A Review of Current Advances in Ammonia Combustion from the Fundamentals to Applications in Internal Combustion Engines

The energy transition from hydrocarbon-based energy sources to renewable and carbon-free energy sources such as wind solar and hydrogen is facing increasing demands. The decarbonization of global transportation could come true via applying carbon-free fuel such as ammonia especially for internal combustion engines (ICEs). Although ammonia has advantages of high hydrogen content high octane number and safety in storage it is uninflammable with low laminar burning velocity thus limiting its direct usage in ICEs. The purpose of this review paper is to provide previous studies and current research on the current technical advances emerging in assisted combustion of ammonia. The limitation of ammonia utilization in ICEs such as large minimum ignition energy lower flame speed and more NOx emission with unburned NH3 could be solved by oxygen-enriched combustion ammonia–hydrogen mixed combustion and plasma-assisted combustion (PAC). In dual-fuel or oxygen-enriched NH3 combustion accelerated flame propagation speeds are driven by abundant radicals such as H and OH; however NOx emission should be paid special attention. Furthermore dissociating NH3 in situ hydrogen by non-noble metal catalysts or plasma has the potential to replace dual-fuel systems. PAC is able to change classical ignition and extinction S-curves to monotonic stretching which makes low-temperature ignition possible while leading moderate NOx emissions. In this review the underlying fundamental mechanism under these technologies are introduced in detail providing new insight into overcoming the bottleneck of applying ammonia in ICEs. Finally the feasibility of ammonia processing as an ICE power source for transport and usage highlights it as an appealing choice for the link between carbon-free energy and power demand.
Techno-Economic Assessment of a Full-Chain Hydrogen Production by Offshore Wind Power

Offshore wind power stands out as a promising renewable energy source offering substantial potential for achieving low carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. Despite its potential the expansion of offshore wind power faces considerable constraints in offshore power transmission. Hydrogen production derived from offshore wind power emerges as an efficient solution to overcome these limitations and effectively transport energy. This study systematically devises diverse hydrogen energy supply chains tailored to the demands of the transportation and chemical industries meticulously assessing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Our findings reveal that the most cost-efficient means of transporting hydrogen to the mainland is through pipelines particularly when the baseline distance is 50 km and the baseline electricity price is 0.05 USD/kWh. Notably delivering hydrogen directly to the port via pipelines for chemical industries proves considerably more economical than distributing it to hydrogen refueling stations with a minimal cost of 3.6 USD/kg. Additionally we assessed the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) for supply chains that transmit electricity to ports via submarine cables before hydrogen production and subsequent distribution to chemical plants. In comparison to offshore hydrogen production routes these routes exhibit higher costs and reduced competitiveness. Finally a sensitivity analysis was undertaken to scrutinize the impact of delivery distance and electricity prices on LCOH. The outcomes underscore the acute sensitivity of LCOH to power prices highlighting the potential for substantial reductions in hydrogen prices through concerted efforts to lower electricity costs.
Energy Management Strategy Based on Reinforcement Learning and Frequency Decoupling for Fuel Cell Hybrid Powertrain

This study presents a Two-Layer Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TL-DDPG) energy management strategy for Hydrogen fuel cell hybrid train that aims to solve the problem that traditional reinforcement learning strategies require high initial values and are difficult to optimize global variables. Augmenting the optimization capabilities of the inner layer a frequency decoupling algorithm integrates into the outer layer furnishing a fitting initial value for strategy optimization. This addition aims to bolster the stability of fuel cell output thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the hybrid power system. In comparison with the traditional reinforcement learning algorithm the proposed approach demonstrates notable improvements: a reduction in hydrogen consumption per 100 km by 16.3 kg a 9.7% increase in the output power stability of the fuel cell and a 1.8% enhancement in its efficiency.
Work Efficiency and Economic Efficiency of Actual Driving Test of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Forklift

A 3.5 tonne forklift containing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and lithium-ion batteries was manufactured and tested in a real factory. The work efficiency and economic applicability of the PEMFC forklift were compared with that of a lithium-ion battery-powered forklift. The results showed that the back-pressure of air was closely related to the power density of the stack whose stability could be improved by a reasonable control strategy and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with high consistency. The PEMFC powered forklift displayed 40.6% higher work efficiency than the lithium-ion battery-powered forklift. Its lower use-cost compared to internal engine-powered forklifts is beneficial to the commercialization of this product.
Industrial Development Status and Prospects of the Marine Fuel Cell: A Review

In the context of the increasingly strict pollutant emission regulations and carbon emission reduction targets proposed by the International Maritime Organization the shipping industry is seeking new types of marine power plants with the advantages of high efficiency and low emissions. Among the possible alternatives the fuel cell is considered to be the most practical technology as it provides an efficient means to generate electricity with low pollutant emissions and carbon emissions. Very few comprehensive reviews focus on the maritime applications of the fuel cell. Thus news reports and literature on the maritime applications of the fuel cell in the past sixty years were collected and the industrial development status and prospects of the marine fuel cell were summarized as follows. Some countries in Europe North America and Asia have invested heavily in researching and developing the marine fuel cell and a series of research projects have achieved concrete results such as the industrialized marine fuel cell system or practical demonstration applications. At present the worldwide research of the marine fuel cell focuses more on the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). However the power demand of the marine fuel cell in the future will show steady growth and thus the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with the advantages of higher power and fuel diversity will be the mainstream in the next research stage. Although some challenges exist the SOFC can certainly lead the upgrading and updating of the marine power system with the cooperative efforts of the whole world.
Cow Dung Gasification Process for Hydrogen Production Using Water Vapor as Gasification Agent

In recent years with the development of hydrogen energy economy there is an increasing demand for hydrogen in the market and hydrogen production through biomass will provide an important way to supply clean environmentally friendly and highly efficient hydrogen. In this study cow dung was selected as the biomass source and the efficiency of the biomass to hydrogen reaction was explored by coupling high temperature pyrolysis and water vapor gasification. The experimental conditions of gasification temperature water mass fraction heating rate and feed temperature were systematically studied and optimized to determine the optimal conditions for in situ hydrogen production by gasification of cow dung. The relationship of each factor to the yield of hydrogen production by gasification of cow dung semi-coke was investigated in order to elucidate the mechanism of the hydrogen production. The experiment determined the optimal operating parameters of in situ gasification: gasification temperature 1173 K water mass fraction 80% heating rate 10 K/min and feed temperature 673 K. The semi-coke treatment separated high temperature pyrolysis and water vapor gasification and reduced the influence on gasification of volatile substances such as tar extracted from pyrolysis. The increase of semi-coke preparation temperature increases the content of coke reduces the volatile matter and improves the yield of hydrogen; the small size of semi-coke particles and large specific surface area are beneficial to the gasification reaction.
Scenario-Based Comparative Analysis for Coupling Electricity and Hydrogen Storage in Clean Oilfield Energy Supply System

In response to the objective of fully attaining carbon neutrality by 2060 people from all walks of life are pursuing low-carbon transformation. Due to the high water cut in the middle and late phases of development the oilfield’s energy consumption will be quite high and the rise in energy consumption will lead to an increase in carbon emission at the same time. As a result the traditional energy model is incapable of meeting the energy consumption requirement of high water cut oilfields in their middle and later phases of development. The present wind hydrogen coupling energy system was researched and coupled with the classic dispersed oilfield energy system to produce energy for the oilfields in this study. This study compares four future energy system models to existing ones computes the energy cost and net present value of an oilfield in Northwest China and proposes a set of economic evaluation tools for oilfield energy systems. The study’s findings indicate that scenario four provides the most economic and environmental benefits. This scenario effectively addresses the issue of high energy consumption associated with aging oilfields at this point significantly reduces carbon emissions absorbs renewable energy locally and reduces the burden on the power grid system. Finally sensitivity analysis is utilized to determine the effect of wind speed electricity cost and oilfield gas output on the system’s economic performance. The results indicate that the system developed in this study can be applied to other oilfields.
Numerical Simulation on Pressure Dynamic Response Characteristics of Hydrogen Systems for Fuel Cell Vehicles

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is known as one of the most promising energy sources for electric vehicles. A hydrogen system is required to provide hydrogen to the stack in time to meet the flow and pressure requirements according to the power requirements. In this study a 1-D model of a hydrogen system including the fuel cell stack was established. Two modes one with and one without a proportion integration differentiation (PID) control strategy were applied to analyze the pressure characteristics and performance of the PEMFC. The results showed that the established model could be well verified with experimental data. The anode pressure fluctuation with a PID control strategy was more stable which reduced the damage to the fuel cell stack caused by sudden changes of anode pressure. In addition the performance of the stack with the PID control mode was slightly improved. There was an inflection point for hydrogen utilization; the hydrogen utilization rate was higher under the mode without PID control when the current density was greater than 0.4 A/cm2 . What is more a hierarchical control strategy was proposed which made the pressure difference between the anode and cathode meet the stack working requirements and more importantly maintained the high hydrogen utilization of the hydrogen system.
Numerical Simulation of Leaking Hydrogen Dispersion Behavior

As one kind of clean zero carbon and sustainable energy hydrogen energy has been regarded as the most potential secondary energy. Recently hydrogen refueling station gradually becomes one of important distribution infrastructures that provides hydrogen sources for transport vehicles and other distribution devices. However the highly combustible nature of hydrogen may bring great hazards to environment and human. The safety design of hydrogen usage has been brought to public too. This paper is mainly focused on the hydrogen leakage and dispersion process. A new solver for gaseous buoyancy dispersion process is developed based on OpenFOAM [1]. Thermodynamic and transport properties of gases are updated by library Mutation ++ [2]. For validation two tests of hydrogen dispersion in partially opened space and closed space are presented. Numerical simulation of hydrogen dispersion behavior in hydrogen refueling station is carried out in this paper as well. From the results three phases of injection dispersion and buoyancy can be seen clearly. The profile of hydrogen concentration is tend to be Gaussian in dispersion region. Subsonic H2 jet in stagnant environment is calculated for refueling station the relationship between H2 concentration decay and velocity along the jet trajectory is obtained.
National Policies, Recent Research Hotspots, and Application of Sustainable Energy: Case of China, USA and European Countries

This study tracks the variety of nations dealing with the issue of energy transition. Through process tracing and a cross-national case study a comparison of energy policies research hotspots and technical aspects of three sustainable energy systems (solar cells recharge batteries and hydrogen production) was conducted. We provide an overview of the climate-change political process and identify three broad patterns in energy-related politics in the United States China and Europe (energy neo-liberalism authoritarian environmentalism and integrated-multinational negotiation). The core processes and optimization strategies to improve the efficiency of sustainable energy usage are analyzed. This study provides both empirical and theoretical contributions to research on energy transitions.
Optimal Configuration of Multi-Energy Storage in an Electric–Thermal–Hydrogen Integrated Energy System Considering Extreme Disaster Scenarios

Extreme disasters have become increasingly common in recent years and pose significant dangers to the integrated energy system’s secure and dependable energy supply. As a vital part of an integrated energy system the energy storage system can help with emergency rescue and recovery during major disasters. In addition it can improve energy utilization rates and regulate fluctuations in renewable energy under normal conditions. In this study the sizing scheme of multienergy storage equipment in the electric–thermal–hydrogen integrated energy system is optimized; economic optimization in the regular operating scenario and resilience enhancement in extreme disaster scenarios are also considered. A refined model of multi-energy storage is constructed and a two-layer capacity configuration optimization model is proposed. This model is further enhanced by the integration of a Markov two-state fault transmission model which simulates equipment defects and improves system resilience. The optimization process is solved using the tabu chaotic quantum particle swarm optimization (TCQPSO) algorithm to provide reliable and accurate optimization results. The results indicate that addressing severe disaster situations in a capacity configuration fully leverages the reserve energy function of energy storage and enhances system resilience while maintaining economic efficiency; furthermore adjusting the load loss penalty coefficients offers a more targeted approach to the balancing of the system economy and resilience. Thus new algorithmic choices and planning strategies for future research on enhancing the resilience of integrated energy systems under extreme disaster scenarios are provided.
Design and Performance Assessment of a Solar-to-hydrogen System Thermally Assisted by Recovered Heat from a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell

Solar-to-hydrogen plants are predominantly based on steam electrolysis. Steam electrolysis requires water electricity and heat. The excess electric energy is generally converted into hydrogen via an electrolyser. The use of waste heat in hydrogen generation process promises energy efficiency improvement and production fluctuation reductions. This work investigates the techno-economic performance of the proposed system which recovers the waste heat from molten carbonate fuel cell and uses solar energy to produce steam. Comparison of thermally assisted solar system with corresponding solar system is done. The fuel cell provides 80% of the required thermal energy. The solar PV array provides the required electricity. The thermally assisted solar-to-hydrogen system annual energy efficiency (38.5 %) is higher than that of solar- to- hydrogen system. The investment cost of the proposed system is 2.4 % higher than that using only solar parabolic trough collector for the same required amount of heat. The advantage is that the fuel cell simultaneously produces electricity and heat. The recovery of waste heat allows getting an annual overall efficiency of 63.2 % for the molten carbonate fuel cell. It yields 2152 MWh of electricity per year. The 1 MW electrolysers annually generates 74 tonnes of hydrogen.
A Review of the MSCA ITN ECOSTORE—Novel Complex Metal Hydrides for Efficient and Compact Storage of Renewable Energy as Hydrogen and Electricity

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is very versatile in energy storage applications. Developments in novel sustainable technologies towards a CO2-free society are needed and the exploration of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) as well as solid-state hydrogen storage applications based on metal hydrides can provide solutions for such technologies. However there are still many technical challenges for both hydrogen storage material and ASSBs related to designing low-cost materials with low-environmental impact. The current materials considered for all-solid-state batteries should have high conductivities for Na+ Mg2+ and Ca2+ while Al3+-based compounds are often marginalised due to the lack of suitable electrode and electrolyte materials. In hydrogen storage materials the sluggish kinetic behaviour of solid-state hydride materials is one of the key constraints that limit their practical uses. Therefore it is necessary to overcome the kinetic issues of hydride materials before discussing and considering them on the system level. This review summarizes the achievements of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) innovative training network (ITN) ECOSTORE the aim of which was the investigation of different aspects of (complex) metal hydride materials. Advances in battery and hydrogen storage materials for the efficient and compact storage of renewable energy production are discussed.
Optimization of Energy Management Strategy for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Dynamic Programming

Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles have attracted a large amount of attention in recent years owing to their advantages of zero emissions high efficiency and low noise. To improve the fuel economy and system durability of vehicles this paper proposes an energy management strategy optimization method for fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles based on dynamic programming. Rule-based and dynamic-programming-based strategies are developed based on building a fuel cell/battery hybrid system model. The rule-based strategy is improved with a power distribution scheme of dynamic programming strategy to improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. Furthermore a limit on the rate of change of the output power of the fuel cell system is added to the rule-based strategy to avoid large load changes to improve the durability of the fuel cell. The simulation results show that the equivalent 100 km hydrogen consumption of the strategy based on the dynamic programming optimization rules is reduced by 6.46% compared with that before the improvement and by limiting the rate of change of the output power of the fuel cell system the times of large load changes are reduced. Therefore the strategy based on the dynamic programming optimization rules effectively improves the fuel economy and system durability of vehicles.
Investigation on the Effects of Blending Hydrogen-rich Gas in the Spark-ignition Engine

In order to improve the energy efficiency of the internal combustion engine and replace fossil fuel with alternative fuels a concept of the methanol-syngas engine was proposed and the prototype was developed. Gasoline and dissociated methanol gas (GDM) were used as dual fuels and the engine performance was investigated by simulation and experiments. Dissociated methanol gas is produced by recycling the exhaust heat. The performance and combustion process was studied and compared with the gasoline engine counterpart. There is 1.9% energy efficiency improvement and 5.5% fuel consumption reduction under 2000r/min 100 N · m working condition with methanol substitution ratio of 10%. In addition the engine efficiency further improves with an increase of dissociated methanol gas substitution ratio because of the increased heating value of the fuel and effects of hydrogen. The peak pressure in the cylinder and the peak heat release rate of the GDM engine are higher than that of the original gasoline engine with a phase closer to the top dead center (TDC). Therefore blending hydrogen-rich gas in the spark-ignition engine can recycle the exhaust heat and improve the thermal efficiency of the engine.
Experimental Study on the Self-ignition of Pressurized Hydrogen Released into Three-way Tubes

To explore the effect of bifurcation structures on the spontaneous ignition and shock wave result from the sudden release of pressurized hydrogen. Three-way tubes with different bifurcation angles (90° 120° 150°) were used in the experiments. They are two Y-shape tubes and one T-shape tube. The photoelectric and pressure signals in the tube were recorded by the sensor. The results show that the reflected shock wave will be formed at the bifurcation. In addition the intensity and velocity of the leading shock wave will attenuate sharply when it passes through the bifurcation.The smaller bifurcation angle of tubethe smaller overpressure decay rate of shock wave at bifurcation position.The smaller the bifurcation angle of tubes the weaker the reflected shock wave transmitted downstream and the greater attenuation of shock wave intensity. Experimental results have reference value for the safety of hydrogen storage at high-pressure and are helpful to understand the influence of different tube structures on spontaneous ignition when hydrogen is transported at high pressure.

Experimental Study on Flame Characteristics of Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet Fire

In this work cryogenic hydrogen fires at fixed pressures and various initial temperatures were investigated experimentally. Flame length width heat fluxes and temperatures in down-stream regions were measured for the scenarios with 1.6-3 mm jet nozzle 106 to 273 K 2-5 barabs. The results show that the flame size is related to not only the jet nozzle diameter but also the release pressure and initial temperature. The correlations of normalized flame length and width are proposed with the stagnation pressure and the ratio of ambient and stagnation temperatures. Under constant pressure the flame size total radiative power and radiation fraction increase with the decrease of temperature due to lower choked flow velocity and higher density of cryogenic hydrogen. The correlation of radiation fraction proposed by Molina et al. at room temperature is not suitable to predict the cryogenic hydrogen jet fires. Based on piecewise polynomial law
Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen Storage Technologies for Railway Engineering: A Review

According to the specific requirements of railway engineering a techno-economic comparison for onboard hydrogen storage technologies is conducted to discuss their feasibility and potentials for hydrogen-powered hybrid trains. Physical storage methods including compressed hydrogen (CH2 ) liquid hydrogen (LH2 ) and cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2 ) and material-based (chemical) storage methods such as ammonia liquid organic hydrogen carriages (LOHCs) and metal hydrides are carefully discussed in terms of their operational conditions energy capacity and economic costs. CH2 technology is the most mature now but its storage density cannot reach the final target which is the same problem for intermetallic compounds. In contrast LH2 CcH2 and complex hydrides are attractive for their high storage density. Nevertheless the harsh working conditions of complex hydrides hinder their vehicular application. Ammonia has advantages in energy capacity utilisation efficiency and cost especially being directly utilised by fuel cells. LOHCs are now considered as a potential candidate for hydrogen transport. Simplifying the dehydrogenation process is the important prerequisite for its vehicular employment. Recently increasing novel hydrogen-powered trains based on different hydrogen storage routes are being tested and optimised across the world. It can be forecasted that hydrogen energy will be a significant booster to railway decarbonisation.
Designing Hydrogen Recirculation Ejectors for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Systems

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a promising device in the fields of power generation energy storage aerospace and public transportation. The hydrogen recirculation ejector with the advantages of low cost high durability and no parasitic power is the key component of PEMFC systems. However it is challenging to design a hydrogen recirculation ejector to cover the wide operating conditions of PEMFC systems. In order to design an ejector for fuel cell systems a comprehensive understanding of ejector research is required. Consequently the state-of-the-art research work on the hydrogen recirculation ejector is analyzed including characteristics of the ejector in PEM fuel cell systems geometry design and optimization different types of ejectors and a comparison between them and system integration and control. Through a comprehensive analysis of ejectors further research suggestions on designing high-performance ejectors are presented.
Resource Assessment for Green Hydrogen Production in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has long been regarded as a major exporter of fossil fuel energy. As the global energy sector is undergoing an unprecedented transition to low-carbon solutions new emerging energy technologies such as hydrogen production require more different resource bases than present energy technologies. Kazakhstan needs to consider whether it has enough resources to stay competitive in energy markets undergoing an energy transition. Green hydrogen can be made from water electrolysis powered by low-carbon electricity sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. We provided the first resource assessment for green hydrogen production in Kazakhstan by focusing on three essential resources: water renewable electricity and critical raw materials. Our estimations showed that with the current plan of Kazakhstan to keep its water budget constant in the future producing 2–10 Mt green hydrogen would require reducing the water use of industry in Kazakhstan by 0.6–3% or 0.036–0.18 km3/year. This could be implemented by increasing the share of renewables in electricity generation and phasing out some of the water- and carbon-intensive industries. Renewable electricity potential in South and West Kazakhstan is sufficient to run electrolyzers up to 5700 and 1600 h/year for wind turbines and solar panels respectively. In our base case scenario 5 Mt green hydrogen production would require 50 GW solar and 67 GW wind capacity considering Kazakhstan's wind and solar capacity factors. This could convert into 28652 tons of nickel 15832 tons of titanium and many other critical raw materials. Although our estimations for critical raw materials were based on limited geological data Kazakhstan has access to the most critical raw materials to support original equipment manufacturers of low-carbon technologies in Kazakhstan and other countries. As new geologic exploration kicks off in Kazakhstan it is expected that more deposits of critical raw materials will be discovered to respond to their potential future needs for green hydrogen production.
Recent Advances in Hybrid Water Electrolysis for Energy-saving Hydrogen Production

Electricity-driven water splitting to convert water into hydrogen (H2) has been widely regarded as an efficient approach for H2 production. Nevertheless the energy conversion efficiency of it is greatly limited due to the disadvantage of the sluggish kinetic of oxidation evolution reaction (OER). To effectively address the issue a novel concept of hybrid water electrolysis has been developed for energy– saving H2 production. This strategy aims to replace the sluggish kinetics of OER by utilizing thermodynamically favorable organics oxidation reaction to replace OER. Herein recent advances in such water splitting system for boosting H2 evolution under low cell voltage are systematically summarized. Some notable progress of different organics oxidation reactions coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are discussed in detail. To facilitate the development of hybrid water electrolysis the major challenges and perspectives are also proposed.
Economic Operation Strategy of Integrated Hydrogen Energy System Considering the Uncertainty of PV Power Output

To address the negative influence caused by power randomness of distributed PV output on energy system’s economic operation in this work an economic operation strategy considering the uncertainty features of PV output has been designed and applied on an integrated hydrogen energy system. First the thermal system operation model and the thermoelectric output control model are precisely built for the integrated hydrogen energy system and the hydrogen-based fuel cell respectively. Then referring to the PV output prediction data the uncertainty of light intensity variation is analyzed to correct the PV output prediction curve. Finally a cost–benefit model for the optimal economic operation of the integrated hydrogen energy system including PV hydrogen fuel cell and cogeneration unit is designed with an objective function of achieving an optimal economic operation of the multi-energy coupling devices. The simulation tests validate that considering the influence of PV output uncertainty on hydrogen fuel cell output can make the system operation more reasonable which ensures the economic and reliable operation of hydrogen energy systems.
Transient Modeling and Performance Analysis of Hydrogen-Fueled Aero Engines

With the combustor burning hydrogen as well as the strongly coupled fuel and cooling system the configuration of a hydrogen-fueled aero engine is more complex than that of a conventional aero engine. The performance and especially the dynamic behavior of a hydrogen-fueled aero engine need to be fully understood for engine system design and optimization. In this paper both the transient modeling and performance analysis of hydrogen-fueled engines are presented. Firstly the models specific to the hydrogen-fueled engine components and systems including the hydrogen-fueled combustor the steam injection system a simplified model for a quick NOx emission assessment and the heat exchangers are developed and then integrated to a conventional engine models. The simulations with both Simulink and Speedgoat-based hardware in the loop system are carried out. Secondly the performance analysis is performed for a typical turbofan engine configuration CF6 and for the two hydrogen-fueled engine configurations ENABLEH2 and HySIITE which are currently under research and development by the European Union and Pratt & Whitney respectively. At last the simulation results demonstrate that the developed transient models can effectively reflect the characteristics of hydrogen burning heat exchanging and NOx emission for hydrogen-fueled engines. In most cases the hydrogen-fueled engines show lower specific fuel consumption lower turbine entry temperature and less NOx emissions compared with conventional engines. For example at max thrust state the advanced hydrogen-fueled engine can reduce the parameters mentioned above by about 68.5% 3.7% and 12.7% respectively (a mean value of two configurations).
Interchangeability of Hydrogen Injection in Zhejiang Natural Gas Pipelines as a Means to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

The blending of hydrogen gas into natural gas pipelines is an effective way of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. Due to the large differences in the calorific values of natural gas from different sources the calorific value of natural gas after mixing with hydrogen may not meet the quality requirements of natural gas and the quality of natural gas entering long-distance natural gas and urban gas pipelines also has different requirements. Therefore it is necessary to study the effect of multiple gas sources and different pipe network types on the differences in the calorific values of natural gas following hydrogen admixing. In this regard this study aimed to determine the quality requirements and proportions of hydrogen-mixed gas in natural gas pipelines at home and abroad and systematically determined the quality requirements for natural gas entering both long-distance natural gas and urban gas pipelines in combination with national standards. Taking the real calorific values of the gas supply cycle of seven atmospheric sources as an example the calorific and Wobbe Index values for different hydrogen admixture ratios in a one-year cycle were calculated. The results showed that under the requirement of natural gas interchangeability there were great differences in the proportions of natural gas mixed with hydrogen from different gas sources. When determining the proportion of hydrogen mixed with natural gas both the factors of different gas sources and the factors of the gas supply cycle should be considered.

Hollow CdS-Based Photocatalysts

In recent years photocatalytic technology driven by solar energy has been extensively investigated to ease energy crisis and environmental pollution. Nevertheless efficiency and stability of photocatalysts are still unsatisfactory. To address these issues design of advanced photocatalysts is important. Cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanomaterials are one of the promising photocatalysts. Among them hollow-structured CdS featured with enhanced light absorption ability large surface area abundant active sites for redox reactions and reduced diffusion distance of photogenerated carriers reveals a broad application prospect. Herein main synthetic strategies and formation mechanism of hollow CdS photocatalysts are summarized. Besides we comprehensively discuss the current development of hollow-structured CdS nanomaterials in photocatalytic applications including H2 production CO2 reduction and pollutant degradation. Finally brief conclusions and perspectives on the challenges and future directions for hollow CdS photocatalysts are proposed.
Operation Potential Evaluation of Multiple Hydrogen Production and Refueling Integrated Stations Under DC Interconnected Environment

Hydrogen production and refueling integrated station can play an important role in the development of hydrogen transportation and fuel cell vehicles and actively promote the energy transformation. By using DC system for hydrogen production and refueling the conversion links can be reduced and the system efficiency can be effectively improved. In this paper a new scheme of DC interconnection for hydrogen production and refueling integrated station is proposed and the modular modeling and operation capability evaluation method are proposed including the characteristic analysis of integrated station the modular modeling and evaluation method for multiple integrated stations under DC interconnection. The DC interconnection system of five integrated stations is constructed and operation capability improvement of integrated stations after adopting the innovative DC interconnection scheme is analyzed. On this basis the system simulation model based on MATLAB/Simulink and physical test platform are built to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.
Progress and Challenges on the Thermal Management of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Technologies: Fuel Cells, Electrolysers, and Supercapacitors

It is now well established that electrochemical systems can optimally perform only within a narrow range of temperature. Exposure to temperatures outside this range adversely affects the performance and lifetime of these systems. As a result thermal management is an essential consideration during the design and operation of electrochemical equipment and can heavily influence the success of electrochemical energy technologies. Recently significant attempts have been placed on the maturity of cooling technologies for electrochemical devices. Nonetheless the existing reviews on the subject have been primarily focused on battery cooling. Conversely heat transfer in other electrochemical systems commonly used for energy conversion and storage has not been subjected to critical reviews. To address this issue the current study gives an overview of the progress and challenges on the thermal management of different electrochemical energy devices including fuel cells electrolysers and supercapacitors. The physicochemical mechanisms of heat generation in these electrochemical devices are discussed in-depth. Physics of the heat transfer techniques currently employed for temperature control are then exposed and some directions for future studies are provided.
Black TiO2 for Solar Hydrogen Conversion

Titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) has been widely investigated for photocatalytic H2 evolution and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting since 1972. However its wide bandgap (3.0–3.2 eV) limits the optical absorption of TiO2 for sufficient utilization of solar energy. Blackening TiO2 has been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance its solar absorption and thus the photocatalytic and PEC activities and aroused widespread research interest. In this article we reviewed the recent progress of black TiO2 for photocatalytic H2 evolution and PEC water splitting along with detailed introduction to its unique structural features optical property charge carrier transfer property and related theoretical calculations. As summarized in this review article black TiO2 could be a promising candidate for photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen generation via water splitting and continuous efforts are deserved for improving its solar hydrogen efficiency.
Effect of Hydrogen on Very High Cycle Fatigue Behavior of a Low-strength Cr-Ni-Mo-V Steel Containing Micro-defects

The role of hydrogen in fatigue failure of low strength steels is not as well understood as of high strength steels in very high cycle fatigue regime. In this work axially cyclic tests on a low strength Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel with charged hydrogen were carried out up to the very high cycle fatigue regime under ultrasonic frequency to examine the degradation of fatigue strength and associated failure mechanisms. Results show that the S-N curves show a continuously decreasing mode and hydrogen-charged specimens have lower fatigue strength and shorter fatigue lifetime as compared with as-received specimens. It is concluded that the hydrogen trapped by inclusions drives interior micro-defects as dominant crack initiation site and has a clear link to the initiation and early growth of interior fatigue cracks.
The Role of the Argon and Helium Bath Gases on the Detonation Structure of H2/)2 Mixture

Recent modeling efforts of non-equilibrium effects in detonations have suggested that hydrogen-based detonations may be affected by vibrational non-equilibrium of the hydrogen and oxygen molecules effects which could explain discrepancies of cell sizes measured experimentally and calculated without relaxation effects. The present study addresses the role of vibrational relaxation in 2H2/O2 detonations by considering two-bath gases argon and helium. These two gases have the same thermodynamic and kinetic effects when relaxation is neglected. However due to the bath gases differences in molecular weight and reduced mass differences which affect the molecular collisions relaxation rates can be changed by approximately 50-70%. Experiments were performed in a narrow channel in mixtures of 2H2/O2/7Ar and 2H2/O2/7He to evaluate the role of the bath gas on detonation cellular structures. The experiments showed differences in velocity deficits and cell sizes for experimental conditions keeping the induction zone length constant in each of the mixtures. These differences were negligible in sensitive mixtures but increased with the increase in velocity deficits while the cell sizes approaching the channel dimensions. Near the limits differences of cell size in two mixtures approached a factor of 2. These differences were however reconciled by accounting for the viscous losses to the tube walls evaluated using a modified version of Mirels' laminar boundary layer theory and generalized Chapman-Jouguet theory for eigenvalue detonations. The experiments suggest that there is an influence of relaxation effects on the cellular structure of detonations which is more sensitive to wall boundary conditions. However the previous works showed that the impact of vibrational non-equilibrium in a mixture of H2/Air is more visible due to the effects of N2 in the air slowest to relax. Previous discrepancies suggested to be indicative of relaxation effects should be reevaluated by the inclusion of wall loss effects.
Molybdenum Carbide Microcrystals: Efficient and Stable Catalyst for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution From Water in The Presence Of Dye Sensitizer

Rod-like molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) microcrystals were obtained from the pyrolysis of Mo-containing organic-inorganic hybrid composite. We investigated the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of Mo2C by constructing a Mo2C-dye sensitizer photocatalyst system. A high quantum efficiency of 29.7% was obtained at 480 nm. Moreover Mo2C catalyst can be easily recycled by simple filtration.
Development of Analysis Program for Direct Containment Heating

Direct containment heating (DCH) is one of the potential factors leading to early containment failure. DCH is closely related to safety analysis and containment performance evaluation of nuclear power plants. In this study a DCH prediction program was developed to analyze the DCH loads of containment vessel. The phenomenological model of debris dispersal metal oxidation reaction debris-atmospheric heat transfer and hydrogen jet burn was established. Code assessment was performed by comparing with several separate effect tests and integral effect tests. The comparison between the predicted results and experimental data shows that the program can predict the key parameters such as peak pressure temperature and hydrogen production in containment well and for most comparisons the relative errors can be maintained within 20%. Among them the prediction uncertainty of hydrogen production is slightly larger. The analysis shows that the main sources of the error are the difference of time scale and the oxidation of cavity debris.
From Renewable Energy to Sustainable Protein Sources: Advancement, Challenges, and Future Roadmaps

The concerns over food security and protein scarcity driven by population increase and higher standards of living have pushed scientists toward finding new protein sources. A considerable proportion of resources and agricultural lands are currently dedicated to proteinaceous feed production to raise livestock and poultry for human consumption. The 1st generation of microbial protein (MP) came into the market as land-independent proteinaceous feed for livestock and aquaculture. However MP may be a less sustainable alternative to conventional feeds such as soybean meal and fishmeal because this technology currently requires natural gas and synthetic chemicals. These challenges have directed researchers toward the production of 2nd generation MP by integrating renewable energies anaerobic digestion nutrient recovery biogas cleaning and upgrading carbon-capture technologies and fermentation. The fermentation of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) i.e. two protein rich microorganisms has shown a great potential on the one hand to upcycle effluents from anaerobic digestion into protein rich biomass and on the other hand to be coupled to renewable energy systems under the concept of Power-to-X. This work compares various production routes for 2nd generation MP by reviewing the latest studies conducted in this context and introducing the state-of-the-art technologies hoping that the findings can accelerate and facilitate upscaling of MP production. The results show that 2nd generation MP depends on the expansion of renewable energies. In countries with high penetration of renewable electricity such as Nordic countries off-peak surplus electricity can be used within MP-industry by supplying electrolytic H2 which is the driving factor for both MOB and HOB-based MP production. However nutrient recovery technologies are the heart of the 2nd generation MP industry as they determine the process costs and quality of the final product. Although huge attempts have been made to date in this context some bottlenecks such as immature nutrient recovery technologies less efficient fermenters with insufficient gas-to-liquid transfer and costly electrolytic hydrogen production and storage have hindered the scale up of MP production. Furthermore further research into techno-economic feasibility and life cycle assessment (LCA) of coupled technologies is still needed to identify key points for improvement and thereby secure a sustainable production system.
A Review of Ni Based Powder Catalyst for Urea Oxidation in Assisting Water Splitting Reaction

Water splitting has been regarded as a sustainable and environmentally-friendly technique to realize green hydrogen generation while more energy is consumed due to the high overpotentials required for the anode oxygen evolution reaction. Urea electrooxidation an ideal substitute is thus received increasing attention in assisting water-splitting reactions. Note that highly efficient catalysts are still required to drive urea oxidation and the facile generation of high valence state species is significant in the reaction based on the electrochemical-chemical mechanisms. The high cost and rareness make the noble metal catalysts impossible for further consideration in large-scale application. Ni-based catalysts are very promising due to their cheap price facile structure tuning good compatibility and easy active phase formation. In the light of the significant advances made recently herein we reviewed the recent advances of Ni-based powder catalysts for urea oxidation in assisting water-splitting reaction. The fundamental of urea oxidation is firstly presented to clarify the mechanism of urea-assisted water splitting and then the prevailing evaluation indicators are briefly expressed based on the electrochemical measurements. The catalyst design principle including synergistic effect electronic effect defect construction and surface reconstruction as well as the main fabrication approaches are presented and the advances of various Ni-based powder catalysts for urea assisted water splitting are summarized and discussed. The problems and challenges are also concluded for the Ni-based powder catalysts fabrication the performance evaluation and their application. Considering the key influence factors for catalytic process and their application attention should be given to structure-property relationship deciphering novel Ni-based powder catalysts development and their construction in the real device; specifically the effort should be directed to the Ni-based powder catalyst with multi-functions to simultaneously promote the fundamental steps and high anti-corrosion ability by revealing the local structure reconstruction as well as the integration in the practical application. We believe the current summarization will be instructive and helpful for the Ni-based powder catalysts development and understanding their catalytic action for urea-assisted hydrogen generation via water splitting technique.
Integrating a Top-Gas Recycling and CO2 Electrolysis Process for H2-Rich Gas Injection and Reduce CO2 Emissions from an Ironmaking Blast Furnace

Introducing CO2 electrochemical conversion technology to the iron-making blast furnace not only reduces CO2 emissions but also produces H2 as a byproduct that can be used as an auxiliary reductant to further decrease carbon consumption and emissions. With adequate H2 supply to the blast furnace the injection of H2 is limited because of the disadvantageous thermodynamic characteristics of the H2 reduction reaction in the blast furnace. This paper presents thermodynamic analysis of H2 behaviour at different stages with the thermal requirement consideration of an iron-making blast furnace. The effect of injecting CO2 lean top gas and CO2 conversion products H2–CO gas through the raceway and/or shaft tuyeres are investigated under different operating conditions. H2 utilisation efficiency and corresponding injection volume are studied by considering different reduction stages. The relationship between H2 injection and coke rate is established. Injecting 7.9–10.9 m3/tHM of H2 saved 1 kg/tHM coke rate depending on injection position. Compared with the traditional blast furnace injecting 80 m3/tHM of H2 with a medium oxygen enrichment rate (9%) and integrating CO2 capture and conversion reduces CO2 emissions from 534 to 278 m3/tHM. However increasing the hydrogen injection amount causes this iron-making process to consume more energy than a traditional blast furnace does.
Spherically Expanding Flame Simulations in Cantera Using a Lagrangian Formulation

A Lagrangian-based one-dimensional approach has been developed using Cantera to study the dynamics of spherically expanding flames. The detailed reaction model USC-Mech II has been employed to examine flame propagating in hydrogen-air mixtures. In the first part our approach has been validated against laminar flame speed and Markstein number data from the literature. It was shown that the laminar flame speed was predicted within 5% on average but that discrepancies were observed for the Markstein number especially for rich mixtures. In the second part a detailed analysis of the thermo-chemical dynamics along the path of Lagrangian particles propagating in stretched flames was performed. For mixtures with negative Markstein lengths it was found that at high stretch rates the mixture entering the reaction-dominated period is less lean with respect to the initial mixture than at low stretch rate. This induces a faster rate of chemical heat release and of active radical production which results in a higher flame propagation speed. Opposite effects were observed for mixtures with positive Markstein lengths for which slower flame propagation was observed at high stretch rates compared to low stretch rates."
Low Temperature Autoignition of Diesel Fuel Under Dual Operation with Hydrogen and Hydrogen-carriers

While electrification of light duty vehicles is becoming a real solution to abate local pollutant as well as greenhouse gases emission heavy duty applications (such as long distance freight and maritime transport) will keep requiring fuel-based propulsion systems. In these sectors dominated by compression ignition engines research on alternative biofuels and new combustion modes is still highly necessary. Dual-fuel combustion appears as a very promising concept to replace conventional diesel fuel by sustainable ones. Among the latter hydrogen-derived fuels (the so-called electrofuels or e-fuels) are maybe the most interesting. This work addresses the effect of partial substitution of diesel fuel by hydrogen and hydrogen-carriers (ammonia and methane) on the autoignition process under low temperature conditions. Tests were carried out in a constant volume combustion chamber at different temperatures (535 600 and 650 ◦C) and pressures (11 16 and 21 bar). While the cool flames timing and intensity was only slightly affected by the low reactivity fuel energy content the main ignition was delayed this effect being much more noticeable for ammonia followed by hydrogen and finally methane. Kinetic simulations showed a clear competition for active radicals between both fuels (diesel and low reactivity fuel). The combustion duration also increased with the hydrogen or hydrogen-carrier content which greatly points to the need of modifications in the injection strategy of compression ignition engines operating under dual mode. A correlation was proposed for estimating the autoignition delay time for dual-fuel lean combustion at low temperature.
Numerical Investigation on the Flame Structure and CO/NO Formations of the Laminar Premixed Biogas–Hydrogen Impinging Flame in the Wall Vicinity

The near-wall flame structure and pollutant emissions of the laminar premixed biogashydrogen impinging flame were simulated with a detailed chemical mechanism. The spatial distributions of the temperature critical species and pollutant emissions near the wall of the laminar premixed biogas–hydrogen impinging flame were obtained and investigated quantitatively. The results show that the cold wall can influence the premixed combustion process in the flame front which is close to the wall but does not touch the wall and results in the obviously declined concentrations of OH H and O radicals in the premixed combustion zone. After flame quenching a high CO concentration can be observed near the wall at equivalence ratios (ϕ) of both 0.8 and 1.2. Compared with that at ϕ = 1.0 more unburned fuel is allowed to pass through the quenching zone and generate CO after flame quenching near the wall thanks to the suppressed fuel consumption rate near the wall and the excess fuel in the unburned gases at ϕ = 0.8 and 1.2 respectively. By isolating the formation routes of NO production it is found that the fast-rising trend of NO concentration near the wall in the post flame region at ϕ = 0.8 is attributed to the NO transportation from the NNH route primarily while the prompt NO production accounts for more than 90% of NO generation in the wall vicinity at ϕ = 1.2. It is thus known that thanks to the effectively increased surface-to-volume ratio the premixed combustion process in the downsized chamber will be affected more easily by the amplified cooling effects of the cold wall which will contribute to the declined combustion efficiency increased CO emission and improved prompt NO production.
Exergy Estimate of a Novel Hybrid Solar-gas Power and Organic Rankine Cycle-based Hydrogen-production System

This study proposes a novel hybrid solar-gas power and hydrogen-production system which is comprised by the solar tower thermal system gas-steam turbine combined cycle and organic Rankine cycle-based hydrogen-production system. Based on the Ebsilon code the operation processes of the hybrid system are simulated. The results show that the output power and electric efficiency of the hybrid system are 103.9 MW and 41.3% and the daily hydrogen output is 62.2 kg. The operation simulation results of the hybrid system reveal that the gas-steam combined cycle and solar island can both achieve stable operations and the power generation section and hydrogen-production device can both work effectively which means the hybrid system is technically feasible. The exergy estimate results of the hybrid system show that the combustion chamber and solar receiver have the two largest exergy destructions which are 56.5 MW and 45.3 MW. That means the performances of the two components can be further improved. For the hydrogen-production system the exergy destructions of the proton exchange membrane electrolyzer turbine condenser and evaporator of the organic Rankine cycle are 0.156 MW 0.111 MW 2.338 MW and 1.891 MW and the corresponding exergy efficiencies are 51.2% 92.6% 80.7% and 79.5% respectively.
Reduction Kinetics of Hematite Powder in Hydrogen Atmosphere at Moderate Temperatures

Hydrogen has received much attention in the development of direct reduction of iron ores because hydrogen metallurgy is one of the effective methods to reduce CO2 emission in the iron and steel industry. In this study the kinetic mechanism of reduction of hematite particles was studied in a hydrogen atmosphere. The phases and morphological transformation of hematite during the reduction were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. It was found that porous magnetite was formed and the particles were degraded during the reduction. Finally sintering of the reduced iron and wüstite retarded the reductive progress. The average activation energy was extracted to be 86.1 kJ/mol and 79.1 kJ/mol according to Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Starink methods respectively. The reaction fraction dependent values of activation energy were suggested to be the result of multi-stage reactions during the reduction process. Furthermore the variation of activation energy value was smoothed after heat treatment of hematite particles.
Analysis of Hydrogen Gas Injection at Various Compositions in an Existing Natural Gas Pipeline

The lack of hydrogen (H2) transportation infrastructure restricts the development of the H2 industry. Owing to the high investment of building specific facilities using existing natural gas (NG) pipelines to transport a blend of H2 and NG (H2NG) is a viable means of transportation and approach for large-scale long-time storage. However variation in the thermo-physical properties of an H2NG blend will impact the performance of pipeline appliances. To address the gaps in H2 transmission via an NG system in the context of energy consumption in the present paper a one-dimensional pipeline model is proposed to predict the blended flow in a real existing pipeline (Shan–Jing I China). The data of NG components were derived from real gas fields. Furthermore the influence of H2 fractions on pipeline energy coefficient and the layout of pressurization stations are comprehensively analyzed. In addition the case of intermediate gas injection is investigated and the effects of injection positions are studied. This study serves as a useful reference for the design of an H2NG pipeline system. The present study reveals that with the increasing in H2 fraction the distance between pressure stations increases. Furthermore when the arrangement of original pressure stations is maintained overpressure occur. Intermediate gas injection results in the inlet pressure of subsequent pressurization stations reducing. Using existing pipeline network to transport H2NG it is necessary to make appropriate adjustment.
Production of Hydrogen from Offshore Wind in China and Cost-competitive Supply to Japan

The Japanese government has announced a commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It envisages an important role for hydrogen in the nation’s future energy economy. This paper explores the possibility that a significant source for this hydrogen could be produced by electrolysis fueled by power generated from offshore wind in China. Hydrogen could be delivered to Japan either as liquid or bound to a chemical carrier such as toluene or as a component of ammonia. The paper presents an analysis of factors determining the ultimate cost for this hydrogen including expenses for production storage conversion transport and treatment at the destination. It concludes that the Chinese source could be delivered at a volume and cost consistent with Japan’s idealized future projections.
An Effective Optimisation Method for Coupled Wind–Hydrogen Power Generation Systems Considering Scalability

A wind–hydrogen coupled power generation system can effectively reduce the power loss caused by wind power curtailment and further improve the ability of the energy system to accommodate renewable energy. However the feasibility and economy of deploying such a power generation system have not been validated through large‐scale practical applications and the economic comparison between regions and recommendations on construction are still lacking. In order to solve the aforementioned problems this paper establishes an economic analysis model for the wind–hydrogen coupled power generation system and proposes a linear optimisation‐based priority analysis method focusing on the major net present value for regional energy system as well as a cost priority analysis method for hydrogen production within sample power plants. The case study proves the effectiveness of the proposed analysis methods and the potential to develop wind–hydrogen coupled power generation systems in various provinces is compared based on the national wind power data in recent years. This provides recommendations for the future pilot construction and promotion of wind–hydrogen coupled power generation systems in China.
Hydrogen Refueling Stations and Carbon Emission Reduction of Coastal Expressways: A Deployment Model and Multi-Scenario Analysis

Hydrogen is considered to the ultimate solution to achieve carbon emission reduction due to its wide sources and high calorific value as well as non-polluting renewable and storable advantages. This paper starts from the coastal areas uses offshore wind power hydrogen production as the hydrogen source and focuses on the combination of hydrogen supply chain network design and hydrogen expressway hydrogen refueling station layout optimization. It proposes a comprehensive mathematical model of hydrogen supply chain network based on cost analysis which determined the optimal size and location of hydrogen refueling stations on hydrogen expressways in coastal areas. Under the multi-scenario and multi-case optimization results the location of the hydrogen refueling station can effectively cover the road sections of each case and the unit hydrogen cost of the hydrogen supply chain network is between 11.8 and 15.0 USD/kgH2 . Meanwhile it was found that the transportation distance and the number of hydrogen sources play a decisive role on the cost of hydrogen in the supply chain network and the location of hydrogen sources have a decisive influence on the location of hydrogen refueling stations. In addition carbon emission reduction results of hydrogen supply chain network show that the carbon emission reduction per unit hydrogen production is 15.51 kgCO2/kgH2 at the production side. The CO2 emission can be reduced by 68.3 kgCO2/km and 6.35 kgCO2/kgH2 per unit mileage and per unit hydrogen demand at the application side respectively. The layout planning utilization of hydrogen energy expressway has a positive impact on energy saving and emission reduction.

Carbon dioxide is an important medium of the global carbon cycle and has the dual properties of realizing the conversion of organic matter in the ecosystem and causing the greenhouse effect. The fixed or available carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is defined as “gray carbon” while the carbon dioxide that cannot be fixed or used and remains in the atmosphere is called “black carbon”. Carbon neutral is the consensus of human development but its implementation still faces many challenges in politics resources technology market and energy structure etc. It is proposed that carbon replacement carbon emission reduction carbon sequestration and carbon cycle are the four main approaches to achieve carbon neutral among which carbon replacement is the backbone. New energy has become the leading role of the third energy conversion and will dominate carbon neutral in the future. Nowadays solar energy wind energy hydropower nuclear energy and hydrogen energy are the main forces of new energy helping the power sector to achieve low carbon emissions. “Green hydrogen” is the reserve force of new energy helping further reduce carbon emissions in industrial and transportation fields. Artificial carbon conversion technology is a bridge connecting new energy and fossil energy effectively reducing the carbon emissions of fossil energy. It is predicted that the peak value of China’s carbon dioxide emissions will reach 110108 t in 2030. The study predicts that China's carbon emissions will drop to 22108 t 33108 t and 44108 t respectively in 2060 according to three scenarios of high medium and low levels. To realize carbon neutral in China seven implementation suggestions have been put forward to build a new “three small and one large” energy structure in China and promote the realization of China's energy independence strategy.
Numerical Study on Protective Measures for a Skid-Mounted Hydrogen Refueling Station

Hydrogen refueling stations are one of the key infrastructure components for the hydrogen-fueled economy. Skid-mounted hydrogen refueling stations (SHRSs) can be more easily commercialized due to their smaller footprints and lower costs compared to stationary hydrogen refueling stations. The present work modeled hydrogen explosions in a skid-mounted hydrogen refueling station to predict the overpressures for hydrogen-air mixtures and investigate the protective effects for different explosion vent layouts and protective wall distances. The results show that the explosive vents with the same vent area have similar overpressure reduction effects. The layout of the explosion vent affects the flame shape. Explosion venting can effectively reduce the inside maximum overpressure by 61.8%. The protective walls can reduce the overpressures but the protective walls should not be too close to the SHRS because high overpressures are generated inside the walls due to the confined shock waves. The protective wall with a distance of 6 m can effectively protect the surrounding people and avoid the secondary overpressure damage to the container.
Optimal Planning of Hybrid Electricity–Hydrogen Energy Storage System Considering Demand Response

In recent years the stability of the distribution network has declined due to the large proportion of the uses of distributed generation (DG) with the continuous development of renewable energy power generation technology. Meanwhile the traditional distribution network operation mode cannot keep the balance of the source and load. The operation mode of the active distribution network (ADN) can effectively reduce the decline in operation stability caused by the high proportion of DG. Therefore this work proposes a bi-layer model for the planning of the electricity–hydrogen hybrid energy storage system (ESS) considering demand response (DR) for ADN. The upper layer takes the minimum load fluctuation maximum user purchase cost satisfaction and user comfort as the goals. Based on the electricity price elasticity matrix model the optimal electricity price formulation strategy is obtained for the lower ESS planning. In the lower layer the optimal ESS planning scheme is obtained with the minimum life cycle cost (LCC) of ESS the voltage fluctuation of ADN and the load fluctuation as the objectives. Finally the MOPSO algorithm is used to test the model and the correctness of the proposed method is verified by the extended IEEE-33 node test system. The simulation results show that the fluctuation in the voltage and load is reduced by 62.13% and 37.06% respectively.
Low-carbon Economic Dispatch of Power Systems Based on Mobile Hydrogen Storage

To alleviate the global warming crisis carbon reduction is an inevitable trend of sustainable development. The energy carrier with Hydrogen (H2) is considered to be one of the promising choices for realizing a low-carbon economy. With the increasing penetration level of wind power generation and for well-balancing wind generation fluctuations this paper proposes a low-carbon economic dispatch method for power systems based on mobile hydrogen storage(MHS). The wind power surplus during off-peak load periods is first utilized to generate green H2. Afterward the green H2 is optimally transported to multiple hydrogen storage(HS) stations for generating power electricity by flexibly controlling the electrolysis(EL) methanation(ME) carbon capture(CCS) and H2 power generation processes in such a way the wind power is coordinated with the hydrogen production transport and utilization to reduce the total carbon emission and minimize the operation cost of power systems. Finally the proposed power system low-carbon economic dispatch model is verified by case studies.
