Faraday’s Efficiency Modeling of a Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Based on Experimental Data

In electrolyzers Faraday’s efficiency is a relevant parameter to assess the amount of hydrogen generated according to the input energy and energy efficiency. Faraday’s efficiency expresses the faradaic losses due to the gas crossover current. The thickness of the membrane and operating conditions (i.e. temperature gas pressure) may affect the Faraday’s efficiency. The developed models in the literature are mainly focused on alkaline electrolyzers and based on the current and temperature change. However the modeling of the effect of gas pressure on Faraday’s efficiency remains a major concern. In proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers the thickness of the used membranes is very thin enabling decreasing ohmic losses and the membrane to operate at high pressure because of its high mechanical resistance. Nowadays high-pressure hydrogen production is mandatory to make its storage easier and to avoid the use of an external compressor. However when increasing the hydrogen pressure the hydrogen crossover currents rise particularly at low current densities. Therefore faradaic losses due to the hydrogen crossover increase. In this article experiments are performed on a commercial PEM electrolyzer to investigate Faraday’s efficiency based on the current and hydrogen pressure change. The obtained results have allowed modeling the effects of Faraday’s efficiency by a simple empirical model valid for the studied PEM electrolyzer stack. The comparison between the experiments and the model shows very good accuracy in replicating Faraday’s efficiency.
Life Cycle Performance of Hydrogen Production via Agro-Industrial Residue Gasification—A Small Scale Power Plant Study

This study evaluates the environmental profile of a real biomass-based hydrogen production small-scale (1 MWth) system composed of catalytic candle indirectly heated steam gasifier coupled with zinc oxide (ZnO) guard bed water gas shift (WGS) and pressure swing absorber (PSA) reactors. Environmental performance from cradle-to-gate was investigated by life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Biomass production shows high influence over all impact categories. In the syngas production process the main impacts observed are global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). Flue gas emission from gasifier burner has the largest proportion of total GWP. The residual off gas use in internal combustion engine (ICE) leads to important environmental savings for all categories. Hydrogen renewability score is computed as 90% due to over 100% decline in non-renewable energy demand. Sensitivity analysis shows that increase in hydrogen production efficiency does not necessarily result in decrease in environmental impacts. In addition economic allocation of environmental charges increases all impact categories especially AP and photochemical oxidation (POFP).
Renewable Energy, Carbon Capture & Sequestration and Hydrogen Solutions as Enabling Technologies for Reduced CO2 Energy Transition at a National Level: An Application to the 2030 Italian National Energy Scenarios

Globally climate change fossil fuel depletion and greenhouse emissions are fundamental problems requiring massive effort from the international scientific community to be addressed and solved. Following the Clean Energy for all Europeans Package (CEP) guidelines the Italian Government has established challenging and tight objectives both on energy and climate matter to be targeted by 2030. Accordingly research activities on different topics are carried out in Italy looking at the installation of intermittent renewable energy systems (IRES) implementation of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) on existing power plants and hydrogen technology and infrastructure penetration for accomplishing the end-users demands. The optimal integration of the above-mentioned technologies is one of the most effective weapons to address these objectives. The paper investigates different energy scenarios for meeting the Italian National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) 2030 targets showing how the combined implementation of around +12 GW of IRES and +6 GW of electrolyzers compared to the national estimates simultaneously with the CCS of around 10 Mt of CO2 per year can reduce the CO2 emissions up to about 247 Mt/year. Thanks to the adoption of the well-established software platform EnergyPlan the integration of IRES plants CCS and hydrogen-based technologies have been explored and the most successful results for concurrently reducing the impact of industrial transport residential and energy sectors and mitigating the greenhouse emissions substantially relies on the diversifications. Results show both the technical and economic convenience of a 2030 energy scenario which implements properly hydrogen IRES and CCS penetration in the energy system meeting the NECP 2030 targets and maintaining both the over-generation of the power plants below 5 TWh and the initial capital expenditure to be sustained for this scenario to occur below +80% compared to the 2019 energy scenario.
Investigating Hydrogen-Based Non-Conventional Storage for PV Power in Eco-Energetic Optimization of a Multi-Energy System

Through the integration of multiple energy carriers with related technologies multi-energy systems (MES) can exploit the synergies coming from their interplay for several benefits towards decarbonization. In such a context inclusion of Power-to-X technologies in periods of excess renewable electricity supply removes the need for curtailment of renewable electricity generation. In order to achieve the environmental benefits of MES without neglecting their economic feasibility the optimal design problem is as crucial as challenging and requires the adoption of a multi-objective approach. This paper extends the results of a previous work by investigating hydrogen-based non-conventional storage for PV power in the eco-energetic optimization of an MES. The system under study consists of a reversible fuel cell (r-SOC) photovoltaic (PV) electric heat pump absorption chiller and thermal storage and allows satisfying the multi-energy needs of a residential end-user. A multi-objective linear problem is established to find the optimal MES configuration including the sizes of the involved technologies with the goal of reducing the total annual cost and the fossil primary energy input. Simulation results are compared with those obtained in previous work with a conventional nanogrid where a combined heat and power (CHP) system with gas-fired internal combustion engine and a battery were present instead of an r-SOC. The optimized configuration of the non-conventional nanogrid allows achieving a maximum primary energy reduction amounting to 66.3% compared to the conventional nanogrid. In the face of the environmental benefits the non-conventional nanogrid leads to an increase in total annual costs which compared to the conventional nanogrid is in the range of 41–65%.
Combustion of Hydrogen Enriched Methane and Biogases Containing Hydrogen in a Controlled Auto-Ignition Engine

The paper describes a numerical study of the combustion of hydrogen enriched methane and biogases containing hydrogen in a Controlled Auto Ignition engine (CAI). A single cylinder CAI engine is modelled with Chemkin to predict engine performance comparing the fuels in terms of indicated mean effective pressure engine efficiency and pollutant emissions. The effects of hydrogen and carbon dioxide on the combustion process are evaluated using the GRI-Mech 3.0 detailed radical chain reactions mechanism. A parametric study performed by varying the temperature at the start of compression and the equivalence ratio allows evaluating the temperature requirements for all fuels; moreover the effect of hydrogen enrichment on the auto-ignition process is investigated. The results show that at constant initial temperature hydrogen promotes the ignition which then occurs earlier as a consequence of higher chemical reactivity. At a fixed indicated mean effective pressure hydrogen presence shifts the operating range towards lower initial gas temperature and lower equivalence ratio and reduces NOx emissions. Such reduction somewhat counter-intuitive if compared with similar studies on spark-ignition engines is the result of operating the engine at lower initial gas temperatures.
An On-Board Pure H2 Supply System Based on A Membrane Reactor for A Fuel Cell Vehicle: A Theoretical Study

In this novel conceptual fuel cell vehicle (FCV) an on-board CH4 steam reforming (MSR) membrane reformer (MR) is considered to generate pure H2 for supplying a Fuel Cell (FC) system as an alternative to the conventional automobile engines. Two on-board tanks are forecast to store CH4 and water useful for feeding both a combustion chamber (designed to provide the heat required by the system) and a multi tubes Pd-Ag MR useful to generate pure H2 via methane steam reforming (MSR) reaction. The pure H2 stream is hence supplied to the FC. The flue gas stream coming out from the combustion chamber is used to preheat the MR feed stream by two heat exchangers and one evaporator. Then this theoretical work demonstrates by a 1-D model the feasibility of the MR based system in order to generate 5 kg/day of pure H2 required by the FC system for cruising a vehicle for around 500 km. The calculated CH4 and water consumptions were 50 and 70 kg respectively per 1 kg of pure H2. The on-board MR based FCV presents lower CO2 emission rates than a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle also resulting in a more environmentally friendly solution.
Hydrogen Role in the Valorization of Integrated Steelworks Process Off-gases through Methane and Methanol Syntheses

The valorization of integrated steelworks process off-gases as feedstock for synthesizing methane and methanol is in line with European Green Deal challenges. However this target can be generally achieved only through process off-gases enrichment with hydrogen and use of cutting-edge syntheses reactors coupled to advanced control systems. These aspects are addressed in the RFCS project i3 upgrade and the central role of hydrogen was evident from the first stages of the project. First stationary scenario analyses showed that the required hydrogen amount is significant and existing renewable hydrogen production technologies are not ready to satisfy the demand in an economic perspective. The poor availability of low-cost green hydrogen as one of the main barriers for producing methane and methanol from process off-gases is further highlighted in the application of an ad-hoc developed dispatch controller for managing hydrogen intensified syntheses in integrated steelworks. The dispatch controller considers both economic and environmental impacts in the cost function and although significant environmental benefits are obtainable by exploiting process off-gases in the syntheses the current hydrogen costs highly affect the dispatch controller decisions. This underlines the need for big scale green hydrogen production processes and dedicated green markets for hydrogen-intensive industries which would ensure easy access to this fundamental gas paving the way for a C-lean and more sustainable steel production.
True Cost of Solar Hydrogen

Green hydrogen will be an essential part of the future 100% sustainable energy and industry system. Up to one-third of the required solar and wind electricity would eventually be used for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen increasing the cumulative electrolyzer capacity to about 17 TWel by 2050. The key method applied in this research is a learning curve approach for the key technologies i.e. solar photovoltaics (PV) and water electrolyzers and levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Sensitivities for the hydrogen demand and various input parameters are considered. Electrolyzer capital expenditure (CAPEX) for a large utility-scale system is expected to decrease from the current 400 €/kWel to 240 €/kWel by 2030 and to 80 €/kWel by 2050. With the continuing solar PV cost decrease this will lead to an LCOH decrease from the current 31–81 €/ MWhH2LHV (1.0–2.7 €/kgH2) to 20–54 €/MWhH2LHV (0.7–1.8 €/kgH2) by 2030 and 10–27 €/MWhH2LHV (0.3–0.9 €/kgH2) by 2050 depending on the location. The share of PV electricity cost in the LCOH will increase from the current 63% to 74% by 2050.
Operation of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Based Power System with Ammonia as a Fuel: Experimental Test and System Design

Ammonia has strong potentialities as sustainable fuel for energy applications. NH3 is carbon free and can be synthetized from renewable energy sources (RES). In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells NH3 reacts electrochemically thereby avoiding the production of typical combustion pollutants such as NOx. In this study an ammonia-fueled solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) system design is proposed and a thermodynamic model is developed to evaluate its performance. A SOFC short stack was operated with NH3 in a wide range of conditions. Experimental results are implemented in the thermodynamic model. Electrical efficiency of 52.1% based on ammonia Lower Heating Value is calculated at a net power density of 0.36 W cmFC −2 . The operating conditions of the after burner and of the ammonia decomposition reactor are studied by varying the values of specific parameters. The levelized cost of energy of 0.221 $ kWh−1 was evaluated as introduced by the International Energy Agency for a system that operates at nominal conditions and at a reference power output of 100 kW. This supports the feasibility of ammonia-fueled SOFC systems with reference to the carbon free energy market specifically considering the potential development of green ammonia production.
On the Technology of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Energy Systems for Stationary Power Generation: A Review

This paper presents a comprehensive overview on the current status of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) energy systems technology with a deep insight into the techno-energy performance. In recent years SOFCs have received growing attention in the scientific landscape of high efficiency energy technologies. They are fuel flexible highly efficient and environmentally sustainable. The high working temperature makes it possible to work in cogeneration and drive downstream bottomed cycles such as Brayton and Hirn/Rankine ones thus configuring the hybrid system of a SOFC/turbine with very high electric efficiency. Fuel flexibility makes SOFCs independent from pure hydrogen feeding since hydrocarbons can be fed directly to the SOFC and then converted to a hydrogen rich stream by the internal thermochemical processes. SOFC is also able to convert carbon monoxide electrochemically thus contributing to energy production together with hydrogen. SOFCs are much considered for being supplied with biofuels especially biogas and syngas so that biomass gasifiers/SOFC integrated systems contribute to the “waste to energy” chain with a significant reduction in pollution. The paper also deals with the analysis of techno-energy performance by means of ad hoc developed numerical modeling in relation to the main operating parameters. Ample prominence is given to the aspect of fueling emphasizing fuel processing with a deep discussion on the impurities and undesired phenomena that SOFCs suffer. Constituent materials geometry and design methods for the balance of plant were studied. A wide analysis was dedicated to the hybrid system of the SOFC/turbine and to the integrated system of the biomass gasifier/SOFC. Finally an overview of SOFC system manufacturing companies on SOFC research and development worldwide and on the European roadmap was made to reflect the interest in this technology which is an important signal of how communities are sensitive toward clean low carbon and efficient technologies and therefore to provide a decisive and firm impulse to the now outlined energy transition.
Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Analysis of an Innovative Biogas Membrane Reformer for Hydrogen Production

This work investigates the environmental and economic performances of a membrane reactor for hydrogen production from raw biogas. Potential benefits of the innovative technology are compared against reference hydrogen production processes based on steam (or autothermal) reforming water gas shift reactors and a pressure swing adsorption unit. Both biogas produced by landfill and anaerobic digestion are considered to evaluate the impact of biogas composition. Starting from the thermodynamic results the environmental analysis is carried out using environmental Life cycle assessment (LCA). Results show that the adoption of the membrane reactor increases the system efficiency by more than 20 percentage points with respect to the reference cases. LCA analysis shows that the innovative BIONICO system performs better than reference systems when biogas becomes a limiting factor for hydrogen production to satisfy market demand as a higher biogas conversion efficiency can potentially substitute more hydrogen produced by fossil fuels (natural gas). However when biogas is not a limiting factor for hydrogen production the innovative system can perform either similar or worse than reference systems as in this case impacts are largely dominated by grid electric energy demand and component use rather than conversion efficiency. Focusing on the economic results hydrogen production cost shows lower value with respect to the reference cases (4 €/kgH2 vs 4.2 €/kgH2) at the same hydrogen delivery pressure of 20 bar. Between landfill and anaerobic digestion cases the latter has the lower costs as a consequence of the higher methane content.
Integration of Renewable Hydrogen Production in Steelworks Off-Gases for the Synthesis of Methanol and Methane

The steel industry is among the highest carbon-emitting industrial sectors. Since the steel production process is already exhaustively optimized alternative routes are sought in order to increase carbon efficiency and reduce these emissions. During steel production three main carbon-containing off-gases are generated: blast furnace gas coke oven gas and basic oxygen furnace gas. In the present work the addition of renewable hydrogen by electrolysis to those steelworks off-gases is studied for the production of methane and methanol. Different case scenarios are investigated using AspenPlusTM flowsheet simulations which differ on the end-product the feedstock flowrates and on the production of power. Each case study is evaluated in terms of hydrogen and electrolysis requirements carbon conversion hydrogen consumption and product yields. The findings of this study showed that the electrolysis requirements surpass the energy content of the steelwork’s feedstock. However for the methanol synthesis cases substantial improvements can be achieved if recycling a significant amount of the residual hydrogen.
Investigation of an Intensified Thermo-Chemical Experimental Set-Up for Hydrogen Production from Biomass: Gasification Process Integrated to a Portable Purification System—Part II

Biomass gasification is a versatile thermochemical process that can be used for direct energy applications and the production of advanced liquid and gaseous energy carriers. In the present work the results are presented concerning the H2 production at a high purity grade from biomass feedstocks via steam/oxygen gasification. The data demonstrating such a process chain were collected at an innovative gasification prototype plant coupled to a portable purification system (PPS). The overall integration was designed for gas conditioning and purification to hydrogen. By using almond shells as the biomass feedstock from a product gas with an average and stable composition of 40%-v H2 21%-v CO 35%-v CO2 2.5%-v CH4 the PPS unit provided a hydrogen stream with a final concentration of 99.99%-v and a gas yield of 66.4%.
The Impact of Fuel Cell Electric Freight Vehicles on Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emissions: The Case of Italy

The Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan promotes among its many actions the use of hydrogen by the deployment of refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles predicting a 5–7% penetration rate of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) for long-distance freight transport. In this work the impact of this action on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and consumption was estimated assuming the plan’s objectives are met. To achieve this aim a national simulation model of the road freight transport system was implemented consisting of a graph of the national road network and an inter-provincial origin-destination matrix; the graph was based on data available from OpenStreetMap while the interprovincial matrix was estimated from the interregional matrix with the use of two linear regression models one for emitted goods and one for attracted goods. The simulation of the system made it possible to estimate the impact of this action on CO2 emissions and fuel consumption under three different scenarios. From 2025 to 2040 a reduction in CO2 emissions ranging from around 9 to around 16.5 million tonnes was estimated and a reduction in consumption ranging from around 3 billion to around 5.6 billion litres of diesel. These results show how this action can be seen as one of the bricks contributing to the fight against global warming.
Renewable Hydrogen Production Processes for the Off-Gas Valorization in Integrated Steelworks through Hydrogen Intensified Methane and Methanol Syntheses

Within integrated steelmaking industries significant research efforts are devoted to the efficient use of resources and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Integrated steelworks consume a considerable quantity of raw materials and produce a high amount of by-products such as off-gases currently used for the internal production of heat steam or electricity. These off-gases can be further valorized as feedstock for methane and methanol syntheses but their hydrogen content is often inadequate to reach high conversions in synthesis processes. The addition of hydrogen is fundamental and a suitable hydrogen production process must be selected to obtain advantages in process economy and sustainability. This paper presents a comparative analysis of different hydrogen production processes from renewable energy namely polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis solid oxide electrolyze cell electrolysis and biomass gasification. Aspen Plus® V11-based models were developed and simulations were conducted for sensitivity analyses to acquire useful information related to the process behavior. Advantages and disadvantages for each considered process were highlighted. In addition the integration of the analyzed hydrogen production methods with methane and methanol syntheses is analyzed through further Aspen Plus®-based simulations. A Parametric Approach for Conceptual Integration and Performance Studies of Liquid Hydrogen Short–Medium Range Aircraft

The present paper deals with the investigation at conceptual level of the performance of short–medium-range aircraft with hydrogen propulsion. The attention is focused on the relationship between figures of merit related to transport capability such as passenger capacity and flight range and the parameters which drive the design of liquid hydrogen tanks and their integration with a given aircraft geometry. The reference aircraft chosen for such purpose is a box-wing short–mediumrange airplane the object of study within a previous European research project called PARSIFAL capable of cutting the fuel consumption per passenger-kilometre up to 22%. By adopting a retrofitting approach non-integral pressure vessels are sized to fit into the fuselage of the reference aircraft under the assumption that the main aerodynamic flight mechanic and structural characteristics are not affected. A parametric model is introduced to generate a wide variety of fuselage-tank cross-section layouts from a single tank with the maximum diameter compatible with a catwalk corridor to multiple tanks located in the cargo deck and an assessment workflow is implemented to perform the structural sizing of the tanks and analyse their thermodynamic behaviour during the mission. This latter is simulated with a time-marching approach that couples the fuel request from engines with the thermodynamics of the hydrogen in the tanks which is constantly subject to evaporation and depending on the internal pressure vented-out in gas form. Each model is presented in detail in the paper and results are provided through sensitivity analyses to both the technologic parameters of the tanks and the geometric parameters influencing their integration. The guidelines resulting from the analyses indicate that light materials such as the aluminium alloy AA2219 for tanks’ structures and polystyrene foam for the insulation should be selected. Preferred values are also indicted for the aspect ratios of the vessel components i.e. central tube and endcaps as well as suggestions for the integration layout to be adopted depending on the desired trade-off between passenger capacity as for the case of multiple tanks in the cargo deck and achievable flight ranges as for the single tank in the section.
Optimized Design of a H2-Powered Moped for Urban Mobility

Micro-mobility plays an increasingly important role in the current energy transition thanks to its low energy consumption and reduced contribution to urban congestion. In this scenario fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles have several advantages over state-of-the-art battery electric vehicles such as increased driving ranges and reduced recharge times. In this paper we study the conversion of a commercial electric moped (Askoll eS3 ®) into a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle by finding the optimal design of the components through an optimization methodology based on backward dynamic programming. This optimal design and operation strategy can also be implemented with a rulesbased approach. The results show that a system composed of a 1 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell a 2000 Sl metal hydride hydrogen tank and a 240 Wh buffer battery can cover the same driving range as the batteries in an electric moped (119 km). Such a hybrid system occupies considerably less volume (almost 40 L) and has a negligibly higher mass. The free volume can be used to extend the driving range up to almost three times the nominal value. Moreover by using a high-pressure composite tank it is possible to increase the mass energy density of the onboard energy storage (although compression can require up to 10% of the hydrogen’s chemical energy). The fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle can be recharged with green hydrogen that is locally produced. In detail we analyze a residential scenario and a shared mobility scenario in the small Italian city of Viterbo.
Willingness to Pay and Public Acceptance for Hydrogen Buses: A Case Study of Perugia

Sustainability transportation is characterized by a positive externality on the environment health social security land use and social inclusion. The increasing interest in global warming has caused attention to be paid to the introduction of the hydrogen bus (H2B). When introducing new environmental technologies such as H2B it is often necessary to assess the environmental benefits related to this new technology. However such benefits are typically non-priced due to their public good nature. Therefore we have to address this problem using the contingent valuation (CV) method. This method has been developed within environmental economics as a means to economically assess environmental changes which are typically not traded in the market. So far several big cities have been analyzed to evaluate the perceived benefit related to H2B introduction but to the best of our knowledge no one has performed a CV analysis of a historical city where smog also damages historical buildings. This paper presents the results obtained using a multi-wave survey. We have investigated user preferences to elicit their willingness to pay for H2B introduction in Perugia taking into account all types of negative externalities due to the traffic pollution. The results confirm that residents in Perugia are willing to pay extra to support the introduction of H2B.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Emulator for Power Electronics Testing Applications

This article aims to develop a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer emulator. This emulator is realized through an equivalent electrical scheme. It allows taking into consideration the dynamic operation of PEM electrolyzers which is generally neglected in the literature. PEM electrolyzer dynamics are reproduced by the use of supercapacitors due to the high value of the equivalent double-layer capacitance value. Steady-state and dynamics operations are investigated in this work. The design criteria are addressed. The PEM electrolyzer emulator is validated by using a 400-W commercial PEM electrolyzer. This emulator is conceived to test new DC-DC converters to supply the PEM ELs and their control as well avoiding the risk to damage a real electrolyzer for experiment purposes. The proposed approach is valid both for a single cell and for the whole stack emulation.
Technical and Commercial Challenges of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells

This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up high efficiency no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs as this determines the cell losses and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community there is a need for public sensitization as some people have reservations regarding the safety of the technology. This hurdle can be overcome if there is a well-documented risk assessment which also needs to be considered in future research activities.
A Multi-objective Optimization Approach in Defining the Decarbonization Strategy of a Refinery

Nowadays nearly one quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions are attributable to energy use in industry making this an important target for emission reductions. The scope of this study is hence that to define a cost-optimized decarbonization strategy for an energy and carbon intensive industry using an Italian refinery as a case study. The methodology involves the coupling of EnergyPLAN with a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) considering the minimization of annual cost and CO2 emissions as two potentially conflicting objectives and the energy technologies’ capacities as decision variables. For the target year 2025 EnergyPLAN+MOEA has allowed to model a range of 0-100 % decarbonization solutions characterized by optimal penetration mix of 22 technologies in the electrical thermal hydrogen feedstock and transport demand. A set of nine scenarios with different land use availabilities and implementable technologies each consisting of 100 optimal systems out of 10000 simulated ones has been evaluated. The results show on the one hand the possibility of achieving medium-high decarbonization solutions at costs close to current ones on the other how the decarbonization pathways strongly depend on the available land for solar thermal photovoltaic and wind as well as the presence of a biomass supply chain in the region.

In this report we focus on the fundamentals of energy and climate policy as reformulated in the EU Green Deal. The 2022 edition includes updates following the publication of the Fit for 55 Package and the EU Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Markets Package. The reader is guided through the landscape of EU climate and energy policy. Starting with the big picture of the foundations of energy and climate policy we then move to discussing in more detail European climate policy security of supply and energy networks. We continue with energy wholesale and retail markets and finish with a closer look at energy innovation. Each chapter is divided into several sections aiming to give the reader a broad overview of the areas of climate and energy policy that are impacted by the EU Green Deal. The references at the end of each section serve as suggestions for further reading on each topic.
Preliminary Design and Simulation of a Thermal Management System with Integrated Secondary Power Generation Capability for a Mach 8 Aircraft Concept Exploiting Liquid Hydrogen

This paper introduces the concept of a thermal management system (TMS) with integrated on-board power generation capabilities for a Mach 8 hypersonic aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen (LH2). This work developed within the EU-funded STRATOFLY Project aims to demonstrate an opportunity for facing the challenges of hypersonic flight for civil applications mainly dealing with thermal and environmental control as well as propellant distribution and on-board power generation adopting a highly integrated plant characterized by a multi-functional architecture. The TMS concept described in this paper makes benefit of the connection between the propellant storage and distribution subsystems of the aircraft to exploit hydrogen vapors and liquid flow as the means to drive a thermodynamic cycle able on one hand to ensure engine feed and thermal control of the cabin environment while providing on the other hand the necessary power for other on-board systems and utilities especially during the operation of high-speed propulsion plants which cannot host traditional generators. The system layout inspired by concepts studied within precursor EU-funded projects is detailed and modified in order to suggest an operable solution that can be installed on-board the reference aircraft with focus on those interfaces impacting its performance requirements and integration features as part of the overall systems architecture of the plane. Analysis and modeling of the system is performed and the main results in terms of performance along the reference mission profile are discussed.
Modelling and Experimental Analysis of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolysis Cell at Different Operating Temperatures

In this paper a simplified model of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis cell is presented and compared with experimental data at 60 ◦C and 80 ◦C. The model utilizes the same modelling approach used in previous work where the electrolyzer cell is divided in four subsections: cathode anode membrane and voltage. The model of the electrodes includes key electrochemical reactions and gas transport mechanism (i.e. H2 O2 and H2O) whereas the model of the membrane includes physical mechanisms such as water diffusion electro osmotic drag and hydraulic pressure. Voltage was modelled including main overpotentials (i.e. activation ohmic concentration). First and second law efficiencies were defined. Key empirical parameters depending on temperature were identified in the activation and ohmic overpotentials. The electrodes reference exchange current densities and change transfer coefficients were related to activation overpotentials whereas hydrogen ion diffusion to Ohmic overvoltages. These model parameters were empirically fitted so that polarization curve obtained by the model predicted well the voltage at different current found by the experimental results. Finally from the efficiency calculation it was shown that at low current densities the electrolyzer cell absorbs heat from the surroundings. The model is not able to describe the transients involved during the cell electrochemical reactions however these processes are assumed relatively fast. For this reason the model can be implemented in system dynamic modelling for hydrogen production and storage where components dynamic is generally slower compared to the cell electrochemical reactions dynamics.
On the Climate Impacts of Blue Hydrogen Production

Natural gas based hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage is referred to as blue hydrogen. If substantial amounts of CO2 from natural gas reforming are captured and permanently stored such hydrogen could be a low-carbon energy carrier. However recent research raises questions about the effective climate impacts of blue hydrogen from a life cycle perspective. Our analysis sheds light on the relevant issues and provides a balanced perspective on the impacts on climate change associated with blue hydrogen. We show that such impacts may indeed vary over large ranges and depend on only a few key parameters: the methane emission rate of the natural gas supply chain the CO2 removal rate at the hydrogen production plant and the global warming metric applied. State-of-the-art reforming with high CO2 capture rates combined with natural gas supply featuring low methane emissions does indeed allow for substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to both conventional natural gas reforming and direct combustion of natural gas. Under such conditions blue hydrogen is compatible with low-carbon economies and exhibits climate change impacts at the upper end of the range of those caused by hydrogen production from renewable-based electricity. However neither current blue nor green hydrogen production pathways render fully “net-zero” hydrogen without additional CO2 removal.
Performance Estimation of a Downsized SI Engine Running with Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a carbon-free fuel that can be produced in many ways starting from different sources. Its use as a fuel in internal combustion engines could be a method of significantly reducing their environmental impact. In spark-ignition (SI) engines lean hydrogen–air mixtures can be burnt. When a gaseous fuel like hydrogen is port-injected in an SI engine working with lean mixtures supercharging becomes very useful in order not to excessively penalize the engine performance. In this work the performance of a turbocharged PFI spark-ignition engine fueled by hydrogen has been investigated by means of 1-D numerical simulations. The analysis focused on the engine behavior both at full and partial load considering low and medium engine speeds (1500 and 3000 rpm). Equivalence ratios higher than 0.35 have been considered in order to ensure acceptable cycle-to-cycle variations. The constraints that ensure the safety of engine components have also been respected. The results of the analysis provide a guideline able to set up the load control strategy of a SI hydrogen engine based on the variation of the air to fuel ratio boost pressure and throttle opening. Furthermore performance and efficiency of the hydrogen engine have been compared to those of the base gasoline engine. At 1500 and 3000 rpm except for very low loads the hydrogen engine load can be regulated by properly combining the equivalence ratio and the boost pressure. At 3000 rpm the gasoline engine maximum power is not reached but for each engine load lean burning allows the hydrogen engine achieving much higher efficiencies than those of the gasoline engine. At full load the maximum power output decreases from 120 kW to about 97 kW but the engine efficiency of the hydrogen engine is higher than that of the gasoline one for each full load operating point.
Photovoltaic and Hydrogen Plant Integrated with a Gas Heat Pump for Greenhouse Heating: A Mathematical Study

Nowadays the traditional energy sources used for greenhouse heating are fossil fuels such as LPG diesel and natural gas. The global energy demand will continue to grow and alternative technologies need to be developed in order to improve the sustainability of crop production in protected environments. Innovative solutions are represented by renewable energy plants such as photovoltaic wind and geothermal integrated systems however these technologies need to be connected to the power grid in order to store the energy produced. On agricultural land power grids are not widespread and stand-alone renewable energy systems should be investigated especially for greenhouse applications. The aim of this research is to analyze by means of a mathematical model the energy efficiency of a photovoltaic (8.2 kW) hydrogen (2.5 kW) and ground source gas heat pump (2.2 kW) integrated in a stand-alone system used for heating an experimental greenhouse tunnel (48 m2 ) during the winter season. A yearlong energy performance analysis was conducted for three different types of greenhouse cover materials a single layer polyethylene film an air inflated-double layer polyethylene film and a double acrylic or polycarbonate. The results of one year showed that the integrated system had a total energy efficiency of 14.6%. Starting from the electric energy supplied by the photovoltaic array the total efficiency of the hydrogen and ground source gas heat pump system was 112% if the coefficient of the performance of the heat pump is equal to 5. The heating system increased the greenhouse air temperatures by 3–9 ◦C with respect to the external air temperatures depending on the greenhouse cover material used.
Renewable Hydrogen Supply Chains: A Planning Matrix and an Agenda for Future Research

Worldwide energy systems are experiencing a transition to more sustainable systems. According to the Hydrogen Roadmap Europe (FCH EU 2019) hydrogen will play an important role in future energy systems due to its ability to support sustainability goals and will account for approximately 13% of the total energy mix in the coming future. Correct hydrogen supply chain (HSC) planning is therefore vital to enable a sustainable transition. However due to the operational characteristics of the HSC its planning is complicated. Renewable hydrogen supply can be diverse: Hydrogen can be produced de-centrally with renewables such as wind and solar energy or centrally by using electricity generated from a hydro power plant with a large volume. Similarly demand for hydrogen can also be diverse with many new applications such as fuels for fuel cell electrical vehicles and electricity generation feedstocks in industrial processes and heating for buildings. The HSC consists of various stages (production storage distribution and applications) in different forms with strong interdependencies which further increase HSC complexity. Finally planning of an HSC depends on the status of hydrogen adoption and market development and on how mature technologies are and both factors are characterised by high uncertainties. Directly adapting the traditional approaches of supply chain planning for HSCs is insufficient. Therefore in this study we develop a planning matrix with related planning tasks leveraging a systematic literature review to cope with the characteristics of HSCs. We focus only on renewable hydrogen due to its relevance to the future low-carbon economy. Furthermore we outline an agenda for future research from the supply chain management perspective in order to support HSC development considering the different phases of HSCs adoption and market development.
Advances in Methanol Production and Utilization, with Particular Emphasis toward Hydrogen Generation via Membrane Reactor Technology

Methanol is currently considered one of the most useful chemical products and is a promising building block for obtaining more complex chemical compounds such as acetic acid methyl tertiary butyl ether dimethyl ether methylamine etc. Methanol is the simplest alcohol appearing as a colorless liquid and with a distinctive smell and can be produced by converting CO2 and H2 with the further benefit of significantly reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Indeed methanol synthesis currently represents the second largest source of hydrogen consumption after ammonia production. Furthermore a wide range of literature is focused on methanol utilization as a convenient energy carrier for hydrogen production via steam and autothermal reforming partial oxidation methanol decomposition or methanol–water electrolysis reactions. Last but not least methanol supply for direct methanol fuel cells is a well-established technology for power production. The aim of this work is to propose an overview on the commonly used feedstocks (natural gas CO2 or char/biomass) and methanol production processes (from BASF—Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik to ICI—Imperial Chemical Industries process) as well as on membrane reactor technology utilization for generating high grade hydrogen from the catalytic conversion of methanol reviewing the most updated state of the art in this field.
Ammonia as Green Fuel in Internal Combustion Engines: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Ammonia (NH3) is among the largest-volume chemicals produced and distributed in the world and is mainly known for its use as a fertilizer in the agricultural sector. In recent years it has sparked interest in the possibility of working as a high-quality energy carrier and as a carbon-free fuel in internal combustion engines (ICEs). This review aimed to provide an overview of the research on the use of green ammonia as an alternative fuel for ICEs with a look to the future on possible applications and practical solutions to related problems. First of all the ammonia production process is discussed. Present ammonia production is not a “green” process; the synthesis occurs starting from gaseous hydrogen currently produced from hydrocarbons. Some ways to produce green ammonia are reviewed and discussed. Then the chemical and physical properties of ammonia as a fuel are described and explained in order to identify the main pros and cons of its use in combustion systems. Then the most viable solutions for fueling internal combustion engines with ammonia are discussed. When using pure ammonia high boost pressure and compression ratio are required to compensate for the low ammonia flame speed. In spark-ignition engines adding hydrogen to ammonia helps in speeding up the flame front propagation and stabilizing the combustion. In compression-ignition engines ammonia can be successfully used in dual-fuel mode with diesel. On the contrary an increase in NOx and the unburned NH3 at the exhaust require the installation of apposite aftertreatment systems. Therefore the use of ammonia seems to be more practicable for marine or stationary engine application where space constraints are not a problem. In conclusion this review points out that ammonia has excellent potential to play a significant role as a sustainable fuel for the future in both retrofitted and new engines. However significant further research and development activities are required before being able to consider large-scale industrial production of green ammonia. Moreover uncertainties remain about ammonia safe and effective use and some technical issues need to be addressed to overcome poor combustion properties for utilization as a direct substitute for standard fuels.
Multi-model Assessment of Heat Decarbonisation Options in the UK Using Electricity and Hydrogen

Delivering low-carbon heat will require the substitution of natural gas with low-carbon alternatives such as electricity and hydrogen. The objective of this paper is to develop a method to soft-link two advanced investment-optimising energy system models RTN (Resource-Technology Network) and WeSIM (Whole-electricity System Investment Model) in order to assess cost-efficient heat decarbonisation pathways for the UK while utilising the respective strengths of the two models. The linking procedure included passing on hourly electricity prices from WeSIM as input to RTN and returning capacities and locations of hydrogen generation and shares of electricity and hydrogen in heat supply from RTN to WeSIM. The outputs demonstrate that soft-linking can improve the quality of the solution while providing useful insights into the cost-efficient pathways for zero-carbon heating. Quantitative results point to the cost-effectiveness of using a mix of electricity and hydrogen technologies for delivering zero-carbon heat also demonstrating a high level of interaction between electricity and hydrogen infrastructure in a zero-carbon system. Hydrogen from gas reforming with carbon capture and storage can play a significant role in the medium term while remaining a cost-efficient option for supplying peak heat demand in the longer term with the bulk of heat demand being supplied by electric heat pumps.
Renewable Electricity for Decarbonisation of Road Transport: Batteries or E-Fuels?

Road transport is one of the most energy-consuming and greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting sectors. Progressive decarbonisation of electricity generation could support the ambitious target of road vehicle climate neutrality in two different ways: direct electrification with onboard electro-chemical storage or a change of energy vector with e-fuels. The most promising state-of-the-art electrochemical storages for road transport have been analysed considering current and future technologies (the most promising ones) whose use is assumed to occur within the next 10–15 years. Different e-fuels (e-hydrogen e-methanol e-diesel e-ammonia E-DME and e-methane) and their production pathways have been reviewed and compared in terms of energy density synthesis efficiency and technology readiness level. A final energetic comparison between electrochemical storages and e-fuels has been carried out considering different powertrain architectures highlighting the huge difference in efficiency for these competing solutions. E-fuels require 3–5 times more input energy and cause 3–5 times higher equivalent vehicle CO2 emissions if the electricity is not entirely decarbonised.
Assessment of Hydrogen Based Long Term Electrical Storage in Residential Energy Systems

Among the numerous envisioned applications for hydrogen in the decarbonization of the energy system seasonal energy storage is usually regarded as one of the most likely options. Although long-term energy storage is usually considered at grid-scale level given the increasing diffusion of distributed energy systems and the expected cost reduction in hydrogen related components some companies are starting to offer residential systems with PV modules and batteries that rely on hydrogen for seasonal storage of electrical energy. Such hydrogen storage systems are generally composed by water electrolysers hydrogen storage vessels and fuel cells.<br/>The aim of this work is to investigate such systems and their possible applications for different geographical conditions in Italy. On-grid and off-grid systems are considered and compared to systems without hydrogen in terms of self-consumption ratio size of components and economic investment. Each different option has been assessed from a techno-economic point of view via MESS (Multi Energy Systems Simulator) an analytical programming tool for the analysis of local energy systems.<br/>Results have identified the optimal sizing of the system's components and have shown how such systems are not in general economically competitive for a single dwelling although they can in some cases ensure energy independence.
Comparing e-Fuels and Electrification for Decarbonization of Heavy-Duty Transports

The freight sector is expected to keep or even increase its fundamental role for the major modern economies and therefore actions to limit the growing pressure on the environment are urgent. The use of electricity is a major option for the decarbonization of transports; in the heavy-duty segment it can be implemented in different ways: besides full electric-battery powertrains electricity can be used to supply catenary roads or can be chemically stored in liquid or gaseous fuels (e-fuels). While the current EU legislation adopts a tailpipe Tank-To-Wheels approach which results in zero emissions for all direct uses of electricity a Well-To-Wheels (WTW) method would allow accounting for the potential benefits of using sustainable fuels such as e-fuels. In this article we have performed a WTW-based comparison and modelling of the options for using electricity to supply heavy-duty vehicles: e-fuels eLNG eDiesel and liquid Hydrogen. Results showed that the direct use of electricity can provide high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) savings and also in the case of the e-fuels when low-carbonintensity electricity is used for their production. While most studies exclusively focus on absolute GHG savings potential considerations of the need for new infrastructures and the technological maturity of some options are fundamental to compare the different technologies. In this paper an assessment of such technological and non-technological barriers has been conducted in order to compare alternative pathways for the heavy-duty sector. Among the available options the flexibility of using drop-in energy-dense liquid fuels represents a clear and substantial immediate advantage for decarbonization. Additionally the novel approach adopted in this paper allows us to quantify the potential benefits of using e-fuels as chemical storage able to accumulate electricity from the production peaks of variable renewable energies which would otherwise be wasted due to grid limitations.
Towards a Climate-neutral Energy System in the Netherlands

This paper presents two different scenarios for the energy system of the Netherlands that achieve the Dutch government’s national target of near net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. Using the system optimisation model OPERA the authors have analysed the technology sector and cost implications of the assumptions underlying these scenarios. While the roles of a number of key energy technology and emission mitigation options are strongly dependent on the scenario and cost assumptions the analysis yields several common elements that appear in both scenarios and that consistently appear under differing cost assumptions. For example one of the main options for the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy system is electrification of energy use in end-use sectors and for the production of renewable hydrogen with electrolysers. As a result the level of electricity generation in 2050 will be three to four times higher than present generation levels. Ultimately renewable energy – particularly from wind turbines and solar panels – is projected to account for the vast majority of electricity generation around 99% in 2050. Imbalances between supply and demand resulting from this variable renewable electricity production can be managed via flexibility options including demand response and energy storage. Hydrogen also becomes an important energy carrier notably for transportation and in industry. If import prices are lower than costs of domestic production from natural gas with CCS or through electrolysis from renewable electricity (2.4–2.7 €/kgH2) the use of hydrogen increases especially in the built environment.
Control of Electrons’ Spin Eliminates Hydrogen Peroxide Formation During Water Splitting

The production of hydrogen through water splitting in a photoelectrochemical cell suffers from an overpotential that limits the efficiencies. In addition hydrogen-peroxide formation is identified as a competing process affecting the oxidative stability of photoelectrodes. We impose spin-selectivity by coating the anode with chiral organic semiconductors from helically aggregated dyes as sensitizers; Zn-porphyrins and triarylamines. Hydrogen peroxide formation is dramatically suppressed while the overall current through the cell correlating with the water splitting process is enhanced. Evidence for a strong spin-selection in the chiral semiconductors is presented by magnetic conducting (mc-)AFM measurements in which chiral and achiral Zn-porphyrins are compared. These findings contribute to our understanding of the underlying mechanism of spin selectivity in multiple electron-transfer reactions and pave the way toward better chiral dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells.
Analysis of the Existing Barriers for the Market Development of Power to Hydrogen (P2H) in Italy

New technological solutions are required to control the impact of the increasing presence of renewable energy sources connected to the electric grid that are characterized by unpredictable production (i.e. wind and solar energy). Energy storage is becoming essential to stabilize the grid when a mismatch between production and demand occurs. Among the available solutions Power to Hydrogen (P2H) is one of the most attractive options. However despite the potential many barriers currently hinder P2H market development. The literature reports general barriers and strategies to overcome them but a specific analysis is fundamental to identifying how these barriers concretely arise in national and regional frameworks since tailored solutions are needed to foster the development of P2H local market. The paper aims to identify and to analyze the existing barriers for P2H market uptake in Italy. The paper shows how several technical regulatory and economic issues are still unsolved resulting in a source of uncertainty for P2H investment. The paper also suggests possible approaches and solutions to address the Italian barriers and to support politics and decision-makers in the definition and implementation of the national hydrogen strategy.
Graphene Oxide/metal Nanocrystal Multilaminates as the Atomic Limit for Safe and Selective Hydrogen Storage

Interest in hydrogen fuel is growing for automotive applications; however safe dense solid-state hydrogen storage remains a formidable scientific challenge. Metal hydrides offer ample storage capacity and do not require cryogens or exceedingly high pressures for operation. However hydrides have largely been abandoned because of oxidative instability and sluggish kinetics. We report a new environmentally stable hydrogen storage material constructed of Mg nanocrystals encapsulated by atomically thin and gas-selective reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. This material protected from oxygen and moisture by the rGO layers exhibits exceptionally dense hydrogen storage (6.5 wt% and 0.105 kg H2 per litre in the total composite). As rGO is atomically thin this approach minimizes inactive mass in the composite while also providing a kinetic enhancement to hydrogen sorption performance. These multilaminates of rGO-Mg are able to deliver exceptionally dense hydrogen storage and provide a material platform for harnessing the attributes of sensitive nanomaterials in demanding environments.
Greenhouse Gas Implications of Extending the Service Life of PEM Fuel Cells for Automotive Applications: A Life Cycle Assessment

A larger adoption of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is typically included in the strategies to decarbonize the transportation sector. This inclusion is supported by life-cycle assessments (LCAs) which show the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission benefit of replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with their fuel cell counterpart. However the literature review performed in this study shows that the effects of durability and performance losses of fuel cells on the life-cycle environmental impact of the vehicle have rarely been assessed. Most of the LCAs assume a constant fuel consumption (ranging from 0.58 to 1.15 kgH2/100 km) for the vehicles throughout their service life which ranges in the assessments from 120000 to 225000 km. In this study the effect of performance losses on the life-cycle GHG emissions of the vehicles was assessed based on laboratory experiments. Losses have the effect of increasing the life-cycle GHG emissions of the vehicle up to 13%. Moreover this study attempted for the first time to investigate via laboratory analyses the GHG implications of replacing the hydrophobic polymer for the gas diffusion medium (GDM) of fuel cells to increase their durability. LCA showed that when the service life of the vehicle was fixed at 150000 km the GHG emission savings of using an FC with lower performance losses (i.e. FC coated with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) instead of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) are negligible compared to the overall life-cycle impact of the vehicle. Both the GDM coating and the amount of hydrogen saved account for less than 2% of the GHG emissions arising during vehicle operation. On the other hand when the service life of the vehicle depends on the operability of the fuel cell the global warming potential per driven km of the FEP-based FCEV reduces by 7 to 32%. The range of results depends on several variables such as the GHG emissions from hydrogen production and the initial fuel consumption of the vehicle. Higher GHG savings are expected from an FC vehicle with high consumption of hydrogen produced with fossil fuels. Based on the results we recommend the inclusion of fuel-cell durability in future LCAs of FCEVs. We also advocate for more research on the real-life performance of fuel cells employing alternative materials.
Experimental Investigation on CO2 Methanation Process for Solar Energy Storage Compared to CO2-Based Methanol Synthesis

The utilization of the captured CO2 as a carbon source for the production of energy storage media offers a technological solution for overcoming crucial issues in current energy systems. Solar energy production generally does not match with energy demand because of its intermittent and non-programmable nature entailing the adoption of storage technologies. Hydrogen constitutes a chemical storage for renewable electricity if it is produced by water electrolysis and is also the key reactant for CO2 methanation (Sabatier reaction). The utilization of CO2 as a feedstock for producing methane contributes to alleviate global climate changes and sequestration related problems. The produced methane is a carbon neutral gas that fits into existing infrastructure and allows issues related to the aforementioned intermittency and non-programmability of solar energy to be overcome. In this paper an experimental apparatus composed of an electrolyzer and a tubular fixed bed reactor is built and used to produce methane via Sabatier reaction. The objective of the experimental campaign is the evaluation of the process performance and a comparison with other CO2 valorization paths such as methanol production. The investigated pressure range was 2–20 bar obtaining a methane volume fraction in outlet gaseous mixture of 64.75% at 8 bar and 97.24% at 20 bar with conversion efficiencies of respectively 84.64% and 99.06%. The methanol and methane processes were compared on the basis of an energy parameter defined as the spent energy/stored energy. It is higher for the methanol process (0.45) with respect to the methane production process (0.41–0.43) which has a higher energy storage capability.
Moving Gas Turbine Package from Conventional Gas to Hydrogen Blend

The current greatest challenge that all gas turbine manufactures and users have in front of them for the years to come is the energy transition while reducing CO2 footprint and to contrast climate change. To this aim the introduction of hydrogen as fuel gas (or its blend) is playing a very important role. The benefit from an environmental point of view is undisputed but the presence of hydrogen introduces a series of safety related aspects to be considered for the design of all systems of a gas turbine package. Most of the design standards developed and adopted in the past are based on conventional natural gas however physical properties of hydrogen require to analyze additional aspects or revise the current ones. In this context the design for safety is paramount as it is strongly impacted by the low energy ignition of hydrogen blend fuels. Baker Hughes has built its experience on several sites different Customers and applications currently installed. These gas turbines run with a variety of hydrogen blends with concentration as high as 100% hydrogen. Baker Hughes has achieved several milestones moving from design to experimental set up leveraging the internal infrastructures consolidating design assumptions. In this work the critical aspects such as material selection instrumentation electrical devices and components are discussed in the framework of package safety with the aim to evolve conventional design minimizing the impacts on package configurations.
Use of Hydrogen as Fuel: A Trend of the 21st Century

The unbridled use of fossil fuels is a serious problem that has become increasingly evident over the years. As such fuels contribute considerably to environmental pollution there is a need to find new sustainable sources of energy with low emissions of greenhouse gases. Climate change poses a substantial challenge for the scientific community. Thus the use of renewable energy through technologies that offer maximum efficiency with minimal pollution and carbon emissions has become a major goal. Technology related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel is one of the most promising solutions for future systems of clean energy. The aim of the present review was to provide an overview of elements related to the potential use of hydrogen as an alternative energy source considering its specific chemical and physical characteristics as well as prospects for an increase in the participation of hydrogen fuel in the world energy matrix.
Hydrogen Embrittlement in Pipelines Transporting Sour Hydrocarbons

Lamination-like defects in pipeline steels can be of both metallurgical and operational origin. In pipelines transporting hydrocarbon usually such defects are not a big challenge since they do not propagate under operating conditions. Nonetheless in presence of a corrosion phenomenon and sour gas (H2S) it is possible to observe blisters and cracks which may propagate in the steel. The observed damage mechanisms is Hydrogen Embrittlement and in spite of a huge amount of study and publications available it is quite difficult for a pipeline owner to get practical data (crack propagation rate for instance) allowing a reliable estimate of the fitness for service of a pipeline. Taking advantage of a pipeline spool containing internal defects that was in service for more than 10 years and recently removed a comprehensive study is underway to obtain a complete assessment of the pipeline future integrity. The program is comprehensive of study and comparison of ILI reports of the pipeline to determine the optimum interval between inspections assessment of inspection results via an accurate nondestructive (UT) and destructive examination of the removed section to verify ILI results lab tests program on specimens from the removed spool at operating conditions (75-80 bar and 30°-36° C) in presence of a small quantity of water H2S (5%) and CO2 (7%) in order to assess defect propagation and to obtain an estimate of crack growth rate and test in field of available methods to monitor the presence of Hydrogen and/or the growth of defects in in-service pipelines. This quite ambitious program is also expected to be able of offering a small contribution toward a better understanding of HE mechanisms and the engineering application of such complex often mainly academic studies.
Study of Hydrogen Enriched Premixed Flames

In the present paper the theoretical study of the un-stretched laminar premixed flames of hydrogen-methane mixtures is carried out by using the detailed reaction mechanism GRI-Mech 3.0 implemented in the CHEMKIN software to find out the effect of hydrogen addition on the hybrid fuel burning velocity. The model results show that the laminar burning velocity of the hydrogen-methane mixtures is not the linear regression of those of the pure fuels since it results substantially less than the proportional averaging of the values for the fuel constituents. Moreover the effect of hydrogen addition in terms of enhancement of the mixture laminar burning velocity with respect to the methane is relevant only at very high values of the hydrogen content in the hybrid mixtures (> 70 % mol.). The performed sensitivity analysis shows that these results can be attributed to kinetics and in particular to the concentration of H radicals: depending on the hydrogen content in the fuels mixture the production of the H radicals can affect the limiting reaction step for methane combustion. Two regimes are identified in the hydrogen-methane combustion. The first regime is controlled by the methane reactivity the hydrogen being not able to significantly affect the laminar burning velocity (< 70 % mol.). In the second regime the hydrogen combustion has a relevant role as its high content in the hybrid fuel leads to a significant H radicals pool thus enhancing the reaction rate of the more slowly combusting methane.
Modelling and Analyzing the Impact of Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas on Domestic Gas Boilers in a Decarbonization Perspective

Decarbonization of energy economy is nowadays a topical theme and several pathways are under discussion. Gaseous fuels have a fundamental role for this transition and the production of low carbon-impact fuels is necessary to deal with this challenge. The generation of renewable hydrogen is a trusted solution since this energy vector can be promptly produced from electricity and injected into the existing natural gas infrastructure granting storage capacity and easy transportation. This scenario will lead in the near future to hydrogen enrichment of natural gas whose impact on the infrastructures is being actively studied. The effect on end-user devices such as domestic gas boilers instead is still little analyzed and tested but is fundamental to be assessed. The aim of this research is to generate knowledge on the effect of hydrogen enrichment on the widely used premixed boilers: the investigations include pollutant emissions efficiency flashback and explosion hazard control system and materials selection. A model for calculating several parameters related to combustion of hydrogen enriched natural gas is presented. Guidelines for the design of new components are provided and an insight is given on the maximum hydrogen blending bearable by the current boilers.
Numerical Evaluation of the Effect of Fuel Blending with CO2 and H2 on the Very Early Corona‐Discharge Behavior in Spark Ignited Engines

Reducing green‐house gases emission from light‐duty vehicles is compulsory in order to slow down the climate change. The application of High Frequency Ignition systems based on the Corona discharge effect has shown the potential to extend the dilution limit of engine operating conditions promoting lower temperatures and faster combustion events thus higher thermal and indicating efficiency. Furthermore predicting the behavior of Corona ignition devices against new sustainable fuel blends including renewable hydrogen and biogas is crucial in order to deal with the short‐intermediate term fleet electric transition. The numerical evaluation of Corona‐induced discharge radius and radical species under those conditions can be helpful in order to capture local effects that could be reached only with complex and expensive optical investigations. Using an ex‐ tended version of the Corona one‐dimensional code previously published by the present authors the simulation of pure methane and different methane–hydrogen blends and biogas–hydrogen blends mixed with air was performed. Each mixture was simulated both for 10% recirculated exhaust gas dilution and for its corresponding dilute upper limit which was estimated by means of chemical kinetics simulations integrated with a custom misfire detection criterion.
Goal and Scope in Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis: The Case of Hydrogen Production from Biomass

The framework for life cycle sustainability analysis (LCSA) developed within the project CALCAS (Co-ordination Action for innovation in Life-Cycle Analysis for Sustainability) is introducing a truly integrated approach for sustainability studies. However it needs to be further conceptually refined and to be made operational. In particular one of the gaps still hindering the adoption of integrated analytic tools for sustainability studies is the lack of a clear link between the goal and scope definition and the modeling phase. This paper presents an approach to structure the goal and scope phase of LCSA so as to identify the relevant mechanisms to be further detailed and analyzed in the modeling phase. The approach is illustrated with an on-going study on a new technology for the production of high purity hydrogen from biomass to be used in automotive fuel cells.
Thermodynamic Modeling of Hydrogen Refueling for Heavy-duty Fuel Cell Buses and Comparison with Aggregated Real Data

The foreseen uptake of hydrogen mobility is a fundamental step towards the decarbonization of the transport sector. Under such premises both refuelling infrastructure and vehicles should be deployed together with improved refuelling protocols. Several studies focus on refuelling the light-duty vehicles with 10 kgH2 up to 700 bar however less known effort is reported for refuelling heavy-duty vehicles with 30–40 kgH2 at 350 bar. The present study illustrates the application of a lumped model to a fuel cell bus tank-to-tank refuelling event tailored upon the real data acquired in the 3Emotion Project. The evolution of the main refuelling quantities such as pressure temperature and mass flow are predicted dynamically throughout the refuelling process as a function of the operating parameters within the safety limits imposed by SAE J2601/2 technical standard. The results show to refuel the vehicle tank from half to full capacity with an Average Pressure Ramp Rate (APRR) equal to 0.03 MPa/s are needed about 10 min. Furthermore it is found that the effect of varying the initial vehicle tank pressure is more significant than changing the ambient temperature on the refuelling performances. In conclusion the analysis of the effect of different APRR from 0.03 to 0.1 MPa/s indicate that is possible to safely reduce the duration of half-to-full refuelling by 62% increasing the APRR value from 0.03 to 0.08 MPa/s.
AC-DC Converters for Electrolyzer Applications: State of the Art and Future Challenges

The main objective of the article is to provide a thorough review of currently used AC-DC converters for alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers in power grid or wind energy conversion systems. Based on the current literature this article aims at emphasizing the advantages and drawbacks of AC-DC converters mainly based on thyristor rectifier bridges and chopper-rectifiers. The analysis is mainly focused on the current issues for these converters in terms of specific energy consumption current ripple reliability efficiency and power quality. From this analysis it is shown that thyristors-based rectifiers are particularly fit for high-power applications but require the use of active and passive filters to enhance the power quality. By comparison the association combination of the chopper-rectifier can avoid the use of bulky active and passive filters since it can improve power quality. However the use of a basic chopper (i.e. buck converter) presents several disadvantages from the reliability energy efficiency voltage ratio and current ripple point of view. For this reason new emerging DC-DC converters must be employed to meet these important issues according to the availability of new power switching devices. Finally based on the authors’ experience in power conversion for PEM electrolyzers a discussion is provided regarding the future challenges that must face power electronics for green hydrogen production based on renewable energy sources.
Risk Assessment of the Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns

Salt caverns are accepted as an ideal solution for high-pressure hydrogen storage. As well as considering the numerous benefits of the realization of underground hydrogen storage (UHS) such as high energy densities low leakage rates and big storage volumes risk analysis of UHS is a required step for assessing the suitability of this technology. In this work a preliminary quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was performed by starting from the worst-case scenario: rupture at the ground of the riser pipe from the salt cavern to the ground. The influence of hydrogen contamination by bacterial metabolism was studied considering the composition of the gas contained in the salt caverns as time variable. A bow-tie analysis was used to highlight all the possible causes (basic events) as well as the outcomes (jet fire unconfined vapor cloud explosion (UVCE) toxic chemical release) and then consequence and risk analyses were performed. The results showed that a UVCE is the most frequent outcome but its effect zone decreases with time due to the hydrogen contamination and the higher contents of methane and hydrogen sulfide.
