Hybrid Power-heat Microgrid Solution Using Hydrogen as an Energy Vector for Residential Houses in Spain. A Case Study

In order to favor a transition to a renewable energy economy it is necessary to study the possible permeation of renewable energy sources not only in the electric grid or industrial scale but also in the small householding scale. One of the most interesting technologies available for this purpose is solar energy since it is a mature technology that can be easily installed in every rooftop. Thus a techno-economic assessment was carried out to evaluate the installation of a solar-based power-heat hybrid microgrid considering the use of hydrogen as an energy vector in a typical residential house in Spain. Lead-acid batteries plus the photovoltaic and solar thermal energy installation are complemented with a hydrogen system composed of an electrolyzer two metal hydride bottles and a fuel cell. A simulation tool has been generated using experimental models developed and validated with real equipment for each one of the electric microgrid component. Three operating modes were tested making use of this tool to better manage the energy consumed/produced and optimize the economic output of the facility. The results show that setting up a hydrogen-based microgrid in a residential house is unviable today mainly due to the high cost of hydrogen generation and consumption equipment. If only solar energy is considered the microgrid inversion (12.500 €) is recovered in ten years. On the other hand selling the electricity output has almost no repercussions considering current electrical rates in Spain. Finally while using an optimization algorithm to manage energy use battery life-spam and economic benefit slightly increase. However this profit may not be enough to justify the use of a more complex control system. The results of this research will help users renewable energy companies investigators and policymakers to better understand the different factors influencing the spread of renewable smart grids in households and propose solutions to address these.
Production of High-purity Hydrogen from Paper Recycling Black Liquor via Sorption Enhanced Steam Reforming

Environmentally friendly and energy saving treatment of black liquor (BL) a massively produced waste in Kraft papermaking process still remains a big challenge. Here by adopting a Ni-CaO-Ca12Al14O33 bifunctional catalyst derived from hydrotalcite-like materials we demonstrate the feasibility of producing high-purity H2 (∼96%) with 0.9 mol H2 mol-1 C yield via the sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) of BL. The SESRBL performance in terms of H2 production maintained stable for 5 cycles but declined from the 6th cycle. XRD Raman spectroscopy elemental analysis and energy dispersive techniques were employed to rationalize the deactivation of the catalyst. It was revealed that gradual sintering and agglomeration of Ni and CaO and associated coking played important roles in catalyst deactivation and performance degradation of SESRBL while deposition of Na and K from the BL might also be responsible for the declined performance. On the other hand it was demonstrated that the SESRBL process could effectively reduce the emission of sulfur species by storing it as CaSO3. Our results highlight a promising alternative for BL treatment and H2 production thereby being beneficial for pollution control and environment governance in the context of mitigation of climate change.
Effect of Supercharging on Improving Thermal Efficiency and Modifying Combustion Characteristics in Lean-burn Direct-injection Near-zero-emission Hydrogen Engines

The authors have proposed a new combustion process called the Plume Ignition Combustion Concept (PCC) in which with an optimal combination of hydrogen injection timing and controlled jet geometry the plume of the hydrogen jet is spark-ignited to accomplish combustion of a rich mixture. This combustion process markedly improves thermal efficiency by reducing cooling loss which is essential for increasing thermal efficiency in a hydrogen engine while maintaining high power. In order to improve thermal efficiency and reduce NOx formation further PCC was applied to a lean-burn regime to burn a leaner mixture globally. In this study the effect of supercharging which was applied to recover the reduced output power due to the leaner mixture on improving thermal efficiency was confirmed along with clarifying the cause.
Patterned Membranes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells Working at Low Humidity

High performing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) that can operate at low relative humidity is a continuing technical challenge for PEMFC developers. In this work micro-patterned membranes are demonstrated at the cathode side by solution casting techniques using stainless steel moulds with laser-imposed periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Three types of patterns lotus lines and sharklet are investigated for their influence on the PEMFC power performance at varying humidity conditions. The experimental results show that the cathode electrolyte pattern in all cases enhances the fuel cell power performance at 100% relative humidity (RH). However only the sharklet pattern exhibits a significant improvement at 25% RH where a peak power density of 450 mW cm−2 is recorded compared with 150 mW cm−2 of the conventional flat membrane. The improvements are explored based on high-frequency resistance electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and hydrogen crossover by in situ membrane electrode assembly (MEA) testing.
A Comparison of Two Hydrogen Storages in a Fossil Free Direct Reduced Iron Process

Hydrogen direct reduction has been proposed as a means to decarbonize primary steelmaking. Preferably the hydrogen necessary for this process is produced via water electrolysis. A downside to electrolysis is the large electricity demand. The electricity cost of water electrolysis may be reduced by using a hydrogen storage to exploit variations in electricity price i.e. producing more hydrogen when the electricity price is low and vice versa. In this paper we compare two kinds of hydrogen storages in the context of a hydrogen direct reduction process via simulations based on historic Swedish electricity prices: the storage of gaseous hydrogen in an underground lined rock cavern and the storage of hydrogen chemically bound in methanol. We find the methanol-based storages to be economically advantageous to lined rock caverns in several scenarios. The main advantages of methanol-based storage are the low investment cost of storage capacity and the possibility to decouple storage capacity from rate capacity. Nevertheless no storage option is found to be profitable for historic Swedish electricity prices. For the storages to be profitable electricity prices must be volatile with relatively frequent high peaks which has happened rarely in Sweden in recent years. However such scenarios may become more common with the expected increase of intermittent renewable power in the Swedish electricity system.
Alternative Energy Technologies as a Cultural Endeavor: A Case Study of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Development in Germany

Background: The wider background to this article is the shift in the energy paradigm from fossil energy sources to renewable sources which should occur in the twenty-first century. This transformation requires the development of alternative energy technologies that enable the deployment of renewable energy sources in transportation heating and electricity. Among others hydrogen and fuel cell technologies have the potential to fulfill this requirement and to contribute to a sustainable and emission-free transport and energy system. However whether they will ever reach broad societal acceptance will not only depend on technical issues alone. The aim of our study is to reveal the importance of nontechnical issues. Therefore the article at hand presents a case study of hydrogen and fuel cells in Germany and aims at highlighting the cultural context that affects their development.<br/>Methods: Our results were obtained from a rich pool of data generated in various research projects through more than 30 in-depth interviews direct observations and document analyses.<br/>Results: We found that individual and collective actors developed five specific supportive practices which they deploy in five diverse arenas of meaning in order to attach certain values to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.<br/>Conclusions: Based on the results we drew more general conclusions and deducted an overall model for the analysis of culture in technological innovations that is outlined at the end of the article. It constitutes our contribution to the interdisciplinary collaboration required for tackling the shift in this energy paradigm.
Modeling of Fixed Bed Reactor for Coal Tar Hydrogenation via the Kinetic Lumping Approach

Hydrogenation technology is an indispensable chemical upgrading process for converting the heavy feedstock into favorable lighter products. In this work a new kinetic model containing four hydrocarbon lumps (feedstock diesel gasoline cracking gas) was developed to describe the coal tar hydrogenation process the Levenberg–Marquardt’s optimization algorithm was used to determine the kinetic parameters by minimizing the sum of square errors between experimental and calculated data the predictions from model validation showed a good agreement with experimental values. Subsequently an adiabatic reactor model based on proposed lumped kinetic model was constructed to further investigate the performance of hydrogenation fixed-bed units the mass balance and energy balance within the phases in the reactor were taken into accounts in the form of ordinary differential equation. An application of the reactor model was performed for simulating the actual bench-scale plant of coal tar hydrogenation the simulated results on the products yields and temperatures distribution along with the reactor are shown to be good consistent with the experimental data.
Conceptual Design of a Hybrid Hydrogen Fuel Cell/Battery Blended-Wing-Body Unmanned Aerial Vehicle—An Overview

The manuscript presents the conceptual design phase of an unmanned aerial vehicle with the objective of a systems approach towards the integration of a hydrogen fuel-cell system and Li-ion batteries into an aerodynamically efficient platform representative of future aircraft configurations. Using a classical approach to aircraft design and a combination of low- and high-resolution computational simulations a final blended wing body UAV was designed with a maximum take-off weight of 25 kg and 4 m wingspan. Preliminary aerodynamic and propulsion sizing demonstrated that the aircraft is capable of completing a 2 h long mission powered by a 650 W fuel cell hybridized with a 100 Wh battery pack and with a fuel quantity of 80 g of compressed hydrogen.
Research on Hydrogen Consumption and Driving Range of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle under the CLTC-P Condition

Hydrogen consumption and mileage are important economic indicators of fuel cell vehicles. Hydrogen consumption is the fundamental reason that restricts mileage. Since there are few quantitative studies on hydrogen consumption during actual vehicle operation the high cost of hydrogen consumption in outdoor testing makes it impossible to guarantee the accuracy of the test. Therefore this study puts forward a test method based on the hydrogen consumption of fuel cell vehicles under CLTC-P operating conditions to test the hydrogen consumption of fuel cell vehicles per 100 km. Finally the experiment shows that the mileage calculated by hydrogen consumption has a higher consistency with the actual mileage. Based on this hydrogen consumption test method the hydrogen consumption can be accurately measured and the test time and cost can be effectively reduced.
Hydrogenation Production via Chemical Looping Reforming of Coke Oven Gas

Coke oven gas (COG) is one of the most important by-products in the steel industry and the conversion of COG to value-added products has attracted much attention from both economic and environmental views. In this work we apply the chemical looping reforming technology to produce pure H2 from COG. A series of La1-xSrxFeO3 (x = 0 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.5 0.6) perovskite oxides were prepared as oxygen carriers for this purpose. The reduction behaviours of La1-xSrxFeO3 perovskite by different reducing gases (H2 CO CH4 and the mixed gases) are investigated to discuss the competition effect of different components in COG for reacting with the oxygen carriers. The results show that reduction temperatures of H2 and CO are much lower than that of CH4 and high temperatures (>800 °C) are requested for selective oxidation of methane to syngas. The co-existence of CO and H2 shows weak effect on the equilibrium of methane conversion at high temperatures but the oxidation of methane to syngas can inhibit the consumption of CO and H2. The doping of suitable amounts of Sr in LaFeO3 perovskite (e.g. La0.5Sr0.5FeO3) significantly promotes the reactivity for selective oxidation of methane to syngas and inhibits the formation of carbon deposition obtaining both high methane conversion in the COG oxidation step and high hydrogen yield in the water splitting step. The La0.5Sr0.5FeO3 shows the highest methane conversion (67.82%) hydrogen yield (3.34 mmol·g-1) and hydrogen purity (99.85%). The hydrogen yield in water splitting step is treble as high as the hydrogen consumption in reduction step. These results reveal that chemical looping reforming of COG to produce pure H2 is feasible and an O2-assistant chemical looping reforming process can further improve the redox stability of oxygen carrier.
Modelling and Designing Cryogenic Hydrogen Tanks for Future Aircraft Applications

In the near future the challenges to reduce the economic and social dependency on fossil fuels must be faced increasingly. A sustainable and efficient energy supply based on renewable energies enables large-scale applications of electro-fuels for e.g. the transport sector. The high gravimetric energy density makes liquefied hydrogen a reasonable candidate for energy storage in a light-weight application such as aviation. Current aircraft structures are designed to accommodate jet fuel and gas turbines allowing a limited retrofitting only. New designs such as the blended-wing-body enable a more flexible integration of new storage technologies and energy converters e.g. cryogenic hydrogen tanks and fuel cells. Against this background a tank-design model is formulated which considers geometrical mechanical and thermal aspects as well as specific mission profiles while considering a power supply by a fuel cell. This design approach enables the determination of required tank mass and storage density respectively. A new evaluation value is defined including the vented hydrogen mass throughout the flight enabling more transparent insights on mass shares. Subsequently a systematic approach in tank partitioning leads to associated compromises regarding the tank weight. The analysis shows that cryogenic hydrogen tanks are highly competitive with kerosene tanks in terms of overall mass which is further improved by the use of a fuel cell.
Testing Programme for Hydrogen Tolerance Tests of Domestic and Commercial Natural Gas Appliances

The THyGA project (‘Testing Hydrogen admixture for Gas Applications’) focusses on technical aspects and the regulatory framework concerning the potential operation of domestic and commercial end-user appliances with hydrogen / natural gas blends.<br/>The core of the project is a broad experimental campaign with the aim to conduct up to 100 hydrogen tolerance tests. In addition the technical status quo and present knowledge about hydrogen impact on domestic and commercial appliances are assessed and potential future developments of rules and standards are discussed. Also mitigation strategies for coping with high levels of hydrogen admixture will be developed. By this broad approach the project aims at investigating which levels of hydrogen blending impact the various appliance technologies and to which extent in order to identify the regime in which a safe efficient and low-polluting operation is possible.<br/>The series of public reports by the THyGA project starts with several publications from work package 2 which sets the basis for the upcoming results and discussion of the experimental campaign as well as mitigation and standardisation topics.<br/>This report D2.5 completes the series of public reports from work package 2. It explains the steps of development of the test programme for gas-fired appliance tests with hydrogen admixture and especially describes the exchange between the THyGA partners and the external stakeholders.<br/>The report also explains the process of acquisition of appliances to test and method of selecting appliances.
Modelling and Analyzing the Impact of Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas on Domestic Gas Boilers in a Decarbonization Perspective

Decarbonization of energy economy is nowadays a topical theme and several pathways are under discussion. Gaseous fuels have a fundamental role for this transition and the production of low carbon-impact fuels is necessary to deal with this challenge. The generation of renewable hydrogen is a trusted solution since this energy vector can be promptly produced from electricity and injected into the existing natural gas infrastructure granting storage capacity and easy transportation. This scenario will lead in the near future to hydrogen enrichment of natural gas whose impact on the infrastructures is being actively studied. The effect on end-user devices such as domestic gas boilers instead is still little analyzed and tested but is fundamental to be assessed. The aim of this research is to generate knowledge on the effect of hydrogen enrichment on the widely used premixed boilers: the investigations include pollutant emissions efficiency flashback and explosion hazard control system and materials selection. A model for calculating several parameters related to combustion of hydrogen enriched natural gas is presented. Guidelines for the design of new components are provided and an insight is given on the maximum hydrogen blending bearable by the current boilers.
Optimal Synergy between Photovoltaic Panels and Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Green Power Supply of a Green Building—A Case Study

Alternative energy resources have a significant function in the performance and decarbonization of power engendering schemes in the building application domain. Additionally “green buildings” play a special role in reducing energy consumption and minimizing CO2 emissions in the building sector. This research article analyzes the performance of alternative primary energy sources (sun and hydrogen) integrated into a hybrid photovoltaic panel/fuel cell system and their optimal synergy to provide green energy for a green building. The study addresses the future hydrogen-based economy which involves the supply of hydrogen as the fuel needed to provide fuel cell energy through a power distribution infrastructure. The objective of this research is to use fuel cells in this field and to investigate their use as a green building energy supply through a hybrid electricity generation system which also uses photovoltaic panels to convert solar energy. The fuel cell hydrogen is supplied through a distribution network in which hydrogen production is outsourced and independent of the power generation system. The case study creates virtual operating conditions for this type of hybrid energy system and simulates its operation over a one-year period. The goal is to demonstrate the role and utility of fuel cells in virtual conditions by analyzing energy and economic performance indicators as well as carbon dioxide emissions. The case study analyzes the optimal synergy between photovoltaic panels and fuel cells for the power supply of a green building. In the simulation an optimally configured hybrid system supplies 100% of the energy to the green building while generating carbon dioxide emissions equal to 11.72% of the average value calculated for a conventional energy system providing similar energy to a standard residential building. Photovoltaic panels account for 32% of the required annual electricity production and the fuel cells generate 68% of the total annual energy output of the system.
Gas Transition: Renewable Hydrogen’s Future in Eastern Australia’s Energy Networks

The energy transition for a net-zero future will require deep decarbonisation that hydrogen is uniquely positioned to facilitate. This technoeconomic study considers renewable hydrogen production transmission and storage for energy networks using the National Electricity Market (NEM) region of Eastern Australia as a case study. Plausible growth projections are developed to meet domestic demands for gas out to 2040 based on industry commitments and scalable technology deployment. Analysis using the discounted cash flow technique is performed to determine possible levelised cost figures for key processes out to 2050. Variables include geographic limitations growth rates and capacity factors to minimise abatement costs compared to business-as-usual natural gas forecasts. The study provides an optimistic outlook considering renewable power-to-X opportunities for blending replacement and gas-to-power to show viable pathways for the gas transition to green hydrogen. Blending is achievable with modest (3%) green premiums this decade and substitution for natural gas combustion in the long-term is likely to represent an abatement cost of AUD 18/tCO2-e including transmission and storage.
Numerical Evaluation of the Effect of Fuel Blending with CO2 and H2 on the Very Early Corona‐Discharge Behavior in Spark Ignited Engines

Reducing green‐house gases emission from light‐duty vehicles is compulsory in order to slow down the climate change. The application of High Frequency Ignition systems based on the Corona discharge effect has shown the potential to extend the dilution limit of engine operating conditions promoting lower temperatures and faster combustion events thus higher thermal and indicating efficiency. Furthermore predicting the behavior of Corona ignition devices against new sustainable fuel blends including renewable hydrogen and biogas is crucial in order to deal with the short‐intermediate term fleet electric transition. The numerical evaluation of Corona‐induced discharge radius and radical species under those conditions can be helpful in order to capture local effects that could be reached only with complex and expensive optical investigations. Using an ex‐ tended version of the Corona one‐dimensional code previously published by the present authors the simulation of pure methane and different methane–hydrogen blends and biogas–hydrogen blends mixed with air was performed. Each mixture was simulated both for 10% recirculated exhaust gas dilution and for its corresponding dilute upper limit which was estimated by means of chemical kinetics simulations integrated with a custom misfire detection criterion.
A General Vision for Reduction of Energy Consumption and CO2 Emissions from the Steel Industry

The 2018 IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s) report defined the goal to limit global warming to 1.5 ◦C by 2050. This will require “rapid and far-reaching transitions in land energy industry buildings transport and cities”. The challenge falls on all sectors especially energy production and industry. In this regard the recent progress and future challenges of greenhouse gas emissions and energy supply are first briefly introduced. Then the current situation of the steel industry is presented. Steel production is predicted to grow by 25–30% by 2050. The dominant iron-making route blast furnace (BF) especially is an energy-intensive process based on fossil fuel consumption; the steel sector is thus responsible for about 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In order to take up the 2050 challenge emissions should see significant cuts. Correspondingly specific emissions (t CO2/t steel) should be radically decreased. Several large research programs in big steelmaking countries and the EU have been carried out over the last 10–15 years or are ongoing. All plausible measures to decrease CO2 emissions were explored here based on the published literature. The essential results are discussed and concluded. The specific emissions of “world steel” are currently at 1.8 t CO2/t steel. Improved energy efficiency by modernizing plants and adopting best available technologies in all process stages could decrease the emissions by 15–20%. Further reductions towards 1.0 t CO2/t steel level are achievable via novel technologies like top gas recycling in BF oxygen BF and maximal replacement of coke by biomass. These processes are however waiting for substantive industrialization. Generally substituting hydrogen for carbon in reductants and fuels like natural gas and coke gas can decrease CO2 emissions remarkably. The same holds for direct reduction processes (DR) which have spread recently exceeding 100 Mt annual capacity. More radical cut is possible via CO2 capture and storage (CCS). The technology is well-known in the oil industry; and potential applications in other sectors including the steel industry are being explored. While this might be a real solution in propitious circumstances it is hardly universally applicable in the long run. More auspicious is the concept that aims at utilizing captured carbon in the production of chemicals food or fuels e.g. methanol (CCU CCUS). The basic idea is smart but in the early phase of its application the high energy-consumption and costs are disincentives. The potential of hydrogen as a fuel and reductant is well-known but it has a supporting role in iron metallurgy. In the current fight against climate warming H2 has come into the “limelight” as a reductant fuel and energy storage. The hydrogen economy concept contains both production storage distribution and uses. In ironmaking several research programs have been launched for hydrogen production and reduction of iron oxides. Another global trend is the transfer from fossil fuel to electricity. “Green” electricity generation and hydrogen will be firmly linked together. The electrification of steel production is emphasized upon in this paper as the recycled scrap is estimated to grow from the 30% level to 50% by 2050. Finally in this review all means to reduce specific CO2 emissions have been summarized. By thorough modernization of production facilities and energy systems and by adopting new pioneering methods “world steel” could reach the level of 0.4–0.5 t CO2/t steel and thus reduce two-thirds of current annual emissions.
A Hot Syngas Purification System Integrated with Downdraft Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste

Gasification of municipal solid waste (MSW) with subsequent utilization of syngas in gas engines/turbines and solid oxide fuel cells can substantially increase the power generation of waste-to-energy facilities and optimize the utilization of wastes as a sustainable energy resources. However purification of syngas to remove multiple impurities such as particulates tar HCl alkali chlorides and sulfur species is required. This study investigates the feasibility of high temperature purification of syngas from MSW gasification with the focus on catalytic tar reforming and desulfurization. Syngas produced from a downdraft fixed-bed gasifier is purified by a multi-stage system. The system comprises of a fluidized-bed catalytic tar reformer a filter for particulates and a fixed-bed reactor for dechlorination and then desulfurization with overall downward cascading of the operating temperatures throughout the system. Novel nano-structured nickel catalyst supported on alumina and regenerable Ni-Zn desulfurization sorbent loaded on honeycomb are synthesized. Complementary sampling and analysis methods are applied to quantify the impurities and determine their distribution at different stages. Experimental and thermodynamic modeling results are compared to determine the kinetic constraints in the integrated system. The hot purification system demonstrates up to 90% of tar and sulfur removal efficiency increased total syngas yield (14%) and improved cold gas efficiency (12%). The treated syngas is potentially applicable in gas engines/turbines and solid oxide fuel cells based on the dew points and concentration limits of the remaining tar compounds. Reforming of raw syngas by nickel catalyst for over 20 h on stream shows strong resistance to deactivation. Desulfurization of syngas from MSW gasification containing significantly higher proportion of carbonyl sulfide than hydrogen sulfide traces of tar and hydrogen chloride demonstrates high performance of Ni-Zn sorbents.
An Overview of the Classification, Production and Utilization of Biofuels for Internal Combustion Engine Applications

Biofuel a cost-effective safe and environmentally benign fuel produced from renewable sources has been accepted as a sustainable replacement and a panacea for the damaging effects of the exploration for and consumption of fossil-based fuels. The current work examines the classification generation and utilization of biofuels particularly in internal combustion engine (ICE) applications. Biofuels are classified according to their physical state technology maturity the generation of feedstock and the generation of products. The methods of production and the advantages of the application of biogas bioalcohol and hydrogen in spark ignition engines as well as biodiesel Fischer– Tropsch fuel and dimethyl ether in compression ignition engines in terms of engine performance and emission are highlighted. The generation of biofuels from waste helps in waste minimization proper waste disposal and sanitation. The utilization of biofuels in ICEs improves engine performance and mitigates the emission of poisonous gases. There is a need for appropriate policy frameworks to promote commercial production and seamless deployment of these biofuels for transportation applications with a view to guaranteeing energy security.
A Review of Synthetic Fuels for Passenger Vehicles

Synthetic fuels produced with renewable surplus electricity depict an interesting solution for the decarbonization of mobility and transportation applications which are not suited for electrification. With the objective to compare various synthetic fuels an analysis of all the energy conversion steps is conducted from the electricity source i.e. wind- solar- or hydro-power to the final application i.e. a vehicle driving a certain number of miles. The investigated fuels are hydrogen methane methanol dimethyl ether and Diesel. While their production process is analyzed based on literature the usage of these fuels is analyzed based on chassis dynanometer measurement data of various EURO-6b passenger vehicles. Conventional and hybrid power-trains as well as various carbon dioxide sources are investigated in two scenarios. The first reference scenario considers market-ready technology only while the second future scenario considers technology which is currently being developed in industry and assumed to be market-ready in near future. With the results derived in this study and with consideration of boundary conditions i.e. availability of infrastructure storage technology of gaseous fuels energy density requirements etc. the most energy efficient of the corresponding suitable synthetic fuels can be chosen.
Environmental and Energy Life Cycle Analyses of Passenger Vehicle Systems Using Fossil Fuel-derived Hydrogen

Hydrogen energy utilization is expected due to its environmental and energy efficiencies. However many issues remain to be solved in the social implementation of hydrogen energy through water electrolysis. This analyzes and compares the energy consumption and GHG emissions of fossil fuel-derived hydrogen and gasoline energy systems over their entire life cycle. The results demonstrate that for similar vehicle weights the hydrogen energy system consumes 1.8 MJ/km less energy and emits 0.15 kg-CO 2 eq./km fewer GHG emissions than those of the gasoline energy system. Hydrogen derived from fossil fuels may contribute to future energy systems due to its stable energy supply and economic efficiency. Lowering the power source carbon content also improved the environmental and energy efficiencies of hydrogen energy derived from fossil fuels.
Development and Comparison of the Test Methods Proposed in the Chinese Test Specifications for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Fuel cell electric vehicles are generally considered to have broad development prospects due to their high efficiency and zero emissions. The governments of the United States Japan the European Union and China are taking action to promote the development of the industry. In 2020 China launched a fuel cell electric vehicle demonstration project and there will be 30∼50 thousand FCEVs included in this project by the end of 2025. How to standardize the consistency of data and develop a unified and accurate evaluation method is an important topic. The difficulty is how to keep balance among scientificity neutrality and feasibility in the evaluation method. In order to evaluate the performance of vehicles in demonstration operation projects China has issued the "Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Test Specifications" which is an important guide for the future development of fuel cell electric vehicles in China. This paper compares the test methods for critical parameters in this specifications with those used in the United States and Japan. It explains China’s technical considerations in detail including fuel cell system rated power the volume power density of the fuel cell stack fuel cell system specific power fuel cell system sub-zero cold start and fuel cell electric vehicle range contributed by hydrogen. For the volume power density of the fuel cell stack as an example both the US Department of Energy and Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization have proposed technical goals. However the lack of specific and detailed test methods has confused the industry. We propose a new test method using bipolar plate measurement based on scientificity feasibility and neutrality This is the first time to define the measuring method of the volume and specific power density of the fuel cell stack. For sub-zero cold start we put forward a feasible scheme for sub-zero cold start at the system level. For range contributed by hydrogen we propose a new test method that can distinguish the contributing of electric and hydrogen energy. Furthermore a hydrogen-to-electric conversion formula is proposed to calculate the equivalent hydrogen consumption which makes it possible to compare the energy consumption between plug-in and non-plug-in vehicles. At the same time this approach is significant in helping fuel cell-related enterprises to understand the formulation of China’s “Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Test Specifications”. It should also be helpful for guiding product design and predicting fuel cell electric vehicle policy direction in China.
Low Carbon Scenario Analysis of a Hydrogen-Based Energy Transition for On-Road Transportation in California

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are emerging as one of the prominent zero emission vehicle technologies. This study follows a deterministic modeling approach to project two scenarios of FCEV adoption and the resulting hydrogen demand (low and high) up to 2050 in California using a transportation transition model. The study then estimates the number of hydrogen production and refueling facilities required to meet demand. The impact of system scale-up and learning rates on hydrogen price is evaluated using standalone supply chain models: H2A HDSAM HRSAM and HDRSAM. A sensitivity analysis explores key factors that affect hydrogen prices. In the high scenario light and heavy-duty fuel cell vehicle stocks reach 12.5 million and 1 million by 2050 respectively. The resulting annual hydrogen demand is 3.9 billion kg making hydrogen the dominant transportation fuel. Satisfying such high future demands will require rapid increases in infrastructure investments starting now but especially after 2030 when there is an exponential increase in the number of production plants and refueling stations. In the long term electrolytic hydrogen delivered using dedicated hydrogen pipelines to larger stations offers substantial cost savings. Feedstock prices size of the hydrogen market and station utilization are the prominent parameters that affect hydrogen price.
Optimal Scheduling of a Hydrogen-Based Energy Hub Considering a Stochastic Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Approach

Nowadays the integration of multi-energy carriers is one of the most critical matters in smart energy systems with the aim of meeting sustainable energy development indicators. Hydrogen is referred to as one of the main energy carriers in the future energy industry but its integration into the energy system faces different open challenges which have not yet been comprehensively studied. In this paper a novel day-ahead scheduling is presented to reach the optimal operation of a hydrogen-based energy hub based on a stochastic multi-attribute decision-making approach. In this way the energy hub model is first developed by providing a detailed model of Power-to-Hydrogen (P2H) facilities. Then a new multi-objective problem is given by considering the prosumer’s role in the proposed energy hub model as well as the integrated demand response program (IDRP). The proposed model introduces a comprehensive approach from the analysis of the historical data to the final decision-making with the aim of minimizing the system operation cost and carbon emission. Moreover to deal with system uncertainty the scenario-based method is applied to model the renewable energy resources fluctuation. The proposed problem is defined as mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and to solve this problem a simple augmented e-constrained (SAUGMECON) method is employed. Finally the simulation of the proposed model is performed on a case study and the obtained results show the effectiveness and benefits of the proposed scheme.
Public Acceptance for the Implementation of Hydrogen Self-refueling Stations

The utilization of hydrogen energy is important for achieving a low-carbon society. Japan has set ambitious goals for hydrogen stations and fuel cell vehicles focusing on the introduction and dissemination of self-refuelling systems. This paper evaluates public trust in the fuel equipment and self-handling technology related to self-refuelling hydrogen stations and compares it with that for widespread gasoline stations. To this end the results of an online survey of 300 people with Japanese driver licenses are reported and analyzed. The results show that trust in the equipment and self-handling is more important for the user than trust in the fuel. In addition to introduce and disseminate new technology such as hydrogen stations users must be made aware of the risk of using the technology until it becomes as familiar as existing gasoline station technology.
An Overview of Promising Alternative Fuels for Road, Rail, Air, and Inland Waterway Transport in Germany

To solve the challenge of decarbonizing the transport sector a broad variety of alternative fuels based on different concepts including Power-to-Gas and Power-to-Liquid and propulsion systems have been developed. The current research landscape is investigating either a selection of fuel options or a selection of criteria a comprehensive overview is missing so far. This study aims to close this gap by providing a holistic analysis of existing fuel and drivetrain options spanning production to utilization. For this purpose a case study for Germany is performed considering different vehicle classes in road rail inland waterway and air transport. The evaluated criteria on the production side include technical maturity costs as well as environmental impacts whereas on the utilization side possible blending with existing fossil fuels and the satisfaction of the required mission ranges are evaluated. Overall the fuels and propulsion systems Methanol-to-Gasoline Fischer–Tropsch diesel and kerosene hydrogen battery-electric propulsion HVO DME and natural gas are identified as promising future options. All of these promising fuels could reach near-zero greenhouse gas emissions bounded to some mandatory preconditions. However the current research landscape is characterized by high insecurity with regard to fuel costs depending on the predicted range and length of value chains.
Fuel Cell Power Systems for Maritime Applications: Progress and Perspectives

Fuel cells as clean power sources are very attractive for the maritime sector which is committed to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant emissions from ships. This paper presents a technological review on fuel cell power systems for maritime applications from the past two decades. The available fuels including hydrogen ammonia renewable methane and methanol for fuel cells under the context of sustainable maritime transportation and their pre-processing technologies are analyzed. Proton exchange membrane molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells are found to be the most promising options for maritime applications once energy efficiency power capacity and sensitivity to fuel impurities are considered. The types layouts and characteristics of fuel cell modules are summarized based on the existing applications in particular industrial or residential sectors. The various research and demonstration projects of fuel cell power systems in the maritime industry are reviewed and the challenges with regard to power capacity safety reliability durability operability and costs are analyzed. Currently power capacity costs and lifetime of the fuel cell stack are the primary barriers. Coupling with batteries modularization mass production and optimized operating and control strategies are all important pathways to improve the performance of fuel cell power systems.

Thermodynamic Modeling of Hydrogen Refueling for Heavy-duty Fuel Cell Buses and Comparison with Aggregated Real Data

The foreseen uptake of hydrogen mobility is a fundamental step towards the decarbonization of the transport sector. Under such premises both refuelling infrastructure and vehicles should be deployed together with improved refuelling protocols. Several studies focus on refuelling the light-duty vehicles with 10 kgH2 up to 700 bar however less known effort is reported for refuelling heavy-duty vehicles with 30–40 kgH2 at 350 bar. The present study illustrates the application of a lumped model to a fuel cell bus tank-to-tank refuelling event tailored upon the real data acquired in the 3Emotion Project. The evolution of the main refuelling quantities such as pressure temperature and mass flow are predicted dynamically throughout the refuelling process as a function of the operating parameters within the safety limits imposed by SAE J2601/2 technical standard. The results show to refuel the vehicle tank from half to full capacity with an Average Pressure Ramp Rate (APRR) equal to 0.03 MPa/s are needed about 10 min. Furthermore it is found that the effect of varying the initial vehicle tank pressure is more significant than changing the ambient temperature on the refuelling performances. In conclusion the analysis of the effect of different APRR from 0.03 to 0.1 MPa/s indicate that is possible to safely reduce the duration of half-to-full refuelling by 62% increasing the APRR value from 0.03 to 0.08 MPa/s.
CO2 Emissions Reduction Measures for RO-RO Vessels on Non-Profitable Coastal Liner Passenger Transport

Reducing CO2 emissions from ships in unprofitable coastline transport using electricity and hydrogen has potential for island development to improve transport and protect biodiversity and nature. New technologies are a challenge for shipping companies and their introduction should be accompanied by a system of state aid for alternative energy sources. The energy requirements of an electric ferry for a route of up to 6 km were considered as well as the amount of hydrogen needed to generate the electricity required to charge the ferry batteries to enable a state aid scheme. For a daily ferry operation a specific fuel consumption of 60.6 g/kWh of liquid hydrogen is required in the system fuel cell with a total of 342.69 kg of hydrogen. Compared to marine diesel the use of electric ferries leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 90% including significantly lower NOx Sox and particulate matter (PM) emissions and operating costs by up to 80%.

Decarbonising UK Transport: Implications for Electricity Generation, Land Use and Policy

To ensure the UK’s net zero targets are met the transition from conventionally fueled transport to low emission alternatives is necessary. The impact from increased decarbonised electricity generation on ecosystem services (ES) and natural capital (NC) are not currently quantified with decarbonisation required to minimise impacts from climate change. This study aims to project the future electric and hydrogen energy demand between 2020 and 2050 for car bus and train to better understand the land/sea area that would be required to support energy generation. In this work predictions of the geospatial impact of renewable energy (onshore/offshore wind and solar) nuclear and fossil fuels on ES and NC were made considering generation mix number of generation installations and energy density. Results show that electric transport will require ~136599 GWh for all vehicle types analysed in 2050 much less than hydrogen transport at ~425532 GWh. We estimate that to power electric transport at least 1515 km2 will be required for solar 1672 km2 for wind and 5 km2 for nuclear. Hydrogen approximately doubles this requirement. Results provide an approximation of the future demands from the transport sector on land and sea area use indicating that a combined electric and hydrogen network will be needed to accommodate a range of socio-economic requirements. While robust assessments of ES and NC impacts are critical in future policies and planning significant reductions in energy demands through a modal shift to (low emission) public transport will be most effective in ensuring a sustainable transport future.
Alkaline Fuel cell Technology - A review

The realm of alkaline-based fuel cells has with the arrival of anionic exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) taken a great step to replace traditional liquid electrolyte alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). The following review summarises progress bottleneck issues and highlights the most recent research trends within the field. The activity of alkaline catalyst materials has greatly advanced however achieving long-term stability remains a challenge. Great AEMFC performances are reported though these are generally obtained through the employment of platinum group metals (PGMs) thus emphasising the importance of R&D related to non-PGM materials. Thorough design strategies must be utilised for all components to avoid a mismatch of electrochemical properties between electrode components. Lastly AEMFC optimisation challenges on the system-level will also have to be assessed as few application-size AEMFCs have been built and tested.
The Technical and Economic Potential of the H2@Scale Concept within the United States

The U.S. energy system is evolving as society and technologies change. Renewable electricity generation—especially from wind and solar—is growing rapidly and alternative energy sources are being developed and implemented across the residential commercial transportation and industrial sectors to take advantage of their cost security and health benefits. Systemic changes present numerous challenges to grid resiliency and energy affordability creating a need for synergistic solutions that satisfy multiple applications while yielding system-wide cost and emissions benefits. One such solution is an integrated hydrogen energy system (Figure ES-1). This is the focus of H2@Scale—a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiative led by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Technologies Office. H2@Scale brings together stakeholders to advance affordable hydrogen production transport storage and utilization in multiple energy sectors. The H2@Scale concept involves hydrogen as an energy intermediate. Hydrogen can be produced from various conventional and renewable energy sources including as a responsive load on the electric grid. Hydrogen has many current applications and many more potential applications such as energy for transportation—used directly in fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) as a feedstock for synthetic fuels and to upgrade oil and biomass—feedstock for industry (e.g. for ammonia production metals refining and other end uses) heat for industry and buildings and electricity storage. Owing to its flexibility and fungibility a hydrogen intermediate could link energy sources that have surplus availability to markets that require energy or chemical feedstocks benefiting both. This document builds upon a growing body of analyses of hydrogen as an energy intermediate by reporting the results from our initial analysis of the potential impacts of the H2@Scale vision by the mid-21st century for the 48 contiguous U.S. states. Previous estimates have been based on expert elicitation and focused on hydrogen demands. We build upon them first by estimating hydrogen’s serviceable consumption potential for possible hydrogen applications and the technical potential for producing hydrogen from various resources. We define the serviceable consumption potential as the quantity of hydrogen that would be consumed to serve the portion of the market that could be captured without considering economics (i.e. if the price of hydrogen were $0/kg over an extended period); thus it can be considered an upper bound for the size of the market. We define the technical potential as the resource potential constrained by real-world geography and system performance but not by economics. We then compare the cumulative serviceable consumption potential with the technical potential of a number of possible sources. Second we estimate economic potential: the quantity of hydrogen at an equilibrium price at which suppliers are willing to sell and consumers are willing to buy the same quantity of hydrogen. We believe this method provides a deeper understanding than was available in the previous analyses. We develop economic potentials for multiple scenarios across various market and technology-advancement assumptions.
Thoughts on the Prospects of Renewable Hydrogen

In the last two years or so there has been increasing interest in hydrogen as an energy source in Australia and around the world. Notably this is not the first time that hydrogen has caught our collective interest. Most recently the 2000s saw a substantial investment in hydrogen research development and demonstration around the world. Prior to that the oil crises of the 1970s also stimulated significant investment in hydrogen and earlier still the literature on hydrogen was not lacking. And yet the hydrogen economy is still an idea only.<br/>So what if anything might be different this time?<br/>This is an important question that we all need to ask and for which the author can only give two potential answers. First our need to make dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has become more pressing since these previous waves of interest. Second renewable energy is considerably more affordable now than it was before and it has consistently outperformed expectations in terms of cost reductions by even its strongest supporters.<br/>While this dramatic and ongoing reduction in the cost of renewables is very promising our need to achieve substantial GHG emission reductions is the crucial challenge. Moreover meeting this challenge needs to be achieved with as little adverse social and economic impact as possible.<br/>When considering what role hydrogen might play we should first think carefully about the massive scale and complexity of our global energy system and the typical prices of the major energy commodities. This provides insights into what opportunities hydrogen may have. Considering a temperate country with a small population like Australia we see that domestic natural gas and transport fuel markets are comparable to and even larger than the electricity market on an energy basis.
Potential and Challenges of Low-carbon Energy Options: Comparative Assessment of Alternative Fuels for the Transport Sector

The deployment of low-emission alternative fuels is crucial to decarbonise the transport sector. A number of alternatives like hydrogen or dimethyl ether/methanol synthesised using CO2 as feedstock for fuel production (hereafter refer to “CO2-based fuels”) have been proposed to combat climate change. However the decarbonisation potential of CO2-based fuels is under debate because CO2 is re-emitted to the atmosphere when the fuel is combusted; and the majority of hydrogen still relies on fossil resources which makes its prospects of being a low-carbon fuel dependent on its manufacturing process. First this paper investigates the relative economic and environmental performance of hydrogen (produced from conventional steam methane reforming and produced via electrolysis using renewable energy) and CO2- based fuels (dimethyl ether and methanol) considering the full carbon cycle. The results reveal that hydrogen produced from steam methane reforming is the most economical option and that hydrogen produced via electrolysis using renewables has the best environmental profile. Whereas the idea of CO2-based fuels has recently gained much interest it has for the foreseeable future rather limited practical relevance since there is no favourable combination of cost and environmental performance. This will only change in the long run and requires that CO2 is of non-fossil origin i.e. from biomass combustion or captured from air. Second this paper address unresolved methodological issues in the assessment of CO2-based fuels such as the possible allocation of emissions to the different sectors involved. The outcomes indicate that implementing different allocation approaches substantially influences the carbon footprint of CO2-based fuels. To avoid allocation issues expanding the boundaries including the entire system and is therefore recommended.
Precooling Temperature Relaxation Technology in Hydrogen Refueling for Fuel-Cell Vehicles

The dissemination of fuel-cell vehicles requires cost reduction of hydrogen refueling stations. The temperature of the supplied hydrogen has currently been cooled to approximately 40 C. This has led to larger equipment and increased electric power consumption. This study achieves a relaxation of the precooling temperature to the 20 C level while maintaining the refueling time. (1) Adoption of an MC formula that can flexibly change the refueling rate according to the precooling temperature. (2) Measurement of thermal capacity of refueling system parts and re-evaluation. Selection from multiple refueling control maps according to the dispenser design (Mathison et al. 2015). (3) Calculation of the effective thermal capacity and reselection of the map in real time when the line is cooled from refueling of the previous vehicle (Mathison and Handa 2015). (4) Addition of maps in which the minimum assumed pressures are 10 and 15 MPa. The new method is named MC Multi Map
Wind Power to Methanol: Renewable Methanol Production Using Electricity, Electrolysis of Water and CO2 Air Capture

A 100 MW stand-alone wind power to methanol process has been evaluated to determine the capital requirement and power to methanol efficiency. Power available for electrolysis determines the amount of hydrogen produced. The stoichiometric amount of CO2– required for the methanol synthesis – is produced using direct air capture. Integration of utilities for CO2 air capture hydrogen production from co-harvested water and methanol synthesis is incorporated and capital costs for all process steps are estimated. Power to methanol efficiency is determined to be around 50%. The cost of methanol is around 300€ ton−1 excluding and 800€ ton−1 including wind turbine capital cost. Excluding 300 M€ investment cost for 100 MW of wind turbines total plant capital cost is around 200 M€. About 45% of the capital cost is reserved for the electrolysers 50% for the CO2 air capture installation and 5% for the methanol synthesis system. The conceptual design and evaluation shows that renewable methanol produced from air captured CO2 water and renewable electricity is becoming a realistic option at reasonable costs of 750–800 € ton−1.
Performance Analysis of a Flexi-Fuel Turbine-Combined Free-Piston Engine Generator

The turbine-combined free-piston engine generator (TCFPEG) is a hybrid machine generating both mechanical work from the gas turbine and electricity from the linear electric generator for battery charging. In the present study the system performance of the designed TCFPEG system is predicted using a validated numerical model. A parametric analysis is undertaken based on the influence of the engine load valve timing the number of linear generators adopted and different fuels on the system performance. It is found that when linear electric generators are connected with the free-piston gas turbine the bottom dead centre the peak piston velocity and engine operation frequency are all reduced. Very minimal difference on the in-cylinder pressure and the compressor pressure is observed while the peak pressure in the bounce chamber is reduced. When coupled with a linear electric generator the system efficiency can be improved to nearly 50% by optimising engine load and the number of the linear generators adopted in the TCFPEG system. The system is able to be operated with different fuels as the piston is not limited by a mechanical system; the output power and system efficiency are highest when hydrogen is used as the fuel.
Review on Blended Hydrogen-fuel Internal Combustion Engines: A Case Study for China

Under the dual pressure of energy conservation and environmental protection the internal combustion engine industry is facing huge challenges and it is imperative to find new clean energy. Hydrogen energy is expected to replace traditional fossil fuels as an excellent fuel for internal combustion engines because of its clean continuous regeneration and good combustion performance. This review article focuses on the research and development of blended hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines in China since the beginning of this century. The main achievements gained by Chinese researchers in performing research on the effects of the addition of hydrogen into engines which predominantly include many types of hydrogen-blended engines such as gasoline diesel natural gas and alcohol engines rotary engines are discussed and analyzed in these areas of the engine’s performance and the combustion and emission characteristics etc. The merits and demerits of blended hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines could be concluded and summarized after discussion. Finally the development trend and direction of exploration on hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines could also be forecasted for relevant researchers.
Techno-Economic Analysis of the Hybrid Solar PV/H/Fuel Cell Based Supply Scheme for Green Mobile Communication

Extensive simulation is carried out using a hybrid optimization model for electric renewables (HOMER) optimization tool to evaluate the optimal size energy production total production cost per unit energy production cost and emission of carbon footprints subject to different relevant system parameters. In addition the throughput and energy efficiency performance of the wireless network is critically evaluated with the help of MATLAB-based Monte-Carlo simulations taking multipath fading system bandwidth transmission power and inter-cell interference (ICI) into consideration. Results show that a more stable and reliable green solution for the telecommunications sector will be the macro cellular basis stations driven by the recommended hybrid supply system. The hybrid supply system has around 17% surplus electricity and 48.1 h backup capacity that increases the system reliability by maintaining a better quality of service (QoS). To end the outcomes of the suggested system are compared with the other supply scheme and the previously published research work for justifying the validity of the proposed system.
Developing New Understanding of Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Via In-situ Techniques: A Review on Recent Progress

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising technology for solar hydrogen production to build a sustainable renewable and clean energy economy. Given the complexity of the PEC water splitting processes it is important to note that developing in-situ techniques for studying PEC water splitting presents a formidable challenge. This review is aimed at highlighting advantages and disadvantages of each technique while offering a pathway of potentially combining several techniques to address different aspects of interfacial processes in PEC water splitting. We reviewed recent progress in various techniques and approaches utilized to study PEC water splitting focusing on spectroscopic and scanning-probe methods.
Preparation, Performance and Challenges of Catalyst Layer for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

In this paper the composition function and structure of the catalyst layer (CL) of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) are summarized. The hydrogen reduction reaction (HOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) processes and their mechanisms and the main interfaces of CL (PEM|CL and CL|MPL) are described briefly. The process of mass transfer (hydrogen oxygen and water) proton and electron transfer in MEA are described in detail including their influencing factors. The failure mechanism of CL (Pt particles CL crack CL flooding etc.) and the degradation mechanism of the main components in CL are studied. On the basis of the existing problems a structure optimization strategy for a high‐performance CL is proposed. The commonly used preparation processes of CL are introduced. Based on the classical drying theory the drying process of a wet CL is explained. Finally the research direction and future challenges of CL are pointed out hoping to provide a new perspective for the design and selection of CL materials and preparation equipment.
Thermal Management System Architecture for Hydrogen-Powered Propulsion Technologies: Practices, Thematic Clusters, System Architectures, Future Challenges, and Opportunities

The thermal management system architectures proposed for hydrogen-powered propulsion technologies are critically reviewed and assessed. The objectives of this paper are to determine the system-level shortcomings and to recognise the remaining challenges and research questions that need to be sorted out in order to enable this disruptive technology to be utilised by propulsion system manufacturers. Initially a scientometrics based co-word analysis is conducted to identify the milestones for the literature review as well as to illustrate the connections between relevant ideas by considering the patterns of co-occurrence of words. Then a historical review of the proposed embodiments and concepts dating back to 1995 is followed. Next feasible thermal management system architectures are classified into three distinct classes and its components are discussed. These architectures are further extended and adapted for the application of hydrogen-powered fuel cells in aviation. This climaxes with the assessment of the available evidence to verify the reasons why no hydrogen-powered propulsion thermal management system architecture has yet been approved for commercial production. Finally the remaining research challenges are identified through a systematic examination of the critical areas in thermal management systems for application to hydrogen-powered air vehicles’ engine cooling. The proposed solutions are discussed from weight cost complexity and impact points of view by a system-level assessment of the critical areas in the field.
The Role of Natural Gas and its Infrastructure in Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Improving Regional Air Quality, and Renewable Resource Integration

The pursuit of future energy systems that can meet electricity demands while supporting the attainment of societal environment goals including mitigating climate change and reducing pollution in the air has led to questions regarding the viability of continued use of natural gas. Natural gas use particularly for electricity generation has increased in recent years due to enhanced resource availability from non-traditional reserves and pressure to reduce greenhouse gasses (GHG) from higher-emitting sources including coal generation. While lower than coal emissions current natural gas power generation strategies primarily utilize combustion with higher emissions of GHG and criteria pollutants than other low-carbon generation options including renewable resources. Furthermore emissions from life cycle stages of natural gas production and distribution can have additional detrimental GHG and air quality (AQ) impacts. On the other hand natural gas power generation can play an important role in supporting renewable resource integration by (1) providing essential load balancing services and (2) supporting the use of gaseous renewable fuels through the existing infrastructure of the natural gas system. Additionally advanced technologies and strategies including fuel cells and combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) systems can facilitate natural gas generation with low emissions and high efficiencies. Thus the role of natural gas generation in the context of GHG mitigation and AQ improvement is complex and multi-faceted requiring consideration of more than simple quantification of total or net emissions. If appropriately constructed and managed natural gas generation could support and advance sustainable and renewable energy. In this paper a review of the literature regarding emissions from natural gas with a focus on power generation is conducted and discussed in the context of GHG and AQ impacts. In addition a pathway forward is proposed for natural gas generation and infrastructure to maximize environmental benefits and support renewable resources in the attainment of emission reductions.
Expectations as a Key to Understanding Actor Strategies in the Field of Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Vehicles

Due to its environmental impact the mobility system is increasingly under pressure. The challenges to cope with climate change air quality depleting fossil resources imply the need for a transition of the current mobility system towards a more sustainable one. Expectations and visions have been identified as crucial in the guidance of such transitions and more specifically of actor strategies. Still it remained unclear why the actors involved in transition activities appear to change their strategies frequently and suddenly. The empirical analysis of the expectations and strategies of three actors in the field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology indicates that changing actor strategies can be explained by rather volatile expectations related to different levels. Our case studies of the strategies of two large car manufacturers and the German government demonstrate that the car manufacturers refer strongly to expectations about the future regime while expectations related to the socio-technical landscape level appear to be crucial for the strategy of the German government.
Facile Synthesis of Palladium Phosphide Electrocatalysts and their Activity for the Hydrogen Oxidation, Hydrogen Evolutions, Oxygen Reduction and Formic Acid Oxidation Reactions

We demonstrate a new approach for producing highly dispersed supported metal phosphide powders with small particle size improved stability and increased electrocatalytic activity towards some useful reactions. The approach involves a one-step conversion of metal supported on high surface area carbon to the metal phosphide utilising a very simple and scalable synthetic process. We use this approach to produce PdP2 and Pd5P2 particles dispersed on carbon with a particle size of 4.5–5.5 nm by converting a commercially available Pd/C powder. The metal phosphide catalysts were tested for the oxygen reduction hydrogen oxidation and evolution and formic acid oxidation reactions. Compared to the unconverted Pd/C material we find that alloying the P at different levels shifts oxide formation on the Pd to higher potentials leading to greater stability during cycling studies (20% more ECSA retained 5k cycles) and in thermal treatment under air. Hydrogen absorption within the PdP2 and Pd5P2 particles is enhanced. The phosphides compare favourably to the most active catalysts reported to date for formic acid oxidation especially PdP2 and there is a significant decrease in poisoning of the surface compared to Pd alone. The mechanistic changes in the reactions studied are rationalised in terms of increased water activation on the surface phosphorus atoms of the catalyst. One of the catalysts PdP2/C is tested in a fuel cell as anode and cathode catalyst and shows good performance.
A Novel Remaining Useful Life Prediction Method for Hydrogen Fuel Cells Based on the Gated Recurrent Unit Neural Network

The remaining useful life (RUL) prediction for hydrogen fuel cells is an important part of its prognostics and health management (PHM). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are proven to be very effective in RUL prediction as they do not need to understand the failure mechanisms behind hydrogen fuel cells. A novel RUL prediction method for hydrogen fuel cells based on the gated recurrent unit ANN is proposed in this paper. Firstly the data were preprocessed to remove outliers and noises. Secondly the performance of different neural networks is compared including the back propagation neural network (BPNN) the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) network. According to our proposed method based on GRU the root mean square error was 0.0026 the mean absolute percentage error was 0.0038 and the coefficient of determination was 0.9891 for the data from the challenge datasets provided by FCLAB Research Federation when the prediction starting point was 650 h. Compared with the other RUL prediction methods based on the BPNN and the LSTM our prediction method is better in both prediction accuracy and convergence rate.
Recent Developments in High-Performance Nafion Membranes for Hydrogen Fuel Cells Applications

As a promising alternative to petroleum fossil energy polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell has drawn considerable attention due to its low pollution emission high energy density portability and long operation times. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) like Nafion plays an essential role as the core of fuel cell. A good PEM must have satisfactory performance such as high proton conductivity excellent mechanical strength electrochemical stability and suitable for making membrane electrode assemblies (MEA). However performance degradation and high permeability remain the main shortcomings of Nafion. Therefore the development of a new PEM with better performance in some special conditions is greatly desired. In this review we aim to summarize the latest achievements in improving the Nafion performance that works well under elevated temperature or methanol-fueled systems. The methods described in this article can be divided into some categories utilizing hydrophilic inorganic material metal-organic frameworks nanocomposites and ionic liquids. In addition the mechanism of proton conduction in Nafion membranes is discussed. These composite membranes exhibit some desirable characteristics but the development is still at an early stage. In the future revolutionary approaches are needed to accelerate the application of fuel cells and promote the renewal of energy structure.
Optimal Planning of Hybrid Electric-hydrogen Energy Storage Systems via Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization

In recent years hydrogen is rapidly developing because it is environmentally friendly and sustainable. In this case hydrogen energy storage systems (HESSs) can be widely used in the distribution network. The application of hybrid electric-hydrogen energy storage systems can solve the adverse effects caused by renewable energy access to the distribution network. In order to ensure the rationality and effectiveness of energy storage systems (ESSs) configuration economic indicators of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and hydrogen energy storage systems power loss and voltage fluctuation are chosen as the fitness function in this paper. Meanwhile multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) is used to solve Pareto non-dominated set of energy storage systems’ optimal configuration scheme in which the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) based on information entropy weight (IEW) is used select the optimal solution in Pareto non-dominated solution set. Based on the extended IEEE-33 system and IEEE-69 system the rationality of energy storage systems configuration scheme under 20% and 35% renewable energy penetration rate is analyzed. The simulation results show that the power loss can be reduced by 7.9%–22.8% and the voltage fluctuation can be reduced by 40.0%–71% when the renewable energy penetration rate is 20% and 35% respectively in IEEE-33 and 69 nodes systems. Therefore it can be concluded that the locations and capacities of energy storage systems obtained by multi-objective particle swarm optimization can improve the distribution network stability and economy after accessing renewable generation.
A Quantitative Study of Policy-driven Changes and Forecasts in the Development of the Hydrogen Transportation Industry

Through data mining and analysis of the word frequency and occurrence position of industrial policy keywords the main policy parameters affecting industrial development are determined and the functional relationship between industrial policy and industrial development is obtained through multi-parameter non-linear regression: Yit−1 (y1 y2 y3 y4 y5) = β1it X1 + β2it ln X2 + β3it ln X3 + β4it X1it ∗ ln X3 + εit . The time series function of the industrial development index: Y (t) = 0.174 ∗ e (0.256∗t) is established and the industrial development under the influence of next year’s policy is predicted. It is concluded from the mathematical expression of the statistical model that there is a certain coupling effect between different policies and that industrial development is influenced by the joint effect on the parent and sub-industries. This ultimately proves that there is a clear correlation between policy and industry development.
Modeling the Effects of Implementation of Alternative Ways of Vehicle Powering

The trend to replace traditional fossil fuel vehicles is becoming increasingly apparent. The replacement concerns the use of pure biofuels or in blends with traditional fuels the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel and above all the introduction of electric propulsion. The introduction of new types of vehicle propulsion affects the demand for specific fuels the needs for new infrastructure or the nature of the emissions to the environment generated by fuel production and vehicle operation. The article presents a mathematical model using the difference of two logistic functions the first of which describes the development of the production of a specific type of vehicle and the second the withdrawal of this type of vehicle from traffic after its use. The model makes it possible to forecast both the number of vehicles of each generation as a function of time as well as changes in energy demand from various sources and changes in exhaust emissions. The results of the numerical simulation show replacing classic vehicles with alternative vehicles increases the total energy demand if the generation of the next generation occurs earlier than the decay of the previous generation of vehicles and may decrease in the case of overlapping or delays in the creation of new vehicles compared to the course of the decay function of the previous generation. For electric vehicles carbon dioxide emissions are largely dependent on the emissions from electricity generation. The proposed model can be used to forecast technology development variants as well as analyze the current situation based on the approximation of real data from Vehicle Registration Offices.
Reduction of Maritime GHG Emissions and the Potential Role of E-fuels

Maritime transport accounts for around 3% of global anthropogenic Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Well-to-Wake) and these emissions must be reduced with at least 50% in absolute values by 2050 to contribute to the ambitions of the Paris agreement (2015). Zero carbon fuels made from renewable sources (hydro wind or solar) are by many seen as the most promising option to deliver the desired GHG reductions. For the maritime sector these fuels come in two forms: First as E-Hydrogen or E-Ammonia; Second as Hydrocarbon E-fuels in the form of E-Diesel E-LNG or E-Methanol. We evaluate emissions energy use and cost for E-fuels and find that the most robust path to these fuels is through dual-fuel engines and systems to ensure flexibility in fuel selection to prepare for growing supplies and lower risks. The GHG reduction potential of E-fuels depends entirely on abundant renewable electricity.
Incorporating Homeowners' Preferences of Heating Technologies in the UK TIMES Model

Hot water and space heating account for about 80% of total energy consumption in the residential sector in the UK. It is thus crucial to decarbonise residential heating to achieve UK's 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets. However the decarbonisation transitions determined by most techno-economic energy system models might be too optimistic or misleading for relying on cost minimisation alone and not considering households' preferences for different heating technologies. This study thus proposes a novel framework to incorporate heterogeneous households' (HHs) preferences into the modelling process of the UK TIMES model. The incorporated preferences for HHs are based on a nationwide survey on homeowners' choices of heating technologies. Preference constraints are then applied to regulate the HHs' choices of heating technologies to reflect the survey results. Consequently compared to the least cost transition pathway the preference-driven pathway adopts heating technologies gradually without abrupt increases of market shares. Heat pumps and electric heaters are deployed much less than in the cost optimal result. Extensive district heating using low-carbon fuels and conservation measures should thus be deployed to provide flexibility for decarbonisation. The proposed framework can also incorporate preferences for other energy consumption technologies and be applied to other linear programming based energy system models.
Hydrogen Double Compression-expansion Engine (H2DCEE): A Sustainable Internal Combustion Engine with 60%+ Brake Thermal Efficiency Potential at 45 Bar BMEP

Hydrogen (H2) internal combustion engines may represent cost-effective and quick solution to the issue of the road transport decarbonization. A major factor limiting their competitiveness relative to fuel cells (FC) is the lower efficiency. The present work aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a H2 engine with FC-like 60%+ brake thermal efficiency (BTE) levels using a double compression-expansion engine (DCEE) concept combined with a high pressure direct injection (HPDI) nonpremixed H2 combustion. Experimentally validated 3D CFD simulations are combined with 1D GT-Power simulations to make the predictions. Several modifications to the system design and operating conditions are systematically implemented and their effects are investigated. Addition of a catalytic burner in the combustor exhaust insulation of the expander dehumidification of the EGR and removal of the intercooling yielded 1.5 1.3 0.8 and 0.5%-point BTE improvements respectively. Raising the peak pressure to 300 bar via a larger compressor further improved the BTE by 1.8%-points but should be accompanied with a higher injector-cylinder differential pressure. The λ of ~1.4 gave the optimum tradeoff between the mechanical and combustion efficiencies. A peak BTE of 60.3% is reported with H2DCEE which is ~5%-points higher than the best diesel-fueled DCEE alternative.
Bridging the Maritime-Hydrogen Cost-Gap: Real Options Analysis of Policy Alternatives

Alternative and especially renewable marine fuels are needed to reduce the environmental and climate impacts of the shipping sector. This paper investigates the business case for hydrogen as an alternative fuel in a new-built vessel utilizing fuel cells and liquefied hydrogen. A real option approach is used to model the optimal time and costs for investment as well as the value of deferring an investment as a result of uncertainty. This model is then used to assess the impact of a carbon tax on a ship owner’s investment decision. A low carbon tax results in ship owners deferring investments which then slows the uptake of the technology. We recommend that policymakers set a high carbon tax at an early stage in order to help hydrogen compete with fossil fuels. A clear and timely policy design promotes further investments and accelerates the uptake of new technologies that can fulfill decarbonization targets.
Net Zero in the Heating Sector: Technological Options and Environmental Sustainability from Now to 2050

Heating and hot water within buildings account for almost a quarter of global energy consumption. Approximately 90% of this heat is derived directly from the combustion of fossil fuels primarily natural gas leading to the unabated emission of carbon dioxide. This paper assesses the environmental sustainability of a range of heating technologies and scenarios on a life cycle basis. The major technologies considered are natural gas boilers air source heat pumps hydrogen boilers and direct electric heaters. The scenarios use the UK as an example due to its status as a major economy with a legally-binding net-zero carbon target for 2050; they consider plausible future electricity and natural gas mixes including the potential growth of domestic shale gas. The environmental impacts are estimated using ReCiPe 2016. Current gas boilers have a climate change impact of 220 g CO2 eq./kWh of heat which could fall to 64 g CO2 eq./kWh for boilers fuelled by hydrogen derived from natural gas with carbon capture. Heat from electric air source heat pumps or hydrogen from electrolysis can achieve net zero with a decarbonised electricity mix but electrolysis has the highest energy demand of all options which leads to the highest impacts across 17 of the 19 categories. Despite their high carbon emissions gas boilers remain the lowest impact option across 12 categories as they avoid the impacts related to electricity generation including metal depletion toxicities and eutrophication. By 2050 the best performing scenario sees the climate change impact of the heating mix fall by 95%; this is achieved by prioritising electric air source heat pumps without hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants alongside demand reduction. The results show that if infrastructure and financial challenges can be overcome there are several viable decarbonisation strategies for heating with heat pumps offering the most environmentally sustainable option of those considered here. However increased renewable electricity demand may worsen some environmental impacts compared to natural gas boilers.
Systematic Overview of Newly Available Technologies in the Green Maritime Sector

The application of newly available technologies in the green maritime sector is difficult due to conflicting requirements and the inter-relation of different ecological technological and economical parameters. The governments incentivize radical reductions in harmful emissions as an overall priority. If the politics do not change the continuous implementation of stricter government regulations for reducing emissions will eventually result in the mandatory use of what we currently consider alternative fuels. Immediate application of radically different strategies would significantly increase the economic costs of maritime transport thus jeopardizing its greatest benefit: the transport of massive quantities of freight at the lowest cost. Increased maritime transport costs would immediately disrupt the global economy as seen recently during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason the industry has shifted towards a gradual decrease in emissions through the implementation of “better” transitional solutions until alternative fuels eventually become low-cost fuels. Since this topic is very broad and interdisciplinary our systematic overview gives insight into the state-of-the-art available technologies in green maritime transport with a focus on the following subjects: (i) alternative fuels; (ii) hybrid propulsion systems and hydrogen technologies; (iii) the benefits of digitalization in the maritime sector aimed at increasing vessel efficiency; (iv) hull drag reduction technologies; and (v) carbon capture technologies. This paper outlines the challenges advantages and disadvantages of their implementation. The results of this analysis elucidate the current technologies’ readiness levels and their expected development over the coming years.
Hydrogen Station Location Planning via Geodesign in Connecticut: Comparing Optimization Models and Structured Stakeholder Collaboration

Geodesign is a participatory planning approach in which stakeholders use geographic information systems to develop and vet alternative design scenarios in a collaborative and iterative process. This study is based on a 2019 geodesign workshop in which 17 participants from industry government university and non-profit sectors worked together to design an initial network of hydrogen refueling stations in the Hartford Connecticut metropolitan area. The workshop involved identifying relevant location factors rapid prototyping of station network designs and developing consensus on a final design. The geodesign platform which was designed specifically for facility location problems enables breakout groups to add or delete stations with a simple point-and-click operation view and overlay different map layers compute performance metrics and compare their designs to those of other groups. By using these sources of information and their own expert local knowledge participants recommended six locations for hydrogen refueling stations over two distinct phases of station installation. We quantitatively and qualitatively compared workshop recommendations to solutions of three optimal station location models that have been used to recommend station locations which minimize travel times from stations to population and traffic or maximize trips that can be refueled on origin–destination routes. In a post-workshop survey participants rated the workshop highly for facilitating mutual understanding and information sharing among stakeholders. To our knowledge this workshop represents the first application of geodesign for hydrogen refueling station infrastructure planning.
The Role of Synthetic Fuels for a Carbon Neutral Economy

Fossil fuels depletion and increasing environmental impacts arising from their use call for seeking growing supplies from renewable and nuclear primary energy sources. However it is necessary to simultaneously attend to both the electrical power needs and the specificities of the transport and industrial sector requirements. A major question posed by the shift away from traditional fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources lies in matching the power demand with the daily and seasonal oscillation and the intermittency of these natural energy fluxes. Huge energy storage requirements become necessary or otherwise the decline of the power factor of both the renewable and conventional generation would mean loss of resources. On the other hand liquid and gaseous fuels for which there is vast storage and distribution capacity available appear essential to supply the transport sector for a very long time ahead besides their domestic and industrial roles. Within this context the present assessment suggests that proven technologies and sound tested principles are available to develop an integrated energy system relying on synthetic fuels. These would incorporate carbon capture and utilization in a closed carbon cycle progressively relying mostly on solar and/or nuclear primary sources providing both electric power and gaseous/liquid hydrocarbon fuels having ample storage capacity and able to timely satisfy all forms of energy demand. The principles and means are already available to develop a carbon-neutral synthetic fuel economy.
A Review of Hydrogen Direct Injection for Internal Combustion Engines: Towards Carbon-Free Combustion

A paradigm shift towards the utilization of carbon-neutral and low emission fuels is necessary in the internal combustion engine industry to fulfil the carbon emission goals and future legislation requirements in many countries. Hydrogen as an energy carrier and main fuel is a promising option due to its carbon-free content wide flammability limits and fast flame speeds. For spark-ignited internal combustion engines utilizing hydrogen direct injection has been proven to achieve high engine power output and efficiency with low emissions. This review provides an overview of the current development and understanding of hydrogen use in internal combustion engines that are usually spark ignited under various engine operation modes and strategies. This paper then proceeds to outline the gaps in current knowledge along with better potential strategies and technologies that could be adopted for hydrogen direct injection in the context of compression-ignition engine applications—topics that have not yet been extensively explored to date with hydrogen but have shown advantages with compressed natural gas.
Hydrogen as an Energy Vector to Optimize the Energy Exploitation of a Self-consumption Solar Photovoltaic Facility in a Dwelling House

Solar photovoltaic (PV) plants coupled with storage for domestic self-consumption purposes seem to be a promising technology in the next years as PV costs have decreased significantly and national regulations in many countries promote their installation in order to relax the energy requirements of power distribution grids. However electrochemical storage systems are still unaffordable for many domestic users and thus the advantages of self-consumption PV systems are reduced. Thus in this work the adoption of hydrogen systems as energy vectors between a PV plant and the energy user is proposed. As a preliminary study in this work the design of a PV and hydrogen-production self-consumption plant for a single dwelling is described. Then a technical and economic feasibility study conducted by modeling the facility within the Homer Energy Pro energy systems analysis tool is reported. The proposed system will be able to provide back not only electrical energy but also thermal energy through a fuel cell or refined water covering the fundamental needs of the householders (electricity heat or cooling and water). Results show that although the proposed system effectively increases the energy local use of the PV production and reduces significantly the energy injections or demands into/from the power grid avoiding power grid congestions and increasing the nano-grid resilience operation and maintenance costs may reduce its economic attractiveness for a single dwelling.
The Maritime Sector and Its Problematic Decarbonization: A Systematic Review of the Contribution of Alternative Fuels

The present study seeks to select the most important articles and reviews from the Web of Science database that approached alternative fuels towards the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Through a systematic review methodology a combination of keywords and manual refining found a contribution of 103 works worldwide the European continent accounting for 57% of all publications. Twenty-two types of fuels were cited by the authors liquefied natural gas (LNG) hydrogen and biodiesel contributing to 49% of the mentions. Greenhouse gases sulfur oxide nitrogen oxide and particulate matter reductions are some of the main advantages of cleaner sources if used by the vessels. Nevertheless there is a lack of practical research on new standards engine performance cost and regulations from the academy to direct more stakeholders towards low carbon intensity in the shipping sector.
Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Demonstrations in Turkey

As a non-profit UNIDO project funded 100% by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources International Center for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (ICHET) has been implementing pilot demonstration projects providing applied R&D funding; organizing workshops education and training activities in Turkey and other developing countries to show potential benefits of “hydrogen and fuel cell systems”. It is important to leap-frog developing countries to hydrogen for eliminating detrimental effect of fossil fuels. To achieve its mission ICHET implements pilot demonstration projects in combination with renewable energy systems to encourage local industry to manufacture similar systems and explore market potential for such use. Support is provided to selected industrial partners in Turkey for developing products or for early demonstrations including a fuel cell forklift a fuel cell boat a fuel cell passenger cart with PV integrated roof-top renewable integrated mobile house fuel cell based UPS installations. As more and more systems demonstrated public awareness on applications of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies will increase and viability of such systems will be realized to change public perception.
PEFC System Reactant Gas Supply Management and Anode Purging Strategy: An Experimental Approach

In this report a 5 kW PEFC system running on dry hydrogen with an appropriately sized Balance of Plant (BoP) was used to conduct experimental studies and analyses of gas supply subsystems. The improper rating and use of BoP components has been found to increase parasitic loads which consequently has a direct effect on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) system efficiency. Therefore the minimisation of parasitic loads while maintaining desired performance is crucial. Nevertheless little has been found in the literature regarding experimental work on large stacks and BoP with the majority of papers concentrating on modelling. A particular interest of our study was the anode side of the fuel cell. Additionally the rationale behind the use of hydrogen anode recirculation was scrutinised and a novel anode purging strategy was developed and implemented. Through experimental modelling the use of cathode air blower was minimised since it was found to be the biggest contributor to the parasitic loads.
Strategies for the Sampling of Hydrogen at Refuelling Stations for Purity Assessment

Hydrogen delivered at hydrogen refuelling station must be compliant with requirements stated in different standards which require specialized sampling device and personnel to operate it. Currently different strategies are implemented in different parts of the world and these strategies have already been used to perform 100s of hydrogen fuel sampling in USA EU and Japan. However these strategies have never been compared on a large systematic study. The purpose of this paper is to describe and compare the different strategies for sampling hydrogen at the nozzle and summarize the key aspects of all the existing hydrogen fuel sampling including discussion on material compatibility with the impurities that must be assessed. This review highlights the fact it is currently difficult to evaluate the impact or the difference these strategies would have on the hydrogen fuel quality assessment. Therefore comparative sampling studies are required to evaluate the equivalence between the different sampling strategies. This is the first step to support the standardization of hydrogen fuel sampling and to identify future research and development area for hydrogen fuel sampling.
Recent Development of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies: A Review

Hydrogen has emerged as a new energy vector beyond its usual role as an industrial feedstock primarily for the production of ammonia methanol and petroleum refining. In addition to environmental sustainability issues energy-scarce developed countries such as Japan and Korea are also facing an energy security issue and hydrogen or hydrogen carriers such as ammonia and methylcyclohexane seem to be options to address these long-term energy availability issues. China has been eagerly developing renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure to meet their sustainability goals and the growing energy demand. In this review we focus on hydrogen electrification through proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) which are widely believed to be commercially suitable for automotive applications particularly for vehicles requiring minimal hydrogen infrastructure support such as fleets of taxies buses and logistic vehicles. This review covers all the key components of PEMFCs thermal and water management and related characterization techniques. A special consideration of PEMFCs in automotive applications is the highlight of this work leading to the infrastructure development for hydrogen generation storage and transportation. Furthermore national strategies toward the use of hydrogen are reviewed thereby setting the rationale for the hydrogen economy.
Climate Change Impacts of E-fuels for Aviation in Europe Under Present-day Conditions and Future Policy Scenarios

‘E-fuels’ or ‘synthetic fuels’ are hydrocarbon fuels synthesized from hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) where H2 can be produced via electrolysis of water or steam reforming of natural gas and CO2 is captured from the combustion of a fossil or biogenic source or directly from the atmosphere. E-fuels are drop-in substitutes for fossil fuels but their climate change mitigation benefits are largely unclear. This study evaluates the climate change impacts of e-fuels for aviation by combining different sources of CO2 and H2 up to 2050 under two contrasting policy scenarios. The analysis includes different climate metrics and the effects of near-term climate forcers which are particularly relevant for the aviation sector. Results are produced for European average conditions and for Poland and Norway two countries with high and low emission intensity from their electricity production mix. E-fuels can either have higher or lower climate change impacts than fossil fuels depending on multiple factors such as in order of importance the electricity mix the origin of CO2 the technology for H2 production and the electrolyzer efficiency. The climate benefits are generally higher for e-fuels produced from CO2 of biogenic origin while e-fuels produced from CO2 from direct air capture or fossil fuel combustion require countries with clean electricity to outperform fossil fuels. Synthetic fuels produced from H2 derived from natural gas have higher impacts than fossil fuels even when coupled with carbon capture and storage if CO2 is sourced from fossil fuels or the atmosphere. Climate change impacts of e-fuels improve in the future and they can all achieve considerable climate change mitigation in 2050 relative to fossil jet fuel provided that strict climate policy measures are implemented to decarbonize the electricity sector. Under reduced policy efforts future climate impacts in 2050 of e-fuels from atmospheric or fossil CO2 are still higher than those of fossil jet fuels with an average European electricity mix. This study shows the conditions to maximize the climate change mitigation benefits of e-fuels which essentially depend on progressive decarbonization of the electricity sector and on reduced use of CO2 sourced from fossil fuels.
Spatially-resolved Analysis of the Challenges and Opportunities of Power-to-Gas (PtG) in Baden-Württemberg until 2040

The increasing penetration of renewable energies will make new storage technologies indispensable in the future. Power-to-Gas (PtG) is one long-term storage technology that exploits the existing gas infrastructure. However this technology faces technical economic environmental challenges and questions. This contribution presents the final results of a large research project which attempted to address and provide answers to some of these questions for Baden-Württemberg (south west Germany). Three energy scenarios out to 2040 were defined one oriented towards the Integrated Energy and Climate Protection Concept of the Federal State Government and two alternatives. Timely-resolved load profiles for gas and electricity for 2015 2020 2030 and 2040 have been generated at the level of individual municipalities. The profiles include residential and industrial electrical load gas required for heating (conventional and current-controlled CHP) as well as gas and electricity demand for mobility. The installation of rooftop PV-plants and wind power plants is projected based on bottom up cost-potential analyses which account for some social acceptance barriers. Residential load profiles are derived for each municipality. In times with negative residual load the PtG technology could be used to convert electricity into hydrogen or methane. The detailed analysis of four structurally-different model regions delivered quite different results. While in large cities no negative residual load is likely due to the continuously high demand and strong networks rural areas with high potentials for renewables could encounter several thousand hours of negative residual load. A cost-effective operation of PtG would only be possible under favorable conditions including high full load hours a strong reduction in costs and a technical improvement of efficiency. Whilst these conditions are not expected to appear in the short to mid-term but may occur in the long term in energy systems with very high shares of renewable energy sources
Multi-port Coordination: Unlocking Flexibility and Hydrogen Opportunities in Green Energy Networks

Seaports are responsible for consuming a large amount of energy and producing a sizeable amount of environmental emissions. However optimal coordination and cooperation present an opportunity to transform this challenge into an opportunity by enabling flexibility in their generation and load units. This paper introduces a coordination framework for exploiting flexibility across multiple ports. The proposed method fosters cooperation between ports in achieving lower environmental emissions while leveraging flexibility to increase their revenue. This platform allows ports to participate in providing flexibility for the energy grid through the introduction of a green port-to-grid concept while optimising their cooperation. Furthermore the proximity to offshore wind farms is considered an opportunity for the ports to investigate their role in harnessing green hydrogen. The proposed method explores the hydrogen storage capability of ports as an opportunity for increasing the techno-economic benefits particularly through coupling them with offshore wind farms. Compared to existing literature the proposed method enjoys a comprehensive logistics-electric model for the ports a novel coordination framework for multi-port flexibility and the potentials of hydrogen storage for the ports. These unique features position this paper a valuable reference for research and industry by demonstrating realistic cooperation among ports in the energy network. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed port flexibility coordination from both environmental and economic perspectives.
Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles: A Review

Motor vehicles are the backbone of global transport. In recent years due to the rising costs of fossil fuels and increasing concerns about their negative impact on the natural environment the development of low-emission power supply systems for vehicles has been observed. In order to create a stable and safe global transport system an important issue seems to be the diversification of propulsion systems for vehicles which can be achieved through the simultaneous development of conventional internal combustion vehicles electric vehicles (both battery and fuel cell powered) as well as combustion hydrogen-powered vehicles. This publication presents an overview of commercial vehicles (available on the market) powered by internal combustion hydrogen engines. The work focuses on presenting the development of technology from the point of view of introducing ready-made hydrogen-powered vehicles to the market or technical solutions enabling the use of hydrogen mixtures in internal combustion engines. The study covers the history of the technology dedicated hydrogen and bi-fuel vehicles and vehicles with an engine powered by a mixture of conventional fuels and hydrogen. It presents basic technology parameters and solutions introduced by leading vehicle manufacturers in the vehicle market.
Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emission Assessment for Using Alternative Marine Fuels: A Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Case Study

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set decarbonisation goals for the shipping industry. As a result shipowners and operators are preparing to use low- or zero-carbon alternative fuels. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission performances are fundamental for choosing suitable marine fuels. However the current regulations adopt tank-to-wake (TTW) emission assessment methods that could misrepresent the total climate impacts of fuels. To better understand the well-to-wake (WTW) GHG emission performances this work applied the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to a very large crude carrier (VLCC) sailing between the Middle East and China to investigate the emissions. The life cycle GHG emission impacts of using alternative fuels including liquified natural gas (LNG) methanol and ammonia were evaluated and compared with using marine gas oil (MGO). The bunkering site of the VLCC was in Zhoushan port China. The MGO and LNG were imported from overseas while methanol and ammonia were produced in China. Four production pathways for methanol and three production pathways for ammonia were examined. The results showed that compared with MGO using fossil energy-based methanol and ammonia has no positive effect in terms of annual WTW GHG emissions. The emission reduction effects of fuels ranking from highest to lowest were full solar and battery-based methanol full solar and battery-based ammonia and LNG. Because marine ammonia-fuelled engines have not been commercialised laboratory data were used to evaluate the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The GHG emission reduction potential of ammonia can be exploited more effectively if the N2O emitted from engines is captured and disposed of through after-treatment technologies. This paper discussed three scenarios of N2O emission abatement ratios of 30% 50% and 90%. The resulting emission reduction effects showed that using full solar and battery-based ammonia with 90% N2O abatement performs better than using full solar and battery-based methanol. The main innovation of this work is realising the LCA GHG emission assessment for a deep-sea ship.
Integrated Demand Response Design of Integrated Energy System with Mobile Hydrogen Energy Storage in Time-Domain Two-Port Model

With the development of energy integration technology demand response (DR) has gradually evolved into integrated demand response (IDR). In this study for the integrated energy system (IES) on the distribution grid side with electricity heat natural gas network and hydrogen energy equipment the analogy relationship between the thermal and mobile hydrogen energy storage networks is proposed. Moreover a unified model that reflects network commonalities across different energy forms is established. Then considering the time delay of the IES in the nontransient network a time-domain two-port model of the IES considering the time delay is established. This model shows the joint effect of time and space on system parameters. Finally this study validates the model in the application of DR. The verification results show that in DR the time-domain two-port model can accurately “cut peaks and fill valleys” for the IES and effectively reduce the operating cost of the IES system.
Reduction in Greenhouse Gas and Other Emissions from Ship Engines: Current Trends and Future Options

The impact of ship emission reductions can be maximised by considering climate health and environmental effects simultaneously and using solutions fitting into existing marine engines and infrastructure. Several options available enable selecting optimum solutions for different ships routes and regions. Carbon-neutral fuels including low-carbon and carbon-negative fuels from biogenic or non-biogenic origin (biomass waste renewable hydrogen) could resemble current marine fuels (diesel-type methane and methanol). The carbon-neutrality of fuels depends on their Well-to-Wake (WtW) emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) including carbon dioxide (CO2) methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide emissions (N2O). Additionally non-gaseous black carbon (BC) emissions have high global warming potential (GWP). Exhaust emissions which are harmful to health or the environment need to be equally removed using emission control achieved by fuel engine or exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Harmful emission species include nitrogen oxides (NOx) sulphur oxides (SOx) ammonia (NH3) formaldehyde particle mass (PM) and number emissions (PN). Particles may carry polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals which cause serious adverse health issues. Carbon-neutral fuels are typically sulphur-free enabling negligible SOx emissions and efficient exhaust aftertreatment technologies such as particle filtration. The combinations of carbon-neutral drop-in fuels and efficient emission control technologies would enable (near-)zero-emission shipping and these could be adaptable in the short- to mid-term. Substantial savings in external costs on society caused by ship emissions give arguments for regulations policies and investments needed to support this development.
Color-Coded Hydrogen: Production and Storage in Maritime Sector

To reduce pollution from ships in coastal and international navigation shipping companies are turning to various technological solutions mostly based on electrification and the use of alternative fuels with a lower carbon footprint. One of the alternatives to traditional diesel fuel is the use of hydrogen as a fuel or hydrogen fuel cells as a power source. Their application on ships is still in the experimental phase and is limited to smaller ships which serve as a kind of platform for evaluating the applicability of different technological solutions. However the use of hydrogen on a large scale as a primary energy source on coastal and ocean-going vessels also requires an infrastructure for the production and safe storage of hydrogen. This paper provides an overview of color-based hydrogen classification as one of the main methods for describing hydrogen types based on currently available production technologies as well as the principles and safety aspects of hydrogen storage. The advantages and disadvantages of the production technologies with respect to their application in the maritime sector are discussed. Problems and obstacles that must be overcome for the successful use of hydrogen as a fuel on ships are also identified. The issues presented can be used to determine long-term indicators of the global warming potential of using hydrogen as a fuel in the shipping industry and to select an appropriate cost-effective and environmentally sustainable production and storage method in light of the technological capabilities and resources of a particular area.
Towards Defossilised Steel: Supply Chain Options for a Green European Steel Industry

As the European Union intensifies its response to the climate emergency increased focus has been placed on the hard-to-abate energy-intensive industries. Primary among these is the steel industry a cornerstone of the European economy and industry. With the emergence of new hydrogen-based steelmaking options particularly through hydrogen direct reduction the structure of global steel production and supply chains will transition from being based on low-cost coal resources to that based on low-cost electricity and therefore hydrogen production. This study examines the techno-economic options for three European countries of Germany Spain and Finland under five different steel supply chain configurations compared to local production. Results suggest that the high costs of hydrogen transportation make a European steelmaking supply chain cost competitive to steel produced with imported hydrogen with local production costs ranging from 465-545 €/t of crude steel (CS) and 380-494 €/tCS for 2030 and 2040 respectively. Conversely imports of hot briquetted iron and crude steel from Morocco become economically competitive with European supply chains. Given the capital and energy intensive nature of the steel industry critical investment decisions are required in this decade and this research serves to provide a deeper understanding of supply chain options for Europe.
Optimal Design and Operation of Dual-Ejector PEMFC Hydrogen Supply and Circulation System

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system requires an adequate hydrogen supply and circulation to achieve its expected performance and operating life. An ejector-based hydrogen circulation system can reduce the operating and maintenance costs noise and parasitic power consumption by eliminating the recirculation pump. However the ejector’s hydrogen entrainment capability restricted by its geometric parameters and flow control variability can only operate properly within a relatively narrow range of fuel cell output power. This research introduced the optimal design and operation control methods of a dual-ejector hydrogen supply/circulation system to support the full range of PEMFC system operations. The technique was demonstrated on a 70 kW PEMFC stack with an effective hydrogen entrainment ratio covering 8% to 100% of its output power. The optimal geometry design ensured each ejector covered a specific output power range with maximized entrainment capability. Furthermore the optimal control of hydrogen flow and the two ejectors’ opening and closing times minimized the anode gas pressure fluctuation and reduced the potential harm to the PEMFC’s operation life. The optimizations were based on dedicated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and system dynamics models and simulations. Bench tests of the resulting ejector-based hydrogen supply/circulation system verified the simulation and optimization results.
A Green Hydrogen Energy System: Optimal Control Strategies for Integrated Hydrogen Storage and Power Generation with Wind Energy

The intermittent nature of renewable energy resources such as wind and solar causes the energy supply to be less predictable leading to possible mismatches in the power network. To this end hydrogen production and storage can provide a solution by increasing flexibility within the system. Stored hydrogen as compressed gas can either be converted back to electricity or it can be used as feed-stock for industry heating for built environment and as fuel for vehicles. This research is the first to examine optimal strategies for operating integrated energy systems consisting of renewable energy production and hydrogen storage with direct gas-based use-cases for hydrogen. Using Markov decision process theory we construct optimal policies for day-to-day decisions on how much energy to store as hydrogen or buy from or sell to the electricity market and on how much hydrogen to sell for use as gas. We pay special emphasis to practical settings such as contractually binding power purchase agreements varying electricity prices different distribution channels green hydrogen offtake agreements and hydrogen market price uncertainties. Extensive experiments and analysis are performed in the context of Northern Netherlands where Europe’s first Hydrogen Valley is being formed. Results show that gains in operational revenues of up to 51% are possible by introducing hydrogen storage units and competitive hydrogen market-prices. This amounts to a e126000 increase in revenues per turbine per year for a 4.5 MW wind turbine. Moreover our results indicate that hydrogen offtake agreements will be crucial in keeping the energy transition on track.
Techno-economic Feasibility of Hybrid PV/wind/battery/thermal Storage Trigeneration System: Toward 100% Energy Independency and Green Hydrogen Production

With the clear adverse impacts of fossil fuel-based energy systems on the climate and environment ever-growing interest and rapid developments are taking place toward full or nearly full dependence on renewable energies in the next few decades. Estonia is a European country with large demands for electricity and thermal energy for district heating. Considering it as the case study this work explores the feasibility and full potential of optimally sized photovoltaic (PV) wind and PV/wind systems equipped with electric and thermal storage to fulfill those demands. Given the large excess energy from 100% renewable energy systems for an entire country this excess is utilized to first meet the district heating demand and then to produce hydrogen fuel. Using simplified models for PV and wind systems and considering polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis a genetic optimizer is employed for scanning Estonia for optimal installation sites of the three systems that maximize the fulfillment of the demand and the supply–demand matching while minimizing the cost of energy. The results demonstrate the feasibility of all systems fully covering the two demands while making a profit compared to selling the excess produced electricity directly. However the PV-driven system showed enormous required system capacity and amounts of excess energy with the limited solar resources in Estonia. The wind system showed relatively closer characteristics to the hybrid system but required a higher storage capacity by 75.77%. The hybrid PV/wind-driven system required a total capacity of 194 GW most of which belong to the wind system. It was also superior concerning the amount (15.05 × 109 tons) and cost (1.42 USD/kg) of the produced green hydrogen. With such full mapping of the installation capacities and techno-economic parameters of the three systems across the country this study can assist policymakers when planning different country-scale cogeneration systems.
Decarbonisation of Heavy-duty Diesel Engines Using Hydrogen Fuel: A Review of the Potential Impact NOx Emissions

As countries seek ways to meet climate change commitments hydrogen fuel offers a low-carbon alternative for sectors where battery electrification may not be viable. Blending hydrogen with fossil fuels requires only modest technological adaptation however since combustion is retained nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions remain a potential disbenefit. We review the potential air quality impacts arising from the use of hydrogen–diesel blends in heavy-duty diesel engines a powertrain which lends itself to hydrogen co-fuelling. Engine load is identified as a key factor influencing NOx emissions from hydrogen–diesel combustion in heavy-duty engines although variation in other experimental parameters across studies complicates this relationship. Combining results from peer-reviewed literature allows an estimation to be made of plausible NOx emissions from hydrogen–diesel combustion relative to pure-diesel combustion. At 0–30% engine load which encompasses the average load for mobile engine applications NOx emissions changes were in the range 59 to +24% for a fuel blend with 40 e% hydrogen. However at 50–100% load which approximately corresponds to stationary engine applications NOx emissions changes were in the range 28 to +107%. Exhaust gas recirculation may be able to reduce NOx emissions at very high and very low loads when hydrogen is blended with diesel and existing exhaust aftertreatment technologies are also likely to be effective. Recent commercial reporting on the development of hydrogen and hydrogen–diesel dual fuel combustion in large diesel engines are also summarised. There is currently some disconnection between manufacturer reported impacts of hydrogen-fuelling on NOx emissions (always lower emissions) and the conclusions drawn from the peer reviewed literature (frequently higher emissions).
Environmental Economical Dispatching of Electric–Gas Integrated Energy System Considering Hydrogen Compressed-Natural Gas

As a high-quality secondary energy hydrogen energy has great potential in energy storage and utilization. The development of power-to-hydrogen (P2H) technology has alleviated the problem of wind curtailment and improved the coupling between the power grid and the natural gas grid. Under the premise of ensuring safety using P2H technology to mix the produced hydrogen into the natural gas network for long-distance transmission and power generation can not only promote the development of hydrogen energy but also reduce carbon emissions. This paper presents a new model for incorporating hydrogen into natural gas pipelines. To minimize the sum of wind curtailment cost operation cost and carbon emission cost an electric–gas integrated energy system (EGIES) model of hydrogen-compressed natural gas (HCNG) containing P2H for power generation is constructed. Aiming at the problem of global warming caused by a lot of abandoned wind and carbon emissions the economy and environmental protection of the system model are analyzed. The results show that the model of EGIES considering HCNG can not only absorb excess wind power but also reduce carbon emission costs and system costs which can reduce the total cost of the environmental economic dispatch of the EGIES by about 34.1%. In the context of the EGIES the proposal of this model is of great significance to the economical and environmentally friendly operation of the system.

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is one of the greatest global challenges through 2050. Besides greenhouse gas emissions air pollution such as nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions has gained increasing attention in agglomerated areas with transport vehicles being one of the main sources thereof. Alternative fuels that fulfill the greenhouse gas reduction goals also offer the possibility of solving the challenge of rising urban pollution. This work focuses on the electric drive option for heavy and light duty vehicle freight transport. In this study fuel cell-electric vehicles battery-electric vehicles and overhead catenary line trucks were investigated taking a closer look at their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution and also considering the investment and operating costs of the required infrastructure. This work was conducted using a bottom-up transport model for the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Two scenarios for reducing these emissions were analyzed at a spatial level. In the first of these selected federal highways with the highest traffic volume were equipped with overhead catenary lines for the operation of diesel-hybrid overhead trucks on them. For the second spatial scenario the representative urban area of the city of Cologne was investigated in terms of air pollution shifting articulated trucks to diesel-hybrid overhead trucks and rigid trucks trailer trucks and light duty vehicles to battery-electric or fuel cell-electric drives. For the economic analysis the building up of a hydrogen infrastructure in the cases of articulated trucks and all heavy duty vehicles were also taken into account. The results showed that diesel-hybrid overhead trucks are only a cost-efficient solution for highways with high traffic volume whereas battery overhead trucks have a high uncertainty in terms of costs and technical feasibility. In general the broad range of costs for battery overhead trucks makes them competitive with fuel cell-electric trucks. Articulated trucks have the highest potential to be operated as overhead trucks. However the results indicated that air pollution is only partially reduced by switching conventional articulated trucks to electric drive models. The overall results show that a comprehensive approach such as fuel cell-electric drives for all trucks would most likely be more beneficial.
Design and Optimization of Coal to Hydrogen System Coupled with Non-Nominal Operation of Thermal Power Unit

In an actual thermal power plant deep peak shaving will cause thermal power units to run under non-nominal conditions for an extended period resulting in serious problems such as increased equipment wearing low equipment utilization efficiency and decreased benefits. To this end in this work both the design and optimization method for a coal to hydrogen system which is coupled with the expected non-nominal operation of thermal power units are proposed. Aiming towards maximum profit in the context of thermal power plants a mathematical optimization model for a coal to hydrogen system based on the multi-period operating conditions of thermal power plants is established. The corresponding optimal design scheme of the coal to hydrogen system is determined using variable operating conditions. The superiority of the integrated system compared with an independent system is explored and the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by using the case study of an actual thermal power plant. The results show that compared with the independent system the economic benefits of the integrated system can increase by 13.56% where the sale of hydrogen in the coal to hydrogen system accounts for 60.3% of the total benefit. The main expenditure associated with the system is the purchase cost of feedstock coal accounting for 91.8%. Since the required power and medium-pressure steam in the coal to hydrogen process are provided by thermal power units the minimum operating load of the thermal power plant in the integrated system increases from 40% to 60.1% which significantly improves the utilization efficiency and service life of the generator units. In addition the proposed integration scheme of the system is simple and controllable which can contribute to the maintenance of the safe and stable operation of power generation and hydrogen production processes. These results are expected to provide the necessary methodological guidance for the integration and optimization of coal-fired power plants and coal to hydrogen systems.
Green Hydrogen-Based Direct Reduction for Low-Carbon Steelmaking

The European steel industry aims at a CO2 reduction of 80–95% by 2050 ensuring that Europe will meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement. As the reduction potentials of the current steelmaking routes are low the transfer toward breakthrough-technologies is essential to reach these goals. Hydrogen-based steelmaking is one approach to realize CO2-lean steelmaking. Therefore the natural gas (NG)-based direct reduction (DR) acts as a basis for the first step of this transition. The high flexibility of this route allows the gradual addition of hydrogen and in a long-term view runs the process with pure hydrogen. Model-based calculations are performed to assess the possibilities for injecting hydrogen. Therefore NG- and hydrogen-based DR models are developed to create new process know-how and enable an evaluation of these processes in terms of energy demand CO2-reduction potentials and so on. The examinations show that the hydrogen-based route offers a huge potential for green steelmaking which is strongly depending on the carbon footprint of the electricity used for the production of hydrogen. Only if the carbon intensity is less than about 120 g CO2 kWh1 the hydrogen-based process emits less CO2 than the NG-based DR process.
Towards a Prioritization of Alternative Energy Sources for Sustainable Shipping

Studies on the prospects of the use of alternative fuels in the maritime industry have rarely been assessed in the context of developing countries. This study assesses seven energy sources for shipping in the context of Bangladesh with a view to ranking their prospects based on sustainability as well as identifying the energy transition criteria. Data were collected from maritime industry experts including seafarers shipping company executives government representatives and academics. The Bayesian Best-Worst Method (BWM) was used for ranking nine criteria related to the suitability and viability of the considered alternative energy sources. Next the PROMETHEE-GAIA method is applied for priority analysis of the seven energy alternatives. The findings reveal that capital cost alternative energy price and safety are the most important factors for alternative energy transition in Bangladesh. Apart from the benchmark HFO Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) HFO-Wind and LNG-Wind hybrids are considered the most viable alternatives. The findings of the study can guide policymakers in Bangladesh in terms of promoting viable energy sources for sustainable shipping.
Optimal Incorporation of Intermittent Renewable Energy Storage Units and Green Hydrogen Production in the Electrical Sector

This paper presents a mathematical programming approach for the strategic planning of hydrogen production from renewable energies and its use in electric power generation in conventional technologies. The proposed approach aims to determine the optimal selection of the different types of technologies electrolyzers and storage units (energy and hydrogen). The approach considers the implementation of an optimization methodology to select a representative data set that characterizes the total annual demand. The economic objective aims to determine the minimum cost which is composed of the capital costs in the acquisition of units operating costs of such units costs of production and transmission of energy as well as the cost associated with the emissions generated which is related to an environmental tax. A specific case study is presented in the Mexican peninsula and the results show that it is possible to produce hydrogen at a minimum sale price of 4200 $/tonH2 with a total cost of $5.1687 × 106 and 2.5243 × 105 tonCO2eq. In addition the financial break-even point corresponds to a sale price of 6600 $/tonH2 . The proposed model determines the trade-offs between the cost and the emissions generated.
Analysis of the Combustion Process in a Hydrogen-Fueled CFR Engine

Green hydrogen produced using renewable energy is nowadays one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels for reducing pollutant emissions and in turn global warming. In particular the use of hydrogen as fuel for internal combustion engines has been widely analyzed over the past few years. In this paper the authors show the results of some experimental tests performed on a hydrogen-fueled CFR (Cooperative Fuel Research) engine with particular reference to the combustion. Both the air/fuel (A/F) ratio and the engine compression ratio (CR) were varied in order to evaluate the influence of the two parameters on the combustion process. The combustion duration was divided in two parts: the flame front development (characterized by laminar flame speed) and the rapid combustion phase (characterized by turbulent flame speed). The results of the hydrogen-fueled engine have been compared with results obtained with gasoline in a reference operating condition. The increase in engine CR reduces the combustion duration whereas the opposite effect is observed with an increase in the A/F ratio. It is interesting to observe how the two parameters CR and A/F ratio have a different influence on the laminar and turbulent combustion phases. The influence of both A/F ratio and engine CR on heat transfer to the combustion chamber wall was also evaluated and compared with the gasoline operation. The heat transfer resulting from hydrogen combustion was found to be higher than the heat transfer resulting from gasoline combustion and this is probably due to the different quenching distance of the two fuels.
Analysis of Performance, Emissions, and Lubrication in a Spark-ignition Engine Fueled with Hydrogen Gas Mixtures

Hydrogen is one of the main alternative fuels with the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels due to its renewable and environmentally friendly nature. Due to this the present investigation aims to evaluate the combustion characteristics performance parameters emissions and variations in the characteristics of the lubricating oil. The investigation was conducted in a spark-ignition engine fueled by gasoline and hydrogen gas. Four engine load conditions (25% 50% 75% and 100%) and three hydrogen gas mass concentration conditions (3% 6% and 9%) were defined for the study. The investigation results allowed to demonstrate that the injection of hydrogen gas in the gasoline engine causes an increase of 3.2% and 4.0% in the maximum values of combustion pressure and heat release rates. Additionally hydrogen causes a 2.9% increase in engine BTE. Hydrogen's more efficient combustion process allowed for reducing CO HC and smoke opacity emissions. However hydrogen gas causes an additional increase of 14.5% and 30.4% in reducing the kinematic viscosity and the total base number of the lubricating oil. In addition there was evidence of an increase in the concentration of wear debris such as Fe and Cu which implies higher rates of wear in the engine's internal components.
Ammonia as a Suitable for Fuel Cells

Ammonia an important basic chemical is produced at a scale of 150 million tons per year. Half of hydrogen produced in chemical industry is used for ammonia production. Ammonia containing 17.5 wt% hydrogen is an ideal carbon-free fuel for fuel cells. Compared to hydrogen ammonia has many advantages. In this mini-review the suitability of ammonia as fuel for fuel cells the development of different types of fuel cells using ammonia as the fuel and the potential applications of ammonia fuel cells are briefly reviewed.
The Sector Coupling Concept: A Critical Review

Pursued climate goals require reduced greenhouse gas emissions by substituting fossil fuels with energy from renewable sources in all energy-consuming processes. On a large-scale this can mainly be achieved through electricity from wind and sun which are subject to intermittency. To efficiently integrate this variable energy a coupling of the power sector to the residential transport industry and commercial/trade sector is often promoted called sector coupling (SC). Nevertheless our literature review indicates that SC is frequently misinterpreted and its scope varies among available research from exclusively considering the use of excess renewable electricity to a rather holistic view of integrated energy systems including excess heat or even biomass sources. The core objective of this article is to provide a thorough understanding of the SC concept through an analysis of its origin and its main purpose as described in the current literature. We provide a structured categorization of SC derived from our findings and critically discuss its remaining challenges as well as its value for renewable energy systems. We find that SC is rooted in the increasing use of variable renewable energy sources and its main assets are the flexibility it provides for renewable energy systems decarbonization potential for fossil-fuel-based end-consumption sectors and consequently reduced dependency on oil and gas extracting countries. However the enabling technologies face great challenges in their economic feasibility because of the uncertain future development of competing solutions.
Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control

This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation operating and maintenance costs as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical their levels of degradation in general will not be. Thus over time each stack can present a different behavior. Therefore the power control strategy cannot be based on an equal distribution according to the nominal power of each stack. On the contrary the control algorithm should take advantage of the characteristics of the multi-stack FC concept distributing operation across all the stacks regarding their capacity to produce power/energy and optimizing the overall performance.
The Potential for Hydrogen Ironmaking in New Zealand

Globally iron and steel production is responsible for approximately 6.3% of global man-made carbon dioxide emissions because coal is used as both the combustion fuel and chemical reductant. Hydrogen reduction of iron ore offers a potential alternative ‘near-zero-CO2’ route if renewable electrical power is used for both hydrogen electrolysis and reactor heating. This paper discusses key technoeconomic considerations for establishing a hydrogen direct reduced iron (H2-DRI) plant in New Zealand. The location and availability of firm renewable electricity generation is described the experimental feasibility of reducing locally-sourced titanomagnetite irons and in hydrogen is shown and a high-level process flow diagram for a counter-flow electrically heated H2-DRI process is developed. The minimum hydrogen composition of the reactor off-gas is 46% necessitating the inclusion of a hydrogen recycle loop to maximise chemical utilisation of hydrogen and minimize costs. A total electrical energy requirement of 3.24 MWh per tonne of H2-DRI is obtained for the base-case process considered here. Overall a maximum input electricity cost of no more than US$80 per MWh at the plant is required to be cost-competitive with existing carbothermic DRI processes. Production cost savings could be achieved through realistic future improvements in electrolyser efficiency (∼ US$5 per tonne of H2-DRI) and heat exchanger (∼US$3 per tonne). We conclude that commercial H2-DRI production in New Zealand is entirely feasible but will ultimately depend upon the price paid for firm electrical power at the plant.

Contribution of Potential Clean Trucks in Carbon Peak Pathway of Road Freight Based on Scenario Analysis: A Case Study of China

Reducing the carbon emissions from trucks is critical to achieving the carbon peak of road freight. Based on the prediction of truck population and well-to-wheel (WTW) emission analysis of traditional diesel trucks and potential clean trucks including natural gas battery-electric plug-in hybrid electric and hydrogen fuel cell the paper analyzed the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of China's road freight under four scenarios including baseline policy facilitation (PF) technology breakthrough (TB) and PF-TB. The truck population from 2021 to 2035 is predicted based on regression analysis by selecting the data from 2002 to 2020 of the main variables such as the GDP scale road freight turnover road freight volume and the number of trucks. The study forecasts the truck population of different segments such as mini-duty trucks (MiDT) light-duty trucks (LDT) medium-duty trucks (MDT) and heavy-duty trucks (HDT). Relevant WTW emissions data are collected and adopted based on the popular truck in China's market PHEVs have better emission intensity especially in the HDT field which reduces by 51% compared with ICEVs. Results show that the scenario of TB and PF-TB can reach the carbon peak with 0.13% and 1.5% total GHG emissions reduction per year. In contrast the baseline and PF scenario fail the carbon peak due to only focusing on the number of clean trucks while lacking the restrictions on the GHG emission factors of energy and ignoring the improvement of trucks' energy efficiency and the total emissions increased by 29.76% and 16.69% respectively compared with 2020. As the insights adopting clean trucks has an important but limited effect which should coordinate with the transition to low carbon energy and the melioration of clean trucks to reach the carbon peak of road freight in China.
Hydrogen-Powered Aviation—Design of a Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft for Entry into Service in 2040

Over the past few years the rapid growth of air traffic and the associated increase in emissions have created a need for sustainable aviation. Motivated by these challenges this paper explores how a 50-passenger regional aircraft can be hybridized to fly with the lowest possible emissions in 2040. In particular the use of liquid hydrogen in this aircraft is an innovative power source that promises to reduce CO2 and NOx emissions to zero. Combined with a fuel-cell system the energy obtained from the liquid hydrogen can be used efficiently. To realize a feasible concept in the near future considering the aspects of performance and security the system must be hybridized. In terms of maximized aircraft sustainability this paper analyses the flight phases and ground phases resulting in an aircraft design with a significant reduction in operating costs. Promising technologies such as a wingtip propeller and electric green taxiing are discussed in this paper and their potential impacts on the future of aviation are highlighted. In essence the hybridization of regional aircraft is promising and feasible by 2040; however more research is needed in the areas of fuel-cell technology thermal management and hydrogen production and storage.
A Review of Renewable Hydrogen Generation and Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Technology for Sustainable Energy Development

Beyond its typical usage as an economical fuel for creating ammonia methanol and petroleum refineries hydrogen has become a modern form of energy. Energy-scarce advanced countries like Japan and Korea are concerned about energy privacy and environmental responsibility. Many wealthy countries have been fervently building hydrogen networks and renewable energy sources to fulfil their main goals or the growing requirement for energy. In this study we concentrate on proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) generally viewed as financially viable for vehicle industries especially for automobiles demanding less hydrogen infrastructure facilities like fleets of cabs buses and logistical automobiles. This overview includes all of the significant PEMFC components focusing on the reaction gas diffusion and polymer. Without question the equipment necessary for a consistent supply of ultra-pure hydrogen is essential for the effectiveness of PEMFC in extensive requests.
The Effects of Fuel Type and Cathode Off-gas Recirculation on Combined Heat and Power Generation of Marine SOFC Systems

An increasing demand in the marine industry to reduce emissions led to investigations into more efficient power conversion using fuels with sustainable production pathways. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) are under consideration for long-range shipping because of its high efficiency low pollutant emissions and fuel flexibility. SOFC systems also have great potential to cater for the heat demand in ships but the heat integration is not often considered when assessing its feasibility. This study evaluates the electrical and heat efficiency of a 100 kW SOFC system for marine applications fuelled with methane methanol diesel ammonia or hydrogen. In addition cathode off-gas recirculation (COGR) is investigated to tackle low oxygen utilisation and thus improve heat regeneration. The software Cycle Tempo is used to simulate the power plant which uses a 1D model for the SOFCs. At nominal conditions the highest net electrical efficiency (LHV) was found for methane (58.1%) followed by diesel (57.6%) and ammonia (55.1%). The highest heat efficiency was found for ammonia (27.4%) followed by hydrogen (25.6%). COGR resulted in similar electrical efficiencies but increased the heat efficiency by 11.9% to 105.0% for the different fuels. The model was verified with a sensitivity analysis and validated by comparison with similar studies. It is concluded that COGR is a promising method to increase the heat efficiency of marine SOFC systems.
Multi-criteria Optimisation of Fermentative and Solar-driven Electrolytic Hydrogen and Electricity Supply-demand Network with Hybrid Storage System

Harnessing renewable resources such as solar energy and biogenic waste for hydrogen production offers a path toward a carbon-neutral industrial economy. This study suggests the development of a renewable-based hydrogen and power supply facility (HPSF) that relies on fermentation and solar-driven electrolysis technologies to achieve penetration of renewable hydrogen and electricity in the industrial symbiosis. Literature studies reported that the hybrid battery-hydrogen storage system could effectively improve the sustainability and reliability of renewable energy supplies yet its application under diurnal and seasonal renewable resource variations has not been well studied. Hence this work develops a multi-criteria optimisation framework for the configuration design of the proposed HPSF that concurrently targets industrial hydrogen and electrical loads with the consideration of diurnal and seasonal renewable resource variations. Case scenarios with different storage applications are presented to evaluate the role of storage in improving economic and environmental sustainability. The results show that the application of hybrid storage with molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) systems is preferred from a comprehensive sustainability standpoint which improves the sustainability-weighted return-on investment metric (SWROIM) score by 4%/yr compared to HPSF without storage application. On the other hand the application of a single-battery system is the most economical solution with a return on investment (ROI) of 0.7%/yr higher than the hybrid storage approach. The research outcome could provide insights into the integration of fermentative and solar-driven electrolytic hydrogen production technologies into the industrial symbiosis to further enhance a sustainable economy.
Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy System with Load Following for Fast Charging Stations

The transportation sector is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity as a solution to reduce emissions but the high load of charging stations poses a challenge to the power grid. Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy Systems (N-RHES) present a promising alternative to support fast charging stations reduce grid dependency and decrease emissions. However the intermittent problem of renewable energy sources (RESs) limits their application and the synergies among different technologies have not been fully exploited. This paper proposes a predictive and adaptive control strategy to optimize the energy management of N-RHES for fast charging stations considering the integration of nuclear photovoltaics and wind turbine energy with a hydrogen storage fuel cell system. The proposed dynamic model of a fast-charging station predicts electricity consumption behavior during charging processes generating probabilistic forecasting of electricity consumption time-series profiling. Key performance indicators and sensitivity analyses illustrate the practicability of the suggested system which offers a comprehensive solution to provide reliable sustainable and low-emission energy to fast-charging stations while reducing emissions and dependency on the power grid.
