HyUnder – Hydrogen Underground Storage at Large Scale: Case Study Spain

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is understood as a system capable of storing energy for a later use in a controlled manner. Surplus electricity from renewable energy serves for green hydrogen generation via electrolysis. Once produced the hydrogen is stored for later consumption. This paper describes the Spanish Case Study of the HyUnder project which aims to evaluate the potential of underground hydrogen storage for large-scale energy storage along Europe analysing besides the Spanish Case France Germany the Netherlands Romania and the United Kingdom. This case study has considered for the assessment the competitiveness of hydrogen storage against other large scale energy storage concepts the geological potential for hydrogen storage in the region how to embed the hydrogen energy storage in the energy market and the possible business cases in four different applications: transport Power to Gas re-electrification and industry taking into account all the economic aspects such us the electrolyser OPEX and CAPEX or the cavern electricity and water costs. It is shown that the Spanish geology can provide four technical options for hydrogen underground storage. Results have shown the interest of the technology in short – medium term especially linked to certain conditions of high intermittent renewable energy penetration in the Spanish power grid that result in surplus or residual electricity. Hydrogen storage is interesting because it can integrate renewable energy systems in other sectors which do not have overcapacity and a high use of fossil fuels as the natural gas sector and the transport sector. Moreover all the economic issues have been analysed for two different horizons 2025 and 2050; concluding that the average price of electricity is the main cost. From the financial results transport application represents a business case which although in order has enough values of hydrogen demand to be stored combination of different applications must be needed in order to make sense to the development of the cavern.

Metal hydrides are known as a potential efficient low-risk option for high-density hydrogen storage since the late 1970s. In this paper the present status and the future perspectives of the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage are discussed. Since the early 1990s interstitial metal hydrides are known as base materials for Ni – metal hydride rechargeable batteries. For hydrogen storage metal hydride systems have been developed in the 2010s [1] for use in emergency or backup power units i. e. for stationary applications.<br/>With the development and completion of the first submarines of the U212 A series by HDW (now Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems) in 2003 and its export class U214 in 2004 the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage in mobile applications has been established with new application fields coming into focus.<br/>In the last decades a huge number of new intermetallic and partially covalent hydrogen absorbing compounds has been identified and partly more partly less extensively characterized.<br/>In addition based on the thermodynamic properties of metal hydrides this class of materials gives the opportunity to develop a new hydrogen compression technology. They allow the direct conversion from thermal energy into the compression of hydrogen gas without the need of any moving parts. Such compressors have been developed and are nowadays commercially available for pressures up to 200 bar. Metal hydride based compressors for higher pressures are under development. Moreover storage systems consisting of the combination of metal hydrides and high-pressure vessels have been proposed as a realistic solution for on-board hydrogen storage on fuel cell vehicles.<br/>In the frame of the “Hydrogen Storage Systems for Mobile and Stationary Applications” Group in the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Task 32 “Hydrogen-based energy storage” different compounds have been and will be scaled-up in the near future and tested in the range of 500 g to several hundred kg for use in hydrogen storage applications.
Analysis of the Hydrogen Induced Cracking by Means of the Small Punch Test: Effect of the Specimen Geometry and the Hydrogen Pre-Charge Mode

This paper presents a simplified procedure to analyse the Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) of structural steels by means of the Small Punch Test (SPT). Two types of notched specimens were used: one with through-thickness lateral notch and another with surface longitudinal notch. The results for conventional specimens were compared with those for hydrogen pre-charged specimens. For this purpose two different methods to introduce hydrogen in the specimens were used: cathodic/electrochemical pre-charging and pressurized gaseous hydrogen pre-charging. The results obtained with both methods are also discussed.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of R4 and R5 High-Strength Mooring Steels in Cold and Warm Seawater

Hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility ratios calculated from slow strain rate tensile tests have been employed to study the response of three high-strength mooring steels in cold and warm synthetic seawater. The selected nominal testing temperatures have been 3 °C and 23 °C in order to resemble sea sites of offshore platform installation interest such as the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico respectively. Three scenarios have been studied for each temperature: free corrosion cathodic protection and overprotection. An improvement on the hydrogen embrittlement tendency of the steels has been observed when working in cold conditions. This provides a new insight on the relevance of the seawater temperature as a characteristic to be taken into account for mooring line design in terms of hydrogen embrittlement assessment.
Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Hydrogen-fuelled Passenger Cars

In order to achieve gradual but timely decarbonisation of the transport sector it is essential to evaluate which types of vehicles provide a suitable environmental performance while allowing the use of hydrogen as a fuel. This work compares the environmental life-cycle performance of three different passenger cars fuelled by hydrogen: a fuel cell electric vehicle an internal combustion engine car and a hybrid electric vehicle. Besides two vehicles that use hydrogen in a mixture with natural gas or gasoline were considered. In all cases hydrogen produced by wind power electrolysis was assumed. The resultant life-cycle profiles were benchmarked against those of a compressed natural gas car and a hybrid electric vehicle fed with natural gas. Vehicle infrastructure was identified as the main source of environmental burdens. Nevertheless the three pure hydrogen vehicles were all found to be excellent decarbonisation solutions whereas vehicles that use hydrogen mixed with natural gas or gasoline represent good opportunities to encourage the use of hydrogen in the short term while reducing emissions compared to ordinary vehicles.
Effect of the Strain Rate on the Fracture Behaviour of High Pressure Pre-Charged Samples

The aim of this work is to study the effect of the displacement rate on the hydrogen embrittlement of two different structural steels grades used in energetic applications. With this purpose samples were pre-charged with gaseous hydrogen at 19.5 MPa and 450 °C for 21 h. Then fracture tests of the pre-charged specimens were performed using different displacement rates. It is showed that the lower is the displacement rate and the largest is the steel strength the strongest is the reduction of the fracture toughness due to the presence of internal hydrogen.
Analysis of Samples Cleaning Methods Prior to Hydrogen Content Determination in Steel

There are multiple references to sample cleaning methods prior to hydrogen content determination or hydrogen spectroscopy analysis but there is still no unified criteria; different authors use their own “know-how” to perform this task. The aim of this paper is to solve or at least clarify this issue. In this work the most commonly used sample cleaning methods are compared. Then five different methodologies are applied on certified hydrogen content calibration pins and on high strength steel concrete-prestressing strands and the three main situations regarding hydrogen content in the microstructural net (non-charged charged and charged and uncharged) are studied. It was concluded that the HCl solution C-3.5 cleaning method recommended by ASTM G1 introduces large amounts of hydrogen in the samples; but can be useful for eliminating superficial oxides if necessary. The rest of the methods had similar results; but the more complete ones that involve ultrasounds and last longer than 8 min are not appropriated when important diffusion may occur on the samples during their application. Simple methods that involve acetone or trichloroethylene and last around 1 min are preferable for almost all situations as these are faster easier and cheaper. As a final recommendation as trichloroethylene is toxic the simple acetone method is in general the most convenient one for regular hydrogen content analysis.
Evaluation of Strength and Fracture Toughness of Ferritic High Strength Steels Under Hydrogen Environments

The susceptibility of high strength ferritic steels to hydrogen-assisted fracture in hydrogen gas is usually evaluated by mechanical testing in high-pressure hydrogen gas or testing in air after pre-charging the specimens with hydrogen. We have used this second methodology conventionally known as internal hydrogen. Samples were pre-charged in an autoclave under 195 bar of pure hydrogen at 450ºC for 21 hours.<br/>Different chromium-molybdenum steels submitted to diverse quenching and tempering heat treatments were employed. Diverse specimens were also used: small cylindrical samples to measure hydrogen contents and the kinetics of hydrogen egression at room temperature tensile specimens notched tensile specimens with a sharp notch and also compact fracture toughness specimens. Fractographic examination in SEM was finally performed in order to know the way hydrogen modify fracture micromechanisms.<br/>The presence of hydrogen barely affects the conventional tensile properties of the steels but it clearly alters their notched tensile strength and fracture toughness. This is due to the strong effect that stress triaxiality (dependent also on the steel yield strength) has on the accumulation of hydrogen on the notch/crack front region being the displacement rate used in the test another important variable to be controlled due to its influence on hydrogen diffusion to the embrittled process zone. Moreover the modification of fracture micromechanisms was finally determined being ductile (initiation growth and coalescence of microvoids) in the absence of hydrogen and brittle and intergranular under the material conditions of maximum embrittlement.
Hydrogen Embrittlement and Notch Tensile Strength of Pearlitic Steel: A Numerical Approach

This paper offers a numerical approach to the problem of hydrogen embrittlement and notch tensile strength of sharply notched specimens of high-strength pearlitic steel supplied in the form of hot rolled bars by using the finite element method in order to determine how the notch depth influences the concentration of hydrogen in the steady-state regime for different loading values. Numerical results show that the point of maximum hydrostatic stress (towards which hydrogen is transported by a mechanism of stress-assisted diffusion) shifts from the notch tip to the inner points of the specimen under increasing load with numerical evidence of an elevated inwards gradient of hydrostatic stress “pumping” hydrogen inside the sample.

Progressive cold drawing in eutectoid steel produces a preferential orientation of pearlitic colonies and ferrite/cementite lamellae thus inducing strength anisotropy in the steel and mixed mode propagation. While in the hot rolled steel (not cold drawn) the pearlitic microstructure is randomly oriented and the crack progresses in hydrogen by breaking the ferrite/cementite lamellae in heavily drawn steels the pearlitic microstructure is fully oriented and the predominant mechanism of hydrogen assisted cracking is the delamination (or decohesion) at the ferrite/cementite interface.
Perspectives on Cathodes for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are promising electrochemical devices for the efficient and clean conversion of hydrogen and low hydrocarbons into electrical energy. Their intermediate operation temperature (500–800 °C) proffers advantages in terms of greater component compatibility unnecessity of expensive noble metals for the electrocatalyst and no dilution of the fuel electrode due to water formation. Nevertheless the lower operating temperature in comparison to classic solid oxide fuel cells places significant demands on the cathode as the reaction kinetics are slower than those related to fuel oxidation in the anode or ion migration in the electrolyte. Cathode design and composition are therefore of crucial importance for the cell performance at low temperature. The different approaches that have been adopted for cathode materials research can be broadly classified into the categories of protonic–electronic conductors oxide-ionic–electronic conductors triple-conducting oxides and composite electrodes composed of oxides from two of the other categories. Here we review the relatively short history of PCFC cathode research discussing trends highlights and recent progress. Current understanding of reaction mechanisms is also discussed.
Hydrogen Assisted Cracking in Pearlitic Steel Rods: The Role of Residual Stresses Generated by Fatigue Precracking

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of metals is an issue of major concern in engineering since this phenomenon causes many catastrophic failures of structural components in aggressive environments. SCC is even more harmful under cathodic conditions promoting the phenomenon known as hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) hydrogen assisted fracture (HAF) or hydrogen embrittlement (HE). A common way to assess the susceptibility of a given material to HAC HAF or HE is to subject a cracked rod to a constant extension rate tension (CERT) test until it fractures in this harsh environment. This paper analyzes the influence of a residual stress field generated by fatigue precracking on the sample’s posterior susceptibility to HAC. To achieve this goal numerical simulations were carried out of hydrogen diffusion assisted by the stress field. Firstly a mechanical simulation of the fatigue precracking was developed for revealing the residual stress field after diverse cyclic loading scenarios and posterior stress field evolution during CERT loading. Afterwards a simulation of hydrogen diffusion assisted by stress was carried out considering the residual stresses after fatigue and the superposed rising stresses caused by CERT loading. Results reveal the key role of the residual stress field after fatigue precracking in the HAC phenomena in cracked steel rods as well as the beneficial effect of compressive residual stress.
An Autonomous Device for Solar Hydrogen Production from Sea Water

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis is one of the most promising approaches for the production of green H2 a fundamental asset for the decarbonization of the energy cycle and industrial processes. Seawater is the most abundant water source on Earth and it should be the feedstock for these new technologies. However commercial electrolyzers still need ultrapure water. The debate over the advantages and disadvantages of direct sea water electrolysis when compared with the implementation of a distillation/purification process before the electrolysis stage is building in the relevant research. However this debate will remain open for some time essentially because there are no seawater electrolyser technologies with which to compare the modular approach. In this study we attempted to build and validate an autonomous sea water electrolyzer able to produce high-purity green hydrogen (>90%) from seawater. We were able to solve most of the problems that natural seawater electrolyses imposes (high corrosion impurities etc.) with decisions based on simplicity and sustainability and those issues that are yet to be overcome were rationally discussed in view of future electrolyzer designs. Even though the performance we achieved may still be far from industrial standards our results demonstrate that direct seawater electrolysis with a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of ≈7% can be achieved with common low-cost materials and affordable fabrication methods.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of Prestressing Steel Wires: The Role of the Cold-drawing Conditions

Prestressing steel wires are highly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Residual stress-strain state produced after wire drawing plays an essential role since hydrogen damage at certain places of the material is directly affected by stress and strain fields. Changes in wire drawing conditions modify the stress and strain fields and consequently the HE susceptibility and life in service of these structural components in the presence of a hydrogenating environment. This paper analyzes the distributions of residual stress and plastic strain obtained after diverse drawing conditions (inlet die angle die bearing length varying die angle and straining path) and their influence on HE susceptibility of the wires. The conditions for industrial cold drawing can thus be optimized thereby producing commercial prestressing steel wires with improved performance against HE phenomena.
Industrial Robots Fuel Cell Based Hybrid Power-Trains: A Comparison between Different Configurations

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular. One of the most promising possible solutions is one where a hybrid powertrain made up of a FC (Fuel Cell) and a battery is used. This type of vehicle offers great autonomy and high recharging speed which makes them ideal for many industrial applications. In this work three ways to build a hybrid power-train are presented and compared. To illustrate this the case of an industrial robot designed to move loads within a fully automated factory is used. The analysis and comparison are carried out through different objective criteria that indicate the power-train performance in different battery charge levels. The hybrid configurations are tested using real power profiles of the industrial robot. Finally simulation results show the performance of each hybrid configuration in terms of hydrogen consumption battery and FC degradation and dc bus voltage and current regulation.
Comparison Between Carbon Molecular Sieve and Pd-Ag Membranes in H2-CH4 Separation at High Pressure

From a permeability and selectivity perspective supported thin-film Pd–Ag membranes are the best candidates for high-purity hydrogen recovery for methane-hydrogen mixtures from the natural gas grid. However the high hydrogen flux also results in induced bulk-to-membrane mass transfer limitations (concentration polarization) especially when working at low hydrogen concentration and high pressure which further reduces the hydrogen permeance in the presence of mixtures. Additionally Pd is a precious metal and its price is lately increasing dramatically. The use of inexpensive CMSM could become a promising alternative. In this manuscript a detailed comparison between these two membrane technologies operating under the same working pressure and mixtures is presented.<br/>First the permeation properties of CMSM and Pd–Ag membranes are compared in terms of permeance and purity and subsequently making use of this experimental investigation an economic evaluation including capital and variable costs has been performed for a separation system to recover 25 kg/day of hydrogen from a methane-hydrogen mixture. To widen the perspective also a sensitivity analysis by changing the pressure difference membrane lifetime membrane support cost and cost of Pd/Ag membrane recovery has been considered. The results show that at high pressure the use of CMSM is to more economic than the Pd-based membranes at the same recovery and similar purity.
Influence of Microstructural Anisotropy on the Hydrogen-assisted Fracture of Notched Samples of Progressively Drawn Pearlitic Steel

In this study fracture surfaces of notched specimens of pearlitic steels subjected to constant extension rate tests (CERTs) are analyzed in an environment causing hydrogen assisted fracture. In order to obtain general results both different notched geometries (to generate quite distinct stress triaxiality distributions in the vicinity of the notch tip) and diverse loading rates were used. The fracture surfaces were classified in relation to four micromechanical models of hydrogen-assisted micro-damage. To this end fractographic analysis in each fracture surface was carried out with a scanning electron microscopy. Generated results increase the number of micromechanical models found in the scientific literature.
Micro-grid Design and Life-cycle Assessment of a Mountain Hut's Stand-alone Energy System with Hydrogen Used for Seasonal Storage

Mountain huts as special stand-alone micro-grid systems are not connected to a power grid and represent a burden on the environment. The micro-grid has to be flexible to cover daily and seasonal fluctuations. Heat and electricity are usually generated with fossil fuels due to the simple on-off operation. By introducing renewable energy sources (RESs) the generation of energy could be more sustainable but the generation and consumption must be balanced. The paper describes the integration of a hydrogen-storage system (HSS) and a battery-storage system (BattS) in a mountain hut. The HSS involves a proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyser (PEMWE) a hydrogen storage tank (H2 tank) a PEM fuel cell (PEMFC) and a BattS consisting of lead-acid batteries. Eight micro-grid configurations were modelled using HOMER and evaluated from the technical environmental and economic points of view. A life-cycle assessment analysis was made from the cradle to the gate. The micro-grid configurations with the HSS achieve on average a more than 70% decrease in the environmental impacts in comparison to the state of play at the beginning but require a larger investment. Comparing the HSS with the BattS as a seasonal energy storage the hydrogen-based technology had advantages for all of the assessed criteria.
Investigation of Praseodymium and Samarium Co-doped Ceria as an Anode Catalyst for DIR-SOFC Fueled by Biogas

The Pr and Sm co-doped ceria (with up to 20 mol.% of dopants) compounds were examined as catalytic layers on the surface of SOFC anode directly fed by biogas to increase a lifetime and the efficiency of commercially available DIR-SOFC without the usage of an external reformer.
The XRD SEM and EDX methods were used to investigate the structural properties and the composition of fabricated materials. Furthermore the electrical properties of SOFCs with catalytic layers deposited on the Ni-YSZ anode were examined by a current density-time and current density-voltage dependence measurements in hydrogen (24 h) and biogas (90 h). Composition of the outlet gasses was in situ analysed by the FTIR-based unit.
It has been found out that Ce0.9Sm0.1O2-δ and Ce0.8Pr0.05Sm0.15O2-δ catalytic layers show the highest stability over time and thus are the most attractive candidates as catalytic materials in comparison with other investigated lanthanide-doped ceria enhancing direct internal reforming of biogas in SOFCs.

Hydrogen in Grid Balancing: The European Market Potential for Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzers

To limit the global temperature change to no more than 2 ◦C by reducing global emissions the European Union (EU) set up a goal of a 20% improvement on energy efficiency a 20% cut of greenhouse gas emissions and a 20% share of energy from renewable sources by 2020 (10% share of renewable energy (RE) specifically in the transport sector). By 2030 the goal is a 27% improvement in energy efficiency a 40% cut of greenhouse gas emissions and a 27% share of RE. However the integration of RE in energy system faces multiple challenges. The geographical distribution of energy supply changes significantly the availability of the primary energy source (wind solar water) and is the determining factor rather than where the consumers are. This leads to an increasing demand to match supply and demand for power. Especially intermittent RE like wind and solar power face the issue of energy production unrelated to demand (issue of excess energy production beyond demand and/or grid capacity) and forecast errors leading to an increasing demand for grid services like balancing power. Megawatt electrolyzer units (beyond 3 MW) can provide a technical solution to convert large amounts of excess electricity into hydrogen for industrial applications substitute for natural gas or the decarbonization of the mobility sector. The demonstration of successful MW electrolyzer operation providing grid services under dynamic conditions as request by the grid can broaden the opportunities of new business models that demonstrate the profitability of an electrolyzer in these market conditions. The aim of this work is the demonstration of a technical solution utilizing Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer (PAE) technology for providing grid balancing services and harvesting Renewable Energy Sources (RES) under realistic circumstances. In order to identify any differences between local market and grid requirements the work focused on a demonstration site located in Austria deemed as a viable business case for the operation of a largescale electrolyzer. The site is adapted to specific local conditions commonly found throughout Europe. To achieve this this study uses a market-based solution that aims at providing value-adding services and cash inflows stemming from the grid balancing services it provides. Moreover the work assesses the viability of various business cases by analyzing (qualitatively and quantitatively) additional business models (in terms of business opportunities/energy source potential grid service provision and hydrogen demand) and analyzing the value and size of the markets developing recommendations for relevant stakeholder to decrease market barriers.
Improving Hydrogen Production Using Co-cultivation of Bacteria with Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Microalga

Hydrogen production by microalgae is a promising technology to achieve sustainable and clean energy. Among various photosynthetic microalgae able to produce hydrogen Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a model organism widely used to study hydrogen production. Oxygen produced by photosynthesis activity of microalgae has an inhibitory effect on both expression and activity of hydrogenases which are responsible for hydrogen production. Chlamydomonas can reach anoxia and produce hydrogen at low light intensity. Here the effect of bacteria co-cultivation on hydrogen produced by Chlamydomonas at low light intensity was studied. Results indicated that however co-culturing Escherichia coli Pseudomonas stutzeri and Pseudomonas putida reduced the growth of Chlamydomonas it enhanced hydrogen production up to 24% 46% and 32% respectively due to higher respiration rate in the bioreactors at low light intensity. Chlamydomonas could grow properly in presence of an unknown bacterial consortium and hydrogen evolution improved up to 56% in these co-cultures.
Thermodynamic Analysis of a Regenerative Brayton Cycle Using H2, CH4 and H2/CH4 Blends as Fuel

Considering a simple regenerative Brayton cycle the impact of using different fuel blends containing a variable volumetric percentage of hydrogen in methane was analysed. Due to the potential of hydrogen combustion in gas turbines to reduce the overall CO2 emissions and the dependency on natural gas further research is needed to understand the impact on the overall thermodynamic cycle. For that purpose a qualitative thermodynamic analysis was carried out to assess the exergetic and energetic efficiencies of the cycle as well as the irreversibilities associated to a subsystem. A single step reaction was considered in the hypothesis of complete combustion of a generic H2/CH4 mixture where the volumetric H2 percentage was represented by fH2 which was varied from 0 to 1 defining the amount of hydrogen in the fuel mixture. Energy and entropy balances were solved through the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) code. Results showed that global exergetic and energetic efficiencies increased by 5% and 2% respectively varying fH2 from 0 to 1. Higher hydrogen percentages resulted in lower exergy destruction in the chamber despite the higher air-excess levels. It was also observed that higher values of fH2 led to lower fuel mass flow rates in the chamber showing that hydrogen can still be competitive even though its cost per unit mass is twice that of natural gas.
Multi-state Techno-economic Model for Optimal Dispatch of Grid Connected Hydrogen Electrolysis Systems Operating Under Dynamic Conditions

The production of hydrogen through water electrolysis is a promising pathway to decarbonize the energy sector. This paper presents a techno-economic model of electrolysis plants based on multiple states of operation: production hot standby and idle. The model enables the calculation of the optimal hourly dispatch of electrolyzers to produce hydrogen for different end uses. This model has been tested with real data from an existing installation and compared with a simpler electrolyzer model that is based on two states. The results indicate that an operational strategy that considers the multi-state model leads to a decrease in final hydrogen production costs. These reduced costs will benefit businesses especially while electrolysis plants grow in size to accommodate further increases in demand.

Notch-induced Anisotropic Fracture of Cold Drawn Pearlitic Steels and the Associated Crack Path Deflection and Mixed-mode Stress State: A Tribute to Masaccio

This paper deals with notch-induced anisotropic fracture behavior of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels on the basis of their microstructural evolution during manufacturing by multi-step cold drawing that produces slenderizing and orientation of the pearlitic colonies together with densification and orientation of the Fe/Fe3C lamellae reviewing previous research by the author. Results of fracture test using notched specimens of cold drawn pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing (distinct levels of strain hardening) in air and hydrogen environment shows: (i) the key impact of the colonies and lamellae alignment and orientation on notch-induced fracture producing anisotropic fracture behavior with its related crack path deflection (or fracture path deviation); (ii) the necessity of both stress triaxiality (constraint) and microstructural orientation (colonies/lamellae) alignment to produce fracture path deflection; (iii) hydrogen presence (the circumstance) promotes crack path deviation in addition to the inherent microstructural anisotropy created by cold drawing; (iv) the anisotropic fracture path with a stepped profile in cold drawn pearlitic steel consisting of deflections and deviations from the initial transverse fracture path in mode I resembles Masaccio’s Tribute Money painting with its mountains at the background so that the present paper can be considered as a Tribute to Masaccio.
Application of the Incremental Step Loading Technique to Small Punch Tests on S420 Steel in Acid Environments

The Small Punch test has been recently used to estimate mechanical properties of steels in aggressive environments. This technique very interesting when there is shortage of material consists in using a small plane specimen and punch it until it fails. The type of tests normally used are under a constant load in an aggressive environment with the target to determine the threshold stress. However this is an inaccurate technique which takes time as the tests are quite slow. In this paper the Small Punch tests are combined with the step loading technique collected in the standard ASTM F1624 [1] to obtain the value of threshold stress of an S420 steel in a total time of approximately one week. The ASTM F1624 indicates how to apply constant load steps in hydrogen embrittlement environments increasing them subsequently and adapting their duration until the specimen fails. The environment is created by means of cathodic polarization of cylindrical tensile specimens in an acid electrolyte. A batch of standard tests are performed to validate the methodology.
Assessing the Life-Cycle Performance of Hydrogen Production via Biofuel Reforming in Europe

Currently hydrogen is mainly produced through steam reforming of natural gas. However this conventional process involves environmental and energy security concerns. This has led to the development of alternative technologies for (potentially) green hydrogen production. In this work the environmental and energy performance of biohydrogen produced in Europe via steam reforming of glycerol and bio-oil is evaluated from a life-cycle perspective and contrasted with that of conventional hydrogen from steam methane reforming. Glycerol as a by-product from the production of rapeseed biodiesel and bio-oil from the fast pyrolysis of poplar biomass are considered. The processing plants are simulated in Aspen Plus® to provide inventory data for the life cycle assessment. The environmental impact potentials evaluated include abiotic depletion global warming ozone layer depletion photochemical oxidant formation land competition acidification and eutrophication. Furthermore the cumulative (total and non-renewable) energy demand is calculated as well as the corresponding renewability scores and life-cycle energy balances and efficiencies of the biohydrogen products. In addition to quantitative evidence of the (expected) relevance of the feedstock and impact categories considered results show that poplar-derived bio-oil could be a suitable feedstock for steam reforming in contrast to first-generation bioglycerol.
Multi-vector Energy Management System including Scheduling Electrolyser, Electric Vehicle Charging Station and Other Assets in a Real Scenario

Today in the field of energy the main goal is to reduce emissions with 7 the aim of maintaining a clean environment. To reduce energy consumption 8 from fossil fuels new tools for micro-grids have been proposed. In the context 9 of multi-vector energy management systems the present work proposes an 10 optimal scheduler based on genetic algorithms to manage flexible assets in the 11 energy system such as energy storage and manageable demand. This tool is 12 applied to a case study for a Spanish technology park (360 kW consumption 13 peak) with photovoltaic and wind generation (735 kW generation peak) 14 hydrogen production (15 kW) and electric and fuel cell charging stations. 15 It provides an hourly day-ahead scheduling for the existing flexible assets: 16 the electrolyser the electric vehicle charging station the hydrogen refuelling 17 station and the heating ventilation and air conditioning system in one 18 building of the park. 19 A set of experiments is carried out over a period of 14 days using real 20 data and performing computations in real time in order to test and validate 21 the tool. The analysis of results show that the solution maximises the use of 22 local renewable energy production (demand is shifted to those hours when 23 there is a surplus of generation) which means a reduction in energy costs 24 whereas the computational cost allows the implementation of the tool in real 25 time.
Comparative Sustainability Study of Energy Storage Technologies Using Data Envelopment Analysis

The transition to energy systems with a high share of renewable energy depends on the availability of technologies that can connect the physical distances or bridge the time differences between the energy supply and demand points. This study focuses on energy storage technologies due to their expected role in liberating the energy sector from fossil fuels and facilitating the penetration of intermittent renewable sources. The performance of 27 energy storage alternatives is compared considering sustainability aspects by means of data envelopment analysis. To this end storage alternatives are first classified into two clusters: fast-response and long-term. The levelized cost of energy energy and water consumption global warming potential and employment are common indicators considered for both clusters while energy density is used only for fast-response technologies where it plays a key role in technology selection. Flywheel reveals the highest efficiency between all the fast-response technologies while green ammonia powered with solar energy ranks first for long-term energy storage. An uncertainty analysis is incorporated to discuss the reliability of the results. Overall results obtained and guidelines provided can be helpful for both decision-making and research and development purposes. For the former we identify the most appealing energy storage options to be promoted while for the latter we report quantitative improvement targets that would make inefficient technologies competitive if attained. This contribution paves the way for more comprehensive studies in the context of energy storage by presenting a powerful framework for comparing options according to multiple sustainability indicators.
Finding Synergy Between Renewables and Coal: Flexible Power and Hydrogen Production from Advanced IGCC Plants with Integrated CO2 Capture

Variable renewable energy (VRE) has seen rapid growth in recent years. However VRE deployment requires a fleet of dispatchable power plants to supply electricity during periods with limited wind and sunlight. These plants will operate at reduced utilization rates that pose serious economic challenges. To address this challenge this paper presents the techno-economic assessment of flexible power and hydrogen production from integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC) employing the gas switching combustion (GSC) technology for CO2 capture and membrane assisted water gas shift (MAWGS) reactors for hydrogen production. Three GSC-MAWGS-IGCC plants are evaluated based on different gasification technologies: Shell High Temperature Winkler and GE. These advanced plants are compared to two benchmark IGCC plants one without and one with CO2 capture. All plants utilize state-of-the-art H-class gas turbines and hot gas clean-up for maximum efficiency. Under baseload operation the GSC plants returned CO2 avoidance costs in the range of 24.9–36.9 €/ton compared to 44.3 €/ton for the benchmark. However the major advantage of these plants is evident in the more realistic mid-load scenario. Due to the ability to keep operating and sell hydrogen to the market during times of abundant wind and sun the best GSC plants offer a 6–11%-point higher annual rate of return than the benchmark plant with CO2 capture. This large economic advantage shows that the flexible GSC plants are a promising option for balancing VRE provided a market for the generated clean hydrogen exists.
Resilience-oriented Schedule of Microgrids with Hybrid Energy Storage System using Model Predictive Control

Microgrids can be regarded as a promising solution by which to increase the resilience of power systems in an energy paradigm based on renewable generation. Their main advantage is their ability to work as islanded systems under power grid outage conditions. Microgrids are usually integrated into electrical markets whose schedules are carried out according to economic aspects while resilience criteria are ignored. This paper shows the development of a resilience-oriented optimization for microgrids with hybrid Energy Storage System (ESS) which is validated via numerical simulations. A hybrid ESS composed of hydrogen and batteries is therefore considered with the objective of improving the autonomy of the microgrid while achieving a rapid transition response. The control problem is formulated using Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) techniques in order to take into account possible transitions between grid-connected and islanded modes at all the sample instants of the schedule horizon (SH). The control problem is developed by considering a healthy operation of the hybrid ESS thus avoiding degradation issues. The plant is modeled using the Mixed Logic Dynamic (MLD) framework owing to the presence of logic and dynamic control variables.

The Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns with a brief period of excess supply and low prices gave way to tight energy markets extreme price volatility and a compounding geopolitical challenge to energy security. At the time of writing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has been affecting the flows of gas and has put Europe on a quest to diversify its energy and gas supply that is now opening a new paradigm in the energy industry. This report comes at a time when the situation for global commodity and gas markets is in a state of rapid change and the strategic path forwards for the gas industry and energy policy-makers is continually developing. One thing is clear this is a critical and decisive moment for the gas industry. How it navigates the way through this crisis and charts a path forward will shape its long-term success and the role that it will play in the energy transition and beyond. This is the moment for the gas industry to demonstrate that gas can deliver a sustainable and secure energy future for all and that natural gas and a portfolio of decarbonized low- and zero-carbon gases are key to an achievable energy transition. This year’s report assesses key gas market trends from 2020 and 2021 including Covid-19 outcomes tightness of supply price volatility investments and the upward reversal in the global emissions trend. It then turns to the main topic on the global energy agenda – security – and considers key variables impacting it from industry and policy perspectives as well as considering possible paths to reinforce it. Finally the report looks at the main decarbonization pathways for gas supply as they progressively develop to make gas itself a low or zero-carbon fuel for the future. This report seeks to deliver insights about the global gas sector and to inform its stakeholders partners and importantly global decision-makers about the state of play today and possibilities for the future. It concludes with key insights on how sustainability security and competitiveness can help to deliver a sustainable future in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.
Hydrogen-assisted Fatigue Crack Growth: Pre-charging vs In-situ Testing in Gaseous Environments

We investigate the implications of conducting hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth experiments in a hydrogen gas environment (in-situ hydrogen charging) or in air (following exposure to hydrogen gas). The study is conducted on welded 42CrMo4 steel a primary candidate for the future hydrogen transport infrastructure allowing us to additionally gain insight into the differences in behavior between the base steel and the coarse grain heat affected zone. The results reveal significant differences between the two testing approaches and the two weld regions. The differences are particularly remarkable for the comparison of testing methodologies with fatigue crack growth rates being more than one order of magnitude higher over relevant loading regimes when the samples are tested in a hydrogen-containing environment relative to the pre-charged samples. Aided by finite element modelling and microscopy analysis these differences are discussed and rationalized. Independent of the testing approach the heat affected zone showed a higher susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. Similar microstructural behavior is observed for both testing approaches with the base metal exhibiting martensite lath decohesion while the heat affected zone experienced both martensite lath decohesion and intergranular fracture.
Integration of Hydrogen and Synthetic Natural Gas within Legacy Power Generation Facilities

Whilst various new technologies for power generation are continuously being evaluated the owners of almost-new facilities such as combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants remain motivated to adapt these to new circumstances and avoid the balance-sheet financial impairments of underutilization. Not only are the owners reluctant to decommission the legacy CCGT assets but system operators value the inertia and flexibilities they contribute to a system becoming predominated with renewable generation. This analysis therefore focuses on the reinvestment cases for adapting CCGT to hydrogen (H2 ) synthetic natural gas (SNG) and/or retrofitted carbon capture and utilization systems (CCUS). Although H2 either by itself or as part of SNG has been evaluated attractively for longer-term electricity storage the business case for how it can be part of a hybrid legacy CCGT system has not been analyzed in a market context. This work compares the power to synthetic natural gas to power (PSNGP) adaptation with the simpler and less expensive power to hydrogen to power (P2HP) adaptation. Both the P2HP and PSNGP configurations are effective in terms of decarbonizations. The best results of the feasibility analysis for a UK application with low CCGT load factors (around 31%) were obtained for 100% H2 (P2HP) in the lower range of wholesale electricity prices (less than 178 GBP/MWh) but in the higher range of prices it would be preferable to use the PSNGP configuration with a low proportion of SNG (25%). If the CCGT load factor increased to 55% (the medium scenario) the breakeven profitability point between P2HP and PSNGP decreased to a market price of 145 GBP/MWh. Alternatively with the higher load factors (above 77%) satisfactory results were obtained for PSNGP using 50% SNG if with market prices above 185 GBP/MWh.
Morphological, Structural and Hydrogen Storage Properties of LaCrO3 Perovskite-Type Oxides

Recently perovskite-type oxides have attracted researchers as new materials for solid hydrogen storage. This paper presents the performances of perovskite-type oxide LaCrO3 dedicated for hydrogen solid storage using both numerical and experimental methods. Ab initio calculations have been used here with the aim to investigate the electronic mechanical and elastic properties of LaCrO3Hx (x = 0 6) for hydrogen storage applications. Cell parameters crystal structures and mechanical properties are determined. Additionally the cohesive energy indicates the stability of the hydride. Furthermore the mechanical properties showed that both compounds (before and after hydrogenation) are stable. The microstructure and storage capacity at different temperatures of these compounds have been studied. We have shown that storage capacities are around 4 wt%. The properties obtained from this type of hydride showed that it can be used for future applications. XRD analysis was conducted in order to study the structural properties of the compound. Besides morphological thermogravimetric analysis was also conducted on the perovskite-type oxide. Finally a comparison of these materials with other hydrides used for hydrogen storage was carried out.
Challenges and Prospects of Renewable Hydrogen-based Strategies for Full Decarbonization of Stationary Power Applications

The exponentially growing contribution of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix requires large systems for energy storage to tackle resources intermittency. In this context the technologies for hydrogen production offer a clean and versatile alternative to boost renewables penetration and energy security. Hydrogen production as a strategy for the decarbonization of the energy sources mix has been investigated since the beginning of the 1990s. The stationary sector i.e. all parts of the economy excluding the transportation sector accounts for almost three-quarters of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions (mass of CO2-eq) in the world associated with power generation. While several publications focus on the hybridization of renewables with traditional energy storage systems or in different pathways of hydrogen use (mainly power-to-gas) this study provides an insightful analysis of the state of art and evolution of renewable hydrogen-based systems (RHS) to power the stationary sector. The analysis started with a thorough review of RHS deployments for power-to-power stationary applications such as in power generation industry residence commercial building and critical infrastructure. Then a detailed evaluation of relevant techno-economic parameters such as levelized cost of energy (LCOE) hydrogen roundtrip efficiency (HRE) loss of power supply probability (LPSP) self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) or renewable fraction (fRES) is provided. Subsequently lab-scale plants and pilot projects together with current market trends and commercial uptake of RHS and fuel cell systems are examined. Finally the future techno-economic barriers and challenges for short and medium-term deployment of RHS are identified and discussed.
Three-dimensional Simulations of Lean H2-air Flames Propagating in a Narrow Gap: n the Validity of the Quasi-two-dimensional Appoximation

The premixed propagation of lean isobaric H2-air flames (φ = 0.3) in Hele-Shaw cells (i.e. two parallel plates separated by a small distance h on the order of the thickness of the planar adiabatic flame δf ∼ 3 mm) is investigated numerically. Three-dimensional (3D) simulations with detailed chemistry and transport are used to examine the effect of h on the flame dynamics and its overall normalized propagation speed (S T /S L) for a semi-closed system of size 25δf × 25δf × h. To determine the validity of an existing quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) formulation (derived in the limit of h → 0) to capture the 3D dynamics results for h = 0.1δf h = 0.5δf and h = δf are reported. For h = 0.1δf strong cell splitting/merging is observed with associated low frequency/high amplitude oscillations in the temporal evolution of S T /S L (10-17Hz; 6 ≤ S T /S L ≤ 10). Larger values of h exhibit a much smoother evolution. For h = 0.5δf the cell splitting/merging is milder relaxing to a steady propagating speed of S T /S L ∼ 6 after an initial transient; for h = 1δf the flame dynamics along the h direction starts to play an important role showing two distinct phases: (i) initial symmetric propagation with a linear increase in S T /S L (from 5.3 to 6.8) as early signs of asymmetry are visible (ii) followed by a fully non-symmetric propagation resulting in an abrupt increase in S T /S L that quickly relaxes to a constant value thereafter (S T /S L ∼ 10). Our preliminary results suggest that for the lean H2-air mixture considered the quasi-2D approximation breaks down for h > 0.1δf .
Water Electrolysis for the Production of Hydrogen to Be Employed in the Ironmaking and Steelmaking Industry

The way to decarbonization will be characterized by the huge production of hydrogen through sustainable routes. Thus the basic production way is water electrolysis sustained by renewable energy sources allowing for obtaining “green hydrogen”. The present paper reviews the main available technologies for the water electrolysis finalized to the hydrogen production. We describe the fundamental of water electrolysis and the problems related to purification and/or desalinization of water before electrolysis. As a matter of fact we describe the energy efficiency issues with particular attention to the potential application in the steel industry. The fundamental aspects related to the choice of high-temperature or low-temperature technologies are analyzed.
Experimental Study of Biogas-Hydrogen Mixtures Combustion in Conventional Natural Gas Systems

Biogas is a renewable gas with low heat energy which makes it extremely difficult to use as fuel in conventional natural gas equipment. Nonetheless the use of hydrogen as a biogas additive has proven to have a beneficial effect on flame stability and combustion behavior. This study evaluates the biogas–hydrogen combustion in a conventional natural gas burner able to work up to 100 kW. Tests were performed for three different compositions of biogas: BG70 (30% CO2) BG60 (40% CO2) and BG50 (50% CO2). To achieve better flame stability each biogas was enriched with hydrogen from 5% to 25%. The difficulty of burning biogas in conventional systems was proven as the burner does not ignite when the biogas composition contains more than 40% of CO2. The best improvements were obtained at 5% hydrogen composition since the exhaust gas temperature and thus the enthalpy rises by 80% for BG70 and 65% for BG60. The stability map reveals that pure biogas combustion is unstable in BG70 and BG60; when the CO2 content is 50% ignition is inhibited. The properties change slightly when the hydrogen concentrations are more than 20% in the fuel gas and do not necessarily improve.
A Hybrid Intelligent Model to Predict the Hydrogen Concentration in the Producer Gas from a Downdraft Gasifier

This research work presents an artificial intelligence approach to predicting the hydrogen concentration in the producer gas from biomass gasification. An experimental gasification plant consisting of an air-blown downdraft fixed-bed gasifier fueled with exhausted olive pomace pellets and a producer gas conditioning unit was used to collect the whole dataset. During an extensive experimental campaign the producer gas volumetric composition was measured and recorded with a portable syngas analyzer at a constant time step of 10 seconds. The resulting dataset comprises nearly 75 hours of plant operation in total. A hybrid intelligent model was developed with the aim of performing fault detection in measuring the hydrogen concentration in the producer gas and still provide reliable values in the event of malfunction. The best performing hybrid model comprises six local internal submodels that combine artificial neural networks and support vector machines for regression. The results are remarkably satisfactory with a mean absolute prediction error of only 0.134% by volume. Accordingly the developed model could be used as a virtual sensor to support or even avoid the need for a real sensor that is specific for measuring the hydrogen concentration in the producer gas.
Waste Aluminum Application as Energy Valorization for Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Mobile Low Power Machines Applications

This article proposes a new model of power supply for mobile low power machines applications between 10 W and 30 W such as radio-controlled (RC) electric cars. This power supply is based on general hydrogen from residual aluminum and water with NaOH so it is proposed energy valorization of aluminum waste. In the present research a theoretical model allows us to predict the requested aluminum surface and the required flow of hydrogen has been developed also considering in addition to the geometry and purity of the material two key variables as the temperature and the molarity of the alkaline solution used in the hydrogen production process. Focusing on hydrogen production isopropyl alcohol plays a key role in the reactor’s fuel cell vehicle as it filters out NaOH particles and maintains a constant flow of hydrogen for the operation of the machine keeping the reactor temperature controlled. Finally a comparison of the theoretical and experimental data has been used to validate the developed model using aluminum sheets from ring cans to generate hydrogen which will be used as a source of hydrogen in a power fuel cell of an RC car. Finally the manuscript shows the parts of the vehicle’s powertrain its behavior and mode of operation.
Green Hydrogen Storage in an Underground Cavern: A Case Study in Salt Diapir of Spain

The Poza de la Sal diapir is a closed circular depression with Cretaceous Mesozoic materials formed by gypsum Keuper clays and a large extension of salt in the center with intercalations of ophite. The low seismic activity of the area the reduced permeability and porosity of the salt caverns and the proximity to the Páramo de Poza wind park make it a suitable place for the construction of a facility for underground storage of green hydrogen obtained from surplus wind power. The design of a cavern for hydrogen storage at a depth of 1000 m takes into account the differences in stresses temperatures and confining pressures involved in the salt deformation process. During the 8 months of the injection phase 23.0 GWh can be stored in the form of hydrogen obtained from the wind energy surplus to be used later in the extraction phase. The injection and extraction ratio must be developed under the conditions of geomechanical safety of the cavity so as to minimize the risks to the environment and people by conditioning the gas pressure inside the cavity to remain within a given range.
Low Temperature Autoignition of Diesel Fuel Under Dual Operation with Hydrogen and Hydrogen-carriers

While electrification of light duty vehicles is becoming a real solution to abate local pollutant as well as greenhouse gases emission heavy duty applications (such as long distance freight and maritime transport) will keep requiring fuel-based propulsion systems. In these sectors dominated by compression ignition engines research on alternative biofuels and new combustion modes is still highly necessary. Dual-fuel combustion appears as a very promising concept to replace conventional diesel fuel by sustainable ones. Among the latter hydrogen-derived fuels (the so-called electrofuels or e-fuels) are maybe the most interesting. This work addresses the effect of partial substitution of diesel fuel by hydrogen and hydrogen-carriers (ammonia and methane) on the autoignition process under low temperature conditions. Tests were carried out in a constant volume combustion chamber at different temperatures (535 600 and 650 ◦C) and pressures (11 16 and 21 bar). While the cool flames timing and intensity was only slightly affected by the low reactivity fuel energy content the main ignition was delayed this effect being much more noticeable for ammonia followed by hydrogen and finally methane. Kinetic simulations showed a clear competition for active radicals between both fuels (diesel and low reactivity fuel). The combustion duration also increased with the hydrogen or hydrogen-carrier content which greatly points to the need of modifications in the injection strategy of compression ignition engines operating under dual mode. A correlation was proposed for estimating the autoignition delay time for dual-fuel lean combustion at low temperature.
The Membrane-assisted Chemical Looping Reforming Concept for Efficient H2 Production with Inherent CO2 Capture: Experimental Demonstration and Model Validation

In this work a novel reactor concept referred to as Membrane-Assisted Chemical Looping Reforming (MA-CLR) has been demonstrated at lab scale under different operating conditions for a total working time of about 100 h. This reactor combines the advantages of Chemical Looping such as CO2 capture and good thermal integration with membrane technology for a better process integration and direct product separation in a single unit which in its turn leads to increased efficiencies and important benefits compared to conventional technologies for H2 production. The effect of different operating conditions (i.e. temperature steam-to-carbon ratio or oxygen feed in the reactor) has been evaluated in a continuous chemical looping reactor and methane conversions above 90% have been measured with (ultra-pure) hydrogen recovery from the membranes. For all the cases a maximum recovery factor of around 30% has been measured which could be increased by operating the concept at higher pressures and with more membranes. The optimum conditions have been found at temperatures around 600°C for a steam-to-carbon ratio of 3 and diluted air in the air reactor (5% O2). The complete demonstration has been carried out feeding up to 1 L/min of CH4 (corresponding to 0.6 kW of thermal input) while up to 1.15 L/min of H2 was recovered. Simultaneously a phenomenological model has been developed and validated with the experimental results. In general good agreement is observed with overall deviations below 10% in terms of methane conversion H2 recovery and separation factor. The model allows better understanding of the behavior of the MA-CLR concept and the optimization and design of scaled-up versions of the concept.
Optimal Design of Photovoltaic, Biomass, Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Tank Units and Electrolyzer Hybrid System for a Remote Area in Egypt

In this paper a new isolated hybrid system is simulated and analyzed to obtain the optimal sizing and meet the electricity demand with cost improvement for servicing a small remote area with a peak load of 420 kW. The major configuration of this hybrid system is Photovoltaic (PV) modules Biomass gasifier (BG) Electrolyzer units Hydrogen Tank units (HT) and Fuel Cell (FC) system. A recent optimization algorithm namely Mayfly Optimization Algorithm (MOA) is utilized to ensure that all load demand is met at the lowest energy cost (EC) and minimize the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the proposed system. The MOA is selected as it collects the main merits of swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms; hence it has good convergence characteristics. To ensure the superiority of the selected MOA the obtained results are compared with other well-known optimization algorithms namely Sooty Tern Optimization Algorithm (STOA) Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA). The results reveal that the suggested MOA achieves the best system design achieving a stable convergence characteristic after 44 iterations. MOA yielded the best EC with 0.2106533 $/kWh the net present cost (NPC) with 6170134 $ the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) with 0.05993% and GHG with 792.534 t/y.
Solar Hydrogen Fuel Generation from Wastewater—Beyond Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: A Perspective

Green hydrogen—a carbon-free renewable fuel—has the capability to decarbonise a variety of sectors. The generation of green hydrogen is currently restricted to water electrolysers. The use of freshwater resources and critical raw materials however limits their use. Alternative water splitting methods for green hydrogen generation via photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) have been explored in the past few decades; however their commercial potential still remains unexploited due to the high hydrogen generation costs. Novel PEC-based simultaneous generation of green hydrogen and wastewater treatment/high-value product production is therefore seen as an alternative to conventional water splitting. Interestingly the organic/inorganic pollutants in wastewater and biomass favourably act as electron donors and facilitate the dual-functional process of recovering green hydrogen while oxidising the organic matter. The generation of green hydrogen through the dual-functional PEC process opens up opportunities for a “circular economy”. It further enables the end-of-life commodities to be reused recycled and resourced for a better life-cycle design while being economically viable for commercialisation. This review brings together and critically analyses the recent trends towards simultaneous wastewater treatment/biomass reforming while generating hydrogen gas by employing the PEC technology. We have briefly discussed the technical challenges associated with the tandem PEC process new avenues techno-economic feasibility and future directions towards achieving net neutrality.
Analysis of the European Strategy for Hydrogen: A Comprehensive Review

This review focuses on analysing the strategy and aspirations of the European Union within the hydrogen sector. This aim is achieved through the examination of the European Parliament’s hydrogen strategy allowing for a study of actions and projects in hydrogen technologies. The Parliament’s hydrogen strategy is the document that provides the guideline of how the EU intends to function in the hydrogen sector and manages to cover a wide range of topics all of them significant to represent the entirety of the hydrogen sector. It touches on subjects such as hydrogen demand infrastructure research and standards among others. The review discusses also the aspect that the EU intends to be a leader in the hydrogen sector including the large-scale industrialization of key elements such as electrolysers and this purpose is corroborated by the large number of associations strategies plans and projects that are being established and developed by the European Union. The most important conclusions to learn from this analysis are that hydrogen has many of the right characteristics to make it the key to decarbonisation especially in hard-to-abate sectors and that it is bound to be one of the main actors in the imminent green transition. Moreover hydrogen seems to be having its breakthrough and this field’s development can have benefits not only from an environmental perspective but also from an economical one enabling the way into the green transition and the fight against climate change.
Integration Assessment of Turquoise Hydrogen in the European Energy System

Turquoise hydrogen from natural gas pyrolysis has recently emerged as a promising alternative for low-carbon hydrogen production with a high-value pure carbon by-product. However the implications of this technology on the broader energy system are not well understood at present. To close this literature gap this study presents an assessment of the integration of natural gas pyrolysis into a simplified European energy system. The energy system model minimizes the cost by optimizing investment and hourly dispatch of a broad range of electricity and fuel production transmission and storage technologies as well as imports/exports on the global market. Norway is included as a major natural gas producer and Germany as a major energy importer. Results reveal that pyrolysis is economically attractive at modest market shares where the carbon by-product can be sold into highvalue markets for 400 €/ton. However pyrolysis-dominated scenarios that employ methane as a hydrogen carrier also hold promise as they facilitate deep decarbonization without the need for vast expansions of international electricity hydrogen and CO2 transmission networks. The simplicity and security benefits of such pyrolysis-led decarbonization pathways justify the modest 11 % cost premium involved for an energy system where natural gas is the only energy trade vector. In conclusion there is a strong case for turquoise hydrogen in future energy systems and further efforts for commercialization of natural gas pyrolysis are recommended.
Assessing the Prospective Environmental Performance of Hydrogen from High Temperature Electrolysis Coupled with Concentrated Solar Power

Hydrogen is currently being promoted because of its advantages as an energy vector its potential 12 to decarbonise the economy and strategical implications in terms of energy security. Hydrogen 13 from high-temperature electrolysis coupled with concentrated solar power (CSP) is especially 14 interesting since it enhances the last two aspects and could benefit from significant technological 15 progress in the coming years. However there is a lack of studies assessing its future 16 environmental performance. This work fills this gap by carrying out a prospective life cycle 17 assessment based on the expected values of key performance parameters in 2030. The results 18 show that parabolic trough CSP coupled with a solid oxide electrolyser is a promising solution 19 under environmental aspects. It leads to a prospective hydrogen carbon footprint (1.85 kg CO2 20 eq/kg H2) which could be classified as low-carbon according to current standards. The 21 benchmarking study for the year 2030 shows that the assessed system significantly decreases the 22 hydrogen carbon footprint compared to future hydrogen from steam methane reforming (81% 23 reduction) and grid electrolysis (51%) even under a considerable penetration of renewable energy 24 sources.
Optimal Operation and Market Integration of a Hybrid Farm with Green Hydrogen and Energy Storage: A Stochastic Approach Considering Wind and Electricity Price Uncertainties

In recent years growing interest has emerged in investigating the integration of energy storage and green hydrogen production systems with renewable energy generators. These integrated systems address uncertainties related to renewable resource availability and electricity prices mitigating profit loss caused by forecasting errors. This paper focuses on the operation of a hybrid farm (HF) combining an alkaline electrolyzer (AEL) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a wind turbine to form a comprehensive HF. The HF operates in both hydrogen and day-ahead electricity markets. A linear mathematical model is proposed to optimize energy management considering electrolyzer operation at partial loads and accounting for degradation costs while maintaining a straightforward formulation for power system optimization. Day-ahead market scheduling and real-time operation are formulated as a progressive mixed-integer linear program (MILP) extended to address uncertainties in wind speed and electricity prices through a two-stage stochastic optimization model. A bootstrap sampling strategy is introduced to enhance the stochastic model’s performance using the same sampled data. Results demonstrate how the strategies outperform traditional Monte Carlo and deterministic approaches in handling uncertainties increasing profits up to 4% per year. Additionally a simulation framework has been developed for validating this approach and conducting different case studies.
Blue, Green, and Turquoise Pathways for Minimizing Hydrogen Production Costs from Steam Methane Reforming with CO2 Capture

Rising climate change ambitions require large-scale clean hydrogen production in the near term. “Blue” hydrogen from conventional steam methane reforming (SMR) with pre-combustion CO2 capture can fulfil this role. This study therefore presents techno-economic assessments of a range of SMR process configurations to minimize hydrogen production costs. Results showed that pre-combustion capture can avoid up to 80% of CO2 emissions cheaply at 35 €/ton but the final 20% of CO2 capture is much more expensive at a marginal CO2 avoidance cost around 150 €/ton. Thus post-combustion CO2 capture should be a better solution for avoiding the final 20% of CO2. Furthermore an advanced heat integration scheme that recovers most of the steam condensation enthalpy before the CO2 capture unit can reduce hydrogen production costs by about 6%. Two hybrid hydrogen production options were also assessed. First a “blue-green” hydrogen plant that uses clean electricity to heat the reformer achieved similar hydrogen production costs to the pure blue configuration. Second a “blue turquoise” configuration that replaces the pre-reformer with molten salt pyrolysis for converting higher hydrocarbons to a pure carbon product can significantly reduce costs if carbon has a similar value to hydrogen. In conclusion conventional pre-combustion CO2 capture from SMR is confirmed as a good solution for kickstarting the hydrogen economy and it can be tailored to various market conditions with respect to CO2 electricity and pure carbon prices.
Techno-economic Model and Feasibility Assessment of Green Hydrogen Projects Based on Electrolysis Supplied by Photovoltaic PPAs

The use of hydrogen produced from renewable energy enables the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions pursued in different international strategies. The use of power purchase agreements (PPAs) to supply renewable electricity to hydrogen production plants is an approach that can improve the feasibility of projects. This paper presents a model applicable to hydrogen projects regarding the technical and economic perspective and applies it to the Spanish case where pioneering projects are taking place via photovoltaic PPAs. The results show that PPAs are an enabling mechanism for sustaining green hydrogen projects.
Optimising Fuel Supply Chains within Planetary Boundaries: A Case Study of Hydrogen for Road Transport in the UK

The world-wide sustainability implications of transport technologies remain unclear because their assessment often relies on metrics that are hard to interpret from a global perspective. To contribute to filling this gap here we apply the concept of planetary boundaries (PBs) i.e. a set of biophysical limits critical for operating the planet safely to address the optimal design of sustainable fuel supply chains (SCs) focusing on hydrogen for vehicle use. By incorporating PBs into a mixed-integer linear programming model (MILP) we identify SC configurations that satisfy a given transport demand while minimising the PBs transgression level i.e. while reducing the risk of surpassing the ecological capacity of the Earth. On applying this methodology to the UK we find that the current fossil-based sector is unsustainable as it transgresses the energy imbalance CO2 concentration and ocean acidification PBs heavily i.e. five to 55-fold depending on the downscale principle. The move to hydrogen would help to reduce current transgression levels substantially i.e. reductions of 9–86% depending on the case. However it would be insufficient to operate entirely within all the PBs concurrently. The minimum impact SCs would produce hydrogen via water electrolysis powered by wind and nuclear energy and store it in compressed form followed by distribution via rail which would require as much as 37 TWh of electricity per year. Our work unfolds new avenues for the incorporation of PBs in the assessment and optimisation of energy systems to arrive at sustainable solutions that are entirely consistent with the carrying capacity of the planet.
Bioinspired Hybrid Model to Predict the Hydrogen Inlet Fuel Cell Flow Change of an Energy Storage System

The present research work deals with prediction of hydrogen consumption of a fuel cell in an energy storage system. Due to the fact that these kind of systems have a very nonlinear behaviour the use of traditional techniques based on parametric models and other more sophisticated techniques such as soft computing methods seems not to be accurate enough to generate good models of the system under study. Due to that a hybrid intelligent system based on clustering and regression techniques has been developed and implemented to predict the necessary variation of the hydrogen flow consumption to satisfy the variation of demanded power to the fuel cell. In this research a hybrid intelligent model was created and validated over a dataset from a fuel cell energy storage system. Obtained results validate the proposal achieving better performance than other well-known classical regression methods allowing us to predict the hydrogen consumption with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 3.73 with the validation dataset.
Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles: Plotting a Scientific and Technological Knowledge Map

The fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has been defined as a promising way to avoid road transport greenhouse emissions but nowadays they are not commercially available. However few studies have attempted to monitor the global scientific research and technological profile of FCEVs. For this reason scientific research and technological development in the field of FCEV from 1999 to 2019 have been researched using bibliometric and patent data analysis including network analysis. Based on reports the current status indicates that FCEV research topics have reached maturity. In addition the analysis reveals other important findings: (1) The USA is the most productive in science and patent jurisdiction; (2) both Chinese universities and their authors are the most productive in science; however technological development is led by Japanese car manufacturers; (3) in scientific research collaboration is located within the tri-polar world (North America–Europe–Asia-Pacific); nonetheless technological development is isolated to collaborations between companies of the same automotive group; (4) science is currently directing its efforts towards hydrogen production and storage energy management systems related to battery and hydrogen energy Life Cycle Assessment and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The technological development focuses on technologies related to electrically propelled vehicles; (5) the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and SAE Technical Papers are the two most important sources of knowledge diffusion. This study concludes by outlining the knowledge map and directions for further research.
From Grey to Green and from West to East: The Geography and Innovation Trajectories of Hydrogen Fuel Technologies

Despite the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier existing studies analysing the recent evolution of this technology are scattered typically focusing on a specific type of hydrogen technology within a single country or region. In this paper we adopt a broader perspective providing an overview of the evolution of knowledge generation across different types of hydrogen fuel and the leading countries in developing new technologies in this field. Using data from the European Patent Office we map knowledge generation on hydrogen fuel technologies exploring its geographic distribution and its link with environmental sustainability. While the United States leads the generation of new knowledge other Asian and European countries show greater dynamism in growth and specialisation. Our study shows that although hydrogen fuel is considered environmentally friendly most recent technological developments are still related to fossil energy sources. However a faster growth rate is observed in the knowledge of hydrogen fuel from renewable sources pointing to a promising path towards sustainability. Moreover our analysis of the knowledge interconnection between different hydrogen types suggests that those technologies developed for hydrogen based on fossil energy sources have enabled novel applications based on renewable energies.
Opportunities for Low-carbon Generation and Storage Technologies to Decarbonise the Future Power System

Alternatives to cope with the challenges of high shares of renewable electricity in power systems have been addressed from different approaches such as energy storage and low-carbon technologies. However no model has previously considered integrating these technologies under stability requirements and different climate conditions. In this study we include this approach to analyse the role of new technologies to decarbonise the power system. The Spanish power system is modelled to provide insights for future applications in other regions. After including storage and low-carbon technologies (currently available and under development) batteries and hydrogen fuel cells have low penetration and the derived emission reduction is negligible in all scenarios. Compressed air storage would have a limited role in the short term but its performance improves in the long term. Flexible generation technologies based on hydrogen turbines and long-duration storage would allow the greatest decarbonisation providing stability and covering up to 11–14 % of demand in the short and long term. The hydrogen storage requirement is equivalent to 18 days of average demand (well below the theoretical storage potential in the region). When these solutions are considered decarbonising the electricity system (achieving Paris targets) is possible without a significant increase in system costs (< € 114/MWh).
Model Predictive Control of an Off-sire Green Hydrogen Production and Refuelling Station

The expected increase of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has motivated the emergence of a significant number of studies on Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS). Some of the main HRS topics are sizing location design optimization and optimal operation. On-site green HRS where hydrogen is produced locally from green renewable energy sources have received special attention due to their contribution to decarbonization. This kind of HRS are complex systems whose hydraulic and electric linked topologies include renewable energy sources electrolyzers buffer hydrogen tanks compressors and batteries among other components. This paper develops a linear model of a real on-site green HRS that is set to be built in Zaragoza Spain. This plant can produce hydrogen either from solar energy or from the utility grid and is designed for three different types of services: light-duty and heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles and gas containers. In the literature there is a lack of online control solutions developed for HRS even more in the form of optimal online control. Hence for the HRS operation a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is designed to solve a weighted multi-objective online optimization problem taking into account the plant dynamics and constraints as well as the disturbances prediction. Performance is analysed throughout 210 individual month-long simulations and the effect of the multi-objective weighting prediction horizon and hydrogen selling price is discussed. With the simulation results this work shows the suitability of MPC for HRS control and its significant economic advantage compared to the rule-based control solution. In all simulations the MPC operation fulfils all required services. Moreover results show that a seven-day prediction horizon can improve profits by 57% relative to a one-day prediction horizon; that the battery is under-sized; or that the MPC operation strategy is more resolutive for low hydrogen selling prices.
Critical Materials in PEMFC Systems and a LCA Analysis for the Potential Reduction of Environmental Impacts with EoL Strategies

Commonly used materials constituting the core components of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) including the balance‐of‐plant were classified according to the EU criticality methodology with an additional assessment of hazardousness and price. A life‐cycle assessment (LCA) of the materials potentially present in PEMFC systems was performed for 1 g of each material. To demonstrate the importance of appropriate actions at the end of life (EoL) for critical materials a LCA study of the whole life cycle for a 1‐kW PEMFC system and 20000 operating hours was performed. In addition to the manufacturing phase four different scenarios of hydrogen production were analyzed. In the EoL phase recycling was used as a primary strategy with energy extraction and landfill as the second and third. The environmental impacts for 1 g of material show that platinum group metals and precious metals have by far the largest environmental impact; therefore it is necessary to pay special attention to these materials in the EoL phase. The LCA results for the 1‐kW PEMFC system show that in the manufacturing phase the major environmental impacts come from the fuel cell stack where the majority of the critical materials are used. Analysis shows that only 0.75 g of platinum in the manufacturing phase contributes on average 60% of the total environmental impacts of the manufacturing phase. In the operating phase environmentally sounder scenarios are the hydrogen production with water electrolysis using hydroelectricity and natural gas reforming. These two scenarios have lower absolute values for the environmental impact indicators on average compared with the manufacturing phase of the 1‐kW PEMFC system. With proper recycling strategies in the EoL phase for each material and by paying a lot of attention to the critical materials the environmental impacts could be reduced on average by 37.3% for the manufacturing phase and 23.7% for the entire life cycle of the 1‐kW PEMFC system.
Prospective Techno-economic and Environmental Assessment of a National Hydrogen Production Mix for Road Transport

Fuel cell electric vehicles arise as an alternative to conventional vehicles in the road transport sector. They could contribute to decarbonising the transport system because they have no direct CO2 emissions during the use phase. In fact the life-cycle environmental performance of hydrogen as a transportation fuel focuses on its production. In this sense through the case study of Spain this article prospectively assesses the techno-economic and environmental performance of a national hydrogen production mix by following a methodological framework based on energy systems modelling enriched with endogenous carbon footprint indicators. Taking into account the need for a hydrogen economy based on clean options alternative scenarios characterised by carbon footprint restrictions with respect to a fossil-based scenario dominated by steam methane reforming are evaluated. In these scenarios the steam reforming of natural gas still arises as the key hydrogen production technology in the short term whereas water electrolysis is the main technology in the medium and long term. Furthermore in scenarios with very restrictive carbon footprint limits biomass gasification also appears as a key hydrogen production technology in the long term. In the alternative scenarios assessed the functional substitution of hydrogen for conventional fossil fuels in the road transport sector could lead to high greenhouse gas emission savings ranging from 36 to 58 Mt CO2 eq in 2050. Overall these findings and the model structure and characterisation developed for the assessment of hydrogen energy scenarios are expected to be relevant not only to the specific case study of Spain but also to analysts and decision-makers in a large number of countries facing similar concerns.
Recent Insights into Low-Surface-Area Catalysts for Hydrogen Production from Ammonia

A potential method of storing and transporting hydrogen safely in a cost-effective and practical way involves the utilization of molecules that contain hydrogen in their structure such as ammonia. Because of its high hydrogen content and carbon-free molecular structure as well as the maturity of related technology (easy liquefaction) ammonia has gained attention as a “hydrogen carrier” for the generation of energy. Unfortunately hydrogen production from ammonia requires an efficient catalyst to achieve high conversion at low reaction temperatures. Recently very attractive results have been obtained with low-surface-area materials. This review paper is focused on summarizing and comparing recent advances in novel economic and active catalysts for this reaction paying particular attention to materials with low surface area such as silicon carbide (SiC) and perovskites (ABO3 structure). The effects of the supports the active phase and the addition of promoters in such low-porosity materials have been analyzed in detail. Advances in adequate catalytic systems (including support and active metal) benefit the perspective of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier for the decarbonization of the energy sector and accelerate the “hydrogen economy”.
Comprehensive Analysis of the Combustion of Low Carbon Fuels (Hydrogen, Methane and Coke Oven Gas) in a Spark Ignition Engine through CFD Modeling

The use of low carbon fuels (LCFs) in internal combustion engines is a promising alternative to reduce pollution while achieving high performance through the conversion of the high energy content of the fuels into mechanical energy. However optimizing the engine design requires deep knowledge of the complex phenomena involved in combustion that depend on the operating conditions and the fuel employed. In this work computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation tools have been used to get insight into the performance of a Volkswagen Polo 1.4L port-fuel injection spark ignition engine that has been fueled with three different LCFs coke oven gas (COG) a gaseous by-product of coke manufacture H2 and CH4. The comparison is made in terms of power pressure temperature heat release flame growth speed emissions and volumetric efficiency. Simulations in Ansys® Forte® were validated with experiments at the same operating conditions with optimal spark advance wide open throttle a wide range of engine speed (2000–5000 rpm) and air-fuel ratio (λ) between 1 and 2. A sensitivity analysis of spark timing has been added to assess its impact on combustion variables. COG with intermediate flame growth speed produced the greatest power values but with lower pressure and temperature values at λ = 1.5 reducing the emissions of NO and the wall heat transfer. The useful energy released with COG was up to 16.5% and 5.1% higher than CH4 and H2 respectively. At richer and leaner mixtures (λ = 1 and λ = 2) similar performances were obtained compared to CH4 and H2 combining advantages of both pure fuels and widening the λ operation range without abnormal combustion. Therefore suitable management of the operating conditions maximizes the conversion of the waste stream fuel energy into useful energy while limiting emissions.
New Combustion Modelling Approach for Methane-Hydrogen Fueled Engines Using Machine Learning and Engine Virtualization

The achievement of a carbon-free emissions economy is one of the main goals to reduce climate change and its negative effects. Scientists and technological improvements have followed this trend improving efficiency and reducing carbon and other compounds that foment climate change. Since the main contributor of these emissions is transportation detaching this sector from fossil fuels is a necessary step towards an environmentally friendly future. Therefore an evaluation of alternative fuels will be needed to find a suitable replacement for traditional fossil-based fuels. In this scenario hydrogen appears as a possible solution. However the existence of the drawbacks associated with the application of H2 -ICE redirects the solution to dual-fuel strategies which consist of mixing different fuels to reduce negative aspects of their separate use while enhancing the benefits. In this work a new combustion modelling approach based on machine learning (ML) modeling is proposed for predicting the burning rate of different mixtures of methane (CH4 ) and hydrogen (H2). Laminar flame speed calculations have been performed to train the ML model finding a faster way to obtain good results in comparison with actual models applied to SI engines in the virtual engine model framework.
True Cost of Solar Hydrogen

Green hydrogen will be an essential part of the future 100% sustainable energy and industry system. Up to one-third of the required solar and wind electricity would eventually be used for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen increasing the cumulative electrolyzer capacity to about 17 TWel by 2050. The key method applied in this research is a learning curve approach for the key technologies i.e. solar photovoltaics (PV) and water electrolyzers and levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Sensitivities for the hydrogen demand and various input parameters are considered. Electrolyzer capital expenditure (CAPEX) for a large utility-scale system is expected to decrease from the current 400 €/kWel to 240 €/kWel by 2030 and to 80 €/kWel by 2050. With the continuing solar PV cost decrease this will lead to an LCOH decrease from the current 31–81 €/ MWhH2LHV (1.0–2.7 €/kgH2) to 20–54 €/MWhH2LHV (0.7–1.8 €/kgH2) by 2030 and 10–27 €/MWhH2LHV (0.3–0.9 €/kgH2) by 2050 depending on the location. The share of PV electricity cost in the LCOH will increase from the current 63% to 74% by 2050.
Hydrogen or Hydrogen-derived Methanol for Dual-fuel Compression-ignition Combustion: An Engine Perspective

Synthetic fuels or e-fuels produced from captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen are envisaged as a feasible path towards a climate-neutral transportation in medium/heavy-duty and maritime sectors. EU is presently debating energy targets by 2030 for these fuels. As their production involves chemical processing of hydrogen it must be evaluated if the extra cost is worthy at least in applications where hydrogen use is possible. This manuscript focuses on the performance and environmental impact when hydrogen and methanol are fed to a heavy-duty compression-ignition engine working under dual-fuel combustion. The trade-off thermal efficiency-NOx emissions is primary considered in the assessment by combining both variables in an own defined function. During the work engine operating settings were adjusted to exploit the potential of methanol and hydrogen. Compared to conventional combustion methanol required centering the combustion towards TDC and doubling the EGR rate resulting in a low temperature highly premixed combustion almost soot-free and with extremely low NOx emissions. The best settings for hydrogen were in the middle of those for methanol and conventional combustion. Results showed great dependance with the engine load but methanol proved superior to hydrogen for all conditions. At high load 20–60 % methanol even improved the efficiency and reduced the NOx emissions obtained by conventional combustion. However at low load hydrogen could substitute 90 % of the diesel fuel while methanol failed at substitutions higher than 55 %.
Going Offshore or Not: Where to Generate Hydrogen in Future Integrated Energy Systems?

Hydrogen can be key in the energy system transition. We investigate the role of offshore hydrogen generation in a future integrated energy system. By performing energy system optimisation in a model application of the Northern-central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050 we find that offshore hydrogen generation may likely only play a limited role and that offshore wind energy has higher value when sent to shore in the form of electricity. Forcing all hydrogen generation offshore would lead to increased energy system costs. Under the assumed scenario conditions which result in deep decarbonisation of the energy system towards 2050 hydrogen generation – both onshore and offshore – follows solar PV generation patterns. Combined with hydrogen storage this is the most cost-effective solution to satisfy future hydrogen demand. Overall we find that the role of future offshore hydrogen generation should not simply be derived from minimising costs for the offshore sub-system but by also considering the economic value that such generation would create for the whole integrated energy system. We find as a no-regret option to enable and promote the integration of offshore wind in onshore energy markets via electrical connections.
Hydrogen as an Energy Vector to Optimize the Energy Exploitation of a Self-consumption Solar Photovoltaic Facility in a Dwelling House

Solar photovoltaic (PV) plants coupled with storage for domestic self-consumption purposes seem to be a promising technology in the next years as PV costs have decreased significantly and national regulations in many countries promote their installation in order to relax the energy requirements of power distribution grids. However electrochemical storage systems are still unaffordable for many domestic users and thus the advantages of self-consumption PV systems are reduced. Thus in this work the adoption of hydrogen systems as energy vectors between a PV plant and the energy user is proposed. As a preliminary study in this work the design of a PV and hydrogen-production self-consumption plant for a single dwelling is described. Then a technical and economic feasibility study conducted by modeling the facility within the Homer Energy Pro energy systems analysis tool is reported. The proposed system will be able to provide back not only electrical energy but also thermal energy through a fuel cell or refined water covering the fundamental needs of the householders (electricity heat or cooling and water). Results show that although the proposed system effectively increases the energy local use of the PV production and reduces significantly the energy injections or demands into/from the power grid avoiding power grid congestions and increasing the nano-grid resilience operation and maintenance costs may reduce its economic attractiveness for a single dwelling.

The paper presents the first outcomes of the experimental numerical and theoretical studies performed in the funded by Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH2 JU) project HyTunnel-CS. The project aims to conduct pre-normative research (PNR) to close relevant knowledge gaps and technological bottlenecks in the provision of safety of hydrogen vehicles in underground transportation systems. Pre normative research performed in the project will ultimately result in three main outputs: harmonised recommendations on response to hydrogen accidents recommendations for inherently safer use of hydrogen vehicles in underground traffic systems and recommendations for RCS. The overall concept behind this project is to use inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral prenormative research by bringing together theoretical modelling and experimental studies to maximise the impact. The originality of the overall project concept is the consideration of hydrogen vehicle and underground traffic structure as a single system with integrated safety approach. The project strives to develop and offer safety strategies reducing or completely excluding hydrogen-specific risks to drivers passengers public and first responders in case of hydrogen vehicle accidents within the currently available infrastructure.
Hydrogen Production from Surplus Electricity Generated by an Autonomous Renewable System: Scenario 2040 on Grand Canary Island, Spain

The electrification of final energy uses is a key strategy to reach the desired scenario with zero greenhouse gas emissions. Many of them can be electrified with more or less difficulty but there is a part that is difficult to electrify at a competitive cost: heavy road transport maritime and air transport and some industrial processes are some examples. For this reason the possibility of using other energy vectors rather than electricity should be explored. Hydrogen can be considered a real alternative especially considering that this transition should not be carried out immediately because initially the electrification would be carried out in those energy uses that are considered most feasible for this conversion. The Canary Islands’ government is making considerable efforts to promote a carbon-free energy mix starting with renewable energy for electricity generation. Still in the early–mid 2030s it will be necessary to substitute heavy transport fossil fuel. For this purpose HOMER software was used to analyze the feasibility of hydrogen production using surplus electricity produced by the future electricity system. The results of previous research on the optimal generation MIX for Grand Canary Island based exclusively on renewable sources were used. This previous research considers three possible scenarios where electricity surplus is in the range of 2.3–4.9 TWh/year. Several optimized scenarios using demand-side management techniques were also studied. Therefore based on the electricity surpluses of these scenarios the optimization of hydrogen production and storage systems was carried out always covering at least the final hydrogen demand of the island. As a result it is concluded that it would be possible to produce 3.5 × 104 to 7.68 × 104 t of H2/year. In these scenarios 3.15 × 105 to 6.91 × 105 t of water per year would be required and there could be a potential production of 2.8 × 105 to 6.14 × 105 t of O2 per year.
Value of Green Hydrogen When Curtailed to Provide Grid Balancing Services

This paper evaluates the potential of grid services in France Italy Norway and Spain to provide an alternative income for electrolysers producing hydrogen from wind power. Grid services are simulated with each country's data for 2017 for energy prices grid services and wind power profiles from relevant wind parks. A novel metric is presented the value of curtailed hydrogen which is independent from several highly uncertain parameters such as electrolyser cost or hydrogen market price. Results indicate that grid services can monetise the unused spare capacity of electrolyser plants improving their economy in the critical deployment phase. For most countries up-regulation yields a value of curtailed hydrogen above 6 V/kg over 3 times higher than the EU's 2030 price target (without incentives). However countries with large hydro power resources such as Norway yield far lower results below 2 V/kg. The value of curtailed hydrogen also decreases with hydrogen production corresponding to the cases of symmetric and down-regulation.
Review of the Planning and Distribution Methodologies to Locate Hydrogen Infrastructure in the Territory

The member countries of the European Union (EU) have prioritized the incorporation of hydrogen as a key component of their energy objectives. As the world moves towards reducing its dependence on fossil fuels alternative sources of energy have gained prominence. With the growing development of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) the establishment of an infrastructure for hydrogen production and the creation of a network of service stations have become essential. This article’s purpose is to conduct a methodical review of literature regarding the use of green hydrogen for transportation and the planning of imperative infrastructure in the territory of the EU specifically Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS). In order to increase the acceptance of fuel cell vehicles a comprehensive network of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) must be built that enable drivers to refuel their vehicles quickly and easily similar to gasoline or diesel vehicles. The literature review on this topic was conducted using the Web of Science database (WOS) with a variety of search terms proposed to cover all the key components of green hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure. The implementation of HRS powered by renewable energy sources is an important step in the adoption of fuel cell vehicles and overcoming the obstacles that come with their implementation will require cooperation and innovation from governments private businesses and other stakeholders.
Natural Hydrogen in the Energy Transition: Fundamentals, Promise, and Enigmas

Beyond its role as an energy vector a growing number of natural hydrogen sources and reservoirs are being discovered all over the globe which could represent a clean energy source. Although the hydrogen amounts in reservoirs are uncertain they could be vast and they could help decarbonize energy-intensive economic sectors and facilitate the energy transition. Natural hydrogen is mainly produced through a geochemical process known as serpentinization which involves the reaction of water with low-silica ferrous minerals. In favorable locations the hydrogen produced can become trapped by impermeable rocks on its way to the atmosphere forming a reservoir. The safe exploitation of numerous natural hydrogen reservoirs seems feasible with current technology and several demonstration plants are being commissioned. Natural hydrogen may show variable composition and require custom separation purification storage and distribution facilities depending on the location and intended use. By investing in research in the mid-term more hydrogen sources could become exploitable and geochemical processes could be artificially stimulated in new locations. In the long term it may be possible to leverage or engineer the interplay between microorganisms and geological substrates to obtain hydrogen and other chemicals in a sustainable manner.
AMHYCO Project - Advances in H2/CO Combustion, Recombination and Containment Modelling

During a severe accident in a nuclear power plant one of the potential threats to the containment is the occurrence of energetic combustion events. In modern plants Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMG) as well as dedicated mitigation hardware are in place to minimize/mitigate this combustion risk and thus avoid the release of radioactive material into the environment. Advancements in SAMGs are in the focus of AMHYCO an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project officially launched on October 1st 2020. The project consortium consists of 12 organizations (from six European countries and one from Canada) and is coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). The progress made in the first two years of the AMHYCO project is here presented. A comprehensive bibliographic review has been conducted providing a common foundation to build the knowledge gained during the project. After an extensive set of accident transients simulated both for phases occurring inside and outside the reactor pressure vessel a set of challenging sequences from the combustion risk perspective for different power plant types were identified. At the same time three generic containment models for the three considered reactor designs have been created to provide the full containment analysis simulations with lumped parameter models 3-dimensional containment codes and CFD codes. In order to further consolidate the model base combustion experiments and performance tests on passive auto-catalytic recombiners under explosion prone H2/CO atmospheres were performed at CNRS (France) and FZJ (Germany). Finally it is worth saying that the experimental data and engineering models generated from the AMHYCO project are useful for other industries outside the nuclear one.
Performance Evaluation of a Fuel Cell mCHP System under Different Configurations of Hydrogen Origin and Heat Recovery

Motivated by the growing importance of fuel cell systems as the basis for distributed energy generation systems this work considers a micro-combined heat and power (mCHP) generation system based on a fuel cell integrated to satisfy the (power and thermal) energy demands of a residential application. The main objective of this work is to compare the performance of several CHP configurations with a conventional alternative in terms of primary energy consumption greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and economic viability. For that a simulation tool has been developed to easily estimate the electrical and thermal energy generated by a hydrogen fuel cell and all associated results related to the hydrogen production alternatives: excess or shortfall of electrical and thermal energy CO2 emission factor overall performance operating costs payback period etc. A feasibility study of different configuration possibilities of the micro-CHP generation system has been carried out considering different heat-to-power ratios (HPRs) in the possible demands and analyzing primary energy savings CO2 emissions savings and operating costs. An extensive parametric study has been performed to analyze the effect of the fuel cell’s electric power and number of annual operation hours as parameters. Finally a study of the influence of the configuration parameters on the final results has been carried out. Results show that in general configurations using hydrogen produced from natural gas save more primary energy than configurations with hydrogen production from electricity. Furthermore it is concluded that the best operating points are those in which the generation system and the demand have similar HPR. It has also been estimated that a reduction in renewable hydrogen price is necessary to make these systems profitable. Finally it has been determined that the most influential parameters on the results are the fuel cell electrical efficiencies hydrogen production efficiency and hydrogen cost.
Profitability of Hydrogen-Based Microgrids: A Novel Economic Analysis in Terms of Electricity Price and Equipment Costs

The current need to reduce carbon emissions makes hydrogen use essential for selfconsumption in microgrids. To make a profitability analysis of a microgrid the influence of equipment costs and the electricity price must be known. This paper studies the cost-effective electricity price (EUR/kWh) for a microgrid located at ‘’La Rábida Campus” (University of Huelva south of Spain) for two different energy-management systems (EMSs): hydrogen-priority strategy and batterypriority strategy. The profitability analysis is based on one hand on the hydrogen-systems’ cost reduction (%) and on the other hand considering renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) on cost reduction (%). Due to technological advances microgrid-element costs are expected to decrease over time; therefore future profitable electricity prices will be even lower. Results show a cost-effective electricity price ranging from 0.61 EUR/kWh to 0.16 EUR/kWh for hydrogen-priority EMSs and from 0.4 EUR/kWh to 0.17 EUR/kWh for battery-priority EMSs (0 and 100% hydrogen-system cost reduction respectively). These figures still decrease sharply if RES and ESS cost reductions are considered. In the current scenario of uncertainty in electricity prices the microgrid studied may become economically competitive in the near future
European Hydrogen Train the Trainer Framework for Responders: Outcomes of the Hyresponder Project

HyResponder is a European Hydrogen Train the Trainer programme for responders. This paper describes the key outputs of the project and the steps taken to develop and implement a long-term sustainable train the trainer programme in hydrogen safety for responders across Europe and beyond. This FCH2 JU (now Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) funded project has built on the successful outcomes of the previous HyResponse project. HyResponder has developed further and updated educational operational and virtual reality training for trainers of responders to reflect the state-of-the-art in hydrogen safety including liquid hydrogen and expand the programme across Europe and specifically within the 10 countries represented directly within the project consortium: Austria Belgium the Czech Republic France Germany Italy Norway Spain Switzerland and the United Kingdom. For the first time four levels of educational materials from fire fighter through to specialist have been developed. The digital training resources are available on the e-Platform (https://hyresponder.eu/e-platform/). The revised European Emergency Response Guide is now available to all stakeholders. The resources are intended to be used to support national training programs. They are available in 8 languages: Czech Dutch English French German Italian Norwegian and Spanish. Through the HyResponder activities trainers from across Europe have undertaken joint actions which are in turn being used to inform the delivery of regional and national training both within and beyond the project. The established pan-European network of trainers is shaping the future in the important for inherently safer deployment of hydrogen systems and infrastructure across Europe and enhancing the reach and impact of the programme.
Assessing the Feasibility of Hydrogen and Electric Buses for Urban Public Transportation using Rooftop Integrated Photovoltaic Energy in Cuenca Ecuador

A main restriction of renewables from intermittent sources is the mismatch between energy resource availability and energy requirements especially when extensive power plants are producing at their highest potential causing huge energy surpluses. In these cases excess power must be stored or curtailed. One alternative is increasing urban solar potential which could be integrated to feed electric buses directly or alternatively through hydrogen (H2 ) as an energy vector. H2 from renewable electricity can be stored and used directly or through fuel cells. This study aims to determine the H2 capability that could be achieved when integrating large-scale photovoltaic (PV) generation in urban areas. This analysis was carried out by determining the PV energy potentially generated by installing PV in Cuenca City downtown (Ecuador). Cuenca is in the process of adopting renewal of the public transport vehicle fleet introducing a new model with an electric tram main network combined with “clean type buses”. The conventional diesel urban transport could be replaced establishing a required vehicle fleet of 475 buses spread over 29 routes emitting 112 tons of CO2 and burning 11175 gallons of diesel daily. Between the main findings we concluded that the electricity that could be produced in the total roof area exceeds the actual demand in the study area by 5.5 times. Taking into account the energy surplus it was determined that the available PV power will cover from 97% to 127% of the total demand necessary to mobilize the city bus fleet. The novelty of this work is the proposal of a combined methodology to find the potential to feed urban transport with urban solar power in cities close to the equatorial line.
Hydrogen Consumption and Durability Assessment of Fuel Cell Vehicles in Realistic Driving

This study proposes a predictive equivalent consumption minimization strategy (P-ECMS) that utilizes velocity prediction and considers various dynamic constraints to mitigate fuel cell degradation assessed using a dedicated sub-model. The objective is to reduce fuel consumption in real-world conditions without prior knowledge of the driving mission. The P-ECMS incorporates a velocity prediction layer into the Energy Management System. Comparative evaluations with a conventional adaptive-ECMS (A-ECMS) a standard ECMS with a well-tuned constant equivalence factor and a rule-based strategy (RBS) are conducted across two driving cycles and three fuel cell dynamic restrictions (|∕| ≤ 0.1 0.01 and 0.001 A∕cm2 ). The proposed strategy achieves H2 consumption reductions ranging from 1.4% to 3.0% compared to A-ECMS and fuel consumption reductions of up to 6.1% when compared to RBS. Increasing dynamic limitations lead to increased H2 consumption and durability by up to 200% for all tested strategies.
Decarbonization Pathways, Strategies, and Use Cases to Achieve Net-Zero CO2 Emissions in the Steelmaking Industry

The steelmaking industry is responsible for 7% of global CO2 emissions making decarbonization a significant challenge. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of current steel-production processes assessing their environmental impact in terms of CO2 emissions at a global level. Limitations of the current pathways are outlined by using objective criteria and a detailed review of the relevant literature. Decarbonization strategies are rigorously evaluated across various scenarios emphasizing technology feasibility. Focusing on three pivotal areas—scrap utilization hydrogen integration and electricity consumption—in-depth assessments are provided backed by notable contributions from both industrial and scientific fields. The intricate interplay of technical economic and regulatory considerations substantially affects CO2 emissions particularly considering the EU Emissions Trading System. Leading steel producers have established challenging targets for achieving carbon neutrality requiring a thorough evaluation of industry practices. This paper emphasizes tactics to be employed within short- medium- and long-term periods. This article explores two distinct case studies: One involves a hot rolling mill that utilizes advanced energy techniques and uses H2 for the reheating furnace resulting in a reduction of 229 kt CO2 -eq per year. The second case examines DRI production incorporating H2 and achieves over 90% CO2 reduction per ton of DRI.
Macroeconomic Analysis of a New Green Hydrogen Industry using Input-output Analysis: The Case of Switzerland

Hydrogen is receiving increasing attention to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as carbon intensive industries and long-distance transport with the ultimate goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to net-zero. However limited knowledge exists so far on the socio-economic and environmental impacts for countries moving towards green hydrogen. Here we analyse the macroeconomic impacts both direct and indirect in terms of GDP growth employment generation and GHG emissions of green hydrogen production in Switzerland. The results are first presented in gross terms for the construction and operation of a new green hydrogen industry considering that all the produced hydrogen is allocated to passenger cars (final demand). We find that for each kg of green hydrogen produced the operational phase creates 6.0 5.9 and 9.5 times more GDP employment and GHG emissions respectively compared to the construction phase (all values in gross terms). Additionally the net impacts are calculated by assuming replacement of diesel by green hydrogen as fuel for passenger cars. We find that green hydrogen contributes to a higher GDP and employment compared to diesel while reducing GHG emissions. For instance in all the three cases namely ‘Equal Cost’ ‘Equal Energy’ and ‘Equal Service’ we find that a green hydrogen industry generates around 106% 28% and 45% higher GDP respectively; 163% 43% and 65% more full-time equivalent jobs respectively; and finally 45% 18% and 29% lower GHG emissions respectively compared to diesel and other industries. Finally the methodology developed in this study can be extended to other countries using country-specific data.
Experimental Activities on a Hydrogen-Fueled Spark-Ignition Engine for Light-Duty Applications

The increase in the overall global temperature and its subsequent impact on extreme weather events are the most critical consequences of human activity. In this scenario transportation plays a significant role in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which are the main drivers of climate change. The decline of non-renewable energy sources coupled with the aim of reducing GHG emissions from fossil fuels has forced a shift towards a net-zero emissions economy. As an example of this transition the European Union has set 2050 as the target for achieving carbon neutrality. Hydrogen (H2 ) is gaining increasing relevance as one of the most promising carbon-free energy vectors. If produced from renewable sources it facilitates the integration of various alternative energy sources for achieving a carbon-neutral economy. Recently interest in its application to the transportation sector has grown including different power plant concepts such as fuel cells or internal combustion engines. Despite exhibiting significant drawbacks such as low density combustion instabilities and incompatibilities with certain materials hydrogen is destined to become one of the future fuels. In this publication experimental activities are reported that were conducted on a sparkignition engine fueled with hydrogen at different operating points. The primary objective of this research is to gain a better understanding of the thermodynamic processes that control combustion and their effects on engine performance and pollutant emissions. The results show the emission levels performance and combustion characteristics under different conditions of dilution load and injection strategy and timing.

We analyze the use of hydrogen as a fuel for the automotive industry with the aim of decarbonizing the economy. Hydrogen is a suitable option for avoiding pollutant gas emissions developing environmentally friendly technologies replacing fossil fuels with clean renewable energies and complying with the Paris Agreement and Glasgow resolutions. In this sense renewable energies such as wind solar photovoltaic geothermal biomass etc. can be used to produce the necessary hydrogen to power vehicles. In this way the entire process from hydrogen production to its consumption as fuel will be 100% clean. If we are to meet future energy demands it is necessary to forecast the amount of hydrogen needed taking into account the facilities currently available and new ones that will be required for its generation storage and distribution. This paper presents a process for optimizing hydrogen production for the automotive industry that considers the amount of hydrogen needed the type of facilities from which it will be produced how the different sources of production are to be combined to achieve a competitive product and the potential environmental impacts of each energy source. It can serve as a frame of reference for the various actors in the hydropower and automotive industries so that more efficient designs can be planned for the gradual introduction of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs). The methodology implemented in this paper sets an optimization problem for minimizing energy production costs and reducing environmental impacts according to the source of energy production. The EU framework with respect to the decarbonization of the economy the percentages of the different types of energy sources used and the non-polluting vehicle fleet in the automotive sector will be considered.
Use of Hydrogen in Off-Grid Locations, a Techno-Economic Assessment

Diesel generators are currently used as an off-grid solution for backup power but this causes CO2 and GHG emissions noise emissions and the negative effects of the volatile diesel market influencing operating costs. Green hydrogen production by means of water electrolysis has been proposed as a feasible solution to fill the gaps between demand and production the main handicaps of using exclusively renewable energy in isolated applications. This manuscript presents a business case of an off-grid hydrogen production by electrolysis applied to the electrification of isolated sites. This study is part of the European Ely4off project (n◦ 700359). Under certain techno-economic hypothesis four different system configurations supplied exclusively by photovoltaic are compared to find the optimal Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE): photovoltaic-batteries photovoltaic-hydrogen-batteries photovoltaic-diesel generator and diesel generator; the influence of the location and the impact of different consumptions profiles is explored. Several simulations developed through specific modeling software are carried out and discussed. The main finding is that diesel-based systems still allow lower costs than any other solution although hydrogen-based solutions can compete with other technologies under certain conditions.
Optimal Dispatch Model for PV-electrolysis Plants in Self-consumption Regime to Produce Green Hydrogen: A Spanish Case Study

The production of green hydrogen from renewable energy by means of water electrolysis is a promising approach to support energy sector decarbonization. This paper presents a techno-economic model of plants with PV sources connected to electrolysis in self-consumption regime that considers the dynamics of electrolysis systems. The model calculates the optimal hourly dispatch of the electrolysis system including the operational states (production standby and idle) the load factor in production and the energy imports and exports to the electricity grid. Results indicate that the model is a useful decision support tool to operate electrolysis plants connected to PV plants in self-consumption regimes with the target of reducing hydrogen production costs.
Preliminary Design of a Self-Sufficient Electrical Storage System Based on Electrolytic Hydrogen for Power Supply in a Residential Application

The use of renewable energy and hydrogen technology is a sustainable solution for the intermittent feature of renewable energies. Hence the aim of the present work is to design a self-sufficient system for a one-family house by coupling a solar photovoltaic array and an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). The first step is the selection of the photovoltaic panel by using PV-SYST 7.0 software. Then the hydrogen production system is calculated by coupling the electrolyzer and photovoltaic panel current–potential curves. A fuel cell is selected to use the hydrogen produced when solar energy is not available. Finally the hydrogen storage tank is also estimated to store hydrogen for a design basis of four consecutive cloudy days according to the hydrogen consumption of the fuel cell. The whole system is designed by a simple procedure for a specific location in Ciudad Real (Spain) for January which is known as the coldest month of the year. The simple procedure described in this work could be used elsewhere and demonstrated that the hydrogen production at low scale is a suitable technology to use renewable energy for self-energy supporting in a residential application without any connection to the grid.
Fuzzy Logic-based Energy Management System for Grid-connected Residential DC Microgrids with Multi-stack Fuel Cell Systems: A Multi-objective Approach

Hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) are considered for use in renewable residential DC microgrids. This architecture is shown as a technically feasible solution to deal with the stochasticity of renewable energy sources however the complexity of its design and management increases inexorably. To address this problem this paper proposes a fuzzy logic-based energy management system (EMS) for use in grid-connected residential DC microgrids with HESS. It is a hydrogen-based HESS composed of batteries and multi-stack fuel cell system. The proposed EMS is based on a multivariable and multistage fuzzy logic controller specially designed to cope with a multi-objective problem whose solution increases the microgrid performance in terms of efficiency operating costs and lifespan of the HESS. The proposed EMS considers the power balance in the microgrid and its prediction the performance and degradation of its subsystems as well as the main electricity grid costs. This article assesses the performance of the developed EMS with respect to three reference EMSs present in the literature: the widely used dual-band hysteresis and two based on multi-objective model predictive control. Simulation results show an increase in the performance of the microgrid from a technical and economic point of view.
Batteries and Hydrogen Storage: Technical Analysis and Commercial Revision to Select the Best Option

This paper aims to analyse two energy storage methods—batteries and hydrogen storage technologies—that in some cases are treated as complementary technologies but in other ones they are considered opposed technologies. A detailed technical description of each technology will allow to understand the evolution of batteries and hydrogen storage technologies: batteries looking for higher energy capacity and lower maintenance while hydrogen storage technologies pursuing better volumetric and gravimetric densities. Additionally as energy storage systems a mathematical model is required to know the state of charge of the system. For this purpose a mathematical model is proposed for conventional batteries for compressed hydrogen tanks for liquid hydrogen storage and for metal hydride tanks which makes it possible to integrate energy storage systems into management strategies that aim to solve the energy balance in plants based on hybrid energy storage systems. From the technical point of view most batteries are easier to operate and do not require special operating conditions while hydrogen storage methods are currently functioning at the two extremes (high temperatures for metal and complex hydrides and low temperatures for liquid hydrogen or physisorption). Additionally the technical comparison made in this paper also includes research trends and future possibilities in an attempt to help plan future policies.
Transition to a Low-carbon Building Stock. Techno-economic and Spatial Optimization of Renewables‑hydrogen Strategies in Spain

Europe has set ambitious targets to reduce the final energy consumption of buildings in concerning the degree of electrification energy efficiency and penetration of renewable energy sources (RES). So far hydrogen is becoming an increasingly important energy vector offering huge opportunities to promote the share of intermittent RES. Thus this manuscript proposes an energy model for the complete decarbonization of the estimated electricity consumed by the Spanish building stock in 2030 and 2050 scenarios; the model is based on the combination of photovoltaic and wind primary sources and hydrogen technologies considering both distributed and centralized configurations applying also geospatial criteria for their optimal allocation. Large-scale RES generation centralized hydrogen production and re-electrification along with underground hydrogen storage result in the lowest levelized cost of energy (LCOE) hydrogen production costs (HPC) and the highest overall efficiency (μSYS). Wind energy is mainly harvested in the north of Spain while large PV farms are deployed in the mid-south. Furthermore reinforcement of underground hydrogen storage enhances the overall system performance reducing surplus energy and the required RES generation capacity. Finally all the considered scenarios achieve LCOE below the Spanish utility grid benchmark apart from accomplishing the decarbonization goals established for the year 2030.
Review and Comparison of Worldwide Hydrogen Activities in the Rail Sector with Special Focus on On-board Storage and Refueling Technologies

"This paper investigates hydrogen storage and refueling technologies that were used in rail vehicles over the past 20 years as well as planned activities as part of demonstration projects or feasibility studies. Presented are details of the currently available technology and its vehicle integration market availability as well as standardization and research and development activities. A total of 80 international studies corporate announcements as well as vehicle and refueling demonstration projects were evaluated with regard to storage and refueling technology pressure level hydrogen amount and installation concepts inside rolling stock. Furthermore current hydrogen storage systems of worldwide manufacturers were analyzed in terms of technical data.<br/>We found that large fleets of hydrogen-fueled passenger railcars are currently being commissioned or are about to enter service along with many more vehicles on order worldwide. 35 MPa compressed gaseous storage system technology currently dominates in implementation projects. In terms of hydrogen storage requirements for railcars sufficient energy content and range are not a major barrier at present (assuming enough installation space is available). For this reason also hydrogen refueling stations required for 35 MPa vehicle operation are currently being set up worldwide.<br/>A wide variety of hydrogen demonstration and retrofit projects are currently underway for freight locomotive applications around the world in addition to completed and ongoing feasibility studies. Up to now no prevailing hydrogen storage technology emerged especially because line-haul locomotives are required to carry significantly more energy than passenger trains. The 35 MPa compressed storage systems commonly used in passenger trains offer too little energy density for mainline locomotive operation - alternative storage technologies are not yet established. Energy tender solutions could be an option to increase hydrogen storage capacity here."
AMHYCO Project - Towards Advanced Accident Guidelines for Hydrogen Safety in Nuclear Power Plants

Severe accidents in nuclear power plants are potentially dangerous to both humans and the environment. To prevent and/or mitigate the consequences of these accidents it is paramount to have adequate accident management measures in place. During a severe accident combustible gases — especially hydrogen and carbon monoxide — can be released in significant amounts leading to a potential explosion risk in the nuclear containment building. These gases need to be managed to avoid threatening the containment integrity which can result in the releases of radioactive material into the environment. The main objective of the AMHYCO project is to propose innovative enhancements in the way combustible gases are managed in case of a severe accident in currently operating reactors. For this purpose the AMHYCO project pursues three specific activities including experimental investigations of relevant phenomena related to hydrogen / carbon monoxide combustion and mitigation with PARs (Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners) improvement of the predictive capabilities of analysis tools used for explosion hazard evaluation inside the reactor containment as well as enhancement of the Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMGs) with respect to combustible gases risk management based on theoretical and experimental results. Officially launched on 1 October 2020 AMHYCO is an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project that will last 4 years from 2020 to 2024. This international project consists of 12 organizations (six from European countries and one from Canada) and is led by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). AMHYCO will benefit from the worldwide experts in combustion science accident management and nuclear safety in its Advisory Board. The paper will give an overview of the work program and planned outcome of the project.
Ammonia as a Carrier for Hydrogen Production by using Lanthanum Based Perovskites

LaNiO3 and LaCoO3 perovskites synthesized by self-combustion were characterised and studied in the ammonia decomposition reaction for obtaining hydrogen. Both the fuel to metal nitrates molar ratio and calcination temperature were found to be crucial to synthesize perovskites by self-combustion. Moreover generating non-precursor species during synthesis and small metal size were two factors which significantly influenced catalytic activity. Hence with a citric acid to metal nitrates molar ratio equal to one a LaNiO3 perovskite was obtained with suitable physicochemical properties (specific surface area lower impurities and basicity). In addition a lower calcination temperature (650 ◦C) resulted in small and well-dispersed Ni0 crystallite size after reduction which in turn promoted the catalytic transformation of ammonia into hydrogen. For cobalt perovskites calcination temperature below 900 ◦C did not have a significant influence on the size of the metallic cobalt crystallite size. The nickel and cobalt perovskite-derived catalysts calcined at 650 ◦C and 750 ◦C respectively yielded excellent H2 production from ammonia decomposition. In particular at 450 ◦C almost 100% of the ammonia was converted over the LaNiO3 under study. Furthermore these materials displayed admirable performance and stability after one day of reaction.
The Role of Hydrogen in Heavy Transport to Operate within Planetary Boundaries

Green hydrogen i.e. produced from renewable resources is attracting attention as an alternative fuel for the future of heavy road transport and long-distance driving. However the benefits linked to zero pollution at the usage stage can be overturned when considering the upstream processes linked to the raw materials and energy requirements. To better understand the global environmental implications of fuelling heavy transport with hydrogen we quantified the environmental impacts over the full life cycle of hydrogen use in the context of the Planetary Boundaries (PBs). The scenarios assessed cover hydrogen from biomass gasification (with and without carbon capture and storage [CCS]) and electrolysis powered by wind solar bioenergy with CCS nuclear and grid electricity. Our results show that the current diesel-based-heavy transport sector is unsustainable due to the transgression of the climate change-related PBs (exceeding standalone by two times the global climate-change budget). Hydrogen-fuelled heavy transport would reduce the global pressure on the climate change-related PBs helping the transport sector to stay within the safe operating space (i.e. below one-third of the global ecological budget in all the scenarios analysed). However the best scenarios in terms of climate change which are biomass-based would shift burdens to the biosphere integrity and nitrogen flow PBs. In contrast burden shifting in the electrolytic scenarios would be negligible with hydrogen from wind electricity emerging as an appealing technology despite attaining higher carbon emissions than the biomass routes

Many countries have assigned an indispensable role for carbon capture and storage (CCS) in their national climate change mitigation pathways. However CCS deployment has stalled in most countries with only limited commercial projects realised mainly in hydrocarbon-rich countries for enhanced oil recovery. If the Paris Agreement is to be met then this progress must be replicated widely including hydrocarbon-limited countries. In this study we present a novel source-to-sink assessment methodology based on a hubs and clusters approach to identify favourable regions for CCS deployment and attract renewed public and political interest in viable deployment pathways. Here we apply this methodology to Spain where fifteen emission hubs from both the power and the hard-to-abate industrial sectors are identified as potential CO2 sources. A priority storage structure and two reserves for each hub are selected based on screening and ranking processes using a multi-criteria decision-making method. The priority source-to-sink clusters are identified indicating four potential development regions with the North-Western and North-Eastern Spain recognised as priority regions due to resilience provided by different types of CO2 sources and geological structures. Up to 68.7 Mt CO2 per year comprising around 21% of Spanish emissions can be connected to clusters linked to feasible storage. CCS especially in the hard-to-abate sector and in combination with other low-carbon energies (e.g. blue hydrogen and bioenergy) remains a significant and unavoidable contributor to the Paris Agreement’s mid-century net-zero target. This study shows that the hubs and clusters approach can facilitate CCS deployment in Spain and other hydrocarbon-limited countries.
Analysis of the Use of Recycled Aluminum to Generate Green Hydrogen in an Electric Bicycle

This article proposes using recycled aluminum generating hydrogen in situ at low pressure to power a 250 W electric bicycle with a fuel cell (FC) to increase the average speed and autonomy compared to a conventional electric bicycle with a battery. To generate hydrogen the aluminum–water reaction with a 6 M NaOH solution is used as a catalyst. This article details the parts of the generation system the electronic configuration used the aluminum- and reagent-loading procedure and the by-products obtained as well as the results of the operation without pedaling with a resistance equivalent to a flat terrain and at maximum power of the accelerator for one and two loads of about 100 g of aluminum each. This allows us to observe different hybrid strategies with a low-capacity battery in each case. The goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to store energy in a long-lasting transportable low-pressure and sustainable manner using recycled-aluminum test tubes and to apply this to mobility
Perspectives for a Sustainable Implementation of Super-green Hydrogen Production by Photoelectrochemical Technology in Hard-to-abate Sectors

The energy transition's success hinges on the effectiveness to curbing carbon emissions from hard-to-abate sectors. Hydrogen (H2) has been proposed as the candidate vector that could be used to replace fossils in such energy-intensive industries. Despite green H2 via solar-powered water electrolysis being a reality today the overall defossilization of the hard-to-abate sectors by electrolytic H2 would be unfeasible as it relies on the availability of renewable electricity. In this sense the unbiassed photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC) as inspired by natural photosynthesis may be a promising alternative expected in the long term. PEC could be partly or even completely decoupled from renewable electricity and then could produce H2 autonomously. However some remaining challenges still limit PEC water splitting to operate sustainably. These limitations need to be evaluated before the scaling up and implementation. A prospective life cycle assessment (LCA) has been used to elucidate a positive performance scenario in which the so-called super-green H2 or photo-H2 could be a sustainable alternative to electro-H2. The study has defined future scenarios by conducting a set of sensitivity assessments determining the figures of operating parameters such as i) the energy to produce the cell; ii) solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH); and iii) lifetime. These parameters have been evaluated based on two impact categories: i) Global Warming Potential (GWP); and ii) fossil Abiotic Depletion Potentials (fADP). The mature water electrolysis was used for benchmarking in order to elucidate the target performance in which PEC technology could be positively implemented at large-scale. Efficiencies over 10% (STH) and 7 years of lifetime are compulsory in the coming developments to achieve a positive scaling-up.
Biological Hydrogen Methanation with Carbon Dioxide Utilization: Methanation Acting as Mediator in the Hydrogen Economy

Hydrogen is one of the main energy carriers playing a prominent role in the future decarbonization of the economy. However several aspects regarding the transport and storage of this gas are challenging. The intermediary conversion of hydrogen into high-density energy molecules may be a crucial step until technological conditions are ready to attain a significant reduction in fossil fuel use in transport and the industrial sector. The process of transforming hydrogen into methane by anaerobic digestion is reviewed showing that this technology is a feasible option for facilitating hydrogen storage and transport. The manuscript focuses on the role of anaerobic digestion as a technology driver capable of fast adaptation to current energy needs. The use of thermophilic systems and reactors capable of increasing the contact between the H2 -fuel and liquid phase demonstrated outstanding capabilities attaining higher conversion rates and increasing methane productivity. Pressure is a relevant factor of the process allowing for better hydrogen solubility and setting the basis for considering feasible underground hydrogen storage concomitant with biological methanation. This feature may allow the integration of sequestered carbon dioxide as a relevant substrate.
Toward Sustainability: An Overview of the Use of Green Hydrogen in the Agriculture and Livestock Sector

The agro-livestock sector produces about one third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since more energy is needed to meet the growing demand for food and the industrial revolution in agriculture renewable energy sources could improve access to energy resources and energy security reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce GHG emissions. Hydrogen production is a promising energy technology but its deployment in the global energy system is lagging. Here we analyzed the theoretical and practical application of green hydrogen generated by electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources in the agro-livestock sector. Green hydrogen is at an early stage of development in most applications and barriers to its large-scale deployment remain. Appropriate policies and financial incentives could make it a profitable technology for the future.
Study on Hydrogen Substitution in a Compressed Natural Gas Spark-ignition Passenger Car Engine

Hydrogen substitution in applications fueled by compressed natural gas arises as a potential alternative to fossil fuels and it may be the key to an effective hydrogen economy transition. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions especially carbon dioxide and unburned methane as hydrogen is used in transport and industry applications makes its use an attractive option for a sustainable future. The purpose of this research is to examine the gradual adoption of hydrogen as a fuel for light-duty transportation. Particularly the study focuses on evaluating the performance and emissions of a single-cylinder port fuel injection spark-ignition engine as hydrogen is progressively increased in the natural gas-based fuel blend. Results identify the optimal conditions for air dilution and engine operation parameters to achieve the best performance. They corroborate that the dilution rate has to be adjusted to control pollutant emissions as the percentage of hydrogen is increased. Moreover the study identifies the threshold for hydrogen substitution below which the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions due to efficiency gains is negligible compared to the reduction of the carbon content in the fuel blend. These findings will help reduce the environmental footprint of light-duty transportation not only in the long term but also in the short and medium terms.
The Economic Impact and Carbon Footprint Dependence of Energy Management Strategies in Hydrogen-Based Microgrids

This paper presents an economic impact analysis and carbon footprint study of a hydrogenbased microgrid. The economic impact is evaluated with respect to investment costs operation and maintenance (O&M) costs as well as savings taking into account two different energy management strategies (EMSs): a hydrogen-based priority strategy and a battery-based priority strategy. The research was carried out in a real microgrid located at the University of Huelva in southwestern Spain. The results (which can be extrapolated to microgrids with a similar architecture) show that although both strategies have the same initial investment costs (EUR 52339.78) at the end of the microgrid lifespan the hydrogen-based strategy requires higher replacement costs (EUR 74177.4 vs. 17537.88) and operation and maintenance costs (EUR 35254.03 vs. 34877.08) however it provides better annual savings (EUR 36753.05 vs. 36282.58) and a lower carbon footprint (98.15% vs. 95.73% CO2 savings) than the battery-based strategy. Furthermore in a scenario where CO2 emission prices are increasing the hydrogen-based strategy will bring even higher annual cost savings in the coming years.
Recent Progress in Catalysts for Hydrogen-Chlorine Regenerative Fuel Cells

The increasing energy demand and the subsequent climate change consequences are supporting the search for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. In this scenario the link between hydrogen and renewable energy is playing a key role and unitized hydrogen-chlorine (H2-Cl2) regenerative cells (RFCs) have become promising candidates for renewable energy storage. Described herein are the recent advances in cell configurations and catalysts for the different reactions that may take place in these systems that work in both modes: electrolysis and fuel cell. It has been found that platinum (Pt)-based catalysts are the best choice for the electrode where hydrogen is involved whereas for the case of chlorine ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts are the best candidates. Only a few studies were found where the catalysts had been tested in both modes and recent advances are focused on decreasing the amount of precious metals contained in the catalysts. Moreover the durability of the catalysts tested under realistic conditions has not been thoroughly assessed becoming a key and mandatory step to evaluate the commercial viability of the H2-Cl2 RFC technology.
