painting with its mountains at the background so that the present paper can be considered as a Tribute to Masaccio.
Interface Instabilities of Growing Hydrides

Formation of metal hydrides is a serious complication that occur when hydride forming metals such as zirconium niobium vanadium and magnesium are exposed to long term hydrogen environment. The main concern is that the hydride as being a brittle material has very poor fracture mechanical properties. Formation of hydride is associated with transportation of hydrogen along the gradients of increasing hydrostatic stress which leads to crack tips and other stress concentrators where it forms the hydride. In the present study the thermodynamics of the evolving hydrides is studied. The process is driven by the release of free strain chemical and gradient energies. A phase field model is used to capture the driving forces that the release of the free energy causes. The study gives the conditions that lead to hydride advancement versus retreat and under which conditions the metal-hydride interface becomes unstable and develops a waviness. The spatial frequency spectrum leading to instability is found to depend on the ratio of the elastic strain energy density and parameters related to the interface energy.
Recent Progress Using Solid-State Materials for Hydrogen Storage: A Short Review

With the rapid growth in demand for effective and renewable energy the hydrogen era has begun. To meet commercial requirements efficient hydrogen storage techniques are required. So far four techniques have been suggested for hydrogen storage: compressed storage hydrogen liquefaction chemical absorption and physical adsorption. Currently high-pressure compressed tanks are used in the industry; however certain limitations such as high costs safety concerns undesirable amounts of occupied space and low storage capacities are still challenges. Physical hydrogen adsorption is one of the most promising techniques; it uses porous adsorbents which have material benefits such as low costs high storage densities and fast charging–discharging kinetics. During adsorption on material surfaces hydrogen molecules weakly adsorb at the surface of adsorbents via long-range dispersion forces. The largest challenge in the hydrogen era is the development of progressive materials for efficient hydrogen storage. In designing efficient adsorbents understanding interfacial interactions between hydrogen molecules and porous material surfaces is important. In this review we briefly summarize a hydrogen storage technique based on US DOE classifications and examine hydrogen storage targets for feasible commercialization. We also address recent trends in the development of hydrogen storage materials. Lastly we propose spillover mechanisms for efficient hydrogen storage using solid-state adsorbents.
The Effect of Heat Treatments on the Constituent Materials of a Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel in Hydrogen Environment

A nuclear reactor pressure vessel (NRPV) wall is formed by two layer of different materials: an inner layer of stainless steel (cladding material) and an outer layer of low carbon steel (base material) which is highly susceptible to corrosion related phenomena. A reduction of the mechanical properties of both materials forming the wall would appear due to the action of the harsh environment causing hydrogen embrittlement (HE) related phenomena. As a result of the manufacturing process residual stresses and strains appear in the NRPV wall thereby influencing the main stage in HE: hydrogen diffusion. A common engineering practice for reducing such states is to apply a tempering heat treatment. In this paper a numerical analysis is carried out for revealing the influence of the heat treatment parameters (tempering temperature and tempering time) on the HE of a commonly used NRPV. To achieve this goal a numerical model of hydrogen diffusion assisted by stress and strain was used considering diverse residual stress-strain states after tempering. This way the obtained hydrogen accumulation during operation time of the NRPV provides insight into the better tempering conditions from the structural integrity point of view.
Peculiarities of Bond Strength Degradation in Reinforced Concrete Induced by Accelerated Electrochemical Methods

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures are long-term operated objects with service life of 50–100 years. During their operation they subject to continuous ambient effects (cyclic temperature changes acid rains de-icing salts) and service loads (e.g. traffic) which effect on structural integrity of the composite and lead to worsening of structures serviceability. One of the reasons for strength loss of RC members is bond degradation between rebar and concrete. It could be caused by two different factors: overprotection of RC and reinforcement corrosion. These effects were simulated in the laboratory conditions by the electrochemical methods applying of impressed cathodic current and accelerated corrosion tests respectively. It was shown that applied anode polarization causes not only concrete cracking due to internal pressure of corrosion products at the interface but also due to their expansion far from rebar for a distance comparative with a specimen thickness evidently into preliminary formed cracks. Since intensive corrosion of steel reinforcement decreases its diameter and corrosion products can migrate from the rebar surface into a depth of concrete these factors could weaken bond in RC installations up to a total loss of cohesion between rebar and concrete. The influence of cathodic polarization of steel embedded in concrete is commonly seemed to consist in its possible hydrogen embrittlement and ions redistribution in concrete matrix. In this paper the effect of hydrogen recombined at the rebar–concrete interface on bond weakening and concrete cracking is considered.
Corrosion Mechanisms of High-Mn Twinning-Induced Plasticity (TWIP) Steels: A Critical Review

Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels have higher strength and ductility than conventional steels. Deformation mechanisms producing twins that prevent gliding and stacking of dislocations cause a higher ductility than that of steel grades with the same strength. TWIP steels are considered to be within the new generation of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). However some aspects such as the corrosion resistance and performance in service of TWIP steel materials need more research. Application of TWIP steels in the automotive industry requires a proper investigation of corrosion behavior and corrosion mechanisms which would indicate the optimum degree of protection and the possible decrease in costs. In general Fe−Mn-based TWIP steel alloys can passivate in oxidizing acid neutral and basic solutions however they cannot passivate in reducing acid or active chloride solutions. TWIP steels have become as a potential material of interest for automotive applications due to their effectiveness impact resistance and negligible harm to the environment. The mechanical and corrosion performance of TWIP steels is subjected to the manufacturing and processing steps like forging and casting elemental composition and thermo-mechanical treatment. Corrosion of TWIP steels caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors has posed a serious problem for their use. Passivity breakdown caused by pitting and galvanic corrosion due to phase segregation are widely described and their critical mechanisms examined. Numerous studies have been performed to study corrosion behaviour and passivation of TWIP steel. Despite the large number of articles on corrosion few comprehensive reports have been published on this topic. The current trend for development of corrosion resistance TWIP steel is thoroughly studied and represented showing the key mechanisms and factors influencing corrosion processes and its consequences on TWIP steel. In addition suggestions for future works and gaps in the literature are considered.
Feature of Stress Corrosion Cracking of Degraded Gas Pipeline Steels

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of steels can reduce the structural integrity of gas pipelines. To simulate in-service degradation of pipeline steels in laboratory the method of accelerated degradation consisted in subjecting specimens to electrolytic hydrogenation to loading up the certain plastic deformation and heating of specimen at 250°C was recently developed. The purpose of this paper was to analyse mechanical and SCC behaviour of in-service and in-laboratory degraded gas pipeline steels and to reveal some fractographic features of SCC. Three pipeline steels of the different strength (17H1S which is equivalent of API X52 API X60 and API X70) were investigated. The characteristics of the as-received pipeline steels with different strength were compared with the properties of pipeline steels after in-service and in-laboratory degradation. An influence of the NS4 solution on SCC resistance of 17H1S and API X60 steels in the as-received state and after the accelerated degradation using slow strain rate tension method was analysed. The noticeable decrease of plasticity for 17H1S and API X60 steels after long-term operation was shown. Deep microdelaminations revealed in the central part of fracture surfaces for the operated steels can be considered as the signs of dissipated damaging in the metal caused by texture and hydrogen absorbed by metal. Comparison of the SCC tests results showed that the characteristics of both steels in the as-received state were insignificantly changed under the influence of the environment. At the same time the degraded steels were characterized by a high sensitivity to SCC. It was shown fractographically that it associated with cracking along interfaces of ferrite and pearlite grains with secondary deep intergranular cracks formation and also by delamination between ferrite and cementite inside pearlite grains. The similar fracture mechanism at SCC tests was revealed for near the outer surface of the specimens and in the central part of the fracture surfaces of in-laboratory degraded specimens. These results demonstrated the key role of hydrogen during SCC and in-bulk cracking as well.
Recent Research Progress in Hybrid Photovoltaic–Regenerative Hydrogen Fuel Cell Microgrid Systems

Hybrid photovoltaic–regenerative hydrogen fuel cell (PV-RHFC) microgrid systems are considered to have a high future potential in the effort to increase the renewable energy share in the form of solar PV technology with hydrogen generation storage and reutilization. The current study provides a comprehensive review of the recent research progress of hybrid PV-RHFC microgrid systems to extract conclusions on their characteristics and future prospects. The different components that can be integrated (PV modules electrolyzer and fuel cell stacks energy storage units power electronics and controllers) are analyzed in terms of available technology options. The main modeling and optimization methods and control strategies are discussed. Additionally various application options are provided which differentiate in terms of scale purpose and further integration with other power generating and energy storage technologies. Finally critical analysis and discussion of hybrid PV-RHFC microgrid systems were conducted based on their current status. Overall the commercialization of hybrid PV-RHFC microgrid systems requires a significant drop in the RHFC subsystem capital cost. In addition it will be necessary to produce complete hybrid PV-RHFC microgrid systems with integrated energy management control capabilities to avoid operational issues and ensure flexibility and reliability of the energy flow in relation to supply storage and demand.
Proposal and Verification of Novel Fatigue Crack Propagation Simulation Method by Finite Element Method.

In this paper we propose and verify a novel method to simulate crack propagation without propagating a crack by finite element method. We propose this method for elastoplastic analysis coupled with convection-diffusion. In the previous study we succeeded in performing elastoplastic analysis coupled with convection-diffusion of hydrogen for a material with a crack under tensile loading. This research extends the successful method to fatigue crack propagation. In convection-diffusion analysis in order to simulate the invasion and release of elements through the free surface the crack tip is expressed by using a notch with a sufficiently small radius. Therefore the node release method conventionally used to simulate crack propagation cannot be applied. Hence instead of crack propagation based on an analytical model we propose a novel method that can reproduce the influence of the vicinity of the crack tip on a crack. We moved the stress field near the crack tip in the direction opposite to that of crack propagation by an amount corresponding to the crack propagation length. When we extend the previous method to fatigue crack propagation simulation we must consider the difference in strain due to loading and unloading. This problem was solved by considering the strain due to loading as a displacement. Instead of moving the strain due to loading we moved the displacement. First we performed a simple tensile load analysis on the model and output the displacement of all the nodes of the model at maximum load. Then the displacement was moved in the direction opposite to that of crack propagation. Finally the stress field was reproduced by forcibly moving all the nodes by the displacement amount. The strain due to unloading was reproduced by removing the displacement. Furthermore we verified the equivalence of the crack propagation simulation and the proposed method.
Atomistic Modelling of Light-element Co-segregation at Structural Defects in Iron

Studying the behaviour of hydrogen in the vicinity of extended defects such as grain boundaries dislocations nanovoids and phase boundaries is critical in understanding the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement. A key complication in this context is the interplay between hydrogen and other segregating elements. Modelling the competition of H with other light elements requires an efficient description of the interactions of compositionally complex systems with the system sizes needed to appropriately describe extended defects often precluding the use of direct ab initio approaches. In this regard we have developed novel electronic structure approaches to understand the energetics and mutual interactions of light elements at representative structural features in high-strength ferritic steels. Using this approach we examine the co-segregation of hydrogen with carbon at chosen grain boundaries in α-iron. We find that the strain introduced by segregated carbon atoms at tilt grain boundaries increases the solubility of hydrogen close to the boundary plane giving a higher H concentration in the vicinity of the boundary than in a carbon-free case. Via simulated tensile tests we find that the simultaneous presence of carbon and hydrogen at grain boundaries leads to a significant decrease in the elongation to fracture compared with the carbon-free case.
Toward a Non-destructive Diagnostic Analysis Tool of Exercises Pipelines: Models and Experiences

Strategic networks of hydrocarbon pipelines in long time service are adversely affected by the action of aggressive chemicals transported with the fluids and dissolved in the environment. Material degradation phenomena are amplified in the presence of hydrogen and water elements that increase the material brittleness and reduce the safety margins. The risk of failure during operation of these infrastructures can be reduced if not prevented by the continuous monitoring of the integrity of the pipe surfaces and by the tracking of the relevant bulk properties. A fast and potentially non-destructive diagnostic tool of material degradation which may be exploited in this context is based on the instrumented indentation tests that can be performed on metals at different scales. Preliminary validation studies of the significance of this methodology for the assessment of pipeline integrity have been carried out with the aid of interpretation models of the experiments. The main results of this ongoing activity are illustrated in this contribution.
Electrochemical Fracture Analysis of In-service Natural Gas Pipeline Steels

Long-term operation of natural gas transit pipelines implies aging hydrogen-induced and stress corrosion cracking and it causes hydrogen embrittlement of steels degradation of mechanical properties associated to a safe serviceability of pipelines and failure risk increase. The implementation of effective diagnostic measures of pipelines steels degradation would allow planning actions in order to reduce a risk of fracture. In this paper a new scientific and methodical approach based on the electrochemical analysis of fracture surface for evaluation of in-service degradation of operated pipeline steels was developed. It was suggested that carbon diffusion to grain boundaries and to defects inside grains intensified by hydrogen under long-term operation led to formation of nanoparticles of carbides which resulted in intergranular cracking of operated pipeline steels under service and their transgranular cracking under impact toughness testing. Therefore fracture surface was enriched by carbon compounds and electrochemical characteristics were sensitive to this. In-service degradation of ferrite-pearlite pipeline steels was accompanied by a sharp shift in open-circuit potential of the fracture surface (brittle fracture) of specimens after impact toughness tests compared with that of polished steel surfaces. A significant difference between potentials of the fracture surface and the polished steel surface (over 60 mV in 0.3% NaCl solution) of specimens made of ferrite-pearlite pipeline steels observed after their long-term operation was evidently due to the increased content of carbon compounds on the fracture surface. Mechanism of ferrite-pearlite pipeline steels embrittlement under operation consisted in carbides enrichment not only grain boundaries but also intragranular defects has been revealed as it is indicated by an increase of carbon content on transgranular fracture surfaces determined electrochemically.
Fatigue Crack Growth in Operated Gas Pipeline Steels

Regularities of fatigue crack growth for pipeline steels of different strength are presented and the changes in fatigue behavior of these steels after long term operation are analyzed. Threshold values of stress intensity factor range are lower for operated steels comparing to the corresponding values for as received ones. During the testing in the simulated soil solution NS4 a barely noticeable tendency to increase the threshold values of SIF was traced. It was explained by the appearance of intergranular fracture elements on the backgrownd of the typical flat fatigue relief already in the near-threshold region of fatigue crack growth curves in the soil solution. A higher relief of intergranular facets provided favorable conditions for occurrence of crack closure effect.<br/>Fatigue testing was performed using steel specimens after in-laboratory and in-service degradation and it was shown that results for both degraded steels are very close to each other proving the validity of the method of in-laboratory degradation. A new methodic approach to fatigue testing of pipe steels is presented which allows simulating working conditions of gas pipelines namely the hydrogen diffusion through the pipe wall to its external surface and estimating its possible effect on SCC. It consists in evaluation of the influence of hydrogen reached the crack tip only due to its diffusion on the crack growth. It is found that hydrogen absorbed by metal during the test providing such conditions causes a leap of crack growth rate in the Paris region of the fatigue crack growth curve of the tested 17H1S steel. Intergranular mechanism of fracture detected on the specimen fracture surface is suggested as a clear evidence of embrittlement of grain boundaries as a result of its hydrogenation.
Calibrating a Ductile Damage Model for Two Pipeline Steels: Method and Challenges

This work is part of a project that aims to develop a micromechanics based damage law taking into account hydrogen assisted degradation. A 'vintage' API 5L X56N and a 'modern' API 5L X70M pipeline steel have been selected for this purpose. The paper focuses on an experimental calibration of ductile damage properties of the well known complete Gurson model for the two steels in absence of hydrogen. A basic microstructural characterization is provided showing a banded ferrite-pearlite microstructure for both steels. Charpy impact tests showed splits at the fracture surface for the X70 steel. Double-notched round bar tensile tests are performed aiming to provide the appropriate input for damage model calibration. The double-notched nature of the specimens allows to examine the material state at maximum load in the unfailed notch and the final material state in the failed notch. Different notch radii are used capturing a broad range of positive stress triaxialities. The notches are optically monitored for transverse necking in two perpendicular directions (transverse to rolling and through thickness) to reveal any anisotropy in plastic deformation and/or damage. It is explained how the occurrence of splits at the segregation zone and anisotropy complicate the calibration procedure. Calibration is done for each steel and acceptable results are obtained. However the occurrence of splits did not allow to evaluate the damage model for the highest levels of tested stress triaxiality.

Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of Prestressing Steel Wires: The Role of the Cold-drawing Conditions

Prestressing steel wires are highly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Residual stress-strain state produced after wire drawing plays an essential role since hydrogen damage at certain places of the material is directly affected by stress and strain fields. Changes in wire drawing conditions modify the stress and strain fields and consequently the HE susceptibility and life in service of these structural components in the presence of a hydrogenating environment. This paper analyzes the distributions of residual stress and plastic strain obtained after diverse drawing conditions (inlet die angle die bearing length varying die angle and straining path) and their influence on HE susceptibility of the wires. The conditions for industrial cold drawing can thus be optimized thereby producing commercial prestressing steel wires with improved performance against HE phenomena.
Hydrogen Induced Damage in Heavily Cold-Drawn Wires of Lean Duplex Stainless Steel

The paper addresses the sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement of heavily cold-drawn wires made of the new generation of lower alloyed duplex stainless steels often referred to as lean duplex grades. It includes comparisons with similar data corresponding to cold-drawn eutectoid and duplex stainless steels. For this purpose fracture tests under constant load were carried out with wires in the as-received condition and fatigue-precracked in air and exposed to ammonium thiocyanate solution. Microstructure and fractographic observations were essential means for the cracking analysis. The effect of hydrogen-assisted embrittlement on the damage tolerance of lean duplex steels was assessed regarding two macro-mechanical damage models that provide the upper bounds of damage tolerance and accurately approximate the failure behavior of the eutectoid and duplex stainless steels wires.
Investigation of Structure of AlN Thin Films Using Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy

This study focuses on structural imperfections caused by hydrogen impurities in AlN thin films obtained using atomic layer deposition method (ALD). Currently there is a severe lack of studies regarding the presence of hydrogen in the bulk of AlN films. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is one of the few methods that allow detection bonds of light elements in particular - hydrogen. Hydrogen is known to be a frequent contaminant in AlN films grown by ALD method it may form different bonds with nitrogen e.g. amino (–NH2) or imide (–NH) groups which impair the quality of the resulting film. Which is why it is important to investigate the phenomenon of hydrogen as well as to search for the suitable methods to eliminate or at least reduce its quantity. In this work several samples have been prepared using different precursors substrates and deposition parameters and characterized using FTIR and additional techniques such as AFM XPS and EDS to provide a comparative and comprehensive analysis of topography morphology and chemical composition of AlN thin films.
Energetics of LOHC: Structure-Property Relationships from Network of Thermochemical Experiments and in Silico Methods

The storage of hydrogen is the key technology for a sustainable future. We developed an in silico procedure which is based on the combination of experimental and quantum-chemical methods. This method was used to evaluate energetic parameters for hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions of various pyrazine derivatives as a seminal liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) that are involved in the hydrogen storage technologies. With this in silico tool the tempo of the reliable search for suitable LOHC candidates will accelerate dramatically leading to the design and development of efficient materials for various niche applications.
Evaluation of the Performance Degradation of a Metal Hydride Tank in a Real Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

In a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powered by a metal hydride tank the performance of the tank is an indicator of the overall health status which is used to predict its behaviour and make appropriate energy management decisions. The aim of this paper is to investigate how to evaluate the effects of charge/discharge cycles on the performance of a commercial automotive metal hydride hydrogen storage system applied to a real FCEV. For this purpose a mathematical model is proposed based on uncertain physical parameters that are identified using the stochastic particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm combined with experimental measurements. The variation of these parameters allows an assessment of the degradation level of the tank’s performance on both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Simulated results derived from the proposed model and experimental measurements were in good agreement with a maximum relative error of less than 2%. The validated model was used to establish the correlations between the observed degradations in a hydride tank recovered from a real FCEV. The results obtained show that it is possible to predict tank degradations by developing laws of variation of these parameters as a function of the real conditions of the use of the FCEV (number of charging/discharging cycles pressures mass flow rates temperatures).
Investigation of Certain Mechanical and Magnetic Properties of a Stressed Low-carbon steel after corrosion in NaCl-water solution

Atomic hydrogen produced by corrosion of a low-carbon steel in NaCl – Water solution may markedly affect its certain tensile mechanical and magnetic properties in a complex and peculiar manner. This influence was investigated by employing the intrinsic micromagnetic emission (ME)-response as well as tensile mechanical response of this ferromagnetic material and also by introduction a relevant measurement parameter of specific micromagnetic emission response. In this fashion it was shown that an increase in the hydrogen accumulation with corrosion time leads to an associated increase in the pervasive and embrittling influence expressed by a marked loss in ductility of the material. It was also shown that the competitive interplay of cumulative hydrogen applied stress and plastic strain-induced microstructural damage was related to a specific ME-response parameter by which an increased magnetic hardening tendency of material with corrosion time was established. In general embrittlement and magnetic hardening are parallel products of stress- assisted hydrogen accumulation where magnetic hardening process seems to be in a time processing advance of embrittlement one. The above findings allow to estimate that the magnetic properties are more susceptible to hydrogen effects than the mechanical ones.
Phase Field Modelling of Formation and Fracture of Expanding Precipitates

It is a common belief that embedded expanding inclusions are subjected to an internal homogeneous compressive hydrostatic stress. Still cracks that appear in precipitates that occupy a larger volume than the original material are frequently observed. The appearance of cracks has since long been regarded as a paradox. In the present study it is shown that matrix materials that increases its volume even several percent during the precipitation process develop a tensile hydrostatic stress in the centre of the precipitate. This is the result of a complicated mechanical-chemical phase transformation process. The process is here studied using a Landau phase feld model. Before the material is transformed and incorporated in a precipitate it undergoes stretching beyond the elastic strain limit because of the presence of already expanded material. During the phase transformation the accompanying volumetric expansion cannot be fully accommodated which instead creates an internal compressive stress and adds tension in the surrounding material. As the growth of the precipitate proceeds a region with increasing tensile stress develops in the interior of the precipitate. This is suggested to be the most probable cause of the observed cracks. First the mechanics that lead to the tension is computed. The infuence of elastic-plastic properties is studied both for cases both with and without cracks. The growth history from microscopic to macroscopic precipitates is followed and the result is compared with observations of so called hydride blisters that are formed on surfaces of zirconium alloys in the presence of hydrogen. A common practical situation is when the zirconium is in contact with an object of lower temperature. Then the cooled spot attracts hydrogen that make the zirconium transform to a metal hydride with the shape of a blister. The simulations predicts a final size and position of the growing crack that compares well with the experimental observations.

Hydrogen energy with environment amicable renewable efficiency and cost-effective advantages is the future mainstream substitution of fossil-based fuel. However the extremely low volumetric density gives rise to the main challenge in hydrogen storage and therefore exploring effective storage techniques is key hurdles that need to be crossed to accomplish the sustainable hydrogen economy. Hydrogen physically or chemically stored into nanomaterials in the solid-state is a desirable prospect for effective large-scale hydrogen storage which has exhibited great potentials for applications in both reversible onboard storage and regenerable off-board storage applications. Its attractive points include safe compact light reversibility and efficiently produce sufficient pure hydrogen fuel under the mild condition. This review comprehensively gathers the state-of-art solid-state hydrogen storage technologies using nanostructured materials involving nanoporous carbon materials metal-organic frameworks covalent organic frameworks porous aromatic frameworks nanoporous organic polymers and nanoscale hydrides. It describes significant advances achieved so far and main barriers need to be surmounted to approach practical applications as well as offers a perspective for sustainable energy research.
Techno-Economics Optimization of H2 and CO2 Compression for Renewable Energy Storage and Power-to-Gas Applications

The decarbonization of the industrial sector is imperative to achieve a sustainable future. Carbon capture and storage technologies are the leading options but lately the use of CO2 is also being considered as a very attractive alternative that approaches a circular economy. In this regard power to gas is a promising option to take advantage of renewable H2 by converting it together with the captured CO2 into renewable gases in particular renewable methane. As renewable energy production or the mismatch between renewable production and consumption is not constant it is essential to store renewable H2 or CO2 to properly run a methanation installation and produce renewable gas. This work analyses and optimizes the system layout and storage pressure and presents an annual cost (including CAPEX and OPEX) minimization. Results show the proper compression stages need to achieve the storage pressure that minimizes the system cost. This pressure is just below the supercritical pressure for CO2 and at lower pressures for H2 around 67 bar. This last quantity is in agreement with the usual pressures to store and distribute natural gas. Moreover the H2 storage costs are higher than that of CO2 even with lower mass quantities; this is due to the lower H2 density compared with CO2 . Finally it is concluded that the compressor costs are the most relevant costs for CO2 compression but the storage tank costs are the most relevant in the case of H2.
Hydrogen Assisted Macrodelamination in Gas Lateral Pipe

Hydrogen assisted macrodelamination in the pipe elbows of 40-year exploited lateral pipelines located behind the compressor station was studied. The crack on the external surface of the pipe elbow was revealed. Macrodelamination was occurred in the steel being influenced by the joined action of working loads and hydrogen absorbed by metal during long-term operation. The causes of the material degradation were investigated by non-destructive testing using ultrasound thickness meter observing microstructure hydrostatic pressure testing and mechanical properties testing of pipe steel.<br/>Intensive degradation of steel primarily essential reduction of plasticity was revealed. The degradation degree of the pipe elbow steel was higher than of the straight pipe steel regardless of a section was tensioned or compressed. Basing on the tensile tests carried out on cylindrical smooth and notched specimens from the pipe elbow steel it was established that the plasticity of the damaged steel could be measured correctly only on the specimens with a circular notch due to concentration of deformation in the cross section location only. The limitations in using elongation and reduction in area for characterisation of plasticity of the pipe steel with extensive delamination were defined. The diagnostic features of macrodelamination namely an abnormal thickness meter readings and a sharp decrease in hardness and plasticity of the pipe elbow steel were established.
Analysis of the Environmental Degradation Effects on the Cables of “La Arena” Bridge (Spain)

After nearly 25 years of service some of the wires of the tendons of “La Arena” bridge (Spain) started to exhibit the effects of environmental degradation processes. “La Arena” is cable-stayed bridge with 6 towers and a reference span between towers of about 100 meters. After a maintenance inspection of the bridge evidences of corrosion were detected in some of the galvanized wires of the cables. A more in-deep analysis of these wires revealed that many of them exhibited loss of section due to the corrosion process. In order to clarify the causes of this degradation event and to suggest some remedial actions an experimental program was designed. This program consisted of tensile and fatigue tests on some strand samples of the bridge together with a fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces of the wires its galvanized layer thickness and some hydrogen measurements (hydrogen embrittlement could be another effect of the environmental degradation process).Once the type and extension of the flaws in the wires was characterized a structural integrity assessment of the strands was performed with the aim of quantifying the margins until failure and establishing some maintenance recommendations.
Impact Assessment of Hydrogen Transmission on TD1 Parallel Pipeline Separation Distances

The recommended minimum separation distances in IGEM/TD/1 were based on a research programme that studied the different ways in which a failure of one buried natural gas transmission pipeline can affect another similar pipeline installed adjacent to the first taking account of the initial pressure wave propagating through the ground the size of the ground crater produced and the threat of escalation from fire if the second pipeline is exposed. The methodology developed from the research was first published in 2010 and is implemented in a software program (“PROPHET”). The distances in IGEM/TD/1 are generally cautious and are essentially determined by the size of the ground crater produced by pipeline ruptures as predicted by the methodology.

- Consider effects of thermal loading due to hydrogen fires where recommended natural gas separation distances are not met.
- Ground pressure loading: The current natural gas methodology is cautious.
- Ground pressure effects: The current natural gas methodology is applicable (no change for hydrogen).
- Ground crater formation: The current natural gas methodology is cautious for ruptures and applicable for punctures (almost no change for hydrogen).
- Thermal loading: The current natural gas methodology is cautious for the thermal loading from ruptures but not necessarily cautious for punctures. Calculations of the minimum flow velocity required to prevent failure of a natural gas pipeline are not cautious for hydrogen.
Detection, Characterization and Sizing of Hydrogen Induced Cracking in Pressure Vessels Using Phased Array Ultrasonic Data Processing

Pressure vessels operating in sour service conditions in refinery environments can be subject to the risk of H₂S cracking resulting from the hydrogen entering into the material. This risk which is related to the specific working conditions and to the quality of the steel used shall be properly managed in order to maintain the highest safety at a cost-effective level.<br/>Nowadays the typical management strategy is based on a risk based inspection (RBI) evaluation to define the inspection plan used in conjunction with a fitness for service (FFS) approach in defining if the vessel although presenting dangerous defects such as cracks can still be considered “fit for purpose” for a given time window based on specific fracture mechanics analysis.<br/>These vessels are periodically subject to non-destructive evaluation typically ultrasonic testing. Phased Array (PA) ultrasonic is the latest technology more and more used for this type of application.<br/>This paper presents the design and development of an optimized Phased Array ultrasonic inspection technique for the detection and sizing of hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) type flaws used as reference for comparison. Materials used containing natural operational defects were inspected in “as-service” conditions.<br/>Samples have then been inspected by means of a “full matrix capture” (FMC) acquisition process followed by “total focusing method” (TFM) data post processing. FCM-TFM data have been further post-processed and then used to create a 3D geometrical reconstruction of the volume inspected. Results obtained show the significant improvement that FMC/TFM has over traditional PA inspection techniques both in terms of sensitivity and resolution for this specific type of defect. Moreover since the FMC allows for the complete time domain signal to be captured from every element of a linear array probe the full set of data is available for post-processing.<br/>Finally the possibility to reconstruct the geometry of the component from the scans including the defects present in its volume represents the ideal solution for a reliable data transferring process to the engineering function for the subsequent FFS analysis.
Effect of Corrosion-induced Hydrogen Embrittlement and its Degradation Impact on Tensile Properties and Fracture Toughness of (Al-Cu-Mg) 2024 Alloy

In the present work the effect of artificial ageing of AA2024-T3 on the tensile mechanical properties and fracture toughness degradation due to corrosion exposure will be investigated. Tensile and fracture toughness specimens were artificially aged to tempers that correspond to Under-Ageing (UA) Peak-Ageing (PA) and Over-Ageing (OA) conditions and then were subsequently exposed to exfoliation corrosion environment. The corrosion exposure time was selected to be the least possible according to the experimental work of Alexopoulos et al. (2016) so as to avoid the formation of large surface pits trying to simulate the hydrogen embrittlement degradation only. The mechanical test results show that minimum corrosion-induced decrease in elongation at fracture was achieved for the peak-ageing condition while maximum was noticed at the under-ageing and over-ageing conditions. Yield stress decrease due to corrosion is less sensitive to tempering; fracture toughness decrease was sensitive to ageing heat treatment thus proving that the S΄ particles play a significant role on the corrosion-induced degradation.
The Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Capacity of Carbon Fibers The Effect of Hollow Porous Structure and Surface Modification

In this study highly porous carbon fiber was prepared for hydrogen storage. Porous carbon fiber (PCF) and activated porous carbon fiber (APCF) were derived by carbonization and chemical activation after selectively removing polyvinyl alcohol from a bi-component fiber composed of polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The chemical activation created more pores on the surface of the PCF and consequently highly porous APCF was obtained with an improved BET surface area (3058 m2 g−1) and micropore volume (1.18 cm3 g−1) compare to those of the carbon fiber which was prepared by calcination of monocomponent PAN. APCF was revealed to be very efficient for hydrogen storage its hydrogen capacity of 5.14 wt% at 77 K and 10 MPa. Such hydrogen storage capacity is much higher than that of activated carbon fibers reported previously. To further enhance hydrogen storage capacity catalytic Pd nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of the APCF. The Pd-deposited APCF exhibits a high hydrogen storage capacity of 5.45 wt% at 77 K and 10 MPa. The results demonstrate the potential of Pd-deposited APCF for efficient hydrogen storage.
Seasonal Hydrogen Storage for Sustainable Renewable Energy Integration in the Electricity Sector: A Case Study of Finland

Wind power is rapidly growing in the Finnish grid and Finland’s electricity consumption is low in the summer compared to the winter. Hence there is a need for storage that can absorb a large amount of energy during summer and discharge it during winter. This study examines one such storage technology geological hydrogen storage which has the potential to store energy on a GWh scale and also over longer periods of time. Finland’s electricity generation system was modelled with and without hydrogen storage using the LEAP-NEMO modeling toolkit. The results showed about 69% decline in carbon dioxide emissions as well as a decline in the fossil fuel-based power accompanied with a higher capability to meet demand with less imports in both scenarios. Finally a critical analysis of the Finnish electricity mix with and without hydrogen storage is presented.
Strength, Hardness, and Ductility Evidence of Solid Solution Strengthening and Limited Hydrogen Embrittlement in the Alloy System Palladium-Copper (Cu wt. % 5–25)

Strength hardness and ductility characteristics were determined for a series of palladium-copper alloys that compositionally vary from 5 to 25 weight percent copper. Alloy specimens subjected to vacuum annealing showed clear evidence of solid solution strengthening. These specimens showed as a function of increasing copper content increased yield strength ultimate strength and Vickers microhardness while their ductility was little affected by compositional differences. Annealed alloy specimens subsequently subjected to exposure to hydrogen at 323 K and PH2 = 1 atm showed evidence of hydrogen embrittlement up to a composition of ~15 wt. % Cu. The magnitude of the hydrogen embrittlement decreased with increasing copper content in the alloy.
Hydrogen Storage in Pure and Boron-Substituted Nanoporous Carbons—Numerical and Experimental Perspective

Nanoporous carbons remain the most promising candidates for effective hydrogen storage by physisorption in currently foreseen hydrogen-based scenarios of the world’s energy future. An optimal sorbent meeting the current technological requirement has not been developed yet. Here we first review the storage limitations of currently available nanoporous carbons then we discuss possible ways to improve their storage performance. We focus on two fundamental parameters determining the storage (the surface accessible for adsorption and hydrogen adsorption energy). We define numerically the values nanoporous carbons have to show to satisfy mobile application requirements at pressures lower than 120 bar. Possible necessary modifications of the topology and chemical compositions of carbon nanostructures are proposed and discussed. We indicate that pore wall fragmentation (nano-size graphene scaffolds) is a partial solution only and chemical modifications of the carbon pore walls are required. The positive effects (and their limits) of the carbon substitutions by B and Be atoms are described. The experimental ‘proof of concept’ of the proposed strategies is also presented. We show that boron substituted nanoporous carbons prepared by a simple arc-discharge technique show a hydrogen adsorption energy twice as high as their pure carbon analogs. These preliminary results justify the continuation of the joint experimental and numerical research effort in this field.
Cost Benefits of Optimizing Hydrogen Storage and Methanation Capacities for Power-to-Gas Plants in Dynamic Operation

Power-to-Gas technologies offer a promising approach for converting renewable electricity into a molecular form (fuel) to serve the energy demands of non-electric energy applications in all end-use sectors. The technologies have been broadly developed and are at the edge of a mass roll-out. The barriers that Power-to-Gas faces are no longer technical but are foremost regulatory and economic. This study focuses on a Power-to-Gas pathway where electricity is first converted in a water electrolyzer into hydrogen which is then synthetized with carbon dioxide to produce synthetic natural gas. A key aspect of this pathway is that an intermittent electricity supply could be used which could reduce the amount of electricity curtailment from renewable energy generation. Interim storages would then be necessary to decouple the synthesized part from hydrogen production to enable (I) longer continuous operation cycles for the methanation reactor and (II) increased annual full-load hours leading to an overall reduction in gas production costs. This work optimizes a Power-to-Gas plant configuration with respect to the cost benefits using a Monte Carlo-based simulation tool. The results indicate potential cost reductions of up to 17% in synthetic natural gas production by implementing well-balanced components and interim storages. This study also evaluates three different power sources which differ greatly in their optimal system configuration. Results from time-resolved simulations and sensitivity analyses for different plant designs and electricity sources are discussed with respect to technical and economic implications so as to facilitate a plant design process for decision makers.
Optimal Configuration of the Integrated Charging Station for PV and Hydrogen Storage

This paper designs the integrated charging station of PV and hydrogen storage based on the charging station. The energy storage system includes hydrogen energy storage for hydrogen production and the charging station can provide services for electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles at the same time. To improve the independent energy supply capacity of the hybrid charging station and reduce the cost the components are reasonably configured. To minimize the configuration cost of the integrated charging station and the proportion of power purchase to the demand of the charging station the energy flow strategy of the integrated charging station is designed and the optimal configuration model of optical storage capacity is constructed. The NSGA-II algorithm optimizes the non-inferior Pareto solution set and a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation evaluates the optimal configuration.
Intermetallic Compounds Synthesized by Mechanical Alloying for Solid-State Hydrogen Storage: A Review

Hydrogen energy is a very attractive option in dealing with the existing energy crisis. For the development of a hydrogen energy economy hydrogen storage technology must be improved to over the storage limitations. Compared with traditional hydrogen storage technology the prospect of hydrogen storage materials is broader. Among all types of hydrogen storage materials solid hydrogen storage materials are most promising and have the most safety security. Solid hydrogen storage materials include high surface area physical adsorption materials and interstitial and non-interstitial hydrides. Among them interstitial hydrides also called intermetallic hydrides are hydrides formed by transition metals or their alloys. The main alloy types are A2B AB AB2 AB3 A2B7 AB5 and BCC. A is a hydride that easily forms metal (such as Ti V Zr and Y) while B is a non-hydride forming metal (such as Cr Mn and Fe). The development of intermetallic compounds as hydrogen storage materials is very attractive because their volumetric capacity is much higher (80–160 kgH2m−3 ) than the gaseous storage method and the liquid storage method in a cryogenic tank (40 and 71 kgH2m−3 ). Additionally for hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions the environmental requirements are lower than that of physical adsorption materials (ultra-low temperature) and the simplicity of the procedure is higher than that of non-interstitial hydrogen storage materials (multiple steps and a complex catalyst). In addition there are abundant raw materials and diverse ingredients. For the synthesis and optimization of intermetallic compounds in addition to traditional melting methods mechanical alloying is a very important synthesis method which has a unique synthesis mechanism and advantages. This review focuses on the application of mechanical alloying methods in the field of solid hydrogen storage materials.
Seasonal Storage and Alternative Carriers: A Flexible Hydrogen Supply Chain Model

A viable hydrogen infrastructure is one of the main challenges for fuel cells in mobile applications. Several studies have investigated the most cost-efficient hydrogen supply chain structure with a focus on hydrogen transportation. However supply chain models based on hydrogen produced by electrolysis require additional seasonal hydrogen storage capacity to close the gap between fluctuation in renewable generation from surplus electricity and fuelling station demand. To address this issue we developed a model that draws on and extends approaches in the literature with respect to long-term storage. Thus we analyse Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC) and show their potential impact on future hydrogen mobility. We demonstrate that LOHC-based pathways are highly promising especially for smaller-scale hydrogen demand and if storage in salt caverns remains uncompetitive but emit more greenhouse gases (GHG) than other gaseous or hydrogen ones. Liquid hydrogen as a seasonal storage medium offers no advantage compared to LOHC or cavern storage since lower electricity prices for flexible operation cannot balance the investment costs of liquefaction plants. A well-to-wheel analysis indicates that all investigated pathways have less than 30% GHG-emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel pathways within a European framework.
Hydrogen Storage for Mobility: A Review

Numerous reviews on hydrogen storage have previously been published. However most of these reviews deal either exclusively with storage materials or the global hydrogen economy. This paper presents a review of hydrogen storage systems that are relevant for mobility applications. The ideal storage medium should allow high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities quick uptake and release of fuel operation at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure safe use and balanced cost-effectiveness. All current hydrogen storage technologies have significant drawbacks including complex thermal management systems boil-off poor efficiency expensive catalysts stability issues slow response rates high operating pressures low energy densities and risks of violent and uncontrolled spontaneous reactions. While not perfect the current leading industry standard of compressed hydrogen offers a functional solution and demonstrates a storage option for mobility compared to other technologies.
